READY TO REMODEL

EDITORIAL

It Takes A Village – A Very Large Village It’s an exciting time at Boddie-Noell. Our company is in a period of rapid growth through Hardee’s restaurant expansion. We successfully opened four new Hardee’s restaurants in 2015 and are on pace to open a total of five this year – with one being a rebuild. In addition to these restaurants, our growth plan has put us on course to open 30 more restaurants throughout the next few years.

has never been more necessary than it is today in our current building phase. From initial site selection to the hiring and training of new staff in anticipation for opening day, the new restaurant opening process requires the most teamwork within BNE than any other project. We are fortunate every individual in each department within our company has a unique set of skills that contribute to ensuring our restaurants are successful – this teamwork is the foundation of our village. In addition it takes a team of brokers, attorneys, architects, engineers, contractors and suppliers to help bring a project forward. In reality it takes more individuals to open a new restaurant than any other project

his summer we have also begun a major remodeling project, putting us on schedule to update all of our more than 300 restaurants with a new innovative contemporary design within the next few years. Boddie-Noell has done all of this, while continuing to offer our guests the highest quality products and service in our industry, but how? What makes it all work? It takes a village – a very large village full of our great people. The demanding fast paced nature of our industry requires us to handle a myriad of tasks within a short period of time. This would be impossible without our great people and the high standards of teamwork they exemplify daily. In fact, departmental collaboration D D

we undertake as a company! With many of our long term team members approaching retirement, succession planning gives us the opportunity to incorporate new team members who bring new ideas. We must open the door to new perspectives to create a balance. Whether the new perspectives come from differences in age or experiences, we are fortunate to be able to temper these new ideas with our tried and true methods. We will continue to build on these foundations through effective communication and collaboration. Thank you to everyone “in the village” that helps us grow and operate some of the best restaurants in the industry!

‘Contemporary Star’ Design Modernizes Hardee’s Vibe For more than 50 years, the Hardee’s brand has been built on quality and innovation. As time passes and trends change, BNE is committed to updating our facilities to provide a modern and welcoming atmosphere.

T

his summer, we began the first segment of our “Contemporary Star” design remodels. All of our restaurants will be renovated with this new modern design within the next few years. Our newly built restaurants will also feature this design theme. The “Contemporary Star” design features a sleek new paint scheme with updated décor, lighting, and furnishings giving the restaurant a café style ambiance. D

Wall spaces are adorned with murals custom-designed for each restaurant featuring local historical figures, landmarks, and events associated with the community. Positioning these nostalgic murals next to modern décor finishes enables us to create a contemporary design that appeals to all generations of customers, from Baby Boomers to Millennials. The new boards will ease the introduction of new menu items and making price changes, as well as ensure signage price consistency throughout our restaurants. Other renovations include N.T.S. remodeled restrooms, anSCALE: 1/4" = 1'-0" updated beverage bar, new booths, tables, and chairs, as well as Corian window sills, new window treatments, LED lighting with accent drum light fixtures, and new tile flooring in some locations.

Hardee’s of Nine Mile Road Reopens After Major Remodel

From Left: BNE Construction Manager Tom McClanahan, General Manager Kelly Raine, and R & L Builders Construction Superintendent Raymond Wadsworth. We are deeply saddened by the unexpected October passing of our friend and colleague Raymond. Throughout the past three years, Raymond assisted in building five new Hardee’s. He will be missed by the BNE family.

H

ardee’s of Nine Mile Road in Highland Springs, VA was Boddie-Noell’s first restaurant to undergo the “Contemporary Star” remodel. This remodel was, however, different than the typical remodel process with desired structural changes causing the restaurant to close for several months. General Manager Kelly Raine visited the restaurant on the first morning of remodel, bringing the construction crew sausage biscuits and encouraging them to join hands as she lead the group in prayer – asking the Lord to watch over them. “I told them the BNE family stands behind them and hugged them all,” said Kelly. Kelly said she continued to visit about once a week to say hi, check on the crew’s progress, and thank them for all of their hard work.

