I have been visiting and writing about the hotels and resorts in Thailand for over a decade as a function of my work with golf resorts around the world. When my sedulous partner, Khun Bew, suggested we produce this Best of Vacation Hotel and Resort book for the expansive territory of Thailand, I thought it would be a great opportunity. I was able to research the superb vacation options the traveler has when visiting the cities, beaches, coastlines, mountains, islands and jungles of Thailand – 2,000 kilometers from north to south; from Chiangmai to Phuket/Kanchanaburi to Koh Trang. So many splendid, diverse choices exist for the budget or luxury tourist. Well, over the years I had flown, driven, walked and talked to see many of the hotels, most of them owned by Thai families – with their hearts and souls invested into the property and service to the client. Many thrilling surprises. The joy was in meeting the enthusiastic owners and the many general managers from around the planet. Dedicated, witty, overwhelmed – they all excel and bring a passion for achievement. They brought character to the properties. hailand, the only Southeast Asian nation never to have been colonized by European powers, is a constitutional monarchy whose current head of state is HM Bhumibol Adulyadej. A unified Thai kingdom has existed since the mid14th century, and Thailand was known as Siam until 1939, when it officially became the Kingdom of Thailand.

Population
Thailand is the 50th largest country in the world; most nearly equal in size to Spain. Located just 15 degrees north of the equator, Thailand has a tropical climate, and temperatures typically range from 19 to 38 degrees C (66-100 F). Thailand’s largest peak, Doi Inthanon, is 2,565 meters (8,415 ft) tall. Thailand covers 510,890 sq km of land and 2,230 sq km of water. The coastline of Thailand is 3,219 km long. Thailand’s longest shared border is with Myanmar (Burma), stretching 1,800 km.
The population of Thailand comprises roughly 65 million citizens, the majority of whom are ethnically Thai, though peoples of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese and Lao origin are also represented to varying degrees. Almost seven million citizens live in the capital city, Bangkok, though this number varies seasonally and is otherwise difficult to accurately count.

The weather in Thailand is generally hot and humid: typical of its location within the tropics. Generally speaking, Thailand can be divided into three seasons: “hot” season, rainy season and “cool” season, though Thailand’s geography allows visitors to find suitable weather somewhere in the country throughout the year.

Thailand has an approximate geographical area of 514, 000 sq km (200,000 sq miles). This makes Thailand roughly equivalent in size to Spain or Texas. Capital : Bangkok
More than 92% of the population speaks Thai or one of it’s regional dialects. While the Thai language is the official language of Thailand, as a result of its cosmopolitan capital city and established tourism infrastructure, English is spoken and understood throughout much of the land.
People Roughly 80% of Thailand’s nearly 65 million citizens are ethnically Thai. The remainder consists primarily of peoples of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese and Lao decent. In Bangkok, there is a greater diversity of ethnicities, including a large number of expatriate residents from across the globe. Other geographic distinctions of the population include a Muslim majority in the south near the Malaysian border, and hill tribe ethnic groups, such as the Hmong and Karen, who live in the northern mountains.
Religion 94.6% of Thais are Buddhist, 4.6% of Thais are Muslim, 0.7% of Thais are Christian.

oh Samui is the third largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Koh Chang. Located west of the Gulf of Thailand, about 35 km northeast of Surat Thani, it has a population of 65,000 and welcomes 1.5 million tourists annually. It was isolated with few roads until the early 1970s, when the 25 km journey from one side of the island to the other took a day over mountainous central jungles. Now, the various lowland and coastal areas are connected by a single 51 km road, running mostly along the coastline and encircling the island. No hotel chains existed 15 years ago. Santiburi Dusit served the new golf course 10 years ago.The Minor Group launched their first Anantara Hotel, and in 2010, the Four Seasons. Today, Conrad, Starwood, InterContinental, Banyan Tree and Marriott are among the brands that add luster to the island. Samui’s weather is relatively dry. The heaviest precipitation is typically from October to November. The economy is based, primarily, on a successful tourist industry, as well as exports of coconut and rubber.
Samui Airport is a private airport built (1989) and owned by Bangkok Airways. In 2012, theThai Government announced the possibility of a second airport due to complaints of high airport fees and ticket pricing. Air Asia and Nok Air offer flights to Surat Thani, connecting with several ferries, including two car/passenger ferries to the northwest of the island. Samui has become Thailand’s second largest resort business behind Bangkok, surpassing Phuket.

