ECOTECT The 3d model that I had is a portion of Barcelona city, the 3d file was on rhino, so in order to have the file ready to use in Ecotect I had to export it as a Stereolitography file, once I had it like this, the file is ready to use.

SHADOW ANALYSIS 1. - Load the Barcelona weather file and location 2. - Go to the shadow settings and click on Display Shadows 3. - Select the specific date and time for the shadows

SHADOW RANGE 1. - Go to calculate 1. - Click on Shading and Shadows 2. - Display shadow Range Also you can change the start and the stop time of the hours in which you want to Ecotect start showing the shadows and change the step that shows the interval of time when you want that the shadows appear in this case I choose every 30 minutes. This is very useful to see the projections of the shadows during the day.


DISPLAY SHADOWS ON SELECTED OBJECTS This tool is useful when we want to see the projections of a shadow in an specific faรงade of a building or in an specific site, the steps to follow are: 1. - Select the surfaces of which you want to see the shadows 2. - Go to shadow settings 1. - Click on shaded 2. - Click on Tag Selected Objects

DISPLAY SUN PATH 1. - Go to the shadow settings 2. - Check the Daily sun path and Annual sun path 3. - Click on Display Shadows to visualize the sun path 4. - Move the image of the sun to change date and time


SUN PATH DIAGRAM The sun path diagram is useful to see the insulation in an specific date and time of the year

OVERSHADOWING PERCENTAGE This diagram is useful to see the parts that are overshadowing, and the amount of shadow that they received.

CALCULATING GROUND INSOLATION (With a grid) This process is very useful to the Barcelona Zero Emission project because it shows us the areas in which the solar radiation is stronger, hence we can know that the buildings near that areas are more to be hotter than the ones that are located in cooler areas, and in summer they might use less air conditioner that the first ones, so we can take the problematic areas and do some proposals in order to reduce the amount of solar radiation on the outside that is also affecting the inside, to have less co2 emission by the use of air conditioner for example. 1. - Go to the analysis grid path 2. - Select the surface in which you want to project the grid 3. - Click to Autofit Grid to Objects

CALCULATING INCIDENT SOLAR RADIATIONS (in a façade) There are two ways of calculate the Incident Solar radiations in a façade: Option A: Just by selecting the façade which you want to calculate this option gives you a general idea of the amount of solar radiation that is been received on the façade and the units are Wh/m2 Option B: Create a grid on the façade, this option gives you a more detailed information about the amount of solar radiation that is been received on the façade and the units are Wh.

SPATIAL VISIBILITY ANALYSIS This Analysis is very useful to see how much of a faรงade we can see trough an specific point. 1. - Select the faรงade that you want to visualize 2. - Check if the normal surfaces are pointing outside 1. - Go to display 2. - Surface Normals 3. - Go to the Analysis grid 1. - Click on display Analysis grid 2. - Autofit Grid to objects (by selecting the faรงade that you want to visualize) 4.-Now select the faรงade that you want to view through 5. - Go to Calculate 1. - Spatial Visibility Analysis 2. - Go through all the process

SPATIAL VISIBILITY ANALYSIS (Access to Views Through Selected Windows) This analysis is useful when you want to check the visibility of a window; this means who much you can see through the window. The steps to follow are the same that the previous analysis but you have to put a window in a wall and change the normal axis pointing to the inside of the room by clicking Ctrl+R


PREVAILING WINDS The Prevailing wind analysis is also very useful because we can see where the prevailing winds are and also for example, in the specific case of my area, the prevailing winds are in the most polluted area in car terms and therefore that area it’s not going to be polluted at last because the wind is going to drag the particles to some other place. 1. - Go to Calculate 1. - Select the Prevailing Winds option

AIRFLOW RATE ANALYSIS – FLOW VECTOR ANALYSIS This analysis is useful because it shows us the speed or the directions of the wind in different areas or between buildings.
