It is a great pleasure to introduce the March issue of Solutions by confirming the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer for our Australian and New Zealand businesses. Linfox General Counsel and Company Secretary Annette Carey, who has been acting in the role of CEO since September 2014, has been appointed CEO of Linfox Logistics for Australia and New Zealand. Over the last six months, Annette has overwhelmingly demonstrated sound judgement, clear business leadership and alignment of our Executive Leadership Team, while contributing commercial and positive senior leadership acumen to our company. Annette joined Linfox 14 years ago from Lend Lease Corporation and law firms Mallesons and Allens. In 2009, Annette was appointed President Legal and later General Counsel and Company Secretary. It is extremely pleasing to appoint an internal candidate to this important position of leadership for our company. Asia Pacific footprint Along with our CEO Asia, Gabrielle Costigan we continue to strengthen Linfox’s position as a supply chain leader across the Asia Pacific. The pace of change and the opportunities for our business are surging ahead. We’re confident that as a privately owned company our strong footprint across the Asia Pacific and depth of experience are difficult to match. In India, we are commencing warehousing and transport operations for global beer giant SAB Miller, dispatching around 1.6 million cases of beer each month. Our valued relationships with existing Indian-based customers, including Asian Paints and Unilever allowed us to clearly demonstrate our supply chain and local expertise to our new customer.

2020 strategic footprint With the refreshing of our Senior Leadership Team, Linfox is setting the foundations for our new five year strategic framework to 2020. We as a small privately owned company, with dedicated teams of passionate and talented people are far more effective and efficient than big organisations where responsibilities are fragmented. We have small agile teams throughout our company innovating and achieving great things aided by the most cutting edge digital technologies in the world. With our rich and diverse history, proud sense of tradition and ‘can do attitude’, I remain extremely optimistic about the future of our company. Safety - moving to TRIFR The quality of our safety performance reporting continues to be bolstered by our move to a new safety measure, Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR). There is also an increased focus on the reporting of near misses and hazards, providing our people with further opportunity for continuous improvement. Peak season performance It’s important to acknowledge the commitment of our people in achieving one of our busiest and safest Peak Season periods. Customer feedback tells us that it went extremely well in terms of customer satisfaction and, considering the sheer volume of goods and services delivered, far fewer incidents were reported.

Community partnerships Linfox is a passionate advocate for the growth and engagement of Indigenous Australians. This is demonstrated through the work of our Indigenous Engagement Program as well as the community initiatives we support. Linfox is supporting a nationwide Shrine of Remembrance exhibition to celebrate the service of Indigenous Australians in the armed forces. This important exhibition will tour nationally from 2015 to 2017. Linfox is proud to assist the Shrine of Remembrance to celebrate the bravery of Indigenous Australians in the armed forces and showcase the exhibition in 15 locations across Australia. Recruiting from the driver’s seat Linfox has recently launched a recruitment app for smart phones that allows anyone, in any location around Australia, to discover our latest roles and recruitment campaigns. With this, we can directly reach the likes of long haul drivers in remote locations who depend on technology to keep in touch. The app was developed in partnership with global talent management technology firm PageUp and enhances our recruitment methods to secure the best available talent.

Building valued relationships

This year, Linfox continues to work with our customers to achieve the best value through ongoing productivity improvements to our supply chain operations. I would like to begin by acknowledging what a privilege it is to be appointed CEO of Linfox Australia and New Zealand. Thank you to Peter Fox and the Board and all my colleagues who have worked so hard and collaboratively to make the transition successful. During my time as Linfox General Counsel and Company Secretary, and more recently as Acting CEO, I have been fortunate to meet and get to know many of our customers. This year, I look forward to further engaging with our partners and learning more about our customers’ needs and expectations. Linfox has formed many long-term partnerships over our almost-60 years in business. Our partnership with Mars Foods for example spans more than 20 years and the relationship continues to prosper. You can read more about our partnership with Mars Foods on page four. Similarly, our relationship with iconic biscuit maker, Arnott’s, is one we are very proud of. This year marks Arnott’s 150th Anniversary and Linfox is delighted to play a key role in bringing the celebrations to the Australian public.

