EVENTS Errol Douglas, 44, is the UK’s leading black and Asian hair stylist, renowned for his classic styling, striking cuts and the best blow-drying and polished finishing in London. The coveted stylist has won several of the world’s most revered awards as well as being named Cosmopolitan’s ‘Ultimate Man of the Year’ in 2008 for his charity work. In 2008 Errol Douglas was awarded an MBE for services to hairdressing – an incredible acknowledgement of his work educating and nurturing new talent within the industry. His luxurious salon in Motcomb Street, Knightsbridge is frequented by many A list celebrities such as model Iman, Kelly Rowland and Christina Ricci. Lime caught up with Errol to get the gist on getting the best cuts and styles to compliment all face shapes and make you look your best for the festive season. What are the hottest hairstyles can you suggest for people with different face shapes (round shape, pear shape, square shape) for the party season? If you have a pear shape face it’s good to flatter the face and have more shape around the top and sides as usually if you have a pear shape or heart shape face you have a beautiful chin and you can show that off. If you have a square shape, make sure your hair is not

going past your jaw, make it a bit soft, don’t make it a hard solid line like a bob, have a bit of a shape to it like a half fringe – not a full fringe, like something sweeping to one side which is quite cool – If your face is really round, be careful with too much volume – you need things that are going to soften your cheekbones and forehead and also with any of these hairstyles if you have very strong features adding a bit of colour will soften up the look. What hairstyles do you think will be most popular in 2010? The fringe, as a lot of fringe is coming back – not the pob’s with straight fringes – we’re having a lot of soft fringes. Lots of undercuts are coming back, with a lot of weight left on the top so you have a lot of duality and can have it many ways or undercut on one side or both sides – a lot of girls are now having the shaved hair on one side – that’s filtered out everywhere and it’s quite a catwalk look. Also, a lot of crops are coming back. Whose hair would you most like to style that you have not done yet? Liv Tyler, Scarlett Johansson are both amazing – funnily enough although people slag her off and put her down, I think Whitney Houston’s new press images look amazing. Megan

‘H

air is the most powerful and dramatic statement any woman can make’

Fox looks great and Jennifer Aniston looks quite cool. What are the best products for Afro hair? I would say Vito, Affirm, and Errol Douglas Products soon to release one day - woo hoo. What is your advice to women with natural hair who find it difficult to vary their hairstyles without committing to a perm? Shave it off. Forget it, no ones interested – only joking. Natural hair that is healthy looks beautiful and amazing. Natural hair that is dry, needs combing out and is picky is awful. It’s not flattering is it? What advice would you give to natural hair women in regards to the best products to use to maximise their natural curls? There are loads of products, such as Loosely

Defined from the Matrix range from the design Pulse range, there’s a couple on the Affirm range that are leave-in which are great. With the forthcoming release of the film Good Hair in mind – what are your views on weaves? It’s not that good, I can’t see what all the fuss is – it’s funny but it’s not amazing. I think weaves and any extensions help women – but women have to know when to stop using them just like a hairdresser has to know when to give good advice. They are great in small doses. It’s not damaging as such, but the hair weakens. You have to give your hair at least six months. I would say the maximum time to wear a weave is a year – a lot of people have it for three or four years and then suffer afterwards. What has been the highlight/ proudest moment of your career so far? Receiving the MBE and the Cosmopolitan award as it was independent of what I do. I’m only the fourth person in the country in this profession to be awarded one and the youngest.

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH Picture credit: Eiko Ishioka

Cirque Du Soleil’s twin performers Andre and Kevin Atherton reveal the secrets behind the magic. Words: Michelle Adabra

T

he biggest show on earth Cirque du Soleil has enthralled audiences around the world with its awe-inspiring acrobatic performances, beautiful choreography and amazing costumes. Now the show is set to return to the Royal Albert Hall in January 2010 - where it last captivated 185,000 spectators. Back with the magical Varekai – which means ‘wherever’ in the Romany language of the gypsies – one of the highlights of the show is Wigan born twin brothers, Kevin and Andre Atherton. The former gymnast brothers have been performing gravity defying stunts on aerial straps for the last ten years in Cirque du Soleil. LIME caught up with the brothers on a break from rehearsals in Russia to talk about their incredible acrobatics, touring the world and what makes Cirque du Soleil the greatest show on earth. So how did two boys from Wigan end up in the greatest show on earth? Kevin: (Laughs). We were both gymnastics from the age of seven and we pretty much worked our way through the ranks until we ended up on the national team representing Great Britain in the sport and that’s where the Cirque du Soleil scouts spotted us;

‘There is a degree of danger as we have no safety net but we take special care and wouldn’t do anything stupid.’

said yes. We’ve travelled the world with Cirque and have experienced so many different cultures; I think the show has 18 or so different countries represented by the cast so it has been a great experience for us.

they have their own scouts who travel all around the world looking for talent. They asked us when we retire would we be interested in joining Cirque and we

You’re twins - have you always held the same interests? Kevin: No we haven’t, it’s funny because growing up we had very different interests. Andre’s a bit more

creative and I have more of a mathematical mind and that’s always been the case, we were always in separate classes and did separate subjects; we only came to work together when we came to Cirque at the age of 24. We were used to working individually as gymnasts so working as a duo was very challenging in the first few months. Describe your aerial straps routine?

EVENTS

Andre: For the first half of the act we work on separate straps which are suspended in the air but we move in complete sync with each other so if Kevin moves I move etc. For the second part of the act we come together on one strap, it’s a sequence of strength and dance moves. The routine involves great heights and we move at great speeds, we are both quite strong and flexible so we spent time coming up with quite a physical routine. How dangerous is the routine?

Kevin: There is a degree of danger as we have no safety net but safety is the biggest priority at Cirque and they wouldn’t allow us to do anything that could possibly put us at risk. We do have special locks that hold if the straps aren’t working but we do take special care and we wouldn’t do anything stupid. What do you think makes Cirque du Soleil so successful? Kevin: I think the reason why it has been so successful is because the show is the actual star itself. In our show there are ten acts but there is not one act that is the star it’s the acts, with the costumes; the musicians and the set – it’s everything combined, the overall experience. We can remember when we saw our first ever Cirque show and it takes you out of this world, it’s a two hour show full of

enjoyment, fun, passion and escapism and that’s what makes it so special. • In honour of its 25th anniversary, Cirque du Soleil will bring a London favourite – the awe-inspiring Varekai – to the Royal Albert Hall from January 5th, 2010. Tickets are now on sale at

henever Bangladesh is the news, it’s almost always about its struggle to overcome poverty and natural disaster. But one man who is trying to promote a positive image of the country is the famous Edinburgh-based Bangladeshi chef and businessman Tommy Miah. He is on a mission to make Bangladesh famous for its tea throughout the world with his new business venture which involves making a chain of 500 tea bars across the country over the next five years. Most of them will be managed by graduates of his vocational training school, the Tommy Miah Hospitality Management

Institute. The Tea Bars will add pleasure and refinement to the joy of tea drinking in Bangladesh. Importantly, they will also contribute to the country’s economic development by creating up to 5,000 new jobs. How did you come up with the idea for a Tea Bar? As there are not many skilled people in Bangla-

(12) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

desh, I have been running a training hospitality and management for the past five years. Maybe not everyone in my institute brilliant but there are a few who want to set up a business on their own. Setting up a tea bar is not very difficult and I also give them finance so it creates about eight to ten jobs. The first one is opening in December and I

have already got about ten clients who want to set up Tea Bars. So your clients are the poor people of Bangladesh? Yes. The trade has changed; they want to stay in Bangladesh. Not everyone wants to jump on a ship and come to this country. There are enough jobs in Bangladesh if you are trained and qualified. But if you look at the Tea stall on the corners of the street right now, they are unhygienic and I want to change that.

EVENTS So what kind of tea will you serve? You have you masala teas, tea lattes, bubble teas and a range of other flavours. It’s not just tea, there will healthy snacks and salads instead of fried samosas so they can live longer.

How does the market for tea in Bangladesh compare with the UK? Around 95 per cent of our tea produced in Bangladesh stays in Bangladesh and only five per cent gets exported. If you look at every household, we have tea in the morning and in the afternoon. If you multiply that there are about 25,000 outlets in Bangladesh from street to in-house so you can imagine how much tea is being made. So how does the business model work? I’m trying to tell the people that you can run a good clean hygienic business. Say you want to take a franchise from me. you have to do a one month course with me. It’s not a lot; we are only charging around 80, 000 taka (£700) per year. If they want to take a franchise, they only pay one month and we only take a small retainer

monthly. We provide them with the skills to run their own good quality tea bars.

