HERE WE STAND FACING THE SEA
Here we stand facing the sea Whether we feel attached or disconnected from the sea, most of us have an emotional connection with the waters which connect our world. The sea as we face it from the beaches of Rota, reveals a will of its own. As the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, the secret temper of the two waters comes to life. Amongst attraction, fear and a longing to become acquainted with the sea, I have carried out a research on the beach and in the waters of Rota through personal expression and the voices of local citizens. Questioning the citizens of Rota on their relation to the sea reveals individual experiences connecting my personal reflection with the town’s itself.
Here we stand facing the sea is a visual research of the human perception of the sea as experienced from the coast of Rota. The clash of elements awaken a complexity of atmosphere, mood and senses which are explored in photos, video and objects. The human pose, physical objects and tactility are used as motif for photographs, video and objects to personify the sea. Maja Skjøth Hegelund
Aquí, nosotros frente al mar. Nos sintamos o no atraídos por el mar, la mayoría de nosotros tenemos un vínculo emocional con las aguas que conectan nuestro mundo. El mar, tal y como lo percibimos desde las playas de Rota, revela una voluntad propia. En el litoral gaditano, en que el Atlántico se encuentra con el Mediterráneo, el temperamento secreto de las dos aguas cobra vida. Con sentimientos de atracción, miedo y anhelo por conocer el mar, he llevado a cabo una investigación sobre las aguas y las playas de Rota usando como instrumento tanto la expresión personal como las voces de ciudadanos locales. Las entrevistas a una serie de lugareños sobre su relación con el mar han revelado experiencias individuales que conectan mis propias reflexiones con la ciudad.
Aquí, nosotros frente al mar es una investigación visual acerca de la percepción humana del mar desde lo experiencial en las costas de Rota. El choque de los elementos despierta una complejidad de la atmósfera, de los estados de ánimo y de los sentidos que son explorados a partir de fotografías, vídeo y objetos. La interpretación y las poses, los objetos físicos y la tactilidad son utilizados como recursos en las distintas piezas para personificar el mar. Maja Skjøth Hegelund
