KIT KUHN | Mayor

A Welcome From The Mayor

A “THIS CITY IS THE PLACE I MET MY WIFE, WHO WAS BORN HERE, IT’S WHERE WE RAISED OUR TWO CHILDREN, AND IT’S WHERE I CHOSE TO LOCATE MY BUSINESS.” 4

GigHarborGuide.com

s many people know, before becoming mayor, I was the owner, manufacturer and entrepreneur behind a successful jewelry shop for 29 years here in Gig Harbor. We were honored to provide jewelry for three generations of customers. I like to think I developed a specific skill for finding hidden gems. The greatest gem I found was Gig Harbor. This city is the place I met my wife, who was born here, it’s where we raised our two children, and it’s where I chose to locate my business. I grew up in Colorado, where I developed a love of nature and was lucky to live in many picture-perfect destinations, from Depoe Bay in Oregon to Northern California, and even a few years in Sweden. But none of those destinations impressed me as much as Gig Harbor—I knew I’d found the place I wanted to call home. This year, it didn’t matter where you were in the world—even the cities with the most beauty and charm weren’t immune from the impacts of COVID-19; they’ve all been affected and will be remarkably different than in the past. We’ve shuttered businesses or worked from

home, we’ve been cooped up and followed stay-at-home orders to protect the health of our communities, and our perspectives on travel have changed—we’re more cautious, and further-flung trips may not make as much sense for the remainder of 2020, and perhaps even into 2021. Our community has continued to impress me during this time with the support we’ve all shown to each other and our local businesses, and how we’ve bonded with each other and worked together to weather this storm. We have a great community which encompasses all of the greater Gig Harbor area. As we stay closer to home, the city of Gig Harbor welcomes exploration—we invite you to come join us, whether by land, by air or by sea. Named one of Smithsonian Magazine’s top five small towns for culture, heritage and charm, we hope you join us in discovering Gig Harbor’s hidden gems. Our history centers around the working waterfront, and there are fun ways to explore our history while enjoying pursuits on the

water, from crafting a boat of your own with the Eddon Boat Shop or Gig Harbor Boat Works, to renting a paddleboard for a peaceful, solitary exploration, or packing up a dinner party on an electric boat, all in the shadow of Mount Rainier.

Experiencing our city goes beyond just our postcard-perfect waterfront. Despite the official city limits being only six square miles, there are 21 unique parks to enjoy, eight miles of trails to see a different side of the city by foot or bicycle, and three commerce districts: the West Side, Uptown and the Olympic Towne Center. Uptown features an indoor/outdoor setting for more than 30 shops and restaurants and an IMAX cinema, where the Gig Harbor Film Festival hosts film-centered events throughout the year. On the West Side, you’ll find duckpin bowling, laser tag and farmto-table dining all live under one roof, and Gig Harbor North is where most of the must-have big stores are located. We also encourage you to explore the communities just outside the city limits: Cromwell, Arletta, Artondale, Fox Island and others.

There’s plenty to do in Gig Harbor throughout the year. In the summer, the city is host to festivals, an arts fair, a farmers’ market, and free concerts and movies at Skansie Park. In this guide, we list events which were current as of publication. We’ll have them updated as things change in our digital edition, located at GigHarborGuide.com. When there’s a nip in the air, Gig Harbor is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most cozy and romantic waterfront destinations. You can settle into a fine dining experience with the harbor mist in the background, or take a sweet tour of the best bakeries in town. Stop into a coffee shop and listen to some live music, explore downtown’s art galleries, or take a self-guided tour of downtown’s independent breweries and distilleries. In the fall, harvest time brings out some incredible farm experiences to view first-hand.

Whether you arrive by land or by sea, we’re looking forward to having you. Whether you float, paddle, dine, shop or play, you’ll make some fantastic memories here. I look forward to seeing you around town and encourage you to stop by City Hall and say “hi.”

About the City WELCOME TO SCENIC, CHARMING GIG HARBOR

A

close-knit and friendly community set along one of the most picture-perfect backdrops imaginable, Gig Harbor is the quintessential Pacific Northwest small town. Deep blue water shimmers in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Rainier, while sailboats and fishing trawlers gently rock with the tide. Explore waterfront fine dining, independent art galleries, or rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to get out on the water. The city has become a brewing and distilling magnet, featuring well-known tasting rooms located downtown from 7Seas Brewery to Heritage Distilling. Enjoy local libations, stunning views and a boat-up arrival option at the Tides Tavern, a local favorite—and ranked as a top seafood destination by Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, Coastal Living and others.

Back on land, explore the city through self-guided walking tours, visit the town’s three waterfront museums, and drop into an independent art gallery or boutique to do a bit of shopping. Plan a hike on one of numerous trails offered at city parks or embark on a number of self-guided walking tours for in-depth insights to the city’s history. Active pursuits take center billing in Gig Harbor, with outdoor and indoor options. Hit the greens at the Gig Harbor Golf Club, Madrona Links or Canterwood Golf & Country Club, or explore indoor options with Ocean5’s laser challenge, duckpin bowling and arcade games. Whatever your interest, Gig Harbor welcomes you for an adventure you’re sure to remember.

There are some very well-maintained trails across the region that bring you through many of the most interesting and beautiful stretches of the city. And if golf is your thing, be sure to check out some of the fantastic local courses. The Cushman Trail is the most popular in Gig Harbor. It’s been continually expanding and now encompasses over 6 miles of paved pathway. The trail is 16 feet wide and accommodates bikers as well as leisurely foot traffic. The fact that the majority of the trail is ADA compliant is a great bonus, as those who might have trouble getting around can also utilize the trail. If you begin your journey at the southern end, located at 14th Street, you will soon find yourself amongst beautiful shrubbery and wetlands where birds chirp and the occasional deer crosses your path. This is also the flattest portion of the trail. The Grandview Trailhead is roughly the midpoint of the trail and very close to downtown. If you head north from here you will encounter more hills with grades as steep as 10 percent. There are restrooms and drinking fountains at several locations. Recent construction also connects the Cushman Trail with Tacoma‘s Scott

Waterfront Parks GIG HARBOR’S TOP SPOTS TO RELAX, PLAY AND ENJOY THE VIEW

T

he Maritime City, located on Puget Sound’s Gig Harbor bay, is as picturesque as it is steeped in fishing history. Covering just over six square miles, the area boasts a population of around 10,500 and is home to a collection of beautiful parks. Explore the picturesque waterfront parks that dot the shores of the harbor, or venture inland for some exploring amidst the woods and trails. Breathtaking views are found at each park location, and Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound can be viewed from several vantage points. City parks are open from dawn to dusk, and several allow dogs on or off leash.

>> SUNRISE BEACH PARK Located on Sunrise Beach Drive, the park offers 82 acres of trails and shoreline access. Swimming and fishing are allowed, and guests can enjoy incredible views of the Puget Sound, Vashon Island and Mount Rainier, as well as the beautiful shoreline on the Colvos Passage. Picnic tables are available for day use, and dogs are allowed throughout the park on a leash.

>> NARROWS PARK Thirty-five acres off Lucille Parkway boast a particularly undiscovered and off-the-beaten-path park that offers a relaxed place to picnic and explore. The 1,315 feet of sandy-rock beach provides a picturesque setting to explore the shoreline, with views of the Narrows Bridge and Tacoma. Dogs are allowed in the park on a leash, and a non-motorized boat launch, picnic tables, telescopes and a gazebo overlook provide some fun opportunities to make the most of the waterfront.

>> ANCICH WATERFRONT PARK A new addition to the Gig Harbor waterfront, Ancich Waterfront Park is situated on one of the last undeveloped waterfront properties along the shoreline. The public park serves to highlight the heritage and significance of commercial fishing in the area,

and provides a viewing platform, fully functional rehabilitated historic netshed and space to picnic. Art installations throughout the park celebrate the rich fishing history of the area.

>> FINHOLM VIEW CLIMB The 100-step Finholm View Climb offers multiple landings with benches to sit and admire the incredible vantage points overlooking the harbor and the marina. On a clear day you can see Mount Rainier. The climb was installed in July 1999 by the Gig Harbor Lions Club, in memory of Edward and John Finholm, who operated the Finholm Market nearby. Bring your camera to capture the amazing views, and relax for a bit at the top of the half-mile-long climb. Restroom facilities and visitor information are available at the North Harborview Drive entrance.

