Hand-in-hand through their Parkrun

A

new Parkrun has got off to a flying start as over 150 people turned up to take part in the first Fleetwood Parkrun in August. This new event has been organised by Wyre Council in conjunction with Parkrun and Healthier Fleetwood who are now encouraging people of all ages and fitness levels to come along and take part. Setting off on the promenade outside Fleetwood YMCA at 9am every Saturday, Fleetwood’s Parkrun is part of a worldwide series of 5k events. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or how fast you go. What matters is taking part. If you’d like to take part you can walk, jog or run, or even take up a role as an event volunteer. Sue Ashton, Event Director at Parkrun comments ‘We encourage people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; we welcome you all. The format of Parkrun is simple: register once, print your barcode, then turn up and take part. The Fleetwood route takes you past Rossall Point Tower and then back again, giving participants the chance to take in the breath taking views this stretch of coastline has to offer.’ Councillor Lynne Bowen, Leisure, Health and Community Engagement Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council comments, ‘We are so pleased to bring Parkrun to Fleetwood. This weekly event is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing. We want people to feel part of a community and know that anyone is welcome to come along, enjoy the views of our beautiful coastline and boost their fitness. Taking place every Saturday morning, it’s a great way to start your weekend. We are really grateful to everyone who has helped to get this event off the ground including the Parkrun team, Healthier Fleetwood and all the volunteers. The volunteers are local people with a passion to make a difference in their local community and have given up their time to learn a variety of roles in addition to all the organising and planning that goes into establishing a Parkrun.” All Parkrun events are organised by a group of dedicated, local volunteers and there is still a variety of roles available for people to get involved in. You can find out more at www.parkrun.org.uk/fleetwoodpromenade/ volunteer Dr Mark Spencer of Mount View Practice played a key 18

role in setting up the Healthier Fleetwood project and says ‘The health benefits of exercise are well known. Parkrun isn’t a race against others, it’s purely for anyone who wants to give themselves a challenge and to get a bit fitter. More than that though it’s an opportunity for the community to come together, not just to take part but also to volunteer to be a steward or to cheer people on as a spectator. I’ve never taken part in a Parkrun. the next Fleetwood event will be my first one and I’m really looking forward to it.’ Those who have never run before needn’t be put off, as walking is an option. However for those wanting to give it a try, Fylde Coast YMCA are running free couch to 5k sessions on Wednesdays at 6.30pm from Cleveleys promenade (near Vue Cinema) and Thursdays at 7pm from YMCA Fleetwood. To take part you need to register with Parkrun before an event as registration is not available at the run. Simply go to www.parkrun.org.uk/register then just turn up at your event. Once registered you can take part in any parkrun as often as you want and you will never need to register again. Under 11s need to be accompanied by an adult. Fleetwood Parkrun takes place every Saturday, for more details of how to register, the run and the route visit www.parkrun.org.uk/ fleetwoodpromenade

Jekyll’s Fierce Panda Release

J

ekyll are four alt.rock kids from Blackpool, England. They consist of Joel Foster (vocals/ guitar), Lewis Armistead (bass), Liam Singleton (drums) and Mike Spence (guitar). The scowlingly sultry ‘Plan A’ is their first single on esteemed indie record label Fierce Panda, and is taken from their recently released ‘Jekyll’ EP. It’s a fruitily powerful sound, too: recorded at Sugar House Studios (Pale Waves, Viola Beach), Plan A is more becalmed than some of their other Jekyll songs with it’s gently lunging guitars and fragrant falsetto, but you can still smell the frustration, as you may or may not expect from a band known for its melancholic soundscapes, dynamic mood shifts and visceral intensity. ‘Plan A’ is about feeling stagnant and directionless in your life and not knowing how to fix it,’ muse Jekyll. ‘It’s about being faced with an impossible dilemma (having two Plan As) and being torn apart by it. The song is about indecision.’ Ironically enough there was no indecision on the part of Fierce Panda who saw Jekyll play not once but twice at The Great Escape Festival (they stood in exactly the same spot during both sets to psych them out. Frankly, they didn’t even notice), and were so smitten by a complex sound likened to grown-ups running from Radiohead to Editors they did the deal there and then by the sea. Barely a fortnight later the Jekyll release plans were being laid bare: hot on the heels of ‘Plan A’ the ‘Jekyll’ EP features

select previous releases including ‘Wounds’, which opened up various excellent doors to them from BBC Introducing Lancashire to East Street Tap in Brighton. Along the way there have been festival appearances at Sheffield’s Tramlines, Liverpool’s Threshold, South Yorkshire’s Blackfest, Manchester’s Sonder Fest, Lancaster Music Festival, The International Pop Overthrow Festival and Blackpool’s Rebellion Punk Fest, as well as support slots with Vukovi, October Drift, Racing Glaciers, Demob Happy, The Membranes, Glass Caves and The Tapestry. The ‘Jekyll’ EP is also the first release as part of the Second Fierce Panda EP Club wherein six new bands will each release an EP over the course of the next year. The Jekyll EP is out on all streaming and digital services nownow. Find out more about Jekyll and get their music at www.jekyllofficial.co.uk or www.fiercepanda.co.uk

