Some of the unique details that distinguish Shilia include: a. Horizontal strokes that are bolder than vertical strokes for visual balance; b. Ink traps for sharp angles; c. Baseline connections are square or curved to match traditional Kufic calligraphy; d. Novel shape for letter Ayn; e. “End of Text” mark; and f. A wide assortment of traditional phrase ligatures.

Shilia Typeface Family Shilia is an Arabic display typeface that can also be used for text setting, especially in bilingual publications where Arabic and Latin scripts ought to work in harmony. It is useful for titles, signage, documents, and graphic projects where a contemporary, streamlined, and well-proportioned look is desired. The font is based on the simple lines of Kufic calligraphy, and the uniform, open shapes of its letters give it a structured and geometric, yet friendly and familiar feel.

Featuring one of the largest Arabic typeface families on the market today, Shilia’s 21 styles make it especially suitable for demanding corporate and governmental applications.

Although designed many years earlier by Dr. Mamoun Sakkal, for its first public release by Linotype Shilia was extended and completely redrawn; its extensive OpenType features were programmed by Aida Sakkal. The font has over 1,800 glyphs, which include a large number of ligatures, swashes, stylistic alternates, and ornaments. It includes the basic Latin section of Linotype Univers and support for Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. It also includes proportional and tabular numerals for the supported languages.

In the Summer of 1976 Dr. Sakkal designed his first typeface, an attempt to create an Arabic font that could work well with Latin fonts with a uniform and geometric appearance rather than the typical cursive qualities of Arabic calligraphy. To achieve this, he used a small number of uniform basic strokes controlled by a regular geometric grid, partially inspired by Latin typography. However, because he had a strong interest in Kufic calligraphy, his forms were also based on tradition as much as possible.

In the summer of 1979 he was asked to design a contemporary logo and stationary for a Saudi company and took this opportunity to refine and complete the font design, calling it Shilia after the name of the company which is derived from the name of a mountain range. He then cut the letters in Rubylith film in 1985 so they were ready for digitization and tried to find a font company to license the font and publish it. But this had to wait until he signed a license agreement with Linotype to release Shilia in its updated format. It will have taken more than 35 years from the time of design to publication, a clear indication of the patience and perseverance required for this type of work.

Shilia Features: Marks & Kerning Marks The design of the vowel marks in Shilia is sensitive to the shape of the base letters and to their weight in the different styles. The placement of the marks is meticulously executed for legibility and consistency:

To avoid collision between the marks and the base letters, the position of the marks is adjusted to maintain legibility and harmony:

To avoid such gaps, the Reh is kerned with letters that follow it in order to keep a consistent rhythm of space. This kerning is also applied to connected and ligated forms of the Reh family:
