The Gospel requires that particular care be taken to welcome into the Church’s assembly those often discarded by society — the socially and economically marginalized, the elderly, the sick, those with disabilities, and those with special needs. — Built of Living Stones, 42

The community gathered to worship is a priestly people, men and women called to offer God worship. If this community is conscious of its dignity, then those it calls to service in positions of leadership will be able to recognize their dignity as well.

Chapter 1

The Life and Dignity of the Human Person

— Fulfilled in Your Hearing, 17

participation in the Church’s liturgy shapes what we think, forms our hearts, and guides the actions we take in response to life and dignity matters. Let’s look at how this happens. Any time we gather for liturgy—whether Mass, Baptisms, weddings, anointing of the sick, reconciliation, Liturgy of the Hours, or funerals—we meet and are met by symbols. We need symbols—and not only the symbols of liturgy. We need the symbols that are part of daily living, such as music and art, poetry and stories, nature and words that stir our hearts, memorials that honor people and events, anthems and colors, and so on. Symbols take us somewhere beyond what is immediately in front of us. They help us to find meaning underneath what we experience in life and put us in touch with feelings and emotions when words alone are not enough. Symbols can also change us, because they can lead us to new ways of thinking and create new attitudes and behaviors. Symbols are powerful. Our liturgical celebrations are packed with symbols—people, gestures, movements, objects, words, music, art, a worship space. Through these symbols that we see, hear, touch, smell, and taste, we experience the mystery of God. These encounters with God in the symbols of our liturgy shape our thinking, form our hearts, and direct our actions in daily life. With this in mind, let’s name some of the liturgical symbols we meet that teach us something about our first theme of Catholic social teaching—the sacredness of human life and the dignity of every person.

The Assembly When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities . . . it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected.

The Meaning of the Teaching

G

od’s tender love brings us—every human person, without exception—into being. We are “wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14a). The very fact that God brings us into existence—creates us in God’s own image (see Genesis 1:27)—and shares life with us in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit means that human life is sacred and that every person is worthy and must be honored. The holiness of life and the dignity of the human person are gifts. There is nothing to be earned here. So instinctive are these gifts that when human life is threatened or the dignity of a human being is under attack, we cannot help but feel shaken. We push back, protest, and demand protection and respect for the people who are harmed or targeted. Life is sacred and every person—regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, economic status or place in society, intelligence or health, able-bodied or differently abled, marital status or sexual orientation—is precious and should be honored. Never should anyone be treated as disposable or less than or as though they do not matter. The respect for human life and the unquestionable dignity of every person are values that run through the whole of Catholic social teaching. We will keep circling back to the sacredness and worthiness of the human person in this book, as we look at the other major themes of Catholic social teaching. It needs to be emphasized that the Catholic Church sees the values of the holiness and dignity of human life as the foundation of a just and good society. We live in a world with many competing ideas. Actions that end a human life, such as abortion, assisted suicide, the use of the death penalty, terrorism and war, or efforts to manipulate human life, such as with cloning or trying to use what we know about genetics to design a “perfect” human being, contradict the belief that life is sacred. We also know that many human beings are demeaned by human trafficking, bullying, cyber trolling, abuse, sexual exploitation, racism, religious discrimination, hateful words and actions, violent threats, addictive substances or behaviors, social pressures, cultural and economic discrimination, and other forms of mistreatment. Such behaviors and attitudes say to a person, “You are not worthy. You don’t matter.” For Catholics, this is shocking and inexcusable. We are called to stand up to that which threatens human life and speak out against anything that belittles or harms human beings. This is a big ask! What equips us to do this work? Of course, learning more about why we believe human life is sacred and every human person is worthy and important, as is learning about particular life and dignity issues, like the ones listed above. Also important is showing up for the times our parish community comes together for worship—that is, liturgy. The Church’s liturgy, which includes our sacramental rites and Liturgy of the Hours, teaches us and forms us in our faith. Our liturgical celebrations reveal a great deal about the holiness of life and dignity of the human person, which floods our minds and hearts. Usually without realizing it, our

There remains the obligation to ensure that everyone can enjoy the freedom, rest and relaxation that human dignity requires, together with the associated religious, family, cultural and interpersonal needs that are difficult to meet if there is no guarantee of at least one day of the week on which people can both rest and celebrate.

