Governor Nikki Haley

Representative Allen West

Isreali Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon

From the domestic economy to international security, Club members heard a variety topics from recent guest speakers. Last fall, Club members met two up-and-coming GOP stars -- South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley and Rep. Allen West from Florida. Isreali Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon addressed the Club and the Republican Jewish Coalition in January as tensions mounted between Israel and Iran. Highlights from these and other programs can be found on page 8.

LINCOLN CLUB

President’s Message By Robert W. Loewen

T

his year marks the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Club. I have therefore selected the following excerpts from remarks by Dr. Arnold O Beckman, the founding President of the Lincoln Club, at the Annual Dinner on May 9, 1963. at his words are still relevant in the current political environment could not be more poignant, and after 49 years, it is easily apparent that the Lincoln Club’s adherence to its founding principles has been steadfast.

Robert W. Loewen EXCERPTS FROM ARNOLD BECKMAN’S SPEECH – MAY 9, 1963 LINCOLN CLUB DINNER 1. Background of Lincoln Club e idea of the Lincoln Club arose from the 1962 election. A few of us who had been active in the election were dismayed at the way the campaign was handled. e primary was a vicious one, in which intemperate remarks of Republican candidates created havoc within the Party. For some offices the Republican candidates elected in the primary were of such unimposing stature that most Republicans found it difficult to support them enthusiastically. Large sums of money were wasted, and some sources of substantial contributions for future campaigns were seriously antagonized. So, licking our wounds, a group of us resolved to try to do something about the sad situation. We would not repeat these mistakes and we would try to take constructive action that would lead, not only to unity within the Republican Party, but to the development and election of supericr candidates to public office. 2. Lincoln Club Plan e plan is to build up a small, select group of leading citizens of Orange County who are concerned over the need for good government and are willing to do something about it. e members must command respect in the community and should be adequately known so that their opinions will have an influence among a sizeable portion of the community. ey should be persons of sound, mature judgment. ey should have a stake in the community so that any financial contribution they make will be more than a civic contribution, it will be a prudent business investment. Each member should be an independent thinker, under obligation to no one.

It is expected that opinions of the members will cover the whole spectrum of views of the Republican Party. e Club must never come under the domination of any one group; care must be taken that members of the Board of Directors and committees are selected so as to insure proper representation of the varying viewpoints. To maintain the objective of presenting a solid, united front to the outside while preserving within the Club the advantages of free discussion and examination of all shades of opinion, members should be imaginative leaders, able to examine different views objectively and to reconcile conflicting opinions. Why did we choose the name “Lincoln Club” ? e reason is that Lincoln today is recognized by all Americans as the outstanding symbol of good government, the Club’s objective. His personal characteristics were those we should strive to find in all government officials and, indeed, also in the members of the Lincoln Club. A recent issue (May 10, 1963) of Time Magazine has a lengthy article on Lincoln, from which I shall quote a few sentences to illustrate the close parallelism between Lincoln and his problems and the goals and problems of the Club. First, Lincoln maintained his independent individuality, as the Club must retain its independence. I quote: “Sense of Destiny. He was neither a rebel nor a conservative, but a conserver. He was no artist, except in using public language and in using men. His life was an infinitely varied mixture of leading and following, conforming and defying. He could temporize, compromise, and maneuver. But he always held to his own vision and met the exacting definition of an individual set down by French Philosopher Georges Bernanos: “A man who gives himself or refuses himself, but never lends himself.’ “Above all, Lincoln was an individual in the special double sense that Americans attribute to the word--the common man who is yet uncommon. Second, we are confronted with the task of reconciling differences of opinion within the Republican Party which seemingly stretch from the ultra-liberals to the ultra-conservatives, to unite all Republicans plus, we hope, many Democrats, sc that a solid front can be presented in the fight for good government. Time Magazine quotes Lincoln’s biographer, Benjamin P. omas. Lincoln’s task was “To hold together in wartime a party made up of abolitionists and Negro-haters: high- and low-tariff men, hard- and soft-money men, former Whigs and erstwhile Democrats, Maine law prohibitionists

LINCOLN CLUB

Membership Committee Update By Patrick Maciariello, Membership Committee Chairman

A

few Board meetings ago, I posed a question to those in attendance: What value do you think Lincoln Club membership offers?