“L

ook at me. I’m 50 but a lot of people don’t know that but I look after myself. In the morning I only eat fresh fruits and in the late afternoon I have my lunch.” Is there a filtering process? Yes, I have about 400 people working for me on this project with my institute (The Tommy Miah Hospitality Management Institute) and next year I’ll have about 500. I don’t want it to be for the rich, I’m aiming it at the poor people, so we just have to select the people carefully.

How do you keep healthy? Look at me. I’m 50 but a lot of people don’t know that but I look after myself. In the morning I only eat fresh fruits and in the late afternoon I have my lunch. Normally Bangladeshi’s eat an hour before bed time but your stomach is full and you can’t digest it so what I do is have something three or four hours before I go to bed and I eat vegetables. How will the tea bar be different to Starbucks and Costa? They are selling coffee and we are selling tea so I have about 20-30 types of tea like masala tea, green tea, white tea, Darjeeling tea, all sorts of flavours. Are your clients women as well? This is what I am trying to encourage as it’s mainly always men. But the next time you come to my institute, you will see that I have about 30 per cent women learning to cook so

I’m encouraging women entrepreneurs. My first client will be a woman who runs a beauty parlour - she is very keen to take one on. What’s the secret to making a good cup of tea? It’s no secret, it’s simple. Whether it’s making tea or cooking, you’ve got to enjoy it. There are thousands of chefs who all use the same spices but I enjoy what I do! So if it comes from the heart, you will make a good cup of tea. How will your tea be priced? It’s going to be very cheap. If you buy tea for eight taka (7 pence) in the street, you pay ten (8 pence) taka inside so everyone can afford it. Are you trying to promote a positive image of Bangladesh around the world? Yep, that’s the logo ‘promoting positive Bangladesh’. If you want my concept, you have to carry that logo. If you look at the image of Bangladesh in the western world, it’s only ever floods and poverty, I’ve been trying to change this for the last five years. What’s your long term plan? To open around 500 tea bars in the next four to five years across Bangladesh. I’ll open a few here but the idea is to get other people to take a franchise. • The first Tea Bar will open in Syhlet on December 12.

f you want some inspiration on where to go for alternative Christmas food delights, then Borough Market in south London is your destination. Follow your nose as the hustle and bustle takes you on a journey of aromas and scents to tempt even the fussiest of palettes. There’s cheese, bread, fish, meats, wine, vegetables, pates, warm cider, chocolates, cakes and plenty more delightful foodie treats.

A TASTE OF BOROUGH MARKET AT CHRISTMAS

Grab your warmest winter coat, your gloves and your scarf and head to London’s Borough Market for some yummy Christmas finds.

LIME picks out some of the best of Borough Market’s offerings: L’artisan du Chocolat Indulging in some good quality chocolate can have a wonderful effect. You couldn’t go wrong with a box of chocolate for a Christmas gift. If you want to be a bit more adventurous then how about some homemade chocolate spread for that chocoholic on your Christmas list?

Prices start from £2.00 for stocking fillers and £8.00 for a box of chocolates. You’ve got someone on your list who has a sweet tooth but isn’t a big fan of chocolate, no problem,

you could try the Amesha Sweets stall. Here they sell delicious Middle Eastern delicacies, including variations of Baqlava. Prices start from £1.55 for 100g.

Christmas often makes us feel like donating to a special cause and you get the opportunity to do just that if you buy some Christmas cards from the Food Chain charity. The Food Chain provides nutrition services and nutrition advice to men, women and children who are chronically sick as a result of HIV related illness.

EVENTS On a few Saturday’s over the Christmas period, they will be setting up home at Borough Market. You can buy a pack of their ‘Cattle are lowing’ cards and prices start from £3.75 for ten. Visit foodchain.org.uk if you can’t make it down to Borough. Borough Market reaches full capacity on a Saturday afternoon so arrive early or come prepared for the jostling that comes with any popular market. It’s worth it though, as you’ll have crossed some names off your Christmas list, walked away with some special treats and a smug sense of happiness having supported the local food trade. Ooh talking of food, again, as I mentioned before Borough Market is a great place to pick up some meat – sizzling or otherwise. If all that shopping leaves you a bit peckish you could sample some of the mouthwatering freshly made venison or steak burgers, or prawn or tuna wraps.

Then keep your hands warm as you sip some, hot, spicy cider from the New Forest Cider stall. Despite the long, long queues, something I think is a good sign, it’s worth the wait. Prices start from £1.50. Although the amount of stalls offering mini samples of their food treasures as you wander by is enough to provide a light lunch as you pick up bite-sized chunks of the various offerings from the numerous food stalls. Back to matters in hand, another chocolate store to visit is Dark Sugars. Priding itself as being the only black-owned stall in Borough Market and having been there since the Market was opened eight-yearsago, Dark Sugars is ideal for picking up a last minute dessert for a Christmas dinner party. Founder and marketer Paul Sutherland recommends the date, stem ginger and walnut cake as the perfect Christmas afters, saying: “What it doesn’t have in looks it makes up for in

pen entering Aquum you’ll be greeted be a dazzling chandelier – which serves as a perfect metaphor for Aquum: modern, sophisticated and sumptuous. With its dark and rather sexy lighting, great use of space and hip, professional clientele – it’s clear to see why the bar/restaurant is so popular. After looking over their impressive drinks menu, I settled on a Lychee and Peach Martini which was fresh, slightly

syrupy and totally divine, a perfect accompaniment to a diverse yet tasty modern European menu. I tucked into the rump steak served with a peppercorn sauce (or dauphinoise) alongside gorgeous thick, hand cut chips; I was impressed with the tenderness of the steak and the fluffy nature of the chips – yummy! For desert, spoil yourself with a choice of apple crumble, chocolate brownie amongst others accompanied with delicious vanilla ice cream.

T

his has been the year of comebacks and 2010 looks set to be the same with the return of one of the world’s biggest selling female artists, Toni Braxton. The multi-platinum, six- time Grammy award winning songstress has sold 40 million records world wide and her second album Secrets (1996) was an international smash, delivering hit after hit, including Unbreak My Heart, How Could An Angel Break My Heart and You’re Making Me High. However despite the phenomenal success and critical acclaim there was another story taking place behind closed doors. To say Toni Braxton has had her fair share of drama would be an understatement. In 1998 the multiplatinum singer filed for bankruptcy in a highly publicised case which saw her become tabloid fodder. Later she would pull out of her 2006 headline Las Vegas show after a chest pain complaint and recently it was rumoured that the singer’s California house was up for foreclosure after missed mortgage payments. But after a turbulent few years, the diva with the velvet voice has returned and it’s a new day. The songstress - who has a 7-year-old autistic son and is the spokesperson for charity Autism Speaks – is back fighting with an incredible new album Pulse. The beautiful, witty and remarkable Toni Braxton spoke to Lime about her highly publicised bankruptcy, raising a son with autism, her music and why she’s

ready to take on the world! So you’re back with a new single Yesterday and new album Pulse, tell us about the project.

(18) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

Yesterday is the first single to be taken from the album and I love the song. The remix also features Trey Songz who is a real talent. I’m really happy with album

as a whole, I’ve put a lot into it and I hope people like it! Your father is a pastor, how did he feel about your music in the beginning?

MUSIC Yes that’s right I’m a PK – preachers kid (laughs). Actually he was ok I think the people in the church congregation were more bothered than he was. My father has always been supportive but when I was much younger it wasn’t ok to listen to secular music at all but I started singing when I was older; I was in college when I got signed so he was better about it. Your bankruptcy was very messy and highly publicised at the time – what happened? The bankruptcy was a good thing in a way as it allowed me to help other artists. For example my case was made public like that because I was at the pinnacle of my career but Usher, TLC, NSYNC were going through it but no one really knew – they only knew about me and TLC, so the girls tend to be made an example of. When you file bankruptcy it means all your contracts are null and void, the reason my case was made as public as it was is because that meant my music would be null and void, so the record company was fighting that. The second thing that a lot of people don’t know about is my royalty statement at that time was just under two thousand dollars. For 10 years I couldn’t talk about it because there was a gagging order but now my 10 years has passed and I can say what happened. So imagine I’m on tour with UnBreak My Heart and I get my royalties statement and its one thousand and nine hundred plus dollars! How did you feel? I was surprised. I was in Germany at the time and my business manager called and when he told me I just didn’t believe him. Whatever money the record

company pays, you have to pay it back – the product pays for itself. How did you get through this period? My peers, my family, my faith, my spirituality, friends I kept them close to me. When you’re going through things you really know who your friends are so the others were weeded out immediately and I knew who my real friends were. I’m very aloof and I don’t have a lot of friends purposely. Were you given advice on the music business in the early part of your career? I used to say that artists should know about their contracts but people tell you if you’re gonna be a big star than you need to be with a major label. Now the label tells you this is your profit and this is what you make and everyone signs this contract. Unfortunately I had two big albums the first …and Secrets which was even bigger but I with the same contract, we tried to renegotiate but it wasn’t half way fair so I was forced to file for bankruptcy. How did you feel about having such a private matter out in the public domain like that? Yes it is a very private matter but I was to be made an example of. My situation went to congress because they wanted all artists who file for bankruptcy in the future to have rights. As it was when you file bankruptcy all contracts are made null and void except recording artists so my case was to be made the example. Did all of this take a big toll on your health? Yes over a period of time I think it did. I think going through the court thing and then going through getting

out of my deal with Blackground and then the stress of my son having autism, it really did beat my body up a little bit and then that’s when I got ill last year. Was that experience the dark side of fame for you? Probably yes that was the dark side but right now my husband and I are