Our ability to form and maintain these and many other customer relationships is a testament to our customer service and to our people. People development At Linfox, our people are key to our success. We work hard to attract the best people to our business and to ensure we continue to offer the right career path through comprehensive training, learning and development opportunities. The Linfox Graduate Program is one way we do this. This year, Linfox welcomes 27 new graduates to our business. The graduates join us from a range of disciplines and we look forward to their contributions as they embark on their careers. You can read about our successful program on page sixteen. In February, Linfox welcomed Dean Thorpe as our new President Retail. Dean has a depth of experience in managing large-scale logistics operations in the retail, telecommunications and automotive sectors. I look forward to introducing Dean to our Retail customers in the coming months.

Continuous safety improvement I’m pleased to report that Linfox completed a successful Peak Season period with fewer incidents compared to last year. We also reached our near miss reporting target at the end of January. Near miss reporting is an important element in our safety strategy. The more near misses and hazards we know about and fix, the better we become at keeping our workplace safe. While we recognise and celebrate these successes, we remain diligent and focused on achieving our safety goals. Safety is always at the forefront of everything we do. As our 2020 business strategy takes shape, we will continue to leverage our strengths and are well positioned to take advantage of the significant opportunities ahead. I look forward to sharing more about our 2020 strategy and the ways we plan to increase the value of our supply chain operations for our customers’ businesses.

Key to this growth is our commitment to provide worldclass services and deliver excellence across everything we do. I recently had the pleasure to speak at LOGISYM 2015 in Singapore. Hosted by the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Society, the event was an excellent opportunity to showcase our expertise and highlight our position in the burgeoning Asian market.

The manufacturing facility produces Kellogg’s snack foods for Malaysia and other Asia Pacific Markets and is a key part of the company’s global strategy. It’s an honour to work with these world-class companies, which are known for their supply chain excellence.

New partnerships Our team in India has commenced national supply chain operations for global beer manufacturer, SAB Miller. Recently, the Linfox India team were joined by SAB Miller board members on a tour of the company’s distribution centre in Hyderabad in southern India (details page eleven). The transition is almost complete and we look forward to a successful, long-term partnership with SAB Miller. I’m also pleased to announce that our Malaysian team was recently awarded work with Kellogg’s. The contract, currently in the implementation phase, incorporates warehouse management, transport

Safety focus Our Peak Season safety campaign recently concluded with the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations and the Tet festival in Vietnam. The campaign focuses on the increased risks during peak season and reminds us that no matter how busy we become, safety cannot be compromised. Our teams in Asia often work in challenging conditions. It’s our belief that all incidents are preventable and that our people have the right to be safe at work. We must lead by example and continue to demand continuous improvement in our safety outcomes.

This is why safety is, and will continue to be, a key focus of our strategy in 2015 and beyond. Continuous improvement will be achieved by actively managing safety standards, ongoing training and development, rewarding safe behaviours and celebrating safety milestones. Strategy development With the creation of a new International Board and new members appointed to our Executive Leadership Team, Linfox Asia moves from strength to strength as we welcome new customers and continually seek to add value to our existing ones. We are now finalising our five year strategic plan. I look forward to sharing more about our future plans for our Asian business.

Keeping stock of pantry essentials Shared values form the basis of a 20-plus year relationship with Mars Food.

Mars Food has reappointed Linfox to manage its national distribution centre for the next two years. The company’s popular range of brands, including Masterfoods, Dolmio, Kan Tong and Uncle Ben’s are pantry staples found in the homes of millions of Australians. Situated along the picturesque Central Coast in New South Wales, the distribution centre stocks Mars Food’s range of mustards, marinades, herbs and spices, pasta and stir fry sauces.

Linfox FMCG National Manager, Anthony Aloisio said a 50 plus strong team provides warehousing and back-of-factory shuttle services across three daily shifts. “The 28,000m2 ambient DC is home to around 2,000 stock keeping units, including finished goods, raw materials and packaging for domestic and international markets,” said Anthony. “The DC is conveniently located near the Pacific Highway and the Mars Foods production facility in Wyong.”

Linfox has supplied logistics services to Mars Food for more than 20 consecutive years. Mars Food Logistics and Warehouse Manager, Adam Ruskin said the Linfox team are like an extension of the Mars family. “The partnership between Mars Foods and Linfox continues to prosper. “We’re in the process of delivering some exciting continuous improvement initiatives which will help us to achieve our vision of delivering ‘better food today for a better world tomorrow’.” Anthony said the strength of the relationship is testament to the team’s commitment to service excellence. “The Linfox values are closely aligned to the Mars principles of quality, responsibility, mutuality, efficiency and freedom. “These shared values are integral to our long term partnership.”