The successful remodel was celebrated with a grand reopening celebration on May 24th, welcoming both new and returning guests to expanded seating and a first look at Hardee’s new “Contemporary Star” design. “Our customers love the new atmosphere in the dining room and the openness throughout the restaurant,” said Kelly. “They enjoy being able to see the crew working in the kitchen.” She said the new “community” style table is also very popular and customers constantly comment on the beauty of the building in the early morning or evening when it is lit up with the newly installed LED lights, which customers say also adds an extra sense of security.

Boddie-Noell Continues Support Of Special Olympics Virginia BNE Awarded ‘Highest Honor’ During Opening Ceremony In appreciation of more than 35 years of continual support for Special Olympics Virginia, Boddie-Noell was awarded the Virginia H. Foster Winning Spirit Award, the highest honor bestowed to an individual or organization by Special Olympics Virginia, during the opening ceremony of this year’s annual Summer Games.

V

ice-Chairman and CEO Bill Boddie accepted the award on behalf of Boddie-Noell. “We’re very proud of our Hardee’s and BoddieNoell’s association with Special Olympics Virginia and the loyalty and support our customers have shown over these years in supporting these special athletes,” said Bill. “On behalf of our company and our restaurants, we’re

privileged to receive this recognition.” “Arguably, Boddie-Noell has been our most significant contributor since our incorporation in 1975,” said Rick Jeffrey, President of Special Olympics Virginia. “Their company motto, ‘We Believe in People,’ reflects their commitment to fostering a positive work environment and community for all.” ____________ Rick Jeffrey congratulates Bill Boddie, as he accepts the Virginia H. Region 3 Serves Special Olympics Summer Games Attendees In addition to being a major sponsor of the Summer Games, BNE also donates, cooks, and serves lunch to Summer Games Olympians, their coaches and sponsors, as well as their families each year.

S

erving approximately 3,000 individuals in four hours is no simple feat – this long standing Boddie-Noell tradition takes a great deal of planning and preparation, as well as BNE volunteer participation, according to District Manager Rick Medlin, who has coordinated the event

for more than a decade. From ordering and securing product, to obtaining health department permits, and gathering volunteers, Rick puts in countless hours coordinating every detail. “He does a great job,” explains District Manager Maurice Bartley, “If it wasn’t for

his preparation, the event would never happen.” Regional Vice President of Operations John Smith applauds the dedication and hard work that Rick and the entire Region 3 team put into the event each year. “They do an outstanding job putting it all together,” said

John. “I’m proud to be a part of such a great team and event.” Rick explains his secret to yearly success is running the large scale event like he would a restaurant, with each of the approximately 70 Boddie-Noell volunteers assigned to a “station.” “The more organized we make it, a whole lot more fun and enjoyable it becomes,” explains Rick. Rick said all the planning and hard work is worth it when he sees the young athletes faces filled with pride and enthusiasm. Maurice agrees, reminiscing on his past 20 years of involvement

HARDEE’S in the event, “That is just what we, as a company, are all about,” said Maurice, “Supporting the participants, coaches, and sponsors, giving of our time to feed them, and then seeing their energy and excitement – it’s so rewarding.” “As Christians, it is important to help others, especially those who face everyday struggles,” said District Manager Mark Henry. Meals consist of a hamburger, honey bun, potato chips, an apple or banana, and a bottled water. Every hamburger is cooked on site with Maurice and Mark manning grills transported to Richmond for the Summer Games from BNE’s home office each year. “I absolutely love it, that’s my station,” said Mark. “We grew up on those grills. We are the only ones there that know how to use them,” explains Maurice. District Manager Leo Grogan said he and his wife enjoy being stationed on the front line each year – greeting Olympians and distributing

lunches. As each Olympian approaches BNE’s tent for lunch, Leo announces their name and medals earned, often holding them up in the air in celebration as BNE volunteers clap and cheer – praising each participant’s accomplishments. “It’s our favorite part of the day,” said Leo. “It’s great to see the kids smile, clap their hands, and give us big hugs; they really enjoy it and so do we.” “Leo’s passion and involvement with the kids is awesome,” said Maurice. “To see the smiles on their faces when he announces their names, it just melts your heart,” added Mark.