‘I

was to be made an example of. My situation went to congress because they wanted all ists who file for bankruptcy in the future to have rights.’

art

separated so it’s dark once again. We’re fine, we’re friends and it’s amicable; we’re just trying to raise our kids together without actually being together and it’s new, it’s only been six weeks. How did you feel when you heard about the death of Michael Jackson? Gosh it was very surreal to me, I heard about his passing before the press did because I’m with AEG and so was Michael Jackson. When I found out I didn’t believe it because I’m a huge fan. I remember when I first met him; he came over to me which was a really big deal. We were at a charity ball and he came over to me and said, ‘Toni Braxton oh my God I love you, your voice is so incredible, so androgynous – it’s

so unique. Breathe Again is my favourite song, let’s take a picture together.’ Of course I was like, ‘it’s Michael Jackson!’ Years later he called me on my phone and introduced himself but I was like, ‘yeah right please like that’s Michael Jackson’ and put down the phone! Then his assistant called and was like, ‘no seriously Toni - it’s Michael Jackson’, when he called back I was like ‘Michael I’m so, so sorry’ and he said: ‘everyone does that, I’m used to it!’ Your son has autism, has it been challenging raising a child with special needs? I am a full time mum and I love being a mother, it’s the best job in the world but you do need a lot of patience, it can be challenging having a special needs child but he’s lovely. He’s doing well because we found out really early we were able to get him into itemised programmes, so he’s talking and he’s much more social. I kind of stumbled into become the spokesperson for Autism Speaks, I was researching and trying to find out more about my son when someone from the charity called me up. Is it true that you can play the piano? Do you play on any of your own tracks? Yeah I play on a lot of my tracks if you look at the credits it will say my name on piano or on additional keyboard. I’ve been playing the piano since I was 12 and I always play when I’m on tour. So the die-hard fans that come to the shows know I play but at first people didn’t know; I remember reading a review which said Toni Braxton faux played her way through How Could An Angel Break My Heart. • Pulse is out 22 February 2010.

ROY AYERS + DJ Ralph Tee (Jazz fm) Roy Ayers could very well be the best jazz/R&B artist you don’t know. In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, he has produced a string of soul and funk classics, like “We Live in Brooklyn Baby” and “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown. You may have heard snippets of his music in songs by 50 Cent protégé Tony Yayo (“Fake Love”) or A Tribe Called Quest (“Bonita Applebum”). But while the exposure of his extensive catalogue is enough to boost any man’s ego, the 68-year-old Ayers remains humble and busy. Just last year, Ayers and Kanye West were enlisted to produce “In the Mood” a modish jazz cut off Brooklyn MC Talib Kweli’s seminal CD Eardrum, and Ayers continues to tour and work on an album due to drop in 2009, which he says may feature the exhilarating, highly underrated jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Meanwhile, Verve has reissued three of his albums from the 1970s, which highlight some of his best work.

MUSIC The Lime gig review: Maxwell, 15 November, 2009 Brixton Academy Words: Michelle Adabra Lime Rating:★★★★★

A

sweltering Brixton Academy played host to soul singer Maxwell’s second London date and what a musical extravaganza it was! Having been absent for seven years, many speculated if he would ever return to the stage, however the now afro-less crooner is back and sounding like he never left. Clearly loving every second on stage, he delivered classic after classic with seemingly minimal effort, his clear falsetto vocal sent the audience (particularly the ladies) into frenzy. He shone on This Woman’s Work, Fortunate, Cops Come Knocking and a divine rendition of Al Green’s

classic, Simply Beautiful. Using the full measure of the stage, he danced without abandon and filled the intervals with warm thank yous to the audience and rather salacious jokes – the ladies weren’t complaining and the stage was soon littered with lacy panties. His new material sounds like classic Maxwell, just slightly matured and one of the show’s highlights was an exquisite performance of Pretty Wings which is taken off the current album BLACKsummer’s night. To conclude: the Brooklyn born singer is like the finest of wines – he just gets better and better with time. Borrow, beg, steal to get tickets for his 2010 dates.

SIMPLY ADDICTIVE Heating up the UK dance scene T

he UK’s hottest sexy duo Addictive are back with the phenomenal pop and electro infused new single ‘Domino Effect’ - recorded and mixed by Grammy Award Winner Simon Gogerly who has worked with the likes of Gwen Stefani and U2. Additive’s debut single, the T2 produced ‘Gonna Be Mine’, was a bass-line banger and a colossal club hit when it was released in 2008, propelling the sexy twosome into one of the UK’s hottest dance acts. Lime caught up with the east London based duo, Aisha Stuart, 23 and Louise Began, 21 to talk about X-Factor, writing songs and conquering America.

What is your new single ‘Domino Effect’ about (and when was the release date)? Louise: Our new single Domino Effect is basically about falling for someone and the domino effect is the metaphor for this – it’s a feel good track, very vibrant and sexy too. It had a soft release on the 19th October and is available on iTunes. You recently went to New York, visited radio stations and the Billboards to promote your new single ‘Domino Effect’ what was that like and how was the single received? Aisha: It was received really well and they are really keen to hear our finished album! I

(22) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

think they were impressed by our vocals, we sang live at each radio station because it’s really important that people recognise we can actually sing. Is conquering America a part of the Addictive plans for the future? Aisha: I’d like us to be successful worldwide; well that’s the dream anyway! Louise: Conquering America is definitely part of the plan for us in the near future, but we got to do it on home soil first! I just want everyone to hear us sing and see us perform and just share our music with the people. Your debut single ‘Gonna

Be Mine’ released in 2008 made it to the top 40 in the UK charts and was a huge number one hit on MTV Base, how did you feel about that success? Aisha: It was a great feeling and I think it opened up a lot of doors for us. I think the best part of it was when we had PA’s people singing your song whilst you perform is the best feeling and that’s when I realised I was actually living my dreams. What differentiates you from other female acts in the industry? Louise: I think what differentiates Addictive from other female artists in the UK is that we are real vocalists with

MUSIC

big voices and that’s not always the case for groups as such. We write all our own material and address subjects we feel strongly about - being real is always important. What can we expect from your debut album when it’s released in the spring of 2010? Aisha: We recorded half our album in Atlanta and New Yorkworked with producers that have worked on Rihanna’s new album, Destiny’s Child, and Anita Baker. We worked with Right Trax – a new production team signed to Kanye West. Back home with Andy Chatterley who’s got credits on Missy and Kyane’s albums and Tom Kent who is a big producer in the dance scene. I think our album is very diverse and universal. Who have you collaborated with on the album and what artists or acts would you most like to collaborate with? Louise: We haven’t done any collaboration for this album, however we have a lot of remixes done for ‘Domino Effect’ and collaborated with some great producers and MC’s too, for example Ghetts. I would love to collaborate with Daniel Merriweather as I think his vocals are excellent and I

‘W

e love heels, sequins and anything sexy!’ just love his music, maybe chipmunk too. Your single ‘Domino Effect’ has already had rave reviews in the national press and magazines – what is happening next for you? Louise: Since the great feedback from ‘Domino Effect’ we are doing lots of performances (‘BBC Maida Vale Sessions for 1 Xtra’) and interviews but also recording more material and just keeping the ball rolling. Louise, you beat Leona Lewis in the UK Unsigned singing contest coming first place at just 13, do you think had Addictive entered X-factor it might have propelled you into the music elites quicker? Yes I did beat Leona Lewis in a singing competition. I think when you enter X Factor it gives anyone instant exposure that all artists need but I personally think to have real success and be respected as a real artist you’re better off not going on there.

