Fundraising RECEIVING TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS: To take the burden off Kiwanis clubs, ask business owners to donate money for International Convention.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:  

"Tax-deductible" means that if a business donates to you, it will receive that money back as a "discount" on its corporate taxes. Businesses can include privately owned doctors' or lawyers' practices. Our district and most Key Clubs are not organizations that are tax-deductible, but most schools and Kiwanis Clubs are. This means that money from a business has to be donated to directly to your school or sponsoring Kiwanis Club and then transferred to you. The school would then make the check out to “PNW Key Club.” This process takes a while! Several weeks, at least. Please do not wait until the last moment to talk to your business, sponsoring Kiwanis club or school.

HOW TO DO IT: 

   

 

Ask your school or sponsoring Kiwanis Club if they are a 501(c)3 organization. Only this kind of organization allows for tax-deductible donations! All schools should be tax-deductible and some sponsoring Kiwanis Club are, but make sure by asking your school's financial secretary or your sponsoring Kiwanis Club’s President. If so, tell your school’s financial secretary or the Kiwanis Club’s President that you would like to route donations through your school/sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Explain the tax-deductible situation if necessary. Ask for a mailing address you can have the donation sent to if you plan to ask the business to mail the check. Also ask for the name that the check should be made out to. Ask for your school's tax ID number. Businesses usually request this number after you ask for donations! Get it before you ask for donations. Ask your business(es) for donations.  If your parent works at a large company and donates to you, his or her employer might match the donation. Example: your parent pays $100, informs his or her employer, the employer pays $100 to match the first donation.  If your parent(s) own a business, they can make tax-deductible donations to you through their business. Have the business make out a business check to your school. They should put your name and Key Club name in the memo section. Unless they plan to hand the check to you, give them a mailing address for your school. Have the school make a check to “PNW Key Club” with your full name in the memo section.

Key Club International Convention 2014

Sample Letter 1925 NE Key Club Street Portland, Oregon 97211 March 4, 2013 President Walter Kiwanis 1915 CKI Ave. Seattle, Washington 98050 Dear President Walter Kiwanis: My name is Lisa Antonio and I am a member of the Key Club of Liberty High School. I have an opportunity to attend the 2014 Key Club International Convention in Anaheim, California June 30- July 6. But I need your help to get there. At the convention, I plan to attend informational workshops to learn leadership skills, hear inspirational speakers, interact with other Key Club members from around the world and share service project ideas. It’s my goal to bring back ideas and resources that my club can use to make our community better.

SAMPLE

Before I can attend the 2014 Key Club International Convention, I need to raise enough money to help pay for my registration, lodging, meals and other expenses. Key Club International encourages members to contribute one third of the costs themselves before asking their Key Club to fund another third and their sponsoring Kiwanis Club to donate the final third. I’d love for your club to donate $200.00. If your club can’t give that much, please consider a smaller donation. Anything will help!

Please mail your donation check to me at the address below, or, if you’d prefer, I can meet you at your next general club meeting to collect the money and thank you for your support. I will follow up with you on April 30, 2014. My registration deadline is May 5th. Please let me know if you’ll be able to support my trip by that time. After convention, I’d be happy to attend one of your Kiwanis club meetings to give a report on my experiences at convention. Thank you for supporting my Key Club and I! In Love and Service, Lisa Antonio Pacific Northwest District of Key Club International (425) 985-8014  lisaantonio.dgov@gmail.com

P.S. Please consider sponsoring my attendance at the 2014 Key Club International Convention in Anaheim, California. Any amount you can give will help! Thank you.