Anthony puts the team’s safety record down to leadership, a strong safety culture, regular employee training and safe employee behaviours. “Each year we renew our safety performance targets and revise existing strategies, including leadership training and team reviews, weekly toolbox talks for sites and identifying and addressing hazards,” said Anthony. “Everyone on site contributes to the strong safety culture and the results speak for themselves.” Linfox also provides logistics to Mars Petcare in Wodonga, Victoria.

Linfox is helping Arnott’s to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

Arnott’s Australia is internationally recognised for its production of popular biscuits, including Tim Tams, Milk Arrowroot and Tiny Teddies. This year marks Arnott’s 150th anniversary and Linfox is helping the iconic biscuit maker celebrate with exciting activities planned throughout the year. “Linfox will transport the Arnott’s mobile biscuit bakery to locations across Australia,” said FMCG National Manager, Steven Paine. “The bakery visited Macquarie Street in Sydney on Australia Day, where sightseers were treated to freshly baked Tiny Teddy biscuits,” said Steven.

“It also travelled to Sydney’s Luna Park to support a Camp Quality fundraising event.” End to end logistics Linfox provides national distribution services for Arnott’s, managing five DCs across Australia and providing a total transport solution. “Linfox and Arnott’s share a strong working relationship that is focused on continuous improvement,” said Steven. “We’re proud to help Arnott’s celebrate this exciting milestone and to play a part in bringing Australia’s favourite biscuit brands to consumers’ tables.” Campbell Arnott’s Director of Planning and Logistics, Hugh Callander said Linfox is a trusted supply chain partner.

Mind matters in the workplace Linfox Chairman, Peter Fox believes that looking after employees is looking after our business.

As part of this commitment, Linfox recently partnered with beyondblue through its Heads Up initiative, a national campaign developed with The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance, to encourage Australia’s business leaders to take action on mental health. The Australian-first campaign offers big and small businesses practical advice about the importance of mental health in the workplace. Linfox Human Resources Group Manager, Jasmine Doak said the partnership builds on Linfox’s existing health and safety initiatives to create a stronger and more supportive work environment.

“A mentally healthy workplace promotes more engaged employees who are in turn more productive,” said Jasmine. “More importantly, providing support to improve people’s mental health makes a significant difference to our employees and their families.” beyondblue Chairman Jeff Kennett said if businesses aren’t investing in the mental health of their employees, it will be costing the company money. “Every dollar spent on effective workplace mental health action derives a positive return on investment of at least $2.30, according to research by PwC,” said Mr Kennett. “Mental health conditions cost Australian workplaces approximately $10.9 billion per year as a result of absenteeism, reduced productivity and compensation claims. When people’s mental health is a low priority, there is often also low staff morale, high staff turnover and increased sick leave. “beyondblue applauds the leadership of Peter Fox, as we know improving workplace mental health only works if it’s owned and led by business leaders.”

Training and support Linfox provides managers with training to enhance their understanding of the impact that common mental health problems can have on individuals, the workplace and the organisation as a whole. “Our people managers are taught strategies to address mental health issues and to approach employees who may be at risk,” said Jasmine. “We offer face-to-face training as well as online tools and resources. “Linfox has eight guiding values. Two of these values - courage and individual accountability - are particularly relevant to this initiative. “We encourage all our staff to be accountable for people’s mental health in the workplace and to show courage if they recognise someone who might need a hand.” Linfox also offers its employees counselling through the Employee Assistance Program, a free and confidential counselling service for all employees and their immediate family. With extensive global logistics expertise, Dean Thorpe joined Linfox as the new President Retail in February. Dean has more than 25 years’ experience managing largescale logistics operations in the retail, telecommunications and automotive sectors. He has recently held senior positions with CEVA Logistics (formerly TNT Logistics) and Swire Cold Storage. During his time at CEVA Logistics, Dean spent eight years abroad where he held several senior positions, including Managing Director and Senior Vice President Operations for Microsoft.

