History The first modern olympics were held in Athens, Greece on April 6, 1896. Only five sports have been contested every olympics since 1896: track and field, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, and swimming.


Archery

THe Hittites and assyrians shot bows from chariot in the 1200 BC. They had made their bows out of horn and wood. THey also developed a re-curved shape. This made the bow shorter and more powerful. This also made it easier to handle of a person on horseback. --- 6


Badminton

Badminton was introduced to the USA in 1890 and became popular in 1930. The longest match was 124 minutes long. The Chinese played a version of badminton called Ti Zian Ji, but instead of using racquets, they used their feet.

Baseball and Softball

Baseball is a sport that has been in the the Summer Olympic Games. It was originally played as a demonstration sport in seven Olympics (1912, 1936, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1984, and 1980) this is more than for any other sport in Olympic history. Softball was introduced as an Olympic sport for women only in the 1996 Summer Olympics. The decision to add the sport to the 1996 Olympic program was made in 1995. --- 8


Basketball Basketball made its debut in the 1936 Olympics. Women’s basketball was introduced in 1976.

Cycling

Cycling has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games ever since the beginning of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics, at which a road race and five track events were held. Mountain bike racing joined the Olympic program in Atlanta, GA. In 1996 it was followed by BMX racing in 2008. ---10


Gymnastics

Men’s gymnastics was it the first modern olympics games in 1896, and has been in the olympics continually since 1924. The women's olympic gymnastic competition began in 1936, but it was in a all-round competition.

Soccer/football

Football was a part of the Olympic Games for more than two decades before the FIFA organised the first World Cup. After that soccer was no longer a part of the olympics.

Swimming

Competitive swimming started at around 1830 in Britain, mostly using breaststroke. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 in Athens. In 1908, the world swimming association, FĂŠdĂŠration Internationale de Natation (FINA), was formed.

Tennis

Tennis was on the Olympic program from the Games of the first Olympiad in Athens in 1896, until the Games of the VIII Olympiad in Paris in 1924.. Tennis made its Olympic return as a demonstration sport like baseball in 1968 and 1984 and has featured on the Olympic program since the Games of the XXIV Olympiad in Seoul in 1988. --- 14


Track and field

The first recorded examples of organized track and field events at a sports festival are the Ancient Olympic Games. At the first Games in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, only one event was contested: the stadion footrace. Since then track and field have been a part of all the olympic events.

Ice Hockey tournaments have been staged at the olympic games since the 1920’s the men tournaments introduced at the 1920’s summer olympic.
