Michael Palin – Broadcaster and President of the Royal Geographical Society “Learning to travel the hard way is not only the best way, but it’s also the most memorable. I greatly admire all of you for having a go – believe me you won’t forget the experience. Good luck.”

Ice Warrior’s Patron - Sir Ranulph Fiennes " When Jim approached me with a brief note hinting of a 'large ambitious but realistic' polar project in the offing he left me with little idea as to what it was all about. But three things grabbed my immediate attention. 'Polar', 'World Firsts' and the fact that this was a British effort. " " During my first conversation with Jim, I was impressed by his quiet confidence and solid enthusiasm. Since then I have come to learn of the determination, dexterity, skills and knowledge of Jim and the crew behind the project and am delighted to be associated with them. Ice Warrior has all the potential of a truly great British First. Slightly mad and eccentric in conception, thorough and precise in planning and likely to prove ingenious and resolved in execution. I wish Jim and his team the very best of luck in their endeavours. ”

THE ARCTIC POLE EXPEDITION Arguably one of the most important unfolding stories in the world’s media is the state of the Arctic Ocean. As an early warning indicator it is vital that we know what is happening to our Polar Regions and we continue to monitor them. Without such data how do we know anything we attempt to do to mitigate climate change is actually working? In 2012 our journey of 800 miles from the edge to the very centre of the Arctic ocean will scientifically benchmark its condition and provide, in the words of leading scientists, “crucial data” in helping to understand what is happening. This is a massive endeavour to be the first to reach the Arctic Pole; the “Unconquered Everest” of the Polar Regions and to conduct an essential transect of the Arctic Ocean. This is modern-day exploration that is genuine pioneering, both purposeful and worthwhile.

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION Aims •

Adventurous Reaching the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility for the very first time – the Arctic Pole

Scientific Gathering crucial sets of data for the scientific community and conveying the story to audiences around the globe

Educational Educating, informing and raising awareness of the Arctic Region as a climate change indicator

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION The Arctic Pole or Northern Pole of Inaccessibility was first established by Sir Hubert Wilkins in 1927 when he wanted to traverse the Arctic Ocean by aircraft for the first time and therefore needed to know where the very centre of the ocean was. Obviously in 1927 the technology for establishing this furthest point from land was limited in its accuracy. In 2005 Jim McNeill, Ice Warrior’s Founder, had been working with NASA-sponsored US scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center to validate their satellite estimates of the degree of sea ice melting when he asked them to reestablish the exact position using the latest GPS and satellite technology. In doing so it identified that a number of islands off of the Russian coastline were missed out. This changed the position from 84°03′N 174°51′W to 85°15‘N 176°09'E (note the new easterly longitude).

The Story so far….. Since 2001 Jim McNeill has set about delivering the reality of global climate change, first hand, from the Arctic. Few, if any, are better qualified to do so. He had his first attempt to reach the Pole of Inaccessibility in 2003 when he was thwarted by contracting Necrotising Fasciitis of his left ankle in Resolute Bay, before he departed. His second attempt was in 2006 when he accumulated 32 minutes of primetime news coverage on ITN as he endeavoured to traverse a rapidly disintegrating ice cap to get to the Arctic Pole or Northern Pole of Inaccessibility; the unconquered Everest of the Polar Regions; a significant place on this planet yet to be reached. This was not just the very last World First in polar feats but an expedition gathering crucial climate change data for the scientific community. The attempt ended prematurely when he fell through the ice. “I retrieved my sledge but took off my skis to get better traction across a flat piece of solid ice to the first obstacle. This was a metre-wide crack across the ice like a tiny ravine. I pulled the pulk up to where I thought I had enough free rope to step across the gap and placed my right boot on the other side, lifted my left foot to move forward and was halted halfway by the lack of slack rope. The inertia of the sledge pulled me backward and I stepped down on the blue ice in the crack. This gave way instantly and I found myself chest deep in the sea water, my feet beginning to float underneath the slab. I remember feeling invigorated at first and then suddenly I realised the potential seriousness of the situation. I snapped into action and made a first feeble and unreasoned mess of getting out.” The next three days were the worst he’d ever spent on the ocean with a fierce storm smashing the thick, old ice into a floating crust, threatening to swallow him up at any moment. It didn’t but he did call a halt to the expedition. “Conditions are just too treacherous to carry on. In my 23 years of travelling the Arctic I’ve never witnessed anything like this at the tale-end of winter… if ever there were testament to global climate change then this must be it!”

