Danny O’Connor Head Athletic Trainer• •12th Season Hofstra, 1994
Head athletic trainer Danny O’Connor has directed the Sports Medicine Department at Long Island University since 2001. O’Connor and his staff of National Athletic Trainers’ Association Certified Athletic Trainers are charged with fulfilling the prevention, rehabilitation and recovery needs of LIU’s more than 200 student-athletes. O’Connor has served as the head athletic trainer at Long Island since 2001 and has been a member of the Blackbirds’ staff since 1997. O’Connor directs all functions of the Blackbirds’ sports medicine office and supervises the sports medicine staff in accordance with NCAA and NATA bylaws and guidelines. In addition to his duties as the head athletic trainer, O’Connor works directly with the men’s basketball, women’s tennis and women’s bowling squads. O’Connor holds NATABOC and New York State Athletic Trainer’s certifications. He is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association and New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association. O’Connor graduated from Hofstra University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training and earned a Master of Science degree in athletic training from Long Island in 1996. Following his graduation at Hofstra, O’Connor began his career as a graduate assistant at LIU from 1994-96, before moving to Adelphi University as an assistant athletic trainer. O’Connor returned to LIU as an assistant athletic trainer in December 1997. Since returning to the Brooklyn Campus, he has also served as an associate professor for the school’s CAATE approved athletic training education program.

In addition to his work at LIU, O’Connor has worked at the ABCD Basketball Camp and volunteered for Ed Randall’s Bat for the Cure Strike Out Prostate Cancer and the Boomer Esiason Foundation Outback Steakhouse Empire Challenge. O’Connor currently resides with his wife, Evelyn, in Flushing, N.Y.