>> SOUNDVIEW FOREST PARK A woodland haven in the downtown waterfront area, this small new waterfront park boasts over 300 trees, many more than 100 years old, and is the product of a significant community effort to preserve the woodland forest where herons nest. Located on the corner of Soundview and Harborview Drive, the park offers trails, a picnic table and dog-friendly amenities.

>> MCCORMICK FOREST PARK While situated in the interior of Gig Harbor instead of along the waterfront, McCormick Forest Park offers a paradise for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Over 4 miles of trail on 122 acres offer lots of opportunity and include views of McCormick Creek. Dogs are allowed on a leash, and the McCormick Dog Park is located nearby. Just down the way off Bujacich Road is the Rotary Bark Park, which offers trails where you can take your dog off leash and enjoy the abundant wildlife and serene forest. You’re just a short drive from the harbor, and can head down to the waterfront after your exploring.

Epic Water Experiences CASCADIA MARINE TRAIL PROVIDES EPIC EXPERIENCE ON PUGET SOUND

I

t’s just a short drive from Purdy to Gig Harbor‘s Ancich Waterfront Park on the harbor, but an alternative route along a portion of the Cascadia Marine Trail offers an epic, roughly 22-mile kayak paddle that links some of the area‘s finest parks. “This stretch brings a sense of serenity to those who enjoy being one with nature. From the beauty of communing with the sea life in our area to listening to the sounds of the waves on our shores, you really won’t find anything quite so tranquil than this water trail,” says Chuck Cuzzetto, spokesman for the Peninsula Metropolitan Parks District. “You may even spot one of the many Great Blue Herons or catch a glimpse of the Bald Eagles nesting in our parks. If paddlers are really lucky, the visiting whales might make an appearance and raise a fin to say ‘hi!’” The Cascadia Marine Trail is a 140-mile saltwater trail on the Puget Sound that links the capital of Olympia to the Canadian border and includes a collection of 66 campsites and 160 day-use spots for visitors. Designated a National Recreation Trail and one of 16 National Millennium Trails, it offers paddlers incredible views and an unforgettable experience on the Sound. You can plan a multi-day overnight trip or opt for a shorter day trip throughout the Gig Harbor area. Launch your boat at Purdy and paddle out past Fox Island, under the Narrows bridges and into Gig Harbor. Along the way, stop for a visit at Kopachuck State Park, Tacoma DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve, the Fox Island Fishing Pier, and the Tacoma Narrows Park. If you’re adventurous, take the two-mile (each way) detour north of the harbor to Sunrise Beach Park, an 82acre waterfront park that offers stunning views of Puget Sound, Vashon Island and Mount Rainier. In Gig Harbor, visit Austin Estuary Park, Eddon Boat Park and Ancich Waterfront Park, a popular new park on the harbor that celebrates the area’s rich fishing history and includes picnic area, a historic netshed and public art installations. Visiting PenMet Parks via the water trail gives visitors a unique perspective of the diverse parks. “The highlights of this paddle include being able to go at your own pace along the shores and raise a paddle to a passersby, or challenge yourself through some

32

GigHarborGuide.com

of the currents running at a brisk pace,” says Cuzzetto. “One of my favorite highlights of this paddle is just taking in how beautiful the landscape is when you stop to take a rest. It’s almost surreal to see how majestic Rainier is painted against the never-ending sky.” A must-see on the paddle between Purdy and Gig Harbor includes Kopachuck State Park and Cutts Island State Park, nestled on Carr Inlet. The park offers 2 miles of trails and ample shoreline. The park is closed to camping except for one spot available for marine trail users. Visit Parks. State.WA.us/530/Kopachuck for more info. Tacoma DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve is a 3.5-acre preserve on the northwest end of Fox Island and has a sand and cobble beach and large grassy area for camping. The Fox Island Fishing Pier on the eastern tip of the island is a good spot for fishing (learn regulations and how to get a license at WDFW.WA.gov), and a grassy area is open for marine trail campers. Further along the trail, paddlers can spend the night at one of

two campsites in Narrows Park and enjoy the view of the Narrows bridges. Austin Estuary Park in the harbor was once the site of the old Austin Mill, and the park offers picnic tables, access to the Harbor History Museum and a gravel trail to Donkey Creek Park.

