Risk tolerance may appear less bothersome in the abstract but seem quite different in reality. For example, you might initially think you wouldn’t be fazed by short-term market downturns, no matter how severe. However, when the financial markets really decline, as happened when the COVID-19 pandemic struck last March, you might find yourself being more concerned than you thought you would be.

During the midst of what appears to be a real threat to your investment portfolio, it can be difficult to anticipate a more favorable environment. Yet, while past performance can’t guarantee future results, every historical market decline has been followed by a recovery.

• Understand that the Dow isn’t your portfolio. When the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the other major market indexes such as the S&P 500 fall precipitously (or shoot up), it makes headlines. But the Dow and the S&P 500 only track the performance of large U.S. companies—and while their performance may be an indication of the U.S. economy, they aren’t going to track the results of your portfolio, which should ideally include a personalized mix of large-company stocks, smallcompany stocks, international stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments.

Because market fluctuations are a normal part of investing, here are some additional suggestions that may help you focus on your long-term strategy.

we may buy when we feel good (when the markets are up) and sell when we feel badly (when markets are down). Your heart and your emotions may drive your financial goals—creating a comfortable retirement, sending your kids to college or leaving a legacy for your family—but when you invest for these goals, you should use your head.

• Look past the immediate event. While the market’s pandemic-driven fall was sudden, its recovery was also fairly quick. Eight months after its March meltdown, the market had regained all the lost ground and reached a new record high.

Your risk tolerance is a key part of your investment strategy. But by taking the steps described above, you can gain a broader understanding ofMember how risk fits into your overall picture—and a better understanding of yourself as an investor.

“2020 fulfilled my dream job of being a stay-at-home dad. It was the most amazing experience to spend as much time with my wife and kids. I got to catch up on over a decade of missed time.

J

ustin Dick started coming to Sandpoint from Denver when he was a boy, when they’d eat at Ivano’s and Thai Bangkok and work out at the Sandpoint West Athletic Club. As a grown man, he and his wife started asking the same question most of us did: “How do I move here?” He and his wife quit their jobs and moved to Sandpoint in 2006. Today, you will often find Justin at one of his two restaurants: Trinity at City Beach or Jalapenos, spending time with his family, or serving the community through Rotary or as president of the Bonner General Health Foundation Board. Q. How did you get into the restaurant industry? A. My mother’s side of the family owned a restaurant in a three-story motel in a tiny little farming community of Canistota, South Dakota, population 100. I had so many great times there. The customers and staff used to chase me around and buy me comics and candy. When my folks moved up to Sandpoint, it was the perfect opportunity to open a restaurant of her own, and my mother started Cafe Trinity on 1st Street next to Starbucks and Ground Zero skate and snowboard shop. She quickly went from one employee to 30 in a matter of months, which sparked the conversation of my wife Shaunavee and I moving to Sandpoint. I bought the restaurant in 2009 and was able to move it to the Edgewater Best Western, as we never had enough space at the 1st Street location. We’re going on 12 years in this location. Q. As part of the leadership for the Bonner General Health Foundation, how are you passionate about its role in our community? A. I am the president of the Bonner General Health Foundation Board as of January 1, 2021, and have been a foundation trustee for the past four years.

Bonner General Health has been so influential in my family’s lives that I’m honored to be a small part of giving back to our hometown hospital. Both our children were born there, several trips to the ER over the years, and the diagnosis of my son’s Type 1 Diabetes. BGH has always been there for us, but more importantly, for this community. A rural hospital is a cornerstone of every small community, and we are blessed to have such wonderful access to Bonner General Health. Q. What is most rewarding about being a restaurateur here in Sandpoint? A. Hanging out with the customers and the staff are among the top reasons I love this work. I’m a social butterfly, and especially now with COVID, it’s about the only time I get human interaction outside of my family. You have to be an owneroperator. Your customers expect to see you. The dream of hiring someone to run the place while you’re off galavanting around collecting cash went out the window my first month of the business. And I love it like that! Q. For you, what is the most important takeaway and/or goal when it comes to work, family and life? A. The world will go on without you and your business. And that’s fine. I can always find another job. What matters most are your family and the wonderful friends and relationships you have forged. I long dearly to go back to hanging out with some of my favorite friends. My circle has always been small, so it really makes me sad to have had so little personal contact with them.