One must speak of an essential “equality,” since both of them — the woman as much as the man —are created in the image and likeness of God. Both of them are equally capable of receiving the outpouring of divine truth and love in the Holy Spirit. — Mulieris dignitatem, 16

The assembly is a “must have” for any liturgical celebration. Liturgy does not happen without the People of God. Have you ever taken a good look at the people— yourself included—who come together for Sunday Mass at your parish? Or maybe the coming together is for another liturgical event — a wedding or Baptisms, for example. Whom do you see? Chances are we see family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and classmates. People we know well and not at all. We see the young and the not-so-young. We see people of various races and cultures. We might hear a variety of languages and dialects. We are differently abled, physically, mentally, and developmentally. We are the rich, the poor, and the in-between. Some of us are in ill health and some of us are grieving. We are married, single, divorced, ordained, and in religious vows. We are highly skilled, gifted, and works in progress. We could go on, but here’s the amazing thing—God knitted each of us in our mother’s womb; each of us is sacred. And God calls us holy people into a holy assembly where, if we pay attention, we realize our own sacredness and that of every person in that assembly. But this realization goes beyond the walls of the church and one liturgy. We are being trained to recognize that we walk upon sacred ground any time we cross paths with another human being, whoever that person is, wherever they come from or are going to, whatever their religious beliefs or life choices, regardless of what they look like or sound like. They are holy people, wonderfully made, and in them, we meet the Sacred. And just imagine, we also believe that Christ is really present in our assembly. As baptized people, we share life with Jesus Christ and with one another. Individuals with all our differences formed into one body—the Body of Christ. It’s our name. This is clear to us when we receive Communion and are named “the Body of Christ,” “the Blood of Christ.” And we say “Amen”—“so be it!” Body of Christ is who we are to be in the world to continue Christ’s mission to love, heal, and teach, to invite into relationship with God and one another, to honor the dignity of every human being, to see them and assure them that they matter. In us, people experience the love of Christ. In people—all people—we see the face of Christ, just as we do when we look at the liturgical assembly, and act toward them as we would act toward Christ.

Liturgy and Discipleship: Preparing Worship That Inspires and Transforms

Hospitality When we think of hospitality and liturgy, we might think of parishioners who volunteer to greet people and hand them a worship aid or songbook when they arrive in church. This is certainly an act of hospitality, but did you know that we are all responsible for hospitality? And not just at Mass or another liturgy. Liturgy actually gives us a chance to practice hospitality. But first, let’s say more about what we mean by hospitality, and especially, Christian hospitality. In short, it means a willingness to let someone into your life. It’s about having a heart that has room for others— and all their life stuff, messy as it might be. We practice being people with roomy hearts when we gather for liturgy. How does this happen? One, we are to be a welcoming presence to all who come—friends and strangers alike. We greet one another and sing in one voice; we pray with one another and extend a sign of peace; we move together in procession to share the Eucharist; we welcome children and adults for Baptism; we welcome the already baptized into the full communion of the Catholic Church; we embrace the sick and others in need of healing; we celebrate with couples who exchange the vows of marriage; and we meet the bodies of our dead and those who are grieving when we gather for rites of Christian burial. In welcoming all, we acknowledge their worth. They are visible to us. Think for a moment about how it feels to be invisible in the presence of other people, to be treated not with hospitality but with hostility. Not a good feeling. We might wonder whether we’re worthy of people’s time and attention. The hospitality we are to practice in liturgy helps us to know that the dignity of persons is lifted up when we make room for them in our hearts. It helps us to know that when we welcome others into our hearts, we welcome Christ. Two, we practice hospitality in liturgy when our worship spaces, music, words, and art reflect the diversity of our assembly—the different generations, women and men and children, the various cultures and languages, the able-bodied and differently-abled. When we pay attention to this, we honor the assembly, and when we honor the assembly, we honor the dignity of each person who makes up the assembly. And before we know it, we honor the dignity of every person we meet and are enriched by their presence in our lives.

The Liturgy of the Word We are wrapped in the words of Scripture every time we celebrate liturgy. At Sunday Mass, we hear a reading first from the Old Testament (except for Easter Time, when the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles); we then sing a psalm, hear from a non-Gospel book of the New Testament, and stand for a Gospel reading. The preacher then unpacks what we heard in the homily to invite us to think about the ways the Word of God speaks to our own lives and the life of the communities we are part of, including family, parish, local, and global. Of course, Mass is not the only time the Scriptures are proclaimed. The Scriptures have a featured place in every one of our sacramental rites and the Liturgy of the Hours. And not only do we proclaim and listen to the biblical words, we sing them. The responsorial psalm is usually sung, and composers of many of the songs we sing draw upon the words of Scripture. The words of Scripture we hear proclaimed in our liturgical celebrations communicate to us the enduring love God has for all human beings and all of creation. The stories and histories, poems and parables, dramas and songs we hear tell us that God is continuously reaching out to humanity and inviting us into deeper relationship with God and one another. In the proclamation of the Word, we encounter Christ— really present—and through this encounter are invited to become more like Christ.

Sunday affirms both the primacy of God and the dignity of the person. — Built of Living Stones, 20