Dean said he will focus on continuously improving customer service levels and exploring new opportunities for growth. “I’m enjoying getting to know our customers and understanding their requirements and how we can better meet these,” said Dean. Having worked with several multinational companies, including Microsoft, Ford and Carrefour, Dean is particularly interested in global retail trends and the opportunities they offer customers.

“The internet continues to shape procurement, leading to new opportunities in the delivery market and influencing the end-to-end supply chain,” he said. “Australia has experienced strong growth in the home delivery sector in the last few years and judging by trends in the US, Europe and Asia this delivery method will continue to increase in future years. “It’s a very interesting time to work in retail and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead.” Dean has two daughters with his wife Rachel. His interests include golf, AFL football and travel.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for our team and business.” 12

For 18 years now, he’s managed a team of 40 Linfox people to construct the 5.3 kilometre Australian Grand Prix racing track at Albert Park. It’s a tight schedule, and the team have just twelve weeks to convert Albert Park into a world-class Formula One racing track. “The team transports, installs, and removes more than 3,000 concrete barriers, each weighing in excess of 4.5 tonnes,” said Tony.

Linfox also assists with the transportation and installation of the debris fences, general admission stands and tyre buffers, as well as transforming the track back into a public park again. “It’s an extraordinarily complex project,” said Tony. “To be involved in an event of this scale is a fantastic achievement for our team and the business,” he said. The Australian Grand Prix was held from 12-15 March 2015.

Global beer giant, SABMiller has appointed Linfox to manage outbound supply chain operations from its distribution centre in Sangareddy, India.

SABMiller is one of the world’s leading brewers with more than 200 beer brands and some 70,000 employees in over 80 countries. The group’s portfolio includes global brands such as Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch as well as Victoria Bitter in Australia. SABMiller also has growing soft drinks businesses and is one of the world’s largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products. The Linfox team will provide warehousing as well as transport of finished beer products. India Country Manager, Piers De Lukacs Lessner said the substantial operation will dispatch around 1.6 million cases of beer each month. “The Linfox team will meet the continuous demand for SABMiller

products and provide increased services during India’s busy peak season,” said Piers. “In a typical week, the team will deploy around 50 trucks a day to deliver product to government licenced liquor depots across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states in India’s south.” “In India’s busy festival season, this number will increase to more than 100 trucks a day.” Competitive edge Piers said Linfox secured the business based on its strong reputation for service excellence. “Our work with Indian-based customers, including Asian Paints and Unilever allowed us to demonstrate our supply chain expertise and our understanding of the uniquely Indian conditions,” Piers said.

“Our proven track record with SABMiller’s Australian based subsidiary, Carlton United Breweries, also bolstered our position.” Safety was another key consideration for the SABMiller team. “Our Indian team members operate in sometimes challenging safety environments,” said Piers. “The SABMiller India team are impressed with Linfox’s safety track record and our proactive approach to managing safety standards. “We’re very pleased to be working with this renowned global company and look forward to furthering our partnership into the future.”

Natural gas leads way to a cleaner energy future

Linfox energy efficiency was on show when BOC opened its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant near the Queensland township of Chinchilla in December.

The $200 million plus investment aims to provide Queensland residents with a cleaner, more cost-effective gas alternative for the manufacturing and transport sectors. Former Queensland Premier Campbell Newman arrived in a Linfox LNG powered Kenworth prime mover to officially open the plant. “BOC is focused on developing LNG as an alternative vehicle fuel,” said Linfox National Manager Gas, Simon Livingstone. “Linfox has invested in emissionefficient alternative fuel sources for transportation, introducing two LNGfuelled Kenworth prime movers to our fleet for BOC. “We’re very proud to support BOC in its efforts to develop and distribute

LNG in Australia.” BOC South Pacific Managing Director Colin Isaac said the new plant will generate long term economic and environmental advantages for Queensland. “LNG produces up to 25 per cent fewer emissions than diesel when used for transport and is a proven, safe alternative to other fossil fuels,” said Colin. “It’s also ideal for marine vessels and is Great Barrier Reef friendly because unlike diesel and marine oil it evaporates if spilled with no toxic effects.” A member of The Linde Group, BOC produces LNG for a range of domestic fuel uses in the manufacturing, mining and long haul trucking markets.

Linfox provides bulk transport of BOC LNG gas to the company’s retail customers in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Linfox also distributes BOC packaged gas products in Australia, supported by a team of 160 employees and a fleet of 140 vehicles.