Thank you Region 3 team for another year of exceptional service and support to our Virginia Special Olympians!

e stop daily at Hardee's in Tramway to meet, greet, and eat with friends. At the time, Derrick Cowan was the Senior General Manager and I mentioned to him that we had

seen a flag flying at a competitor's location and thought a flag at Hardee's in Tramway would be so fitting. Derrick agreed to pass along the request. Another one of my dear

1

Hardee's friends is Regional Director of Operations Andre Jumpp. He and I met about 25 years ago when he was working at Hardee's in downtown Sanford, NC. We have remained in contact for all of these years, so I also passed along the request to him. Imagine my surprise when Derrick texted me, "Ms. Janet, did you hear we are getting a flag?" The text messages flew back and forth! "Are you sure? When? Are You Sure? Who told you?" I was so pleased! To think they had taken my request seriously, knowing they would be spending a bit of money, I was grateful they would consider it. My husband, Floyd Chilton and I have both spent our lives aiding in the defense of the nation for more than 30 years. We love our country and the freedoms we are provided. Our flag is a symbol of these freedoms. With Derrick's assistance, we organized a small flag raising ceremony. On a beautiful, sunny morning, we had about 50

people gather, including many former military and military retirees, Sheriff Tracy Carter of Lee County, Officer Medlin, and other representatives of Law Enforcement; and Derrick, District Manager Annette Jackson, and other Hardee’s team members. Our grandson, Jonathan Pemberton, active duty member of the 82nd Airborne, and his grandfather, Floyd Chilton, retired military, raised the flag and she flew brightly over Hardee’s. We have had hundreds of thank yous and compliments on the installation of the flag. We’re now called the “movers and shakers” of Tramway. Thank you, BNE for your support of our beloved USA! hile having lunch at Hardee’s of Roanoke Rapids #2, I witnessed some of the staff not only be servers doing their normal jobs, but become complete servants helping a fellow man. I had a window seat near the handicap parking and saw an elderly gentleman fall onto the pavement after losing his footing. Immediately I hollered that a man had fallen outside. This is where Hardee’s staff became servants. Angela Gray, who works the register and window, was outside calling 911 7 ENTERPRISER Fall 2016

to direct the EMS. Diana Broady, who works the dining area, was outside assisting the injured gentleman and comforting his wife. The manager, Ms. Juanita Tennessee, was beside him, holding an

ice pack she made to his brow. Now folks, this is exceptional Servanthood. I don’t know of any other restaurant that would have taken the sacrificial measures this staff took. Especially a fast-food restaurant. The staff, and especially Ms. Juanita, went beyond the call of duty and I

was blessed to be a part and witness such an act of selflessness. What the world needs now is love and the staff at Hardee’s, and those few guys in line who helped, are a true replica of God’s love. Thank you all! Nancy Person Published in Roanoke Rapids newspaper ____________ From Left: Angela Gray, Juanita Tennessee, and Diana Broady

L

ead guitarist Jerry Hayes of The Country Ravens jokingly refers to his gigs as the “2016 International Hardee’s World Tour.” On a recent Monday evening, the tour stopped at the Hardee’s at 6075 Indian River Road, where 60 country music fans – mostly senior citizens – filled every available table. A few arrived as early as 1 p.m. for the concert that didn’t start for another five-and-a-half hours. They chatted, ate burgers and played cards to pass the time. As soon as the sounds of the mandolin, drums and guitars filled the restaurant, couples began dancing in the narrow aisles between tables. Similar scenes play out every Monday and Tuesday evening at the Hardee’s on Indian River Road and Thursdays at the Hardee’s Independence Boulevard location. Though most concertgoers live within a few miles of the restaurants, some drive from as

far as Courtland and Franklin. Raymond Stanworth said he never misses a concert. Dressed in a suit, the 94-year-old catches a ride from his home in Hampton and typically has women waiting in line to dance with him. “I like to dance to all the songs,” said Stanworth, who claims dancing six nights a week is what keeps him young. “I know almost every move, and the ones I don’t know, I just fake.”