Reservations are required to camp at some PenMet parks. Visit PenMetParks.org. Camping is not permitted at city parks (Austin Estuary and Eddon), which are not part of the Cascadia Marine Trail.

Nearby, Eddon Boat Park is a historic boatyard that includes the Gig Harbor BoatShop, a nonprofit organization that provides traditional shipwright educational classes and programming to the public in an effort to preserve the community’s maritime heritage.

While a fun adventure, a paddle on the water trails shouldn’t be undertaken without some experience and knowledge of the tides and currents, especially when navigating the strong currents and heavy boat traffic of the Tacoma Narrows. It is also essential to wear a life jacket.

Several miles north of the bay lies Sunrise Beach Park on the Colvos Passage, a popular Scuba diving spot. A short uphill hike leads to a campsite with room for as many as five tents.

Kayak rentals are available at several locations in Gig Harbor including Lee‘s SUP (LeesUp1.com), Gig Harbor Watersports (GigHarborWatersports.com) and Gig Harbor Yachts (HarborKayaks.com).

Historic Netsheds GIG HARBOR’S HISTORIC NETSHEDS BACKGROUND By Stephanie Lile, Executive Director – Harbor History Museum

34

GigHarborGuide.com

A

s early as 1910, Gig Harbor’s first netsheds began appearing along the waterfront. These simple structures, many constructed with rough, hand-hewn fir, were used by local fishermen to store nets and fishing gear.

As the town grew, many netsheds disappeared, displaced by new development and commercial marinas. Today, only 17 netsheds along the western shoreline remain, but Gig Harbor Bay still boasts the largest inventory of historic netsheds on the Puget Sound. In 2008, the City applied for and received a Washington State Historic Preservation Grant from the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP). The 2009 project was completed by National Park Service HAER Maritime Program Coordinator Todd A. Croteau in the summer of 2009. Croteau worked in partnership with the Council of American Maritime Museums (CAMM) and provided on-site demonstrations for Bates Technical College students to complete each Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). University of Washington students Brian Diveley and Shelly Leavens also participated under the management of Croteau. Each structure includes a historical context narrative, measured drawings (24 by 36 mylars) and individual large-format black-andwhite photographs transmitted to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. for inclusion in the Prints and Photographs Division’s HAER Collection. View the Library of Congress website for more details. The documents will be held in the public domain and be available through the Library’s website “Built in America”.

>> PRESERVATION EFFORTS Gig Harbor’s Historic Commercial Fishing Netsheds were listed by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation on their 2008 Most Endangered Structures List. You can read more in the National Trust’s Preservation Magazine article, “Washington’s Fishing Sheds Get Boost.” View the Fishing in the NW YouTube Video by Jim Gillette that records a day during the 2011 fall fishing season outside the mouth of Gig Harbor. Andy Babich is skipper of the purse seiner, “Ocean Dream”. He and his crew fish for Chum Salmon in West Pass. More history on Gig Harbor and its commercial fishing fleet can be found on the Harbor History Museum website. For more information about registering a historic netshed, check the Historic Waterfront Dock / Netshed Eligibility Checklist on the Registering Your Netshed page or call our Planning Department.

>> SIGNIFICANCE The 17 extant netsheds in Gig Harbor, Washington, are significant as remnants of the community’s cultural heritage and economic development. Families, mostly of Croatian ancestry, have passed down the netsheds and fishing vessels for several generations. Many of the extant netsheds are an integral part of successful commercial fishing operations and are used for storing and mending fishing nets as well as repairing the equipment used for commercial vessels. Except for the remaining commercial fishing boats in the harbor, netsheds are the only surviving architectural connection between the community and what was once one of the most successful fishing fleets on the west coast. This would not be complete if we did not give tribute to our Native Americans, the band from the Puyallup Tribe called Squababsh that came here before the 1800’s.

>> PROJECT INFORMATION The City of Gig Harbor has taken steps to provide incentives for property owners who retain historic netsheds, and in 2006 conducted a general survey of the seventeen remaining structures lining the harbor’s waterfront. In 2008, Mildred Andrews of the Andrews Group completed an independent survey of Gig Harbor’s historic downtown. The city secured grant funds from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation to document the netsheds for the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), a division of the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Todd Croteau, of the HAER Maritime Program, supervised the documentation team, which consisted of Brian Diveley and Shelly Leavens, both Sally Kress Tompkins Maritime Documentation interns. A survey team of students from Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Washington, also lent support to the documentation effort. The documentation team’s liaison to the netshed owners was Special Projects Coordinator Lita Dawn Stanton.