Family wise, 2020 fulfilled my dream job of being a stay-at-home dad. It was the most amazing experience to spend as much time with my wife and kids. I got to catch up on over a decade of missed time. My challenge for the rest of my life will be how to better balance my family as the main priority from my work and nonprofit lives. Q. What is most important to you outside of work, and what do you enjoy doing with your free time? A. Family first and everything else second. Now, with that said, my family gets to deal with all the weird stuff I do in my free time! I have been collecting sneakers since I got my first pair of Fire Red Jordan 4s in 1989 for Christmas. I have curated a collection of all of my favorites from 1989 to present that includes upwards of 300 pairs. As of a year or two ago, I obtained the last of my grail pairs and have basically finished my collection. I still track down two to three pairs per month, but I have finally come to the point where I don’t feel incomplete without them. It’s nostalgic for me. It reminds me of great times playing basketball and football, my elementary through college career, and many good times I had while wearing them. I’m an avid runner as of the last five years thanks to my wife Shaunavee, who ran the New York, Chicago and Boston marathons and many other races across the U.S. I never thought in a million years I would run for fun, but I love it. It’s an amazing feeling that doesn’t often get replicated.

very year as February settles firmly around us and we wait for yet another two or three months of winter to end, it’s not unusual to start feeling the affects of the cold and grey that surround us. The holidays are over, the thrill of the first snow has long passed, and our skin longs for some warmth and the vitamin D of the summer months. Though it may sound funny, the “winter blues” is a condition that affects many adults in the U.S., especially those in northern climates. And given that here in Sandpoint we’re just an hour or so from the Canadian border, the seasonal effects are real. Seasonal affective disorder is a mood disorder subset that explains symptoms of depression during certain times of the year, particularly winter. And while only around 6 percent of Americans suffer from SAD, many more experience some version of the winter blues. But despite the cold and grey, there are several ways we can help fight off the doldrums and beat the winter blues. Particularly in this beautiful outdoor paradise we call home, there is much opportunity to lift our spirits, even if the temperatures remain freezing. Getting outside, pursuing a hobby, connecting with friends and family, and incorporating a healthy lifestyle can all help keep our spirits high and our mental health in check. Get outside! This one’s not just coming from us. Studies have shown that even a limited amount of exercise each day can help boost spirits and prevent depression. A study from Harvard Health explains that low-intensity exercise sustained over time helps release neurotrophic proteins, or growth factors, that spur the growth of nerve cells and improve brain functions. Exercise supports growth of cells in the hippocampus—the area of the brain responsible for regulating mood—which in turn makes you happier. Just 15 minutes a day of high-intensity exercise like running, or an hour of low-intensity exercise like walking or household chores can have a significant effect on your mood. Plus, exercise can help you sleep better, which in turn affects your mood and productivity. But while just getting off the couch can help, getting outside is even better. It may be cold, but lucky for us Sandpoint is made for outdoor activity all winter long, and opportunities abound. Bundle up and hit the slopes, the trails or backcountry for some fresh air that will make you feel so much better. “Being able to sneak in a snowshoe or a ski before work, or go up and take a few laps on a powder day before work, makes Sandpoint so special,” says Jenny Curtos of Outdoor Experience downtown. “Having that accessibility is definitely what keeps me going throughout the winter.” If you don’t have a ski pass to Schweitzer but still want to enjoy some winter sports, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are a Go Sandpoint Magazine

15

great way to get outside. Pine Street Woods and multiple trails throughout the community provide plenty of space to explore, and you can even rent gear from places like Outdoor Experience for the day. A full rental kit for either snowshoeing or cross-country skiing is only $25 for 24 hours, and Pine Street Woods offers rentals and a variety of programs for experienced skiers or beginners. “Snowshoeing is a great place to start,” adds Curtos. “You can hike in the winter too, but sometimes the trails can be icy or snowy, and snowshoes are a great all-encompassing way to be prepared for those situations.” After some trial runs with rental gear, if you decide you love it, entry-level snowshoes are fairly affordable at around $150 for a set. It might just be a new hobby you take up year after year. Speaking of hobbies … Discover your own hobby! In summertime it’s easy to keep busy out on the water and enjoying all of the warmweather activities that abound, but if you’re not an avid skier or snowboarder, there are other things to keep you busy during the winter months. Whether it’s painting, writing, snowshoeing or collecting music, a hobby is a great way to stay content and busy during the colder months, which seem to drag on this time of year. You may already have a hobby or activity you gravitate toward. If so, great! Take the extra time you have in the day to explore those even more. But if you don’t have a hobby, this could be the perfect time to find one! Maybe you’ve been wanting to learn an instrument, or you’d like to start reading more—whatever it may be, your mind, mood and family will thank you. Find ways to connect. During the winter it’s easy to snuggle up and stay cocooned inside by yourself, but even more so this year because of COVID, it’s often easy to feel disconnected from others. Connection is vital for your mental health and happiness, even during a health crisis. There are many opportunities to connect while respecting others’ and your own health, so make a point to find ways that work for you. If going out for lunch, dinner or a coffee isn’t an option for you, pick up the phone and call your friends and family, or schedule a Zoom or Facetime drink date to catch up. Nonprofits and other organizations that help those in need are still out helping people in whatever ways they can, and they need volunteers now more than ever. Take some extra time in your week or month to volunteer. You’ll feel better and have an opportunity to give back to the community. Volunteering helps create a sense of purpose and reminds us of the many blessings we have, putting things in perspective. As it turns out, helping others helps us too by reducing feelings of depression or loneliness. As the saying goes, “We cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time.” Change your lifestyle. Our surroundings, what we eat and how we spend our time all have a huge impact on our mental health and mood. January, February and March are wellknown for their lack of sunshine in these parts, and the loss does have an effect on our mood. 16