Aisha, your sister Shanna Goodhead was heavily tipped as a sure winner at the beginning of 2009’s X-Factor auditions after singing Eva Cassidy’s ‘Songbird’ but didn’t make the cut in the end – do you think the judges made the wrong decision? Aisha: I think they made the wrong decision, Shanna has an amazing voice and a beautiful spirit, I’m not saying that because she is my sister. Everything happens for a reason she is not meant to be in the show this year - after all the shock eliminations I can see why. Your video for Domino Effect is very sexy and sassy is that how you would describe your fashion sense? Louise: I think ‘Domino Effect’ definitely reflects our fashion sense. We love heels,

sequins and anything sexy. You’ve seen the video right? One of your singles on the album is ‘Imagine’ which talks about the pressures on women and girls to be slim and a size zero, what are your views about that? ‘Imagine’ tackles issues with body image, this is something personal to us as the majority of females feel that pressure to look a certain way and as an artist these pressures can sometimes be worse. What impact would you like to make on the music industry? Louise: I want the industry to recognise us for the artists that we are-we work so hard on our vocals, performance, song writing and image and we want to represent for the females and hopefully be great role models.

Lime Reviews Album review: Leona Lewis Echo

Words: Catherine Smiles

Lime rating: ★ ★ ★

As I returned to the country from my holiday to a land far far away, I hailed a taxi home from th airport and the first song I heard through the radio was called ‘Happy’ the first single off the 2nd album from the X factor winner who really got the phenomenon underway, Leona Lewis. It was the lead single from sophomore effort ‘Echo’ and with her ever so angelic voice and a corker of a song, I was unofficially welcomed back home. Following up her 6 million plus selling debut album ‘Spirit’ this highly anticipated 2nd album will no doubt take Leona to the next level in her musical legacy. So after a year of flying back and forth to LA, sharing stages with Beyonce Knowles and Mariah Carey, being styled by Vivienne Westwood and being undeservedly attacked by a fan who perhaps loved her a little too much, has Leona somehow taken all that life experience and become a better recording Artist? The answer is YES. Echo is a really impressive effort from the 24 year old hackney native; she has clearly evolved and continues to master her craft which is of course, her voice. There’s dance, rock, pop, there is an even an Arabic flavoured song and to top it off a nice R&B number co-written and featuring Mr Timberlake himself. Don’t worry there is heaps of nice slow ballads with plenty of those Leonaisms we love so much. Tracks to take note of: Don’t let me down, Lost then found feat One Republic, Brave

Album review: Foo Fighters – Greatest Hits Words: Hannah Cook

Lime rating: ★ ★ ★

Filling stadiums around the world, sharing a stage with rock gods Led Zeppelin, and producing some of the most creative videos in recent years, it’s undeniable that the Foo Fighters are one of the biggest and most successful bands of our time. This week saw the release of their much anticipated Greatest Hits, and if ever a band were made for such an album, it’s the Foos. Over their 6 album back catalogue, alongside the super-hits, they’ve been guilty of the odd filler track, and taking the cream of this repertoire provides an exhilarating, hour and a half of pure rock and roll, climaxing perfectly with unflinchingly beautiful acoustic version of Everlong, and new single Wheels, which holds its own nicely amongst the classics. Like all greatest hits albums, however, it does fail in showing the true breadth of the band, so if you like what you hear here, go treat yourself to The Colour and the Shape for Christmas.

Lime Reviews for the up and coming festive period.

Album review: Harry Connick, Jr: Your Songs

Words: Rachel Duchnowski

Lime rating: * * * The dulcet tones of Mr Connick, Jr. reign again in what is an easy album to listen to, providing you with a compilation of familiar big band songs. This time round Connick is teaming up with the legendary Clive Davis, of Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys fame, allowing Connick to focus primarily on the orchestration and arrangement of the songs selected by Davis. The result being a more light and mellow sounding album, taking you back to the golden years of big bands and smoky clubs. The album opens with “All The Way”, with hints of subtle horns and smooth strings making way for tenor saxophone solo by Branford Marsalis. Moving onto a more honky-tonk jazz version of Elton John’s “Your Song”, and ending with the bonus track of “And I Love Her” with Carl Bruni which is surprisingly well collaborated. This album offers a more easy listening but yet poppy approach to our old favourites, an ideal buy

Book review: Black Shoes by Michael Obiora Words: Michelle Adabra

Lime rating: * * *

Daniel Martins the 25-year-old protagonist of Black Shoes is a very troubled man, despite wealth, success and the love of a good woman Daniel finds himself trapped in Bermuda triangle of questioned identity, negative stereotypes and unfaithfulness, why you may ask? Well Daniel is black and determined not to be taken for a ride by anyone - even if that means dire consequences for his future. It’s surprising that Black Shoes is Obiora’s first novel as he probes and wrestles with Daniel’s character like someone who has been writing for years. Obiora reveals a complicated, layered and three dimensional character in Daniel. You begin to question if he really is a victim of racism, stereotypes, ignorance and numerous failed institutions or is he simply a spoilt, big baby who refuses to take responsibility for his actions, hmm you decide. A morality tale, with more than a ring of truth to it for modern Britain – this is a great start for the actor/ author. Info: www.troubador.co.uk/matador

TEBBS Second Chances – The Sierra Leone Experience TEBBS Second Chances founder, Fiona Luke shares experience on the organisation’s first stationery drive. Words: Fiona Luke

W

ell, when I started this project in December 2008, in my head all I was doing was sending stationery to some children in Freetown Sierra Leone. What I didn’t realise was that it would end up being much bigger than that. I chose Freetown because I thought it will be easier for me to handle. You know, just send a few items over. Easy. Piece of cake. Let’s just say that if God had shown me the whole picture, I would have said no thank you; maybe another time. I went there on holiday in December 2008, not really knowing why I was going (because none of my friends were going) but somehow I knew that I had to. A friend of mine actually nicknamed me ‘Billy No Mates’, because of how desperate I was to find someone who was travelling to Sierra Leone at the same time that I could hang out with. My first challenge was to find the schools, but I needn’t have worried because God handed them to me on a plate. As soon as I met the children at the two schools that I chose, I knew it was the right thing … although I was still ‘kicking and screaming’ and very apprehensive; I convinced people that I was simply doing some investigation for someone I knew who was thinking of doing a project. I returned to London in January 2009 with all the information I needed, but didn’t have a clue how to

go about getting the project ‘out there’. The journey had now well and truly begun:• First, it started with setting up the project, choosing the right logo, proofing the flyers and wondering how the website would be done and by who. I must say, God

(26) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

• Then came Basil Lumsden, the best website designer ever. • Along came Richard who caught the vision and interpreted it through the logo and flyer. • Katrina then introduced me to her brother who blessed me with so many wonderful reading books way beyond anything I could have imagined. • Then came Martyn, Dion and Yvonne Garcia with their constant support and encouragement. • And finally, Denise with her eye for detail. Telling my family was the hardest part for me. I so wanted them to approve of what I was doing, especially my brothers. The first person I shared the vision with was the Bishop at my church, then

that same evening I called a family meeting and told my family. My mother and my brother Stephen were very happy, my mother because I named the project after her mother and Stephen well because I am his little sister. I was always apprehensive about whether or not I could do it, especially during the times when there weren’t any donations coming in and I had to think of ways to remind people to donate

About Hi-Lance International School The school was founded by Mr Sebestine Hi-Lance. The vision to start a school came about when he met a group of children playing by a bridge in the Kingtom area where he lived, who should have been in school at that particular time of the day. He started to hold small classes under a tree and before he knew it, the number of children had grown to the point where it became impractical for him to continue in that fashion. Hi-Lance School was opened on October 1st, 2003 in a small building with 30 students. They have now been evicted from that building. Current status The school is located in New Street, 7up, Kingtom with 200 students in attendance. The entire school is run in a cramped building with just three rooms, where three or more classes are held in each room with partitions to separate the classes. In 2007, Hi-Lance began to enter their students for the NPC exams (National Primary School Exams) and they have consistently achieved outstanding results. The highest pass mark for the school has continued to rise each year and is now just a few marks below the highest national pass mark.

Other facts • Number of Students = 200 (this is subject to change in the new school year in September 2010). • Number of Teachers = 9 • Number of Nannies = 1 • Number of Classes = 9

MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE

F

amilies for Children is one of the longest established and most well respected fostering agencies in the country. We have been operating successfully for over twenty years and as one of the very first independent agencies understand how crucial it is to provide first class support to carers if they are to offer safe, caring and successful placements for children and young people. The agency was set up by a small group of foster carers, social workers and teachers who wanted to make a positive and lasting difference. The original founders still play key roles in the organisation, ensuring the highest standards of support, care and opportunity for children, young people, foster carers and staff. We remain a truly independent agency which means that best outcomes for children, a top quality service for carers and careful matching remain our priorities. We have local centres throughout Sussex, Surrey, London and Hampshire. These are staffed by experienced, skilled and friendly people who have been carefully recruited and trained to work alongside carers to ensure an ‘outstanding’ service. In addition to the unique

personal and emotional rewards that fostering brings, Families for Children will provide you with: • First class training before you start fostering and comprehensive training and development opportunities throughout your career - including the option of NVQ level 3 Caring for Children and Young People.