THINGS TO DO - GIG HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL

Gig Harbor Film Festival Q&A WITH FESTIVAL COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR MELANIE KERR PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE GIG HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL

T

he Gig Harbor Film Festival is known as one of the top places for filmmakers to showcase their art, bringing filmmakers from far and wide to the beautiful Galaxy Theatre in Uptown Gig Harbor. The 2020 event, scheduled to run September 24 through 27, was sadly forced to cancel due to health concerns and fundraising difficulties in light of COVID-19, but attendees look forward to the last week of September 2021, which promises a return of the beloved festival. We recently caught up with Festival Communications Director Melanie Kerr on what makes the Gig Harbor Film Festival such a wonderful community event, and what visitors can look forward to in 2021! What can first-time festival visitors expect? The Gig Harbor Film Festival is a four-day celebration of cinematic storytelling featuring the work of independent filmmakers from around the world. A selection of thoughtfully programmed films in a variety of genres are screened throughout the weekend to large audiences of local and visiting film-lovers at our beautiful Galaxy Theatre, Uptown Gig Harbor. Many visiting filmmakers choose to attend the festival to promote their films in person, and audiences enjoy the opportunity to meet and interact with them during post-screening Q&A sessions and parties.

GigHarborGuide.com

What makes Gig Harbor’s Film Festival unique when compared to some of the others around the country? I believe it’s because of our exceptional standard of hospitality. We roll out the red carpet for our filmmakers and guests with accommodations, a ride service, catered parties and their own onsite lounge. Also, our filmmakers regularly comment on what a thrill it is to see their work in such a beautiful world-class theatre. In addition to the luxurious viewing environment the Galaxy provides for audiences, our theatre delivers state-of-the-art film projection quality that is simply unrivaled anywhere else. This is incredibly appealing for many filmmakers who are accustomed to seeing their films shown in older art house theatres, community centers, and occasional makeshift venues. What do you want people to know about and what are the differences between independent filmmakers in comparison to studio-backed filmmakers? We strive to share the message that this festival is about people coming together to share the art of storytelling through film. It’s about cultivating a community of filmmakers and film-lovers who come together to experience stories in their most pure and undiluted form about things that matter most to those who created them. Stories about these kinds of things, told in this way,

are what is special about independent film and worth celebrating. Can you tell me about the youth film competition that was held this year? Our annual 72 Hour Film Competition, scheduled for late March, was cancelled. This event is so well loved by our community and is particularly popular with our local youth. In light of that, we wanted to provide a safe alternative for our young filmmakers to share their stories. In the early days of our statewide lockdown, we knew this group in particular carried their own unique set of thoughts, feelings, and burdens that needed to be heard. As the submissions came rolling in, we were stunned by the power these clear, thoughtful films had to inspire and uplift us during such a difficult time. We were reminded how important it is for all of us to feel heard, and the essential role of the arts to provide platforms for all voices. Now, with our annual film festival cancelled for the fall of this year, we are particularly grateful to our Youth Film Competition participants. Their resilience and ability to find such simple truth, beauty, and optimism during a global crisis gives us hope for the future. In the meantime if, as they say, “we’re all in this together”, we consider ourselves fortunate to be sharing today with the talented, thoughtful youth of our community. Is there anything new and exciting you would like to share with our readers? There’s always something new and exciting happening for us. Year after year, we just keep growing and expanding on our offerings. For the second year in a row, we made the list of FilmFreeway’s Top 100 Film Festivals in the World. This honor is especially rewarding for us as the list represents the top 100 of approximately 8,000 festivals worldwide, and our place on it was earned by excellent filmmaker reviews. We’re also very excited about the continued expansion of our Youth Initiative which, so far, has been an excellent way to engage our local youth in filmmaking. For up-to-date information on the Gig Harbor Film Festival, including events and the 2021 Gig Harbor Film Festival, visit GigHarborFilm.org.

S

ummer concerts in Skansie Park are one of the most beloved warm-weather events in Downtown Gig Harbor. Situated on the waterfront, near the mouth of the harbor, the park is accessible via boat, kayak or paddleboard, or concert goers can bring a blanket and snag a seat on the lawn. A dance floor is provided for those moments when the music and the mood combine in just the right way.