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION The Pole of Inaccessibility is named that for good reason. It is the furthest point from land and to get to it will be a journey of 80 days and 800 miles, across treacherous sea-ice, in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth. The team will face frigid temperatures (minus 50 degrees Celsius) that will freeze flesh in seconds, polar bears that will hunt them and an ocean that will swallow them up as the sea-ice melts. It will take perfect preparation, steely determination, great team work and massive amounts of reserves to succeed But it will be worth it.

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION

The Ice Warrior project was founded by Jim McNeill, an accomplished polar explorer, presenter and keynote speaker with over 25 years and thousands of miles of Arctic travelling experience. In 2001 he conceived the idea of combining his professional rescue expertise with his polar expeditioning into a long term vision known as the Ice Warrior Project. Jim has worked in the environmental science sector, trained army personnel and has 12 years of blue-chip marketing communications experience at consultancy level. In 2006 he resigned his fire and rescue operations for the Royal Household, to engage in “professional exploring”. Currently he’s engaged on high profile TV projects for the BBC. Throughout his career Jim has selected, trained and led teams in key business situations, where the reputation and share value of corporations is won and lost on strategic and tactical media relations; to critical life saving situations, where effective leadership and hands on teamwork are key to preserving the lives of car crash victims; through to longer term life-threatening situations in extreme climatic situations with multiple risks over long periods of time. He has a passion for leadership and getting the very best performance out of individuals and teams, at any level.

EARTH WARRIOR PROJECT

BACKGROUND

MISSION Our mission is to engage ordinary people in developing themselves to become modern-day explorers, discovering and documenting change and delivering these stories to widespread audiences throughout the globe; contributing to society and ultimately, making life more worthwhile. AIM Our immediate aim is to develop the successful Ice Warrior model so that we conduct similar expeditions in all the World’s extreme environments; Polar, Desert, Ocean, Mountain and Jungle. OBJECTIVES In doing so we will establish a centre for excellence in expedition training and outfitting

The EARTH Exploration Centre Our long-term aim is to establish live links from these expeditions into an experiential learning centre which keeps its finger on the pulse of the Earth, allowing us all to learn more about our planet and be better informed to look after it:

The Earth Centre RIGHT NOW, our route to achieving all this starts with a World First polar expedition.

EARTH WARRIOR PROJECT

BACKGROUND

HISTORY OF ICE WARRIOR Since 2001, Ice Warrior has emulated the “Golden Era of exploration, when polar expeditions were purposeful and worthwhile, as well as adventures which pushed the limits of human endurance. In those days they called for volunteers to take part in such enormous endeavours.

We do exactly the same, now, but train these people comprehensively in everything which makes them safe and competent polar travellers. When they are ready, they take part in an Ice Warrior expedition. So far we have trained 215 people from all walks of life and echelons of society. 26 of these volunteers have reached a North Pole. The whole process is an extraordinary journey of self-development, of achievement, of learning and of comradeship.

SCIENCE

The Arctic sea ice field is not smooth as we know it from fjords and lakes during winter. Most of the cooling of the Arctic goes to growing sea ice and is compensated by its southward drift cooling the global climate. Furthermore, part of the ice transported southward has been subject to ice thickness changes due to internal forces (ice mechanics) in the sea ice field associated with its drift due to currents and winds. Sea ice modelling in global circulation models suffers a lack of a good mechanical ice thickness redistribution model that deals properly with the role of dynamics and ice motion (kinematics). This represents one of the biggest unsolved problems of sea-ice mechanics. The principal objective is to collect data for model calibration and is important for improved interpretation of distribution of ice types and ice thickness measurements in terms of ice volume transports within and out of the Arctic.

