History

As one of Australia’s earliest European settlements, Liverpool has always played an important role in the growth of NSW and the nation. Along the way, it gave rise to what are significant heritage sites today…

Liverpool was established as the first of NSW Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s ‘new towns’ in November 1810 – and quickly became known for its market gardens and poultry farms. Eggplants and eggs, anyone?

FORMER MEMORIAL SCHOOL OF ARTS

Collingwood Parklands and House, Hume Highway, Liverpool

Liverpool Pioneers Memorial Park, Macquarie Street, Liverpool

Recognised as a significant place of Aboriginal heritage and a place of meeting between the Aboriginal clans of the area, the Collingwood Parklands are adjacent to Collingwood House which was built in 1811 by Eber Bunker. It is one of a number of homesteads constructed along the Georges River. The Collingwood Parklands and House are the remnants of the original 800-acre land grant to Eber Bunker. The Parklands are also home to the Liverpool Regional Museum.

Celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2021, Liverpool Pioneers Memorial Park (former St Luke’s Cemetery) is one of the oldest cemeteries in NSW, featuring the graves of well-known early pioneers such as James Badgery and Charles Throsby. liverpoolpioneersmemorialpark.com.au

Remount Park, Sabre Crescent, Holsworthy Remount Park is located on the site of the former Holsworthy Remount Depot. Formed before World War I, the depot provided thousands of horses and trained Lighthorsemen to the war effort. The public park includes new interpretive signage outlining the history of the park and the Australian Lighthorse.

Former Memorial School of Arts, Macquarie Street, Liverpool Built in the 1920s as a memorial to the soldiers of World War I, the former Memorial School of Arts was the first adult education facility and public library in Liverpool. The building was restored in the early 2000s.

Former Liverpool State Hospital, College Street, Liverpool Built progressively from the 1820s, the former Liverpool State Hospital was known as the Liverpool Asylum or the Benevolent Society Asylum – starting life as an early hospital, mental institute and workhouse for the poor, primarily men of the colony. It is now a TAFE NSW building. 10

OUR STORY

Built as part of Australia’s bicentennial, the intimate Liverpool Regional Museum is a fantastic way to discover Liverpool's cultural heritage, history and stories.

Step inside and be transported to a collection of different spaces, starting from the lobby itself. Since 2014, the main exhibition gallery has been occupied by signature exhibit ‘Resonances’ – with purpose-built interactive cabinets filled with an eclectic collection of artefacts that explore pioneering and migrant themes of community, good times, hard times, home, work, children and more. A bus ticket machine; child’s bonnet; suitcase record player; newspaper headline – through the dozens of artefacts and audio recordings you will uncover the deeply personal stories that make up the intricate fabric of Liverpool’s rich and diverse timeline. Alongside and primary to these stories are important Aboriginal artefacts including a Scarred Tree and other generously loaned artefacts from organisations such as Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council that help to add an important first layer to the collective history of the region – one that spans 40,000 years before European Settlement.

Further gallery spaces here at the Regional Museum showcase new exhibitions approximately every 3-6 months, from photo exhibits, special interest collections and topical history themes. The site is also home to the Family Heritage Centre – run by the Liverpool Genealogy Society and available for the public to go out on a limb and explore the branches of family trees past and present. Located just a few minutes’ drive from Liverpool CBD, this museum provides a great insight into the stories and items that shaped the history of the region.

CASULA POWERHOUSE

e v i t a e cr verpool li Right at the heart of this conveyor belt of creativity, true to its name in energising the region, is the award-winning Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre (CPAC). Originally built in 1951 to supplement winter power shortages, Casula Powerhouse was decommissioned in the 1970s before being reborn decades later as one of Sydney’s most iconic arts destinations. Besides its obvious unique architectural appeal, CPAC’s biggest strength comes from the incredibly diverse Liverpool region – itself powering the facility across a jam-packed season of visual arts, theatre, multimedia, film, music, festivals and so much more. From the jaw-droppingly cavernous events lobby that is the Turbine Hall to a purpose-built 320-seat theatre, artists’ residence, studios and six gallery spaces across multiple levels, this truly is a centre for the arts. The sheer variety of events at CPAC is testament to Liverpool’s vibrant ‘patchwork quilt’ of ethnicities, orientations and interests. A shared space where seniors matinees and ceramics workshops rub shoulders with prized art shows and curated films from South America or Palestine. Where a youth orchestra is followed by a public choir session, an over-40s dance party or an electronica event. And where there is room in the calendar for both an Irish and Iraqi festival!