Whether coming by land or by sea, the Tuesday night series welcomes one and all with live entertainment from local musicians and well-known bands. A celebration of local talent set against one of Washington’s most picture-perfect backgrounds, the evenings are provided free of charge. Each Tuesday night throughout the summer, concerts go from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Concert goers can visit nearby downtown eateries like the Tides Tavern for elevated pub fare, Brix 25 for Pacific Northwest cuisine and a knockout wine list, or El Pueblito for authentic Mexican fare. Dine-in or pick up carryout at local favorite Susanne’s Bakery for sandwiches and pastries, or stop for a wood-fired pizza from Millville Pizza Company. Within walking distance, visitors can sample local brews from Seven Seas Brewery, or stop in for a tasting at Heritage Distilling Co. Should you choose to view by water, Gig Harbor Yachts offers electric boat rentals, perfect for an on-the-water picnic. For a vintage feel, rent an electric classic motorboat, a canoe or skiff from the Gig Harbor BoatShop. To host a viewing party, the adjacent Club @ the Boatyard offers a private rental space just above the concert. For an overnight stay, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Guesthouse @ the Boatyard offers outdoor seating and private decks overlooking the concert and the harbor. Within walking distance are The Maritime Inn, The Waterfront Inn, and a number of outstanding Airbnb or VRBO options if an overnight stay or long weekend is in the cards. Due to the current health crisis, concert dates are uncertain, however the City will make every effort to continue concerts as soon as Pierce County reaches Phase 4 of the state’s reopening plan. Proceeds from the Veteran Banner project pay for the production costs of the banners. Any remaining funds are donated to Gig Harbor’s Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation. The veteran banners will hang from streetlights in the community mid-September (coinciding with the “Race for a Soldier” event) through late November. he Skansie Visitor and Interpretive Center offers yearround family exploration through Harbor WildWatch’s interactive exhibits and the City of Gig Harbor’s helpful information about the surrounding harbor. Located in historic downtown Gig Harbor, the Center is housed in the 1908 home of the Skansie brothers, who were foundational to the history of the city. Upon entering, visitors will be greeted by a friendly volunteer who is happy to share insider-tips about Gig Harbor or assist with maps and brochures. The Center is also home to Harbor WildWatch, an environmental organization that inspires stewardship of the Puget Sound and greater Salish Sea. Their free exhibits include salt water touch tanks with live sea creatures (with popular sea star and crab locales), microscopes, an augmented reality sandbox, and a robust animal skull collection with a gray whale vertebrae. Harbor WildWatch is a community gem, educating more than 30,000 visitors and residents every year about the surrounding marine and terrestrial environments. They offer over 600 programs for all ages: from STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) workshops in Pierce and Kitsap county schools, to live SCUBA dives in Gig Harbor Bay, and science socials at a local brewery with regional researchers. Their small staff of four believes that STEM-learning should be fun and, equally, that providing free education about the local environment inspires the community to protect it.

“We truly believe that exposing people to the unique creatures in the Salish Sea will inspire them to care about those animals,” says Executive Director Lindsey Stover. “They are then more likely to take steps to protect that creature and the habitat it relies on through personal behavior choices at home, work and school.” The organization was founded in 2004 by a resident concerned with pollutants from a house project entering her local waters. Since this time, with the help of a knowledgeable team of volunteers, they have grown to become a locally recognized name. Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of Harbor WildWatch. They receive naturalist training from staff to assist with programs and range in age from students to retired residents. And Harbor WildWatch is always looking for more volunteers! One of their most popular programs takes place in the summer to introduce beach-goers to their aquatic neighbors. Harbor WildWatch’s biologists, clad in recognizable blue, step lightly as they lead walking tours across public and state park beaches at low-tide. The result is recognition of not only local species, but also a hearty lesson on beach etiquette and how to respect these creatures. Programs span from Tacoma all the way up to south Kitsap County shores. Oftentimes program-goers leave with a new appreciation and curiosity for the environment. The team jokes that they are “all weather people,” and indeed, year-round, their programs can be enjoyed throughout both Pierce and Kitsap Counties. A full schedule of Harbor WildWatch’s programs can be found on their website at HarborWildWatch.org.