Those who know swear by their vitamin D during the winter, and taking supplements is one way to replenish our system and keep our vitamin D levels high and happy when the sun isn’t shining. Another option is to invest in a sun lamp. Just 30 minutes a day by one can help you feel happier and healthier—just like some time in the sun would. But beyond supplements and vitamin D, what we put in our body has just as much impact on our mood and outlook as how we spend our day. Too much sugar or refined carbohydrates may make us feel good in the moment, but long term they don’t support sustained health and energy. Just like it’s important to get outside and exercise every day, getting the right amount of nutrients, drinking plenty of water (even if it’s herbal tea—cold water isn’t always the most cravable in the winter) and listening to your body’s needs are important steps to maintaining a healthy outlook and perspective. Finally, maintaining a routine and building activities into your day will help you feel productive and in control. It might sound nice to sleep in extra or skip that walk, but routine can help you feel in control of your situation, which actually reduces mood swings and depression. So if the winter blues have you down, don’t give in. Grab a friend, head outdoors, and fill your days with healthy activities, people and purpose that will keep you feeling upbeat, happy and full of life until the sun rolls around, the ice melts, and we can once again go back to weekends on the lake.

Sandpoint Gets Presidential

I

n summer of 1888, Theadore “Teddy” Roosevelt wasn’t yet President of the United States when he arrived in Sandpoint on the Northern Pacific railroad. According to the Hawkins’ family story, as told to Bob Gunter by Dale Selle, Roosevelt traveled to Idaho from his ranch in the Dakota Territory for a caribou hunting trip in the Selkirk Mountains. While waiting on horses and guides, the party ventured into the town of Pend d’Oreille (later to become Sandpoint). After a night out dining and drinking, Roosevelt ended up in the only available room in town: Winfield Scott Monfort’s shack, which the lodging house owner rented out in Monfort’s absence. At midnight, Roosevelt was awakened by a returned and surprised Monfort fresh from the bars and ready to tuck in for the night—and not expecting a guest. Whatever the resulting argument, record has it Roosevelt ended up with the bunk. Thirteen years later, he would become the 26th president of the United States.

REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Right now, the market is still in favor of Sellers and prices continue to rise. Good news for Buyers - the new year has brought more properties for sale and mortgage interest rates are historically low. Is now a good time to buy or sell? I always say when the time is right for you, the time is right. Buyers be ready. Approach your home search with proof of your purchasing ability and understand you may need to adjust your expectations. Sellers, you presently have the advantage of less competition. Price your home or land accordingly and know your next step. Rely on professionals who are focused on your area for advice. One thing is certain - our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same. God, Family and Relationships.

Contact Jackie Suarez, your local expert for help with your real estate needs. What Jackie’s clients are saying “She’s a very warm friendly realtor who listens and always follows through on resolving issues or answering our specific quessons. I have recommended her to friends and they too have been very pleased with her advice and work ethic.” Cat B., Sandpoint “We have been working with Jackie for a few years and are extremely happy with her determinason in finding our perfect home. We will always recommend Jackie to our friends and family.” Tracy & Saundra "Jackie outshined other potensal brokers with her in depth proposals and market research. AAenson to detail and knowledge of the area was key. Literally no complaints. She was helpful in other areas as well--referrals to professionals in other sectors (banking, mortgages, accounsng, etc.). We were told that she would treat us like her only client...and it truly felt that way. Exceeded all expectasons despite the fact that the referral to her set the bar very high. We can't imagine selling this house with anyone other than Jackie. We are very appreciasve to have been introduced to her and recommend her to anyone in the area.” Chris H. and Family, Sandpoint, ID “ Thank you so much for helping me through this process, you were awesome to work with. Look forward to going through this process again some day.” Kurt C., Priest River ID