The Country Ravens – which includes Hayes, Otto Shelor, Garland Abbott and Bob Lee – have been playing the Indian River Road Hardee’s every

Monday night since 2007. All four are members of the Virginia Country Music Association, and three have received the Pioneer Award presented to those who have distinguished themselves in the promotion of country music. The band plays primarily country with a little bluegrass, because “country is a lot easier to dance to,” Shelor said. “We used to be a bluegrass band, but country music is more familiar to our fans. We also take requests. If we know it, we’ll play it.” The four have been playing music all their lives. Shelor started playing the mandolin when he was 4 years old in the Blue Ridge Mountains where he grew up.

Other bands, including Straight from the Heart, play on other evenings. The concerts are the highlight of the week for Susan Davis, who is frequently invited onto the stage to sing with The Country Ravens. Davis, who is blind, reads the lyrics using braille. “The concerts help me unwind from the week and are a form of community involvement,” the College Park resident said. “I have so much fun hanging out here. We call it Hardee’s clubbing.” Reprinted with permission of The Virginian-Pilot

HARDEE’S

Familiar Faces Fill New Restaurant Hardee’s of Olivia opened to an array of familiar faces October 3rd. With dozens of long term Hardee’s customers and employees alike, the restaurant’s location and contemporary style building may be new but many of the relationships within the walls were established decades ago.

L

ocated in Sanford, NC, Boddie-Noell’s newest Hardee’s joins three others in the surrounding area. Senior General Manager Derrick Cowan most recently led the nearby Hardee’s of Tramway team before taking his current leadership role at Olivia. He explains that many surrounding Hardee’s customers have migrated to the Olivia location, and others stop by regularly to catch up with him and other veteran employees. According to Regional Director of Operations Andre Jumpp, Derrick was the first person that came to mind when considering who would lead the new restaurant. “He welcomed the opportunity,” explained Andre. Derrick never imagined that starting as a part-time back line cook 22 years ago would lead him to the career he has today. “Derrick’s overall growth from starting as an hourly

9 ENTERPRISER Fall 2016

employee and moving up through management all the way to Senior General Manager has been exciting to watch. His leadership skills paired with his ability to conquer adversities and challenges thrown his way made him the perfect choice,” said Andre. The Senior General Manager’s first task at Olivia was to assemble the restaurant’s team of crew and management staff. According to Derrick, this also turned out to be the most challenging part of the new restaurant opening process. The labor market in Sanford is tough because there are more job openings than qualified people to fill them, explained

Derrick. However, this did not discourage him. He decided to think outside the box and call old applicants from surrounding BNE Hardee’s locations. “I even asked Mr. Raymond, the construction superintendent, to pass out applications to people that stopped by to inquire about a job when I wasn’t there,” said Derrick. Derrick also sought out “prehires” – individuals employeed at other BNE Hardee’s locations, to build his team. He explained the

restaurant was fortunate to open with about a 50/50 ratio of prehires and new hires. “Our experienced team members’ knowledge has made the opening of Olivia a success. If something needs to be corrected, they do it. I don’t have to ask them,” said Derrick. “Carolyn and Derrick put together a great team,” said Andre. “This team is truly a reflection of what Boddie-Noell strives to be as a company. They rise to meet adversities and challenges and do it with smiles on their faces.” “It feels good to have the restaurant doing well,” explains Derrick, “I’m excited to be here. I could do another opening now and it would be a breeze,” he laughed.

Annual Stars For Heroes Fundraising Campaign Strongest In Recent Years With more than 100,000 patriotic stars hanging from BNE Hardee’s restaurant walls throughout Virginia and North Carolina, the 2016 Stars for Heroes annual fundraising campaign was a major success.

