MAYOR’S MESSAGE Taking our First Nations heritage to international heights

www.liverpool.nsw.gov.au 1300 36 2170

As the Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport begins to take shape, I am supporting the renaming of parts of the suburb of Badgerys Creek to Cabrogal. I want our tourists to know that they are arriving on sacred Aboriginal land and walking on land first inhabited by members of the oldest living culture on the planet. The next step is to undertake community consultation and work closely with our local Aboriginal community and the Geographical Names Board of NSW to move this forward. We are proud of our heritage, and we want the world to know!

Mayor Ned Mannoun Mayor Ned Mannoun, pictured on Moore Street in Liverpool, opposes the Transport for NSW 30km/hr trial in the Liverpool CBD.

Residents say NO to 30km/hr speed zones in Liverpool CBD Our community has spoken – and overwhelmingly said “NO” to the Transport for NSW trial of a 30km/hr speed limit in our CBD. We are so grateful that thousands of you undertook the survey and shared your thoughts on making our city centre more driver friendly.

Your feedback will be used to inform a recommendation regarding the 30km/hr speed zone via the Liverpool Traffic Committee (LTC) where future action by our Council will be decided. Stay tuned. We will ensure that the NSW Government hears your view.

Uncovering Liverpool’s fascinating buried history We celebrated Liverpool’s past with the unveiling of a 50-yearold time capsule buried in the Liverpool Court House forecourt on 18 December 1972. The time capsule unearthed many unique photos and letters filled with messages and learnings from the past. One of those letters was addressed to David Bernoth from his father Bert (Bertram) Bernoth

who was the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in 1972. It revealed how the cost of living has changed: Bert bought a Holden car for $4600, a dozen eggs cost 10-13c and a one-way Sydney to Melbourne flight cost $26. The former Mayor Noel Short, now 96, who oversaw the burial of the capsule, was on hand when the contents were revealed.

Working together after the floods We were very grateful to have the wonderful Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel assist with clean-up efforts in Casula Parklands after the recent floods. From mending fences to removing debris, the ADF worked alongside Council staff to restore

our beautiful park and ensure the much-loved destination was ready for our families to enjoy. As always, we would also like to acknowledge our own Liverpool council workers, who have been out in atrocious weather, working to ensure that we are all safe.

Smoother roads ahead Our road crews are still on the ground, attending to the potholes that have developed after weather events. Council staff have addressed hundreds of potholes and continue to carry out repairs across our City. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work for you.

Report potholes on 1300 36 2170 or at bit.ly/ liverpoolpotholes so we can get our teams on it!

Council staff have been working tirelessly across Liverpool to restore roads.