LOVE LIVERPOOL

CPAC’s enthusiasm is matched by audiences who flock to the destination (via Powerhouse Road – quite possibly the world’s longest cul-de-sac – or by catching a train to the Casula station right next door). Behind the CPAC you can find two old water tanks with legal graffiti status, giving an outlet for artists to canvas their work. Sometimes they come just for the food (it’s that good) at the licensed on-site Bellbird Café & Dining. Head chef Federico serves up a locally-sourced fusion menu that isn’t afraid to change daily depending on what he picks from the kitchen garden right outside. Whether it’s local flavours on a plate or in art form, this is a must-visit Liverpool location truly owned by the community. The turbines may be long gone, but CPAC continues to burn bright!

OF THIS WORLD

Did you know that almost HALF of Liverpool’s population is aged under 30? That’s a lot of youthful creative energy and big ideas bubbling to the surface for all ages to enjoy!

Keen to find examples of art and sculpture during your stay in Liverpool? Well, you’ll LOVE the fact that we wear our art on our sleeves – on full display and ready to discover!

On almost every corner there is a chance to size up a sculpture – ranging from the abstract realism of townfounder Governor Macquarie on Macquarie Street to the bafflingly blocky animal forms in the gardens around historic St Luke’s Anglican Church. No location is spared the creative treatment!

First stop on any art pilgrimage between November and August 2020 should be the Liverpool Sculpture Walk in Casula Parklands, neighbouring Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre – where a selection of works from the previous Sculpture by the Sea event (held each October in Bondi) make their home along this pleasant riverside setting about a 20-minute stroll (or 2-minute drive) from the CBD.

And if wall art is more your cup of tea, then order that tea to go, because you’ll have a lot of walking to do. Here in Liverpool, we don’t just paint the town red – we bring the entire rainbow to the party. And quite the party it is too, with everything from laneway tributes to the late Prince and Kobe Bryant to multistorey building murals, brought to life by some of the country’s most talented artists.

Not that you need to leave the grid streets of Liverpool’s heart to discover creative gems for yourself.

Life’s too short for bland, beige and boring. If you love art, you’ll love Liverpool!

Behind every great army is an equally great team of engineers and law enforcers – showcased behind the gates of Holsworthy Barracks in two special interest museums now open to the public. First stop is the Australian Army Museum of Military Engineering – paying homage to a century of ‘sappers’ – the Royal Australian Engineers. It’s here you’ll find an impressive display of vehicles, equipment and memorabilia organised by timeline and key engineering disciplines – all embodying the spirit of 'first in, last out' in peacetime and war. Archiving and restoration is also done on site, with the collection growing every year.

The smaller Museum of Military Police offers a curated collection that dates back even further to the Boer War of 1899 and showcases the uniforms, tools of the trade (e.g. portable typewriters for issuing fines) and the hit-and-miss MP motorcycle design over the decades! There’s even a tribute to the four-legged enforcers of the law. Both museums are open to the public Tuesdays & Thursdays and on the first weekend of the month. They say, if you want authentic flavours, travel to the source. And if you can’t do that, head to Liverpool – South West Sydney’s home to sumptuous culinary delights! It’s here in some of the most unlikely places (like the middle of a carpark or a small suburban shopping centre) that you’ll uncover foodie nirvana. You can spend an entire afternoon sampling delicious deli delights or finding pure bliss amid aromatic spices. And it’s here that you can take a global taste bud journey in just a handful of city blocks.