Unilever mega DC opens for business

Linfox Chairman Peter Fox, our CEOs for Australia, New Zealand and Asia and International Board members visited India recently for the official opening of the Hindustan Unilever Limited mega DC in Chennai. The facility, which has been operating since late 2014, is India’s largest modern DC. The site houses Unilever’s extensive range of home and personal care brands, including Dove, Ponds, Comfort and Rexona. India National Operations Manager, Bal Mittal said Linfox will consolidate Unilever’s three existing sites into the new mega DC to provide a more cost effective and centralised solution.

“The mega DC operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employs more than 700 team members,” said Bal. “Linfox was awarded this new work based on our strong track record of delivering service excellence and meeting KPIs.” Linfox also provides distribution services for Unilever throughout Tamil Nadu state, located in the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula.

“Consumers from across the globe use Unilever products as part of their daily routine, and we’re excited to help make this happen,” said Bal. Unilever makes and sells products under more than 1,000 brand names worldwide. Two billion people use them on any given day. Linfox works with Unilever in six countries across the Asia Pacific.

A team of 450 Linfox employees operate the warehouse in Truganina, which services Coles’ extensive store network throughout Victoria. “The warehouse contains around 4,500 stock keeping units,” said Site Manager, Phill McInerney. “The team pick an average of 1.65 million cartons of ambient goods each week. During our busiest periods, this can increase to over two million per week. “We’re very pleased to be part of a team that services one of Australia’s leading retailers.”

Continuous improvement Retail General Manager, Kris Talevski said Linfox continuously strives to improve safety, service and cost in an intensely competitive retail environment. “Productivity has improved significantly over the last financial year with a comprehensive review of warehouse layout and pick processes,” said Kris. “This has led to strong improvements in work flow, waste reduction and the quality of order stacking.”

Safety focus Safety is a top priority for the site and the team work hard to keep the safety of employees, the customer and coworkers front of mind. “A recently commenced load management initiative to prevent manual handling injuries aims to improve safety outcomes onsite,” said Phill. “We’ve also improved our safety presentation style, making information sessions more interactive and encouraging greater team member participation.”

Linfox’s fleet for Woolworths in Victoria is powered by B20 diesel, a fuel mix containing up to 20 per cent biodiesel and 80 per cent mineral diesel. Biodiesel is a renewable and cleanerburning alternative fuel produced from plant or animal sources containing fatty acids.


Biodiesel advantage Linfox Group Manager, Safety and Sustainability, Andrew Niven said B20 offers several benefits. “B20 diesel is better for the environment and better for our health,” said Andrew. “The transport industry is Australia’s third largest producer of greenhouse gases, following stationary energy generation and agriculture.” “According to the CSIRO, increased use of biodiesel in the transport industry can play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to long- term solutions to climate change.” Sustainability target on track Linfox works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the GreenFox sustainability program. “Since 2007 Linfox has reduced our rate of greenhouse gas emissions by 44 per cent, and we are well positioned to achieve further reductions.” said Andrew.

“The reduction has been a progressive and sustained effort by Linfox people who have embraced our sustainability strategy. “Biodiesel is just one of the ways Linfox is working to reduce its environmental impact.” Eco-Drive training Linfox drivers working with Woolworths also receive training in Linfox’s Eco Drive program. “Eco-drive training is integrated into Linfox’s broader defensive driver training program and aims to reinforce safe and sustainable driving techniques that minimise our rate of carbon emissions,” said Andrew. “This includes avoiding excessive idling through to maintaining tyre pressures.”

Linfox Jobs go mobile A partnership with global talent management technology firm, PageUp is linking people to Linfox jobs, wherever they are. The ability to attract and retain talented people is a challenge faced by all organisations, across all industries. A new ‘Linfox Jobs’ app is helping job seekers to search and apply for jobs, simply by using their smartphone. Driving benefits General Manager Human Resources, Gaylynne Neill said Linfox employs a significant number of Australians each year. “Among the most challenging positions to fill are long haul drivers who are licenced to drive multicombination vehicles and road trains,” said Gaylynne. “This group spends many hours on the road in remote locations and relies heavily on mobile devices to communicate.” Linfox uses several online tools to attract job seekers, including the Linfox website, banner advertising and more recently, the Linfox Jobs app.