The expedition will start near the coast where there is intense ridging and end at the point of most distance to any coast where ice thickness is dictated by the thermodynamic growth and ice rafting. Our expedition is a truly global effort, with involvement from UK, US, Icelandic and Russian citizens

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION Bjorn Erlingsson Ice Warrior’s own Scientist

The Ice Warrior Arctic Pole expedition is travelling through an area where intense and variable ice formation processes take place. The science program has two objectives:

1.

Collect ground truth data on ice and snow thickness as well as ice types along the transect, in conjunction with detailed satellite imagery analysis. The analysis and satellite imagery calibration will be conducted in cooperation with W. Meier and T. Scambos of the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) using SeaSAT (NASA) data.

2.

In-situ investigation of ice ridges and transition between rafting and ridging will be conducted along the route. The data will be used to calibrate a model for mechanical ice thickness redistribution as a result of small scale motion and internal forces in the ice.

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION Ted Scambos

Lead Scientist - National Snow and Ice Data Center, Boulder, Colorado, USA

Dr. Ted Scambos, the scientist leading our collaboration with NSIDC/NASA explains “Measuring sea ice thickness over the entire Arctic, using satellites, has long been a 'holy grail' for polar research. The annual growth and decay of this system-the sea ice and underlying ocean - represents a huge cycle of heat, fresh water, and salt in Earth's climate, yet we've never had a good way to measure its total volume. The measurements that the Ice Warrior team will take, plus simultaneous observations from space using the NASA satellite, ICESat, promise to give us the best possible chance of resolving this system to a new degree of accuracy. Furthermore, we will be able to use the team's on-the-ground ice and snow measurements to compare against past measurements by submarine and buoy-sonar. This comparison will help us evaluate how quickly Earth's northern ice cap is thinning."

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION Walt Meier

Scientist - National Snow and Ice Data Center, Boulder, Colorado, USA

There is consistent and complete satellite data on aerial extent dating back to the late 1970s. Other data extend the record back to the early 1950s with good confidence. However, while there are some records of ice thickness dating back to the 1930s, the data is extremely sparse in both space and time. New satellite sensors are now providing more complete information on thickness, but these sensors are still new technologies and better validation is required. The best validations are from ground measurements taken by ice auger. A major uncertainty in the satellite data is an accurate knowledge of the snow thickness and density. Only surface measurements can provide quality information on snow cover. The Ice Warrior expedition to the Arctic Pole will allow such measurements to be taken and will provide an important dataset for satellite validation. In addition, the Ice Warrior expedition will collect measurements far into the central Arctic Ocean, a region that has rarely been sampled from the ground. This is a region that appears to have thinned quite dramatically in recent years and is therefore an important region to gather data. Thus, the measurements collected by Ice Warrior will add valuable information to our knowledge of the Arctic sea ice cover.

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION

We hope soon to have a very important announcement about the Russian Federations part in our expedition.

INACCESSIBLE POLE EXPEDITION Jim McNeill Founder, Ice Warrior

When I started Ice Warrior in 2001 I wanted it to be accessible to everyone, to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the Polar Regions and to show that ordinary people, from all walks of life, with the right attitude and training can achieve extraordinary things. (I was living proof!) That’s exactly what we do. I call this modern-day exploration and I feel it is about as close as we can get to emulating the golden era of exploration, when we knew so little of our World and the risks were much higher. But although the discoveries we make these days are more about climate change, pollution and changes in biodiversity than mapping undiscovered areas, it doesn’t make them less important. If we are to be true guardians of our Earth and for me this is part of being civilised, then we have a great deal to learn from it, still, and the fact that Ice Warrior can contribute to this makes me feel very proud indeed.

The data they’ll gather will deliver new evidence as to what is really happening and further our understanding of the seaice and its effect on climate change. I’m delighted to support them and wish them well. Best wishes and best of luck!” Zac