It’s an important question. One that I think is probably going to vary greatly. But here are some potential ways to answer a friend or colleague that may be interested in membership if they pose that question to you: 1. Staying informed. One of the biggest values of the Club is being able to see, hear from, and meet with some pretty amazing speakers. Just in the last few months, the Club has hosted notable Congressmen, like Allen West, and the vice prime minister of Israel. Members can not only stay on top of the critical issues of our day but can meet them and ask candid questions, often in relatively small settings.

2. Effecting change. One of my predecessors used to say the Club is like a political mutual fund. Members invest resources into the Club’s PACs, and together, they can ‘invest’ in campaigns and effect change on a larger scale than they could have as individuals. 3. Meeting great people. Ask any member who has been in the Club for a few years why they continue to be a part of it and ‘friendships’ is the most often cited answer. Once a member decides to get engaged, to attend events, or join a committee, he or she will inevitably meet some great people who share similar values that they will develop friendships with. I’d like to hear from you – What value do you think membership offers? Drop me a line at pat@compassequity.com.

Welcome New Members We are pleased to welcome the following new members to the Lincoln Club. We tried to collect as many photos as possible, so if your photo is missing, please send it to Clare Venegas and it will be included in the next edition. If you see one of these members at future Lincoln Club events, please make them feel welcome! A special ‘ank You’ especially to their sponsors.

LINCOLN CLUB

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Robert Karcher, Birth Choice Health Clinics Why did you decide to join the Lincoln Club? What attracted you to the Club?

include freedom of religion, equal access, health care, and immigration.

I joined the Lincoln Club of Orange County because it is an action-oriented organization intent on gathering like-minded individuals that work together, raise support, and advocate for the founding ideals of this country and today’s elected officials that will move this agenda forward.

If you could hand-pick the next U.S. president, who would you choose and why?

What do you consider to be the most important political or public policy issue? What issues are you most passionate about? I believe there is no greater issue facing this country today than insisting on valuing every human life - from conception through natural death. Our forefathers encoded “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” into our Declaration of Independence and, I believe, Life is mentioned first because, without it, the rest matters not! Other issues I am passionate about

I would hand-pick Rick Santorum because, of the current candidates, I truly believe he best-reflects the ideals this country was founded on and he demonstrates such. Without the right foundation to build upon, any candidate is more-easily prone to failure. What is something that most people may not know about you? I come from a very large family tree... as an example, I am one of a group of over 100 first cousins! at’s a lot to keep up with but it is an amazing blessing.

President’s Message continued from page 3 and German beer-drinkers, Know-Nothings and immigrants ... “Modern man lives in many overlapping groups; in each, he must find his place, must have his say, must leave his mark, if he can. In a way, this requires him to be a politician in the highest meaning of the word. Politics is the real means of mediation between the individual and the group. is was Lincoln’s genius. Today’s Americans, enmeshed in community, can only wish for Lincoln’s qualities – he was politic without being unprincipled, patient without being resigned, flexible without being opportunistic, toughminded without being brutal, determined without being fanatical, religious without being dogmatic or unworldly, tender without being sentimental: and devoted to man without worshiping him.”

Jan McDaniel Returning member

During his lifetime Lincoln made many profound statements, some of which may be even more meaningful today than in his time. For the Lincoln Club slogan we have adopted his admonition, “In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to do for them.” For those of you who may have become discouraged over recent political developments and may feel we can’t do much to improve the situation, please consider well these quotations from Abraham Lincoln: 1. e power of hope upon human exertion and happiness is wonderful. 2. Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing. 3. I say “try”; if we never try, we shall never succeed.

LINCOLN CLUB

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Caroline Sabo, Attorney at Law Why did you decide to join the Lincoln Club? What attracted you to the Club? I joined because I like the Lincoln Club’s mission statement, interesting programs, and fellow Club members. Furthermore, I believe the Lincoln Club needs a voice within my demographic. Young adults in their 20’s are passively voting democratic because it’s the popular thing to do. at needs to change, and I look forward to spreading the Club’s message. What do you consider to be the most important political or public policy issue? What issues are you most passionate about? ere are many important political and public policy issues. Generational theft, entitlement programs, and the fact that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are rights that preceded government (not things to be granted by it) are my top issues.