“Around 35 per cent of traffic to the jobs board is via mobile phone and around 14 per cent of all job applications are submitted on a mobile,” explained Gaylynne. “Importantly, the number of applications submitted via mobile more than doubled in the last year.” The app complements Linfox’s existing recruitment channels to better reach the target audience and open new lines of communication. “The app updates regularly and works when internet connectivity is low, making it an attractive alternative to online job boards, particularly for long haul drivers,” said Gaylynne. “This year, we’ll introduce push notifications to better engage our audience. Ultimately we aim to tell potential candidates about a job, before they start their search.” Mobile solution PageUp founder, Simon Cariss says the way people apply for jobs is changing rapidly. “In the last three years we’ve seen a huge shift towards using smart phones to apply for jobs. Not just in the white collar job market, but across all professions,” said Simon.

“Smart phone sales reached saturation point some years ago but it’s taken people a while to use their phones to search and apply for jobs.” Simon said that in Asia, where PageUp has offices in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, people are moving away from desktop computers in favour of smartphones. “People are investing in phones with large screens and using them as a one-stop-shop to apply for jobs, for word processing and online shopping.” “We’re seeing this trend across all ages, education levels, backgrounds and in all industries. Commerce graduate, Ivana Traill is one of 27 new faces to join Linfox’s Australian and New Zealand operations as part of the 2015 Graduate Program.

The ambitious 23-year-old is posted at the Unilever Distribution Centre in Wellington, New Zealand. Just two weeks into the role, Ivana is helping to coordinate a national rollout of new transport technology. “A friend joined the program in 2014 and had nothing but great things to say about it, so I decided to apply too,” said Ivana. “Logistics is very hands-on and that suits my personality. “It was daunting at first. There’s so much to learn!

“Every day I discover new aspects of the business and meet new people. I’m very pleased to be part of the team.” The graduates will work across all five business units, completing three rotations over the 18 month program. Linfox Emerging Careers Manager, Sharon Abbott said the program offers graduates invaluable experience to build a career in transport and logistics. “The recruits come from different disciplines including business,

commerce, engineering, logistics and international trade,” said Sharon. “Graduates are supported to continuously develop – not just in logistics, but also in management and leadership. “This year marks our highest ever intake from New Zealand, with four New Zealand graduates joining our program.”


Building New Zealand

Linfox provides Daiken New Zealand with a customised supply chain approach for customised products across New Zealand and export markets. The Japanese owned manufacturer produces innovative and environmentally sustainable interior construction materials. The company is best known for the popular Customwood fibreboard product, a key component in homes throughout New Zealand, in everything from kitchen joinery to staircases and children’s toys. Daiken also exports products to Japan and the United States. Market demand Linfox employs a team of drivers, store people and administrators across two sites in New Zealand’s South Island to deliver a full supply chain solution for Daiken. The team manage a transport and storage operation out of Daiken’s manufacturing plant in Rangiora, a regional city north of Christchurch.

A second facility in central Christchurch offers around 4,000 square metres of storage space to support increased demand in domestic and international markets. Linfox Operations Manager, Wayne Boardman said up to 1,000 cubic metres of Daiken product is loaded, dispatched and transported each fortnight. “Finished products are transported from the plant to the Linfox distribution centre in Christchurch,” said Wayne. “From there, products are transported by road and rail to Daiken’s retail customers throughout New Zealand. “We also transport around 90 containers each week of Daiken product to Lyttelton Port and load it onto cargo ships destined for Japan and Asia.”

Customised partnership Flexibility is a key driver of Daiken’s success. Daiken products are made-to-order and the company offers its customers the ability to select the panel size, thickness and density to suit their individual needs. “Daiken is known for its customised products and this is a big part of their appeal,” said Wayne. “We aim to replicate this philosophy in our own service to Daiken by customising our approach and going the extra mile to accommodate the company’s needs.” Safety is another key factor in the successful partnership. “Both Linfox and Daiken are passionate about safety and this is reflected in our stringent safety processes and the proactive safety culture onsite,” said Wayne. “The team recently celebrated more than 1,000 days LTI free and we look forward to continuing our success in this area.”