Rapper Fat Joe speaks on giving back and the importance of voting

J

oseph Cartagena also known as rapper Fat Joe has long been at the forefront of the US rap scene – with hit records and several collaborations under his belt – the Bronx born rapper returned this year with his highly anticipated ninth album (J.O.S.E 2) Jealous Ones Still Envy. Having sold over 2.5 million albums, when he’s not crafting chart topping hits or discovering hot new artists, Fat Joe the entertainer also doubles as Joseph the husband, father and charity spokesperson. His family bonds have influenced his philanthropic efforts to better American youths and his fan base. In 2004, Fat Joe became a strong advocate for Voto Latino, an organisation cofounded by Latino actress Rosario Dawson to encour-

I got to watch my kids when my wife has a doctor’s appointment – you know like any other parent and family. not only is this line more affordable to parents, but also even kids can afford to buy the sneakers themselves for only $30. And everyone knows that Joey ain’t gone

What are your opinions on the current hip-hop scene and what direction do think it is going in? I think hip hop is headed in a great direction, for New York especially, because all kinds of new rappers are dropping albums all the time. As long as it doesn’t get too stupid I love all hip hop. I mean the prime time of hip hop from early 90’s and late 80’s is my heart, but I really do love all hip hop.

s the year draws towards its end, for many of us our thoughts start to turn to Christmas and regardless of whether or not we are religious, its often planning for the family gatherings and celebrations that become the focus of the forthcoming month. It’s often the time when special efforts are made to catch up with family members and other people in our social networks who we may not have seen for some time. Last month, The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) took the lead in setting the agenda for National Adoption Week, which aims to highlight the need for more people to come forward to adopt. This years theme aimed to make people aware that the children who wait longest tend to be older children, children with disabilities, brothers and sisters, and children from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Most alarming is the fact that across the nation it is the black and mixed-race children who are over-represented in the group of those who wait. Ealing Council’s ‘Positive Futures’ campaign asks “Can you turn a negative into a positive?” and points out “that it’s not all about the biology, it’s about the chemistry between you and your child”. The event which took place in the Docklands on November 23rd, aimed to give people some insight into the adoption process, dispel some of the myths which often prevent people from coming forward, such as concerns about finance, marital status and housing. COMEDY

KEVIN J The 21-year-old comedy newcomer taking the scene by storm. Words: Michelle Adabra

Within the space of a year, newcomer Kevin J has quickly become one of the capital’s most talked about comedians. Under the wings of comedy favourites Kojo and Eddie Kadi, the 21-yearold comedian had his first shot on stage at Kojo’s legendary Comedy Club at Corks and he hasn’t looked back since. Now with his own comedy night I love Comedy taking off and a nomination for the Black Tie Comedy Awards for Best Newcomer under his belt, the north Londoner is destined for big things! Read on. How did you get into comedy? A year and a half ago I went to Kojo’s comedy club and after watching it I approached Kojo and asked him how would I be able to make that step onto the stage and he told me that I needed to prepare five jokes, put them together and come back. So two months later I was able to come back, get on the stage and perform for five minutes. I hadn’t told anyone, no knew I just practiced and practiced! Do you get nervous before you perform? Yeah I was very nervous the first time I performed at Kojo’s club, before this I had never done anything in performance

arts; I never did drama or anything like that. I still get nervous now but it’s more like nervous energy; it’s more like excitement now. When I’m on stage it feels like this is where I belong. Were you naturally funny as a child? Yeah I’ve always been like the class clown and was always known as the joker but being a joker is a very big difference from being a comedian. What inspires your jokes? It sounds quite typical but life really. I grew up in a very multi cultural area with Turkish people, Caribbean’s, Africans – that’s why I’m pretty good with my Nigerian accent!

‘G

oing to one of my African friend’s house in the morning; his mum put pounded yam on the table now that’s a funny situation, that’s what inspires jokes!’ Part of what makes your act so funny is the fact that you’re a white guy doing very Afro Caribbean jokes – how did that come about? I’ve got friends from all over the place, I was literally the only white kid in my class (laughs) and the funny situations going to a friend’s house have just made for good jokes. Like going to one of my African friends house in the morning and his mum put pounded yam on the

table – that’s a funny situation! You have this white guy getting integrated into different cultures and that’s what inspires my jokes. Did you have any comedy icons growing up? No! I didn’t like comedy I thought it was boring, I hated it (laughs). My dad used to watch stand up comedy and I couldn’t stand it. I would be like, ‘where’s the special effects, why is no one getting killed?’ Even now I don’t really like watching other comedians, I don’t know why that is but I love doing it. You’ve been nominated for Best Newcomer at The Black Tie Comedy Awards – how did you feel when you heard about the nomination? I feel very honoured; I’m

nominated next to people who have been doing comedy for three or four years. It was a shock and I was very pleasantly surprised and to be recognised on the black comedy circuit - which is what I work predominantly – is a real honour. Do you solely enjoy making people laugh? Yes definitely, that for me now is my sole purpose in life. I want to make people laugh, if you can make them forget their worries and make them smile – it’s a beautiful thing.

clubs THEATRE THEATRE REVIEW:

Hairspray the Musical, Shaftesbury Theatre

Words: Sophia A Jackson, November 2009

H

airspray the Musical has had a cast make over and now the show includes comedian, broadcaster, writer and actor, Phill Jupitus, who plays Tracy Turnblad’s lovable mum, Edna Turnblad. Jupitus is joined by pop icon, Belinda Carlisle playing the villainous white supremacist Velma Von Tussle and television/radio star and singer, Sharon D Clarke stars as Motormouth Mabel, celebrity DJ. Set in 1962 Baltimore, USA, Hairspray charts the overnight success of teen sweetie, Tracy Turnblad (Chlöe Hart) who has aspirations of becoming a dancer. So much so, she bunks off school to audition for The Corny Collins Show. This is a life-changing decision and with the help of the cool negro kids who teach her a few dance moves and her supportive family - she goes from geek to chic. It’s a time when race music (African-American genres including blues, jazz and gospel) and racism go hand in hand and white parents are discouraging their children from any form of appreciation of music made by black folk. But times are a changing and having bagged the part, Tracy throws her heart and soul into making ‘The Corny Collins Show’ integrated, exclaiming ‘I wish every day could be Negro Day’. From the costume to the

set design, Hairspray has got it going on. The show is brimming with vibrant colours and energy that it’s no wonder it just keeps cleaning up awards – the show is an absolute gem. Based on the John Waters film that was originally made in 1988 and then remade in 2007, the show opened in London in 2007 and has already bagged 28 major awards. This is a

show for girls, for boys, for friends and for family. Favourite song: You Can’t Stop the Beat Favourite character: Penny Pingleton Favourite scene: Phill Jupitus and Tony Timberlake (Mr and Mrs Turnblad) serenading each other and trying to keep their composure whilst in hysterics. As Seaweed (Adrian Hansel) says, ‘You’ve got

to use the blues to lose the blues’ and Hairspray has got ‘feel good’ written all over it. My only gripe is that I would have liked to see more diversity in the audience – it’s a show about integration after segregation after all. • Courtesy of Afridiziak Theatre News www. afridiziak.com

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof interview with Adrian Lester

Words: Sophia A Jackson

A

fridiziak Theatre News editor/founder, Sophia Jackson, was over-excited when she got an exclusive opportunity to join the cast and crew on the first day of rehearsals for the West End’s most hotly anticipated show of 2009, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The first interview is with Adrian Lester, who tells us why he’s nervous and that the issue of diversity in theatre is a lot better now than when it was when he started out 20 years ago. Afridiziak Theatre News: So, how excited are you about starring in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – the most hotly anticipated West End show of the year? Adrian Lester: (Laughs) Very excited. ATN: Are you sleeping? AL: I’m managing to a bit. I’ve just finished filming Hustle (BBC television show) so I’ve just ran home, unpacked, introduced myself to the girls and come out to do this. It’s very exciting but I’m quite nervous about it as well. It’s not going to be an easy job to pull off this character and to make it work. At the end of the day it’s about the play and you’ve got to get

it right. ATN: Do you think it was risky to make the cast all black and how do you think it will translate over here, having been a phenomenal success on Broadway? Do

(40) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

you think we can replicate that in the West End? AL: I think it will do really well over here. I think we need to look at the play from a different perspective from the one that we’re used to and think of another

way to reinvent a classic play. ATN: What’s it like being involved with such an amazing cast and production that’s got such a buzz around it? AL: I go back to being

