VISION & CHALLENGE | SPRING 2018

As we celebrate the reminders of new life with the coming of spring and Easter, we focus this edition of Vision and Challenge on Faith in Action. We invite you to remember and share in some of the experiences we have had together. Last fall Sisters and Associates from the four American provinces met in Chardon, Ohio, to celebrate our unity within the Notre Dame charism family. All who attended the weekend were rejuvenated and excited to share the essence of the SND mission, Faith in Action, with their families, friends, colleagues and communities. February marked the fourth annual Nun Run held on the campus of La Reina High School & Middle School. The Sisters of Notre Dame offer special thanks to several generous donors who underwrote the registration fees for 150 deserving children. Enjoy the photos and feel the spirit of the day! Also in February, St. Julie Model Primary Boarding School in Buseesa, Uganda, celebrated the 20th anniversary of its opening! We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our missionary SNDs, donors and friends. Their Faith in Action has given incredible spiritual and educational opportunities to the children of this very poor, rural area. We are delighted to share that another phase of our dream for the mission is becoming a reality. The A-level school currently being built is the final step for a comprehensive education for young women before moving on to university. We are filled with gratitude to our good God and great pride to see Notre Dame solidly planted in Ugandan soil. Thank you for your Faith in Action--your prayers, encouragement and financial resources make a difference both locally and around the world. The impact report (contained on pages 4 and 5) showcases the diverse ways that the SND presence reflects God’s goodness and provident care. Enjoy the impact report‌ and find yourselves in it! With prayerful best wishes during this season of Easter and new life,

Sr. M. Anncarla Costello, S.N.D.

National Associate Gathering: Promoting Faith in Action Last October nearly 200 SNDs, and SND Associates gathered for the National Associate Gathering in Chardon, Ohio. Associates have a significant role within the SND community participating in the mission and spirit of the congregation. Associates are Catholics who wish to further their relationship with the Sisters of Notre Dame as they share in the SND charism of deep faith and confidence in God’s goodness and provident care. Since the inception of the Associate program in 2000, California’s Associates range in age from their mid-thirties to their mid-eighties and live in California, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Texas, and Maryland. A total of 24 California Province Associates and 6 SNDs attended the National Associate Gathering. Sr. M. Kristin Battles, Superior General of the Sisters of Notre Dame, and a member of the California province gave the keynote address, highlighting the importance of a shared mission and ministry. She emphasized the many practical ways in which one may live out the essence of the SND spirit. Following Sr. Kristin’s introduction to fellow participants, the heart was set for the weekend’s theme: “Remember, Celebrate and Believe.” The theme was woven through prayer, talks, table conversations, and sharing of personal reflection. Participants remembered the historical significance of Sr. Mary Aloysia Wolbring’s life and original vision as co-foundress of the SND order. Members celebrated together rejoicing in the Associates’ universal call to live out the SND spirit and mission in their families, parishes, workplaces and other communities. Lastly, accepting the invitation to believe Associates recommitted themselves to

put their faith into action through service, compassion, and prayer. The theme and the various activities created an environment of unity and inspiration as the attendees committed themselves to mutual support on their journey of faith. Deacon Joe Hamamoto of St. Deacon Joe Hamamoto assists Cornelius Parish in Long Beach at Mass. recalled the event saying, “We had a delightful time. We were so grateful we had the opportunity to meet more sisters and the awesome groups of Associates from other States. The program was well orchestrated and gave us a deeper understanding of Notre Dame history, but it also made us yearn for more. I had the special privilege of celebrating Mass with Cleveland Bishop Emeritus Roger Gries, O.S.B.” Fellow Associate Jenny Ocegueda-Reynosa, Associate Coordinator of Diaconate Formation for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles expressed her sentiments for the event, remarking, “I was very impressed by all of the presentations and the community. I was very grateful for this opportunity, and for the wonderful insights I was able to obtain through this experience.” Special thanks to Arnie Lara of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Santa Paula who served as California’s representative on the event steering committee and to Mary Ann Furlong of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Westlake Village who coordinated the design and production of the distinctive event spirit- wear.

Sherry Reynolds reports her group’s perspectives to all attendees. A PUBLICATION OF THE SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME 3 A PUBLICATION OF THE SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME 3

Again, this year, the Nun Run highlighted the SND commitment to Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation. The Community Service Fair included 29 exhibitors and it involved a new focus on Fair Trade products and advocacy. The funds raised will support SND outreach to thousands of people through prayer, education, faith formation, spiritual development, eldercare, health/pastoral care and social ministries--to victims of human trafficking, immigrants, and the homeless. Thank you again!