If you could hand-pick the next U.S. president, who would you choose and why? USA Today has a Candidate Match Game, where you weigh in on 11 issues and the program spits out the top three candidates most aligned with your beliefs. It’s a silly exercise, but I decided to play. My top three were Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, and Mitt Romney, respectively. Although I am a huge fan of Ron Paul (he is a hybrid between my grandfather and Magneto from X-Men), he does not exude the power necessary of a president... unfortunate since his message is on point. And, although I find the idea of pompous Gingrich debating Obama very amusing, I do not believe Gingrich (or any candidate other than Romney) is electable. What is something that most people may not know about you? I worked my way through college and law school by modeling and working as a medical research assistant/grant writer.

Programs Committee Update By David Bahnsen, Programs Committee Chairman

F

From national security to statewide tax issues, Club members have heard a variety of speakers on a variety of timely topics. Here’s a quick recap:

In January, the Club hosted an intimate roundtable breakfast with Michelle Steel, Republican member of the Board of Equalization and the highest ranking Republican woman in the state. While this tax Board may seem relatively obscure, it is a powerful bureaucracy that is charged with collecting property taxes, sales taxes, and a myriad of state fees. Also in January, the Club partnered with the Republican Jewish Coalition to host a sold-out lunch with Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon, who discussed the imminent threat of a nuclear Iran to Israel and the misperceptions widely spread by Western media as to the cause of the Arab-Isreali conflict. Club members heard from a panel of Republican congressmen on the topic of healthcare reform in January, thanks to Club member

Page 6

Dr. Marcy Zwelling. Rep. Pete Sessions and two Louisiana members of the House Doctors Caucus, Rep. John Fleming and Rep. Bill Cassidy, discussed and listened to members’ concerns about Obamacare and ideas for reform. Last fall, the Club hosted several Tea Party favorites. First, Rep. Allen West of Florida who delivered a stirring speech about American exceptionalism, and Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina. Both are rising conservative stars to watch out for in the future. In October, the Club hosted a panel on immigration reform, prior to the Club members’ vote on its Immigration Policy Statement. is coming election year promises another slate of equally impressive speakers. Our new “Freedom Forum” speaker series will bring speakers such as Rep. Darrell Issa (March 15), the hilarious conservative pundit Jonah Goldberg (April 16), and Deroy Murdock (Aug. 23). Mark your calendars – more to come!

LINCOLN CLUB

Legislative Committee Update By Michael Reynolds, Legislative Committee Chairman fter a fairly quiet 2011, the Legislative Committee is gearing up for what promises to be a very busy election season in 2012. Six ballot measures have already qualified for the June and November 2012 elections. ese cover issues ranging from legislative term limits and cigarette taxes to legislative “rainy day” funds, auto insurance premiums and clean drinking water. So far, nothing about Indian gaming, wealth taxes or bonds to cover something for the environment (or better yet, for the children). Yet it’s hard to imagine an election without at least one of these topics on the ballot.

A

e Legislative Committee’s main purposes are (1) to review, analyze and evaluate pending ballot initiatives and legislation of significance at the state and local level and (2) to report back and recommend appropriate courses of action to the Club’s Board of Directors or general membership – which can include positions, endorsements and/or financial support. We often host guest speakers, including initiative proponents, initiative opponents and Orange County legislators at the municipal, state and federal level.

One of the brighter spots on the ballot this year will be the “Stop Special Interests Money Now Act,” which will prohibit corporations and unions from making unauthorized deductions from paychecks to finance their political activities. Passage of this measure is vital to California’s future. Naturally, leftwing interests, the Democratic Party and their public employee union financiers will be fighting this tooth-and-nail.

With six ballot initiatives already qualified, and six to ten more expected, we will need all the help we can get. We meet at 5:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, 3161 Michelson Drive, 12th Floor, Irvine. Please join us for our next meeting.

Issues Committee Update By Kathy Gremer, Issues Committee Chairwoman

W

ith the gravity of the upcoming Presidential election, the Issues Committee will be formulating a series of brief messages which will target the typically Democratic demographic groups: students, women, minorities, etc. e theme of these messages will be “Did you know…?”. e Issues Committee will work with the Communications Committee to deliver these messages through the social networking sites. e Issues Committee meets on the last ursday of the month at 5:15 pm and, until recently, had been devoting this time to either of the two subcommittees: Immigration Reform Subcommittee led by Teresa Hernandez and Healthcare Innovations Subcommittee led by doctors Marcy Zwelling, MD and James Huang, DO.