After a fun day paddling the harbor, hiking the trails, or strolling through beautiful downtown, many are in search of a refreshing beverage to cap off an already fantastic day. From brands known throughout the Pacific Northwest —even the nation— to small capacity microbrews, there are many options in which to sample. 64

This unique setup is all about supporting up-and-coming brewers who are looking to take their passion and turn it into a profession. A three-barrel brewing system allows multiple brewers to share equipment and encourages the creation of new nano-breweries. You’ll get to sample beers not found anywhere else while supporting a local small business. It’s not just beer here, as you’ll find other small-batch wine, spirits and hard cider as well. The tasting room is family friendly, and there are snacks and gourmet hot dogs to enjoy while you sample.

Located at the Tacoma Narrows Airport, The HUB brings one of Tacoma’s longest standing breweries right here to Gig Harbor. The large space includes both indoor and outdoor seating where you can watch the planes come and go. Classic Harmon beers are served up alongside seasonal offerings and occasionally experimental ales and lagers as well. Where you stay for delicious pizza or their well-known burgers and a pint or fill up a growler to go, your thirst will be quenched!

The brewers at Wet Coast Brewing Company believe that there is a beer for everyone and are on a mission to deliver that beer. The brewery puts out stouts and brown, pales and IPAs, and Northwest-inspired seasonal offerings. The variety of dark or light, hoppy and malty provides guests a chance to find a style they appreciate or discover a beer that might just become their new favorite. Visitors get to see the brewing process directly from the tasting rooms, where you can order a pint, flight, or beer to go.

A Gig Harbor staple, Finholm’s Market has been around for what feels like forever. Stop in the taproom located along the historic waterfront for a refreshing pour from one of its 13 rotating taps featuring craft brews from throughout the Pacific Northwest. Or you can browse the over 100 varieties of bottled and canned beers and grab some bites at the deli. For non-beer drinkers, the market also offers wine and cider, making it a great stop for everyone.

This small, family-owned vineyard boasts views of Vashon Island, the Puget Sound and Ollala Bay. Its tasting room features a variety of reds and whites from renowned winemaker Matthew Loso made from grapes grown on the premises as well as throughout Eastern Washington. Sip on a selection from Pinot Gris and Viognier to the local favorite, Golubok, a traditionally European grape reminiscent of Cabernet Sauvignon that is particularly well-suited to the Puget Sound climate.

Located on Fox Island, this local gathering space offers fun and libations for the entire family. Explore the twostory restaurant and pub space that includes a family-friendly upstairs, or relax with a brew in hand on the beautiful patio which features two outdoor fire pits, a fountain and gazebo.

HERITAGE MARKERS

Markers: A Sign Marks the Spot By Stephanie Lile, Harbor History Museum Photos Courtesy Harbor History Museum

A

long Gig Harbor’s waterfront, a series of markers note the sites and scenes of key events in our area’s history. As you might imagine, Gig Harbor has not always looked as it does now, and heritage markers serve as a window to the past.

SIDE NOTE: THE NATURALISTS AMONG US WILL ALSO ENJOY THE INTERPRETIVE MARKERS EXPLAINING THE REGIONAL NATURAL LIFE PLACED ALONG THE ROUTE AS WELL.

68

GigHarborGuide.com

For example, did you know that before the Narrows Bridge was built in 1940, ferries did all the heavy lifting of cars and passengers around the sound. Some of the first passenger ferries, nicknamed the “Mosquito Fleet,” docked at the north end of the harbor at what is now the Peninsula Yacht Basin. Later ferries docked at what was once “People’s Dock” next to today’s Tides Tavern. After the Narrows Bridge collapsed on November 7, 1940, the ferry landing just outside the mouth of the harbor was immediately recommissioned and the ferries put back into service. Other markers around town tell of first peoples, early settlers, and local heroes. At Donkey Creek Park, former location of Borgen’s Building supply, a marker tells of Gig Harbor’s first residents, a band of the Puyallup Tribe. The native settlement was at the current site of the Harbor History Museum, and according to the

