LCC SIGNS HISTORIC DEED OF AGREEMENT WITH GANDANGARA Liverpool City Council and Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council have signed a historic Deed of Agreement to become co-creators and co-managers of two recreational sites – Apex Park in Liverpool and Phillips Park in Lurnea. An official signing ceremony was held at Bigge Park, Liverpool. Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council Chief Executive Officer Melissa Williams and Chairperson Tony Scholes joined Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller and Liverpool City Council Chief Executive Officer Dr Eddie Jackson in signing the agreement. Love Summer was hugely popular among residents in and around Liverpool who turned out in big numbers to enjoy this new event over three weekends in Lakeside Park in Wattle Grove, Macleod Park in Prestons and Bigge Park in Liverpool’s CBD. Residents were treated to delightful delicacies from local food trucks and refreshing beverages from the beer garden. Stretched out on picnic

blankets, residents also listened to live tunes from talented local performers and watched a movie screening under the stars at the open-air cinema.

Liverpool City Council brought New Year’s Eve celebrations to backyards and driveways with a COVIDfriendly series of fireworks displays. Liverpool was the only Council in Sydney to deliver fireworks celebrations residents could enjoy from the safety of their homes in a COVID-friendly responsible way. The firework shows were held in Hammondville, Prestons, Casula, Sadleir, Hoxton Park and Moorebank. “We were pleased to be able to bring the community together to toast the new year after a year like no other,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

NEW YEAR, NEW BINS!

Council is entering into a new domestic waste collection contract and you will soon have a new set of bins. The changeover period from the old to the new will occur between mid-March and late June this year. After receiving the new bins, please read the detailed instructions provided. Old bins must be placed kerbside for disposal at the next collection day and will be taken for recycling. If you need an additional bin contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 1300 36 2170.

INCLUSIVITY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME AT LOCAL PARKS New communication boards that support inclusive play have been installed at parks in the Carnes Hill Community Precinct and Casula Parklands to help people with disability, language barriers and vision impairment. Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said the communication boards enhance the social experience and interaction between people of all backgrounds and abilities.

The 66th Blake Prize was awarded to Sydney artist Leyla Stevens for her three-channel video work Kidung/Lament. Stevens was chosen among 86 finalists to take home one of Australia’s most longstanding and prestigious art prizes. Hosted as a biennial event by the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre (CPAC), The Blake Prize exhibition was launched via live stream with NSW Arts Minister the Honourable Don Harwin announcing the winner. Empowering artists to engage with concepts of spirituality and religion, The Blake Prize has been an arts stalwart since 1951 and has never been more popular among Australian and international artists. A record 1200 entries were received this year – a 56 per cent increase on entries received for The 65th Blake Prize in 2018. Among these entries was Green Valley artist Tom Yousif who submitted a UV ink-oncement representation of Ugallu, a lion-headed bird from ancient Mesopotamian culture.

The selected finalists will have their work shown at CPAC from 13 February to 11 April 2021.