e Immigration Reform Subcommittee meets on the last Tuesday of the month at 5:15 pm. It has achieved its initial goal of formulating a reasonable policy on immigration reform and of obtaining Board approval for this policy to become the official position of the Lincoln Club. e remaining goal is to obtain the endorsement of as many Republican legislators and groups as possible.

anks to Teresa’s tireless efforts this remaining goal is well under way. e Healthcare Innovations Subcommittee meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 pm. e main goal of this subcommittee is to work with legislators and insurance and medical associations toward the repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Simultaneously the committee is formulating a list of insurance reforms which will be integral to the “repeal and replace” position of the Republican Party. e subcommittee position is in its final stages and will be soon presented to the Issues Committee for approval followed by a presentation to the Board of Directors for final approval as the official position of the Lincoln Club. As with the Immigration Subcommittee, the work will be just beginning! All of these meetings are at the offices of Gibson Dunn and Crutcher, 3161 Michelson Drive, 12th Floor, Irvine. Any Lincoln Club member who has a passion for these issues is encouraged to join any or all three of these committees. e more intelligent input the better in accomplishing our goals.

Joint Local Elections & Endorsements Ad Hoc Committees By Ivan Marks, Endorsements Ad Hoc Committee Chairman & James Huang, DO, Local Elections Committee Chairman

O

ur committees have joined forces to tackle the important task of evaluating candidates running for city, county, state and federal offices in the 2012 election. While it seems early in the year, the committee has already been preparing for the ‘busy period’ leading up to the November general election by revising our candidate questionnaire and discussing the interview and evaluation process.

• Assemblyman Curt Hagman, incumbent in the 55th Assembly District

Recently, we were approached to consider endorsements in several primary races. While the Club normally does not endorse in primaries where there are two or more Republicans running, the committee felt the following candidates were worthy of endorsement:

• Assemblywoman Diane Harkey, incumbent in the 73rd

• Congressman John Campbell, a former Lincoln Club member, who will represent the new 45th Congressional District. e Board unanimously endorsed Campbell for re-election. Campbell was recently named a “Defender of Economic Freedom” by the Club for Growth. • Congressman Ed Royce for the newly drawn 39th Congressional District. e committee recommended endorsement when it appeared Rep. Gary Miller would run in the same district. Miller has since decided to run in another district where the incumbent is retiring. • State Senator Mimi Walters, incumbent in the 37th Senate District. • Assemblyman Alan Mansoor is the incumbent in the newly drawn 74th Assembly District and faces another Republican opponent in June.

• Assemblyman Chris Norby, incumbent in the 65th • Assemblyman Don Wagner, incumbent in the 68th

• Supervisor Janet Nguyen, incumbent in the First District, OC Board of Supervisors All of the committee’s recommendations were approved by a supermajority vote at the Club’s February and March Board of Directors meetings. e Club’s PAC Voter Guide can be found on the website, www.lincolnclub.org, and more will be added in the coming months. If you are looking for a way to get involved in the Club, this is a great committee to join. As the year goes on, we will need lots of volunteers to help interview city council candidates and others who request the Club’s endorsement. You can play a big role in who the Club endorses by joining this committee. Contact us – iman7@earthlink.net / jhuangdo@gmail.com – for more information or just attend our next committee meeting. We meet on the first Wednesdays of the month at noon at Farmers & Merchants Bank, 4695 MacArthur Ct., Ste. 130, Newport Beach.

Communications Committee Update By Dan Baren, Communications Committee Chairman

B

uilding the Club’s brand through social media will continue to be one of the main focuses of this committee for the 2012 election year. Since we launched a modest Facebook ad campaign last year, the Club’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/LincolnClubOC) has more than 550 ‘likes’. Updates are posted daily to Facebook and Twitter, so find us on Facebook if you haven’t already and share our page with your friends. Each election cycle, the Club produces a Voter Guide which lists the Club’s official candidate endorsements and positions on various ballot measures. e June primary will have a few

Page 8

primary races and ballot measures of interest, so the committee will focus on how to promote the Club’s November Voter Guide. In addition to these tasks, we are always looking for members who like to write blogs, which can be very short commentaries about news items of the day, and good writers, who can help pen opinion pieces that can be submitted to local newspapers like the Register. Contact me if you’d like to help our committee spread the word about the Lincoln Club’s news and views – danbaren@yahoo.com.