1880 census, was home to more than 60 people, including men from the Pacific Islands. Early settlers included immigrants from the Dalmatian Coast of what is now Croatia, as well as Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Samuel Jerisich and his wife Anna, a first nations woman from the Penelakut Tribe located near Vancouver, BC, arrived here in 1867. They claimed a large homestead near the mouth of the harbor all the way up what is now Soundview Drive. A fisherman by trade, Jerisich and two other immigrants, Goldman and Farragut, began fishing the local waters with seine nets, a technique brought with them from the old country. The most recent marker to be placed is one devoted to local mountain climbers Luther Jerstad and Marty Hoey. As you stand at the north end of the harbor, you can see Mount Rainier rising high above the horizon. Jerstad and Hoey trained on Rainier in preparation for the bigger climb to come—Everest. Check out the marker at the Bogue viewing platform to learn their fates. The truth of it all, is that Gig Harbor would not be the unique, beautiful city it is today were it not for the historic preservation

efforts taken by citizens throughout the city. The Gig Harbor BoatShop building, once Eddon Boat and before that Glein Boat, is an important historic site that harkens back to Gig Harbor’s strong boat building history. The Skansie Netshed and the Ancich Netshed are both unique historic structures that provide insight to the region’s commercial fishing industry. Even the original Peninsula Light Company and Austin Mill sites are identified with historic markers that allude to the changing waterfront that we know as Gig Harbor. But what is the point of historic markers other than serving as a signpost of a long dead past? They are sparks for the imagination that help us contemplate other times and other ways of thinking. They are the reminders that human history is ever changing, for good and bad, and that these sites hold a resonance that is worth remembering and acknowledging across time. From the City Park to the old Ferry Landing at the mouth of the harbor, you’ll find no less than 20 historic markers. Each one bears a unique story of Gig Harbor’s journey from then to now.

SENIOR LIVING COURTESY OF HERON’S KEY

Senior Living in the Harbor AN UNPARALLELED LIFESTYLE BY RACHEL KELLY

G

ig Harbor is large enough for a sense of community but small enough to know your neighbor. It’s a perfect place to settle down. From downtown waterfront concerts, swing dancing under the stars and moonlit walks on the waterfront, there is no shortage of things to do. It is no surprise that Gig Harbor boasts and supports a variety of senior living options. For the healthy and independent individual who is interested in living in a community of peers, there are more than eight 55-plus active living communities. Individuals who wish to live in these communities can buy affordable, single-story, easy-to-maintain lots with access to various outdoor amenities. These communities range from the Hillcrest mobile park to Laurelwood Senior Apartments. For the independent senior who does not wish to cook, clean, or is no longer driving, there are five independent living communities. These apartments are rentable and usually include a vibrant community and homelike feel, with interactive mealtimes and communal space. Each apartment in each community is its own private space to the couple or individual, allowing for ownership while not sacrificing civil engagement. Examples include The Lodge at Mallard’s Landing. There are eight assisted living communities in Gig Harbor for individuals in need of further care for dementia, medications, meals, housekeeping and daily self-care. These homes host community activities, encouraging activity and independence, while providing for specialized needs. Usually these homes or

70

GigHarborGuide.com

apartments have private or shared rooms for rent and benefit from close community. There is the more affordable option of Mercycare Adult Family Home, and the more comprehensive Sound Vista Village of Village Concepts of Gig Harbor. There are five nursing homes in the larger community that provide 24- hour care for a variety of medical issues associated with age, two of these specializing in memory care. These homes and facilities are for individuals who are no longer able to care for themselves, and their loved ones are also ill-equipped for fulltime care. These include the smaller and more personable highend Family First Adult Family Home to the larger ManorCare Health Services. Lastly, there are several continuing care communities. These communities are meant to be neighborhoods that support seniors from age 55 until the end of their lives. Continuing care communities provide the variety of services meant for independent active living, while also providing for the medical services that seniors may need as they age. You will find a diverse group of people of all ages in these communities, as well as a variety of experiences. These include, but are not limited to, Penrose Harbor at Heron’s Key, Kensington Gardens, Harbor Place at Cottesmore, and Cottesmore of Life Care. At Kensington Gardens, seniors enjoy independent resort-style living, with personalized care options as they age. Harbor Place at Cottesmore offers independent retirement and assisted living, with an on-site salon, spa, fitness center and restaurant-like dining, while it’s sister community Cottesmore of Life Care offers 24-hr skilled nursing and inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.