were soon to emerge as hotel pioneers on the island. “We started a small restaurant in Nathon in 1990 with four tables,” he reminisced, “but it was too quiet at night.” Three months later they opened a 60-seater with a flower shop across the island in Lamai Beach. “This was a hit!” In 1994 they ventured north into Chaweng Beach (on the northeast shore) – which had but 10 restaurants at the time – and opened Drop In with 250 seats. For 12 years it ruled the road, before being converted into a plaza by the owner.

Maybe 10, and no chain hotels.” “The Muang Samui was always fully-booked because of the high tourist demand and we were turning away business. So we decided to take another step,” smiled Khun Chananthip. “We bought land 15 kilometers up the road at Choengmon Beach and began building, what is now the upscale Royal Muang Samui Villas.”

for 15+ years – the oldest existing restaurant in Chaweng. A longboat is beached in front, filled with crushed ice and a bounty of fresh seafood. The nautical theme is carried inside: a fascinating, 40-foot, wooden, three-masted Thai schooner lies in permanent dry dock.

Chef Ajarn Amintra began practicing her art as a child and now is an accomplished master of Thai cooking in the Royal Tradition. She cooked for Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Royal Highness Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. What a resume! She presented our table with five Thai entrees: Deep Fried Sea Bass with Chili Garlic Sauce, Rock Lobster with Tamarind Sauce, Chicken Curry in Potato Cups, Prawns and Pineapple in Red Curry Sauce, and Seafood Salad. Three western entrees – Duck Breast with Peppercorn Sauce and fresh Thai Mangos, Grilled Sea Bass with Fresh Tomato Concassee and Wild Mushrooms, and Filet of Sole with Creamed Scallops – were all delicious.
Lare Lae offers an assortment of lunch entrees. Snacks, soups, salads, sandwiches, seven different burgers, pizza and pasta. I selected a generous portion of pasta in creamy pesto sauce with lump crabmeat and walnuts. Delicious! Red Snapper topped with herb-seasoned shrimp and julienne zucchini in pesto was another delight.

Don’t Miss in Central Region Suan Phueng This bordering district of Ratchaburi would have fallen off the travellers’ radar had it not been for a string of Mediterranean-themed resorts dotting its mountainous landscape. Most are destinations in themselves, complete with a horse ranch, sheep farm, trickling streams and European gardens. But securing a room at one of these resort farms requires advance planning, as each has only a limited number of rooms and, believe it or not, they fill in very fast.

The Grand Palace Probably the most visited and remembered landmark of Thailand, The Grand Palace in Bangkok is where every visitor must pay a visit at least once in their lifetime. The construction of the Grand Palace began in 1782 during the reign of King Rama I, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty, to become a royal residence, and has been the utmost architectural symbol of Thailand ever since. The Grand Palace served as a significant royal residence until 1925 and is now used for ceremonial purposes only.
An 11-tiered waterfall located in the verdant forest area of Kaeng Krachan National Park where various kinds of birds and butterflies are found. Some levels of the waterfall are reachable through trekking trails, of which visitors may be able to spot some wildlife animals and several species of rare birds along the way. The best time to visit the fall is from November to April and to watch the butterflies from 7am to 10am. The waterfall can be reached by local transport from Hua Hin (a distance of 63 kilometers).
Amphawa Floating Market An afternoon floating market by the canal near Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram (parking is available). On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 12am – 8pm, the Amphawa Canal is occupied by vendors who pack their boats with food and drinks, such as fried sea mussels, noodles, coffee, O-liang (iced black coffee) and sweets. 20

We splashed along quietly on the upper-deck of the
sleek Pimalai craft – warm, salty, tropical breezes on our cheeks, and cold drinks in our hands – gliding south over a mystifyingly Technicolor, translucent sea. Then (out of the blue) towering, enchanting, singular rock formations (stalagmites, vertical islands, prehistoric outcroppings?) began to sprout to our front…and left…and right…and charmed us for the