THEATRE

nervous and excited. I think it will all pay off and it will be really good. I can’t wait to get my teeth into Brick, the character I play and messing around with that text. ATN: Tell me about the character you play, Brick. AL: Brick’s different as he’s unlike any lead role ever written before him. He’s someone who does not wish to engage in finding out what could make him happy. He wants to hide from it all. He wants to not feel. He’s deeply, deeply hurt and deeply upset and can be vicious and so channels that into the alcohol in a very calm studied way. He’s not like a falling down drunk. He gets drunk in order to be quiet. Brilliant. Amazing role. And he’s unique in terms of that. ATN: Do you think the colour blind casting is something that will inspire producers in the UK? AL: I don’t think it’s colour blind casting. It’s actually colour specific. What it of-

fers the audience is a way into that kind of family and universal themes like this are not about colour. It’s about love and pain, regret and lies. So, because it’s a classic and is written about something that is unspoken about – that we can’t find words for, the characters can be played by anybody. It’s like Richard III being played by a woman or black man. These things can be done because the play allows that. The production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that goes on in Nigeria is not going to be played by Caucasians but the play

will survive because it’s not about that. ATN: I’m at the theatre at least once a week, and it’s often the same faces. Do you think we will get more diverse audiences coming to the West End because it’s an all black cast? AL: Everything changes with time. When I started 20 years ago, it was a very, very, very, very different picture. They were all white. I left drama school when Apartheid was still strong and this country was just turning a blind eye to it. It was a really, really different world that I was working in. When I look around now, my God things have changed so much and I’ve been working through that period of change. So no matter how people maybe negative about prospects and all that – the world is changing. How fast it’s changing, I will argue with you but the fact of the matter is that it is changing and I’m really grateful for that. Productions like this and the Lion King get done and they

help to make change. What was great is that I was at the Lion King yesterday and it was the tenth anniversary party and my daughters were sat upstairs at the party chatting to the different Nilas and the Simbas who have been doing the show over the 10 years and we were all up there. They were all mixed and I just thought ‘yeh’ this is the world that I live in. When people say to me ‘oh you have to go to America as that’s where you can make it’. I say if I was totally unemployed I would take that as an option but there’s no need to run I don’t think. I was born here, raised here, a lot of blood has been spilt to make things accessible here and I will be part of making sure that carries on and I love this. • Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is

at the Novello Theatre until April, 2010.

THEATRE THE LIME THEATRE REVIEW:

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Lime rating: ★

★★★★

Words: Sophia A Jackson The most hotly anticipated west end production of the year is here, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with an all black cast – and it was worth the wait. Following a sell-out, box office record breaking run on Broadway in 2008, the producers took a leap of faith and decided to bring some of that Broadway glitz and glamour over here. And it works. It works because the dream cast are outstanding and Tennessee Williams’s play is a timeless classic with universal themes that transcend the limitations and boundaries of race. The highly successful 2008 African-American production, also directed by Debbie Allen, included Hollywood stars Terrence Howard as Brick, alongside James Earl Jones (Big Daddy), and Phylicia Rashad as Big Mama who are both in the west end production. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof centres on one dramatic evening in the lives of the dysfunctional Pollitt family who are on the brink of change. Played by the formidable James Earl Jones, it’s Big Daddy’s sixty-fifth birthday party and for some family members it’s

a day of celebrating Big Daddy’s life and for other’s it’s more about his after-life and getting their hands on his 28,000 acres of land. On top of that, there’s a strong whiff of mendacity in the air. Big Daddy’s dying of cancer and he and his wife, Big Mama, played by the fantastic Phylicia Rashad don’t know that this birthday will be his last because his family and doctor have decided to keep this from them. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer Prize winning play (1955) is superbly directed by Debbie Allen who is supported by a stellar cast. Big Daddy’s son, Brick, is played by Adrian Lester. Brick is a character shrouded with

(42) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

sexual ambivalence and is riddled with guilt because of the death of his beloved college friend Skipper which causes him to hit the bottle. He is married to Maggie, the Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, played by Sanaa Lathan is desperate for her husband’s attention, affection, and for a baby. The troubled wife battles against her husband’s alcoholism and although she loves him – she hates the fact the she finds him irresistible and that the drink addiction has made him more attractive instead of less so. Their constant bickering and squabbles provides much of the play’s humour as they war against each other with Maggie’s wit and Brick’s dry sarcasm. Adrian Lester gives an outstanding portrayal as Brick, an unhappily married man living in denial and drowning his sorrows and disgust with his own internal battle with the true nature of his friendship with Skipper. During a muchneeded heart to heart with his dad, the truth behind

his alcoholism is revealed in a poignant and touching scene between James Earl Jones and Adrian Lester where their performance is both riveting and memorable. Sanaa Lathan’s Maggie is sexy, seductive and fiery but just so hopeful in a marriage that is clearly hopeless. The cattiness between Maggie and Mae and her brood adds light relief amongst some of the heavy duty emotional tensions that Williams’s play exudes. Mae is played by Nina Sosanya who sucks her teeth into this role and truly shines on stage. This two hours and 45 minute production glides by leaving the audience pondering their own family values, truths and lies. Don’t be left out in the cold this season and get your tickets early to see this remarkable all black cast of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof which tops my list of great plays of 2009. • Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is at the Novello Theatre until April, 2010.

THEATRE THE LIME THEATRE REVIEW:

Angie Le Mar’s Do You Know Where Your Daughter Is?

Words: Davelyn Thompson, November 2009 Lime rating:

★★★ ★★

Acclaimed playwright, Angie Le Mar once again had audience members laughing out loud and jumping in their seats at the premier of her recent play. ‘Do You Know Where Your Daughter Is?’ is a faced paced piece, overflowing with various social issues, such as sex, lies, domestic violence and much more; all in the short space of 90 minutes. Performed at the Albany Theatre in Deptford, the play follows the life of its protagonist Carla played by Sophia Sinclair, and her volatile relationship with her mother. At 17-years-old, the audience wit-

ness Carla desperately trying to affirm her position as a woman within society. Tired and almost suffocated by her busy mother, Carla rebels due to peer pressure and, the play follows her journey towards ‘adulthood’ along with her four friends. The cast, which comprises of six promising young actors, are fantastic. Feisty character Mikki who is played by Naomi J Lewis has a captivating presence on stage, and her dialogue with Carla about the constant abuse that she suffers at the hands of another one of her mother’s boyfriends, is endearing. But the most momentous scene during the whole play is when Carla’s mother (Orlessa Altass) flies across the bed of the plays

Casanova, Duwane, played by Aaron Fontaine, with a lioness-like rage due to him raping her daughter and getting her pregnant. The scenes in the play are short and snappy, and there is never a dull moment on stage; from the humorous conversations taking place in the college common room, to the spine chilling hospital scene. The play makes you comment on the importance of parental responsibility and the sad reality that we are currently living in a society that consist of young girls who believe that short skirts and sex constitute to true womanhood.

Michael Jackson: The Official Exhibition will include items that have never been seen up close by the public. Michael Jackson’s estate has opened up his extensive archives from his homes, Neverland Ranch, concert collections and video vault to present more than 250 items, including awards, clothing items and a wide range of personal belongings. These include an original Jackson 5 contract, personally commissioned portraits, the largest publicly displayed collection of his iconic concert and video costumes, his personal Rolls Royce and the famous sequined glove.

SCREEN Lime’s Hot 2010 Precious: A Novel By Sapphire

Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. Having wowed audiences at the recent London Film Festival, Precious is one of the leading contenders for awards glory in the coming months. It’s an unrelenting and insightful film which thankfully pulls no punches and never waters down the story to make it more palatable for the viewer. Newcomer Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe takes on the title role with Mo’Nique playing her mother and both deserve the credit they are getting. Director Lee Daniels clearly enjoys confronting the expectations of audiences and provides us with another superb example of Black American cinema. Out end of Jan, 2010

JAMIE FOXX ON LAW ABIDING CITIZEN

T

ell us about working with Gerard Butler on LAW ABIDING CITIZEN? At the end of the day the film all comes down to Gerry Butler. We’re going live this movie through him. We’re going to live through his emotions. We’re going to live through his love of his daughter and his wife that he lost and also the anger that engulfs his whole being and so it’s really on him. He’s doing a great job and then we react off of him. Some of the shots are just incredible.

He told me you and him had a lot of fun boys nights out. His take on life is great he just, he embraces it and then he’s a spiritual cat as well. He went to India and got in touch with his spirituality which is great! And what about your director, F. Gary Gray? His eye is incredible. When you see the movie it looks great. Right off the bat you see it’s epic. He shoots it epic and not a lot of directors are able to do that. And his sensibility of how actors work is incredible. So the film’s got some style? The way the film looks. It just, you feel it, it’s heavy it’s deep. And the way he’s shooting you get the feeling that the city of Philadelphia is a character. Those courtrooms we’re coming in and out of- he makes them come to life.