T

his year’s campaign was one of the strongest in recent years, according to Jerry Allsbrook, BNE Chief Marketing Officer. Eighty-one of BNE’s participating Hardee’s restaurants displayed 500 or more stars purchased by customers, explained Jerry. Hardee’s of Celebration Station lead the pack selling 3,028 stars, followed by Hardee’s of Gloucester selling 2,692 stars and Hardee’s of Coeburn, Rustburg, and Belmont each selling more than 2,000 stars. During the month-long campaign, customers were encouraged to purchase $1 commemorative, patriotic star cut-outs and received a Hardee’s coupon sheet valued at $10 in savings on various menu items. Proceeds from this year’s campaign were divided between several charities

with half of the proceeds going to The Patriot Foundation to provide funding for children of killed and wounded soldiers. The foundation also provides a small percentage of funding for child care and aid for families of fallen and disabled soldiers whose surviving spouses need to obtain additional job training and development. The other half of the campaign proceeds benefited USA Cares, Stand Up and Play Foundation, and the Gary Sinise Foundation. “We’re very grateful for the collaboration again with Hardee’s and BoddieNoell,” said Chuck Deleot, President and Board Chair of The Patriot Foundation. “They’ve been supportive of the military and veteran community over the years and we appreciate the generosity of their customers.”

The Hardee’s of Celebration Station team spelled out ‘THANK YOU’ with some of the 3,028 stars the restaurant sold to customers during this year’s Stars For Heroes fundraising campaign.

45 YEARS “I have truly been blessed and I am honored to have been with such an outstanding family company as Boddie Noell for 45 years. I began my career with BNE in South Boston #1 during college as a backline cook. In less than one year I had moved into restaurant management. I met both Mayo Sr. and Nick early in my career and I was very impressed with how down to earth they both were.

Ellis Francis Jr.

There have been many positive individuals along the way that saw potential in me, mentored me, and provided opportunities for continued growth. Today in the Information Services Department I am surrounded by some of the best people in the industry. I enjoy working directly with the Operations Group on a daily basis providing hardware support to the restaurants. Thanks again BNE for Believing in People and especially those that believed in me over these 45 years!”

LOSS CONTROL

LOSS PREVENTION TEAM

COMMITTED TO HELPING YOU

A BAG OF ICE MELT IS WORTH IT’S WEIGHT IN GOLD In order to maintain the safest environment for our guests and employees, we always need to remove snow and ice from our premises when our restaurants are open. When it is not completely removed, it could create safety hazards and increase costs when a guest slips and falls because of this.

From Left: Tracey French, Holly Blythe, Josh Frazier, Ashley Lane, and Bunn Boddie

The Loss Prevention department is undergoing several key changes to improve safety and service to Restaurant Operations. We are focused on getting better service and pricing from our vendors and committed to improving the customer experience you receive from our team.

S

ome of the specific changes we’re working on include:

• Finding and using vendors who are specialists in their fields, instead of using “one size fits all” generalists. For example, if you have a problem with your safe, providing a safe specialist who has the right knowledge, experience, and parts to service your safe correctly the first time. • Reducing the time it takes to close an investigation so that you can focus on driving your core business without having to focus on “what ifs.” • Creating new and compelling LP awareness posters that provide timely information to Restaurant Operation’s teams on a regular basis.

Some of these changes will be rolled out faster than others, but please be assured that we will partner with Restaurant Operations teams before anything is rolled out. Your feedback and ideas are crucial to our improvement. Please always communicate your feedback, concerns, or ideas to our team by calling me at (252)937-2800 x 1266 or emailing me at traceyfrench@boddienoell.com. Our best ideas and improvements often are the result of Restaurant Operations teams feedback. Our ultimate goal is to improve our ability to help you protect the results of your hard work, and most importantly ensure that we are providing the safest and most secure environment for our employees and guests. I

t is very important to shovel areas that the snow plow misses; such as handicap spaces, access walkways, and any parking spaces near the entrances. Also remember to reapply ice melt to icy areas and areas prone to run off and refreezing every few hours. Keep a record of who clears your parking lot and when your parking lot is plowed, when walkways are shoveled, and when ice melt is put down. Use wet floor cones to warn of icy areas that cannot be cleared. Be sure to apply ice melt: • Before a snow/ice/freezing rain storm hits