Investment milestone in Vietnam Linfox Vietnam held a colourful ceremony in December to celebrate the official opening of a transit yard in Quang Binh province for Phu Bia mining. Attending the ceremony were local dignitaries and representatives from Linfox and Phu Bia. Vietnam Country Manager, Scott Croll said the day began with a traditional Vietnamese good luck ceremony to signify the importance of the investment to the region. “Linfox Transport Quang Binh is the first overseas investor in the province so the event was an important milestone for the community,” said Scott.

“Linfox is committed to creating local job opportunities and providing ongoing development for local people.” Phu Bia Mining Phu Bia Mining is a Lao-registered company of PanAust. The company holds a Mineral Exploration and Production Agreement for the Phu Bia contract area, a 2,600 squarekilometre region in Laos. Linfox signed a contract to transport copper concentrate for Phu Bia Mining in late 2014.

Based at Quang Binh in Vietnam and Siri Racha in Thailand, the copper concentrate will be transported to key ports in Thailand and Vietnam for export to customer smelters throughout Asia. “The copper transport is sourced from Phu Bia’s flagship Phu Kham mine and processing site, located 140 kilometres from the Lao capital city, Vientiane,” said Scott. “Our operation is supported by significant investment in state-ofthe-art fleet and a team of more than 170 drivers, support staff and management.”


Recognising Indigenous contribution at war

The travelling exhibition, ‘Indigenous Australians at War: from the Boer War to the present’, will tour nationally from 2015 to 2017. Jean McAuslan, Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Shrine of Remembrance said the stories told through the exhibition are drawn from all over Australia. “Indigenous Australians have served Australia in all major conflicts from the Boer War to the present,” said Jean. “Aboriginal men and women have combined modern military and uniquely indigenous skills in the service of their country.” “This important exhibition uncovers the individual and family stories of service and sacrifice of the First Australians.” “The Shrine Trustees gratefully acknowledge the generous contribution of Linfox in enabling this exhibition to tour nationally.”

Proud supporter Linfox President Linehaul, Mark Mazurek said Linfox will use road, rail and sea to carefully transport the exhibition to 15 locations across Australia. “The exhibition opened in Tasmania in January and will travel throughout Australia, from Yulara in the Northern Territory to Moreton Bay in Queensland and back again,” said Mark. “Linfox is proud to help the Shrine of Remembrance celebrate the bravery of Indigenous Australians in the armed forces.”

Community support eases flood pain Community minded employees from Linfox and Giant supermarkets banded together to support co-workers impacted by the Malaysian floods.

Linfox and Giant employees held a successful fundraising event at the Giant distribution centre.

Malaysia was hit by the worst floods in over a decade in late December. Authorities estimate that a quarter of a million people were forced to evacuate their homes. The Temerloh district, home to several Linfox operations and employees, was one of the worst affected areas. “Some employees’ homes were flooded and many lost all their possessions,” said Malaysia Country Manager, Saj Iqbal. “Linfox Malaysia created a relief fund to raise money for basic living necessities, including food, clothes and other items.

“Employees also participated in a fundraising event, organised by our customer Giant supermarkets. It was heart-warming to see everyone pull together and support each other during this difficult time.” Continued service The Linfox team worked hard to minimise customer impact during the floods and ensure deliveries continued to reach the affected areas. Transport Site Manager, Vibagar Sukumaran said his team worked closely with local authorities and the Linfox central control room to implement our crisis management plan.

“Delivery routes for some of our customers were impacted by road closures and heavy traffic,” said Vibagar. “Our team closely monitored the situation to provide timely safety updates and devise alternative delivery routes to fulfil critical customer deliveries with support from the control room operations based at Linfox Head Office.”


Fast tracking young careers The transition from school to work is an exciting time for students but it can also be fraught with uncertainty about career choices and expectations. A new Linfox School Based Traineeship aims to ease this transition and promote Linfox as a career choice among school-aged students. Linfox Operational Training Manager, Peter Nemtsas said seven year 12 students from six Victorian secondary colleges were welcomed to the traineeship in February. “The traineeship combines logistics theory with hands-on work experience to build the student’s skills and prepare them for the workforce,” said Peter.

“Students are remunerated for their work and supported throughout the program by a buddy. “It’s a mutually beneficial relationship and one that Linfox looks forward to continuing into the future.” Laverton College is one of six Victorian secondary colleges to offer its students the opportunity to join the traineeship. Laverton College Careers Practitioner, Anthony Daborn works closely with students to prepare them for life after school.