How did you prepare for your role as a hot-shot District Attorney? I talked to DAs and I talked to defence attorneys. They have a very, very different outlook on each other. My defence attorney teams, they hate DA’s because they think that DA’s are all about what they do – putting people in jail, the system. And DA’s despise defence attorneys because they handle some of the most scummy, law breaking people in the world. It’s an interesting world. They’re gladiators, and you know, they have to fight it our every day in court. You have to have that tough skin. Was this helpful in develop-

ing your character, Nick Rice? Well, we all understand that he’s a highly competitive guy. He’s doing everything he can to get his conviction rate up to 99 – 100% and he’s moving up the career ladder, but the problem with that is when you start to take all of the emotion out of it, situation like Clyde’s (GERARD BUTLER) can happen. I spoke to the defence lawyers to find out how they felt about prosecutors and they talked about how arrogant they thought they were. I used that to develop the character, especially in the beginning of the film. When you were doing your research into the justice system did you find the film to contain any truth? Well, the thing is, the jus-

tice system is not a perfect system. It has a lot of flaws to it and it’s the best system we’ve got, but at certain points its justice just can’t be served the way we want it to be served all the time. The film plays incredibly well to audiences, people just go crazy. Do you think it’s because there are so many shocking scenes this movie? I think so and I think that’s what we need. We’ve become so sensitive and I just want to collectively kick the whole society in the balls right now with a big steel shoed shoe. I know the chances that F Gary took and to see the smiles he would have on his face and when Gerard’s character kills the guy in the cell, they were all laughing, “this is crazy!” You know its just time for that. So after working on so many films over the years, do you prefer comedies or dramas? Dramas are great but when you’ve got a great comedy there isn’t anything like it!

LEADING MAN Top Brit actor is the business! Words: Jemma Capleton

he 6ft 3 modest cockney is a far cry from the hard men which he has portrayed, such as Millwall Fred in Football Factory or Charlie in cult Brit gangster flick The Business. A late starter to the acting game Tamer has honed his craft and is set to become one of

the UK’s most loved screen personalities. Tamer turned to acting after contracting a boxing injury and hasn’t looked back ever since. A true jack of all trades - having been a boxer, nightclub owner, and restaurateur - he has since fought his way through the ranks of the film world, most recently propelling himself into the hot seat as an

executive producer of Dead Man Running. Having completed no less than 6 feature films in as many months ‘Tam’ as his friends call him took some time out to Lime with us.

What have you been up to lately? Prior to Dead Man Running, I did Clash of the Titans, Kick Ass with Matthew Vaughn and a big Fox movie called Wrong Turn 3.

So first and foremost how are you? Very well, I’m just doing a lot of press at the moment, cramming it all in.

On the film Dead Man Running you took on the role of executive producer as well as taking a featuring in the film. How did you cope with

SCREEN

the combined pressures of acting and producing? I have always coped with pressure well, due to the background I’m from but the added pressure was taking money off of life long friends, Rio Ferdinand and Mark Rowe. From the point of an executive producer, the most difficult factor was raising the finances. There are a lot of good scripts out there. We made a film about the credit crunch in the credit crunch. As an actor, I’m doing what I love, so it wasn’t difficult. The way I have dealt with it was to use it as a plus to do a better job. Making sure that these people, the investors and friends of mine were satisfied, this drove me more to try and do a better job. What was it like working with 50 cent? Unbelievable! It was such a surreal experience; you’re talking about one of the biggest rap stars on the planet. A very talented man at that, he did a great job. He was very humble and grounded; I mean he was just as

excited about working with me and Danny (Dyer) as we were to work with him. A very professional, hard working and humble guy, who just wants to hone is craft before taking on bigger roles. We sat down and had a bit of dialogue and I said “keep going and you could be the next Will Smith”. He is a very God fearing man, very clean living as far as I have seen; and very softly

spoken, I don’t want to kill his street cred, I don’t want people to think he isn’t what he is. He is the real deal. You have worked with Danny Dyer before in Football Factory and The Business. What was it like being on screen with him again? People like to see us on screen; our chemistry is great so it’s always good to be in a film with Danny. He helps me a lot and we have a good rapport. We’re best friends on screen as well as off screen. We can turn a cold classic into a Rush Hour or Bad Boys film and find another scenario.

How would you describe your acting experience so far? I’ve been very lucky in the last 10 years. I was a late starter to the industry and obviously being untrained I have found a raw ‘God given talent’ and a niche where people like to work with me. I am privileged to work with great people and keep busy. It’s a lot of hard work but you’ve got your fans and you get to premiers and travel around. You have been very busy of late, how do you plan to relax? I haven’t had a chance to. My wife and kids keep on moaning that they haven’t seen me. I have found two weeks in December to go out to L.A. to spend with the family before I have to return to filming. So what’s next for you? I’ve got a call to go to Hollywood. And then when I come back I start filming on - Bonded By Blood which is a true story about Pat Tate - which recounts the story behind the infamous Rettendon Range Rover murders of 1995.

BOOK OF ELI Denzel Washington gets down and dirty in postapocalyptic thriller “The Book of Eli,” teaming with “From Hell” directors The Hughes Brothers. Washington plays Eli, a loner who moves across America protecting a book that holds the secret to saving mankind from destruction, as bad guy Gary Oldman tries to take the book for his own gain. With dusty, gritty images and more than a handful of big guns and bigger explosions, “The Book of Eli” looks like “Mad Max” on a bigger budget, with Washington’s charisma hopefully providing a solid anchor for the film. The film is being dubbed as “a thriller that combines elements of Assault on Precinct 13 with Lord of the Flies in a story of survival. ARMORED A newbie guard for an armored truck company is coerced by his veteran coworkers to steal a truck

A PROPHET Set largely within prison walls and featuring an almost exclusively male and non-professional cast, the film details the prison career of Malik el Djebena (Rahim), a 19-year-old man of North African origin but estranged from the Muslim community. Malik soon rises up the ranks and as the story unfolds you get a prison drama which has a lot more going on than one might suspect. The title is deliberately obstructive and hints at the analogy that is at play, but even if you come out of this having only taken onboard what is on screen, it will be worth it. The Road When one post-apocalyptic movie isn’t enough, Viggo Mortensen stars in arguably one of the best films of the month. Based on the book by Cormac McCarthy.

IRL POWER ON THE SMALL SCREEN

The Soap Queens who are making waves Words: Zekra Rahman Picture credit: REX features

D

ESI divas with spicy storylines have definitely been adding some masala to our favourite TV serials. With more power-packed roles and on-screen time

than before, the ladies have been on top this year. LIME decided to pay tribute to some of the Asian soap queens who have made up for the lack of interesting roles on the small screen and the ones to keep an eye on in the year ahead.

PREEYA KALIDAS: When Preeya waltzed into Albert square with her snob like behaviour playing Syed Masood’s (Marc Elliot) love interest Amira Shah, everyone was talking about it. Everything from her singing talent to her glamorous outfits and her relationship with the Masoods have made her an interesting character to watch this year. A big Indian wedding and lots of explosive revelations about Syed’s sexuality means that the Asian family in Eastenders are going to be in the spotlight this Christmas and New years so watch out for some more brilliant performances from Preeya coming soon!

(52) Lime magazine two thousand and nine

AYESHA DHARKER: Mums and dads started tuning into Corrie when they realised the much –loved Bollywood babe Ayesha Dharker was starring in it. Her flirty character Tara Mandal, the daughter of Dev’s lover Nina, fast became a hot favourite known for stirring things up. One of her best moments was when Tara unveiled a 30-foot naked portrait of her lover Dev down the side of the Victoria Court apartments, with the word ‘liar’ covering his manhood, in an act of revenge, SHOBU KAPOOR: It’s hard to imagine that more than ten years on and people still remember Shobu as ‘Gita’ from Eastenders. She regularly had interesting storylines about her husband’s (Sanjay played by Deepak Verma) gambling, infertility and unfaithfulness. Sanjay and Gita, who ran a clothing store in the market, wern’t just the talk of the square, they regularly popped up in conversations offscreen as well. .

TV

NIKKI PATEL: Streetwise, sassy, quickwitted and intelligent, Nikki has become a hugely likable character playing the headstrong teenage daughter, Amber Kalirai, of Coronation Street’s shopkeeper Dev. Regularly having Dev wrapped around her little finger and constantly leaving him floored with comments about his relationship with girlfriend Tara, has established her as a firm favourite on the soap. Although Nikki is best known for her role in Coronation Street, some may also recognise her as Shazia from BBC drama Waterloo Road.

LENA KAUR AND SAIRA CHOUDHRY: The two sisters Leila (Lena Kaur) and Anita Roy (Saira Choudhry), added some fun to the sets of Hollyoaks with their big personalities. Their quests of self discovery, their on-screen relationship with each other and the issues they faced as Young

NINA WADIA: The brilliant acting of Nina Wadia has turned the Masood family one of the most hilarious families of the soap world. The mysteries about her past, comical story lines, on-screen chemistry with her husband Mas Masood, and off course her heavy Indian accent even earned her Best Comedy Performance and Best OnScreen Partnership with the fellow actor Nintin Ganatra at the British Soap Awards 2009.