W

yre Council is delighted to have been awarded a £2 million grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to continue its work to revive the Mount Pavilion and Gardens in Fleetwood. The seaward side was restored last year thanks to a £1m personal donation from Mrs Doreen Lofthouse. This involved work to reinstate the Victorian railings, restore the shelters, repair the pathways and create new rockeries and planting. The council’s first-round application to the Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People programme was also approved in January 2017 which supported research, planning, and pilot activities in order to prepare a second-round application submitted earlier this year. Now approved this new grant together with the generous donation from Mrs Lofthouse, will fund the restoration of the garden areas that have yet to be touched including the pavilion and lodge. The Mount is an iconic structure and a Grade II registered garden designed by the eminent architect and landscape designer Decimus Burton in the 1800s. The pavilion, originally built in 1901 will now be restored and brought back into regular use as an education centre, exhibition space and a function room for public events and receptions. The team working on the project at the council has sent layers of paint from different parts of the building to be analysed to find out what colours to use in the restoration. It was discovered that the original woodwork on the outside of the building was a dark green and the walls were a pale shade of cream, which will now be replicated as part of the scheme. The lodge building will also be restored. The upper floor will be opened as a tearoom and the lower floors, which are inaccessible at present, will be used as a base for volunteers helping on the grounds and by an artist and scientist who will run activities. The funding will enable many of the lost landscape features to be replaced and the Mary Hope garden, originally designed in the 1960s for people who were blind, to be rejuvenated for everyone to enjoy. The landscaping work will also include planting schemes for wildlife and new areas of habitats to enhance biodiversity. The views of and from the pavilion will be opened up again by removing a number of pine trees, and new trees will be planted elsewhere in the gardens. A new play area will also be created bringing a mix of play equipment and a play trail to a new location in the gardens. The grant will also fund a Development Officer to oversee a three year programme and engage with residents, schools and local groups. Councillor David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council comments ‘This funding is excellent news, it will allow us to continue with the great work we’ve already done at the Mount. The gardens have gone from strength to strength. I’ve seen this project develop since the first phase and I was really pleased to meet with representatives from the Heritage Lottery Fund earlier this year. Throughout the project, the help

of Fleetwood Museum, Fleetwood Library and Fleetwood Civic Society has been vital. We couldn’t have hosted our events and undertaken the research without them. We’re all proud to be involved in the redevelopment of this much loved space and look forward to the next part of the restoration.’ Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces at Wyre Council comments ‘On behalf of Wyre Council I’d like to thank everyone who has helped with the bid - volunteers, those who took part in the consultation surveys and families who took part in the pilot activities. As part of the council’s bid to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents this funding will help to provide a place where people can enjoy being outside and take part in events, as well as creating many more opportunities for volunteering, from helping with planting to assisting with events there will be lots to get involved in.’ Heritage Lottery Fund’s Chief Executive Ros Kerslake, said ‘Parks and open spaces may vary in size, location and design but what they all have in common is the wealth of benefits they deliver to local communities. From economic prosperity and ecological diversity, to personal well-being, parks are essential to the health of the nation. That’s why we have invested a combined £950million of National Lottery funding regenerating locations like The Mount and they remain a priority for us into the future.’ It is anticipated that the restoration work will begin on site in September 2019 and take approximately 12 months to complete, depending on the availability of specialist contractors. Following this, Wyre Council will host a range of activities and there will be a variety of ways for everyone to be involved.

Written by Peter Whelan ‘The Accrington Pals’ follows the story of the innocent and enthusiastic men who volunteered their services to their country after Kitchener’s calls for a New Army. Their experiences of life on the Western Front are contrasted with the women who are left behind in Accrington, women who come together as friends when facing financial, social and sexual deprivation, as well as being thrown into the social changes that came along with the absence of many men. The play has fun and light-hearted moments, which are starkly contrasted with the terrifying reality hundreds of men faced at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