Updates from the Uganda Mission February 2, 2018, marked the twentieth anniversary of the opening of St. Julie Model Primary Boarding School in Buseesa, Uganda. St. Julie’s Mission was founded in 1995 by the SNDs of the Covington and California provinces. Opening in 1998 with just 40 children, the school has grown to nearly 300 children from the nearby villages and surrounding rural areas, which are amongst the poorest in Uganda. When the sisters first arrived in Buseesa, they recognized the need for quality education for all ages. Over the past 20 years, in addition to the model primary school, the St. Julie Mission has grown to include a nursery school, formation center, farm and a top-ranked all-girls secondary boarding school. The final steps in the quest for comprehensive education will be the addition of an A-level school set to open in the spring of 2019. The secondary school in Uganda has two levels. The first four years of high school serve as the ordinary level or O-level. Following this, students who passed their O-level exams may move on to the advanced level or A-level in preparation for a university program. The A-level school will be an all-girls program, accommodating ninety students and six live-in teachers. When the A-level school opens in 2019, St. Julie’s Mission will be providing a complete academic path from preschool through university preparations. On her recent visit to California, Sr. Mary Colette Theobald, St. Julie’s Head Teacher, expressed her immense hope for the children of St. Julie’s Mission. She remarked, “These children are truly making a difference in the world, within a larger community and in Uganda. We thank our donors who have helped us with the initial building [St. Julie Model Primary School] and ongoing operating expenses such as, obtaining books and instructional materials. These donations help to underwrite the education of children who are in most need attending our schools.”

Special thanks to the many donors who made this new truck possible. Sr. M. Colette Theobald takes it for a spin.

Mrs. Vogler has devoted 48 years to the students, serving as a faculty member and administrator.

The Sisters of Notre Dame recently welcomed Sr. Mary Dean Phaler, a Sister of Notre Dame from the Toledo Province, to California. Sr. Dean is serving as Parish Ministry Director at St. Bartholomew’s Parish in Long Beach. In addition, she assists with campus ministry activities at USC and UCLA with Sr. Jennifer Marie Zimmerman and Sr. Valerie Marie Roxburgh. She brings a diverse educational and ministry background to California, with experience as a junior high teacher, a missionary in Papua New Guinea, and an internship in Ignatian spirituality. Sr. Dean “finds that people across the spectrum face some of the same challenges. Hopefully, I can remind them of God’s care and concern.”

The SND National Education Office is sponsoring “The SND 2018 National Education Summit” from June 20 to 22 at Notre Dame College in Cleveland. The California Province will be represented by these speakers: Nancy Coonis (SND Associate and Executive Director, Western Catholic Educational Association), Lee Cotugno (Board Chairperson, Notre Dame Academy Schools of Los Angeles), Tony Guevara (Head of School, La Reina High School & Middle School), Sr. M. Rebekah Kennedy (Dean of Mission, La Reina High School & Middle School), and Lilliam Paetzold (President, Notre Dame Academy Schools of Los Angeles). Rev. Tom Elewaut, an alumnus of St. Rose of Lima School in Maywood, will be the speaker at the closing session addressing “Education for Transformation: Looking Forward Through the Window.”

Looking for an inspiring and engaging presentation on the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame? SND staff members are available to speak with parish, service or other groups who wish to learn about the SND mission and activities, both in the United States and in Uganda. To arrange a presentation, contact Jen Coito, Associate Director of Mission Advancement, at jcoito@sndca.org. The Sisters of Notre Dame offer their sympathy and prayers to the family of Gabrielle Chabot, a freshman at La Reina High School & Middle School. Gabrielle passed into eternity in February after a brief illness. Special congratulations to Mrs. Meredeth Vogler who will be retiring from the staff of Notre Dame Academy in June.

Mark your calendars! The fall edition of Vision & Challenge will commemorate the 25th anniversary of its inauguration. Special thanks to several donors who have notified the Sisters of Notre Dame of their intention to include the SNDs in their estate plans. Bequests, life insurance policies and other planned giving options will underwrite the SND life and ministry, both locally and internationally. Our legal title is “The Sisters of Notre Dame of Los Angeles” and our IRS nonprofit identification number is 95-2005867. For further information, contact the SND Mission Advancement Office at 805-917-3714. Our planned giving donors can be assured of our grateful prayers.