Asians growing up in Chester connected with a new generation of soap lovers. Off-screen, Lena has done a good job of representing the double life of young Brit Asians by turning up in traditional saris at awards ceromonies to posing in a bikini for the Hollyoaks Babes Calendar 2009.

SEETA INDRANI: This sexy police officer shot to fame when she landed the role of W.P.C Datta in ITV’S popular drama The Bill. It no surprise that following this power-packed role, she went on to star in another hit soap. Seeta was cast in the role of Dr. Lily Hassan in BBC’S soap Doctors and within a short space of time, she managed to get viewers hooked to the story surrounding her on-screen love life with Heston Carter (Owen Brenman). If that was enough, Seeta was nominated for the Sexiest Female title at the British Soap Awards 2009.

SHOBNA GULATI: Some characters are just too good to keep away from the storylines. That is why when Shobna’s character Sunita Alahan, left Weatherfield after discovering her cheating exhusband Dev had fathered a number of children with different women, the door was left open for her return. Now with a sexy new image, she’s making a dramatic return to Coronation Street to turn Dev’s life into a living hell. Shobna remains one of the few actresses who also appeared in rival soap Eastenders, as Ameena Badwi, Sonia Jackson’s social worker back in 2000.

CLUBS DJ Interview with Rinse FM’s S.K Vibemaker H

ow did you become a DJ? I actually became a DJ by default. As a casual record collector, when a friend of mine named Coolie was approached to do a radio show, I was the one he knew with Hip hop and r&b. Before that I used to MC to jungle. What music do you play on your show? Hip Hop is the root to anything I play, Hip Hop is the backbone! You play a balanced mixture of US and UK artists – why do you think that is important? Well the benefit of playing lesser known UK artists next to US acts who have hundreds of thousands and often millions of pounds invested in them is basically like a subtle introduction. People have always been more inclined to US music on the whole, even though attitudes are changing. So playing UK music alongside is hugely advantageous as appose to a 100% UK show. Even though I have done 100% UK shows! You have a very popular show on Rinse FM - why do you think that is? I’m on Rinse every Wednesday 3-5pm! The best underground radio station in the UK and also more relevant and important than certain commercial radio stations! You’ve interviewed many celebrities, who has been your favourite, your worst and why? I have interviewed many artists who I don’t really view as celebrities. Off the top of my head one of my favourite interviews was with Rza (of the Wu-Tang), that guy is a teacher. The worst interview was with Guru

(formerly of Gangstarr). Who has been your sexiest interviewee thus far? NY, Sadie, Shola Ama, Tulisa and Princess Nyah! Are you ever hesitant to ask celebrities questions about their personal lives? No becasue I give every interviewee a disclaimer at the beginning of interviews. I ask them if there is anything they don’t want to talk about. You compile a weekly chart – how do you figure out what is hot at the moment? Hmmm! Well the job of a DJ

is to set trends. So if I hear it and it’s hot, It’s hot! Your podcast is also very popular – what makes a good podcast? What makes a good podcast? Many have tried and failed. I don’t want to give away too much but you can’t buy wit, humour, intelligence, fast thinking and good presenting. You’ve recently started doing shows on 1Xtra – will we be hearing more of you on there from now on? Yeah, I did 5 shows during July and August. I enjoyed it a lot. I guess they don’t ask

anyone to do these things. Who knows if I will be on there again? What makes you love your job? Well I love music first. I don’t see it as a job but there is nothing better than getting paid for something you love. What is the best way to get into the industry? Have a plan. Don’t just run in with no direction.

• You can hear SK VIBEMAKER every Wednesday, 3-5pm.

CLUBS The DJ Interview with Ministry of Sound’s LA Bomba resident DJ JOSE

Words: Michelle Adabra

H

ow long have you been dj-ing for? I’ve been doing it since 1999, I used to run a record shop. So people used to ask me to DJ at parties etc so it’s kind of how it all started for me. Have you always been a music lover? Yes I’ve always been a music lover and always around music. Many people are DJs and have other jobs outside but since I started I’ve been earning my living out of being a DJ for the last 12 years. I want everything I do to be related to music somehow. I’ve been lucky because where I come from in Venezuela is not like the UK.

sic, I like music that makes people dance. I like to move with the times, I don’t jump on every new trend but there is a side of me that likes to experiment with the music of the time.

What kind of music did you grow up listening to in Venezuela? I actually listened to a lot of House music, as a teenager I would go to a lot of house parties and at that time it was the whole Technotronic thing and later what they called Acid House. You are probably too young to remember that music!

‘I

What is your speciality? In the UK I champion Reggaeton especially but the whole Latin/African House sound is really taking off over here. Reggaeton is really big here now, in urban clubs they play Dancehall and Reggaeton and hip hop. I still love House mu-

Reggaeton is huge – who are the biggest Reggaeton stars at the moment? There are quite a few up and coming like Cosculluela – these guys are gonna take it to a whole new level, they are like r&b singers but on Reggaeton beats - the girls

have played in many places now including Hong Kong and South Africa but I like playing in Ireland, Irish people like to party.’

love them! Of course people like Daddy Yankee, Pitbull have also helped bring Reggaeton into the mainstream. You are a resident at La Bomba, why has it become such a popular night? The UK has a very mixed clubbing crowd but because of violence associated with Hip hop a lot of those types of raves became tarnished. I think La Bomba is bringing back the sexiness, a couple of years ago that is what Hip hop clubs did but now La Bomba does that. It is an urban night but we’ve taken the edge off it and have put in the sexiness! Anyone can come down it’s for everyone; just come to party and everyone will enjoy it. We play UK Funky House and Latin House, so it makes La

Bomba very unique. Where is your favourite place to play in the world? I have played in many places now including Hong Kong and South Africa but I like playing in Ireland, Irish people like to party! I’m happy playing anywhere!

FOUR STEPS TO FITNESS Exercise can help people feel better and enjoy life more, even those who think they’re too old or too out of shape. Staying physically active on a regular, permanent basis can help prevent or delay certain diseases (like some types of cancer, heart disease or diabetes) and disabilities as people grow older. Regular exercise also can improve mood and relieve depression, too. WHAT YOU CAN DO Plan on making physical activity a part of your everyday life. Do things you enjoy. Go for brisk walks. Ride a bike. Dance. And don’t stop doing physical tasks around the house and in the yard. Trim your hedges without a power tool. Climb stairs. Rake leaves. STEP ONE The first step is to get at least 30 minutes of activity that makes you breathe harder, on most or all days of the week. That’s called “endurance activity,” because it builds your stamina. That way you can keep doing the things you need to do and the things you like to do. If you can’t be active for 30 minutes all at once, get at least 10 minutes of endurance activity at a time. If you choose to do 10-minute sessions, make sure that they add up to a total of 30 minutes at the end of the day. Even a moderate level of sustained activity helps.

start an exercise program that makes sure you do the right types of activities.

One doctor describes the right level of effort this way: If you can talk without any trouble at all, your activity is probably too easy. If you can’t talk at all, it’s too hard. Studies show that endurance activities help prevent or delay many diseases that seem to come with age. In some cases, endurance activity can also improve chronic diseases or their symptoms.

Lack of use lets muscles waste away. When you have enough muscle, it can mean the difference between being able to get up from a chair by yourself and having to wait for someone to help you get up. That’s true for younger adults as well as for people age 90 and older. Very small changes in muscle size, changes that you can’t even see, can make a big difference in your being able to live and do things on your own.

STEP TWO Step two is to keep using your muscles. People lose 20% to 40% of their You can combine activities muscle — and, along with — for example, walking it, their strength — as they uphill and raking leaves age. Scientists have found build both endurance and that a major reason people some of your muscles at lose muscle is because the same time. One good reason to start an exercise program is that you will probably work muscles that you may have stopped using without even realizing it. Another is that exercise programs are likely to help you build up — not just maintain — your endurance and strength. Keeping your muscles in shape can help prevent another serious problem in older people: falls that cause broken hips or other disabilities. When the leg and hip muscles that support you are strong, you’re less likely to fall. And using your muscles may make your bones stronger, too. STEP THREE Step three is to do things to help your balance. For example, stand on one foot, then the other, without holding onto anything for support. Stand up from sitting in a chair without using your hands or arms. Every now and then, walk heel-to-toe (the toes of the foot in back should almost touch the heel of the foot in front when you walk this way). STEP FOUR Finally, step four is to stretch. Stretching won’t build your endurance or muscles, but it may help keep you limber.