Liverpool locals take their food seriously – both the gathering of the freshest ingredients (as you’ll see over the page) and in the preparation and sharing of authentic dishes. GROWERS & FOODIES

t e k mar

From 7am 'til midday every Saturday morning in rain, hail or shine, Liverpool Growers & Foodies Market – the region’s only true growers market – sets up shop on the netball courts alongside Chipping Norton Community Centre. This market is intentionally strict on only allowing local producers on court to ‘play’ – and Liverpool’s food bowl is well represented with goodies including stone fruit, figs, apples, strawberries, root vegetables, tomatoes, cucumbers and other leafy greens. Joining them most weeks are other ‘home-grown’ favourites such as macadamias, olive oil, honey, soap, milk, cheese, yoghurt, juices, coffee and of course the good old cake stall. Multiple stalls fill out the space each week, trading their wares and sharing stories over trestles and under tarps. There’s toys for the kids and buyers are encouraged to bring their own bags.

According to organiser Marilyn, the Liverpool Growers & Foodies Markets are more like a weekly family reunion – with kids learning the provenance of the food they eat rather than thinking everything is grown in a supermarket aisle. As a community social gathering, it’s invaluable – and if you get to enjoy great tasting fresh produce, even better!

4. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with naan or rice.

MILI & CO CAFE 3/1 Lancaster Ave, Cecil Hills

Ingredients Wet Mix (chicken marinade) • 200ml Buttermilk

3. Make sauce by heating oil in a pan and adding onion paste, stirring until golden brown. Add remaining ginger and garlic paste, kashmiri chilli powder, dried fenugreek leaves, garam masala, salt and sugar and cook it for 1 minute. Add tomato puree, mix well and cook for 5 minutes. Then add roasted chicken, thickened cream and butter.

Dressing (for Asian Slaw) • 3 tsp Seasame oil • 3 tsp Soy sauce • 2 tsp Honey

Sriracha Mayo • 1 cup Kewpie mayonnaise • 3 tbsp Sriracha Maple Syrup

Method 1. Marinate the chicken. Prepare wet mix by adding the buttermilk, salt and paprika. Trim chicken thigh to desired pieces and add it to the buttermilk mix. We recommend marinading the chicken in the wet mix overnight or a minimum of 2 hours in the fridge prior to frying. 2. Combine red cabbage, carrot, shallots together to make Asian slaw.

5. Pancakes. In a bowl, whisk flour and sugar. Beat in the egg and then add milk a little at a time until batter is smooth and lump-free. In a hot pan or flat grill over medium heat, brush butter over cooking surface and pour 1/4 cup measures for each pancake. When large bubbles form on the surface, flip the pancake over and cook until lightly golden on the other side. 6. Combine dry ingredients for chicken flour mix and mix until well combined. Meanwhile heat up the pot of oil or deep fryer to approx. 165°C. 7. Ready to fry? Working in batches, fry chicken by coating the buttermilk chicken into the dry flour mix, several pieces at a time, then fry until golden brown and cooked through. Using a slotted spoon, transfer chicken to paper towel to drain. 8. Plate the pancakes, Asian slaw, fried chicken as desired. Serve sriracha mayo and maple syrup on the side or drizzled on top as desired.

3. To make the dressing for the slaw, combine sesame oil, soy sauce and honey. Drizzle and mix in on the slaw 15 minutes before serving. 4. To make sriracha mayo, simply combine well the sriracha sauce and Kewpie mayonnaise.

Or if tasty things are more what you're after, hit the CBD's authentic delis to load up on fresh produce, meats, breads, hummus and plenty more. Just don't forget to fuel your fun with a quality coffee or two from a local cafe along the way.

Just how multicultural IS Liverpool? Well, at last count (2016 census), there were 14k Italians, 13k Indians, 12k Lebanese, 11k Vietnamese, 10k Chinese and another 80k from more than 100 other nationalities. That’s a very big melting pot!

Or, perhaps your idea of a getaway experience means putting the ‘amp’ into ‘pampering’ by indulging in serious retail therapy or even actual massage therapy as you let the worries melt away. Whatever your passion, we’ll not only fill it – we’ll find new ways to complement it! ELIZ ZAB

For teens and adults, there's a 'ninja training circuit' - crammed with a dozen or so obstacles and featuring its own start/finish line so you challenge your mates. Little ones can soar through the sky on dual flying foxes and stay hydrated with on site bubblers. And then there's the main event –
