So Much Gratitude For Home
Welcome to Home, our annual issue dedicated to the spaces we occupy every day, the places where we find refuge and strength from the world. While putting together these stories inside, I couldn’t help but reflect on the recent tragedies affecting so many Americans the past few months. Devastating hurricanes, flooding and wildfires have destroyed thousands of homes. More devastating is the lives lost and those forever changed.
These terrible events have been a poignant reminder of how immensely grateful I am for the home I share with my family, as well as the community I call home. This month, we feature several amazing nonprofits who exhibit that sense of home and community. These groups work tirelessly to bring companionship, joy and hot meals to home-bound elderly clients; fill backpacks of food for schoolchildren who may have bare pantries at home; or offer safety and care for anyone going through unsafe family situations. So much good going on here at home.
And we love the broader work of the Douglas County Community Foundation. This organization first started in 2000 provides leadership, expertise, and funding support and guidance to smaller nonprofits that have a big heart but may lack business expertise needed to run efficiently. In this month’s issue, you’ll hear from the DCCF’s new Executive Director Kirsten Swanson, as she introduces herself and her deep roots in philanthropy and goals for the DCCF.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you — in your city, neighborhood and most all of your home.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

1-7: Last month, the Happy Crew youth group celebrated moving into its new home — a leased space on the top floor at the Business Foundry in Lone Tree. Highlands Ranch resident Amy Mays founded the organization five years ago in an effort to create a support system for youth after a series of mental health crises in the community — and she routinely hosted crowds of up to 65 teens in her home during weekly meetups, until now. The Happy Crew offers a positive atmosphere and programming each week during the school year. For more information or to donate, visit thehappycrew.org.

ARCH INSPIRATION FOR MODERN LIVING
ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA LORD
The Arch: A Classic Interior Feature Stands the Test of Time
Architectural arches symbolize renewal, rebirth, victory, and passage. They signify strength, support, and a connection to the divine. One of the earliest architectural examples of “form follows function,” arches allow supported weight to be more evenly dispersed across all sides and add decorative visual interest.
Romans used them in aqueducts and bridges; Gothic builders incorporated arches into cathedral ceilings and doorways. They are synonymous with classic Mediterranean design. Grand monuments, such as the Gateway to India’s horseshoe-shaped arches, Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, and even St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, all pay homage to this architectural staple.
As interior design has broadened what is on-trend in recent years, arches have made a natural and expected come-back. Once rejected in modern geometric-focused design, the arch complements 2025 interior trends towards more organic, curvilinear shapes.
Michelle Cutter, local interior designer and principal at Michelle Cutter Designs, isn’t interested in what’s hot right now. She has used arches in her designs for years and embraces the contrast arches create with more modern styling.
Cutter says, “Arches soften the linear lines of modern design with rounded and feminine elements.”
Cutter loves structural arches, but other rounded arch elements can be found throughout her spaces. The rounded end of a kitchen island, the curved top of an upholstered dining chair, a chandelier, even a kitchen faucet. None of this however, contributes to a cluttered or outdated space. Materials and other elements can reflect a modern aesthetic.
It’s all a part of Cutter’s balanced approach to design. Trends come and go. She aims to create classic yet relevant and contemporary spaces for her clients. In addition to incorporating arches, Cutter says, “Classic shaker-style cabinetry can be updated by varying the width and depth of the trim. Thin shaker cabinet door styles provide a fresh spin on the traditional door style. Incorporating tambour brings in character and adds a tactile and visual sensory experience to the space.”
She continues, “Tangy orange ’90s oak has been replaced with less jarring, more soothing stains in a variety of tones. White oak with a natural stain offers a beautiful balance of modern sophistication and cozy warmth, making it the perfect complement to contemporary design. Its versatility allows it to blend seamlessly with sleek, minimalist furniture and clean lines typical of contemporary designs, while the warmth of the wood softens the overall feel, creating an inviting, homely atmosphere. It really has an effortless connection between elegance and comfort.”
So, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree, embrace your inner Roman or Goth, Parisian, South Asian, or even Midwesterner, and look to the arch for inspiration on your next interior update.

MOCHA MOUSSE: PANTONE’S
Color of the Year
Add This Luscious, Scrumptious Color Seasonally or Long Term
ARTICLE BY KENDRA PHILLIPS
Warm Whites and Mocha Mousse
Yester Home Cottage Style Shelving & Decor
If you’re even vaguely familiar with the world of fashion, arts, and color, you’ve definitely heard of Pantone, the lifestyle company that is known for its iconic colors and creating trends to bring into every aspect of your life. Each year, they announce a trendsetting Color of the Year, and for 2025 it’s Mocha Mousse.
Mocha Mousse is a vibrant, yet neutral taupe brown that evokes the senses and creates a calming atmosphere. It perfectly blends together luscious earth tones with energizing warmth to pull you into its dreamy embrace.
Mocha Mousse is an incredibly versatile color whether you’re looking to incorporate it into your fashion, home, or lifestyle. Whether you want it as a part of your everyday life or just for a season, Mocha Mousse has something for everyone.
SEASONAL:
If you’re looking for a quick way to embrace Mocha Mousse in your home decor, seasonal accents are an easy starting point. Consider adding pillows, blankets, tableware, and small decor in this color. These pieces are perfect for refreshing your space without committing to larger investments. Art prints, vases, or even a set of sleek dinnerware in this warm tone can help set a welcoming, calming mood.
The beauty of Mocha Mousse in your closet is its adaptability across seasons. During the warmer months, it pairs effortlessly with light denim, creamy whites, and khaki — think a relaxed, cottage-style vibe. For those who love bold color combinations, Mocha Mousse also plays well with teal, turquoise, or even a pop of sunshine yellow. The contrast between the deep richness of mocha and these brighter, more playful colors creates a sophisticated, eclectic look.
As the cooler months approach, you can turn to warmer neutrals— darker tans, soft beiges, and navy blues—to create a cozier, more refined atmosphere. Think polished stripes, structured designs, and supple textures to bring out the color’s luxurious side.
YEAR-LONG:
For those wanting to put more of an investment into Mocha Mousse, a great way to do this is through your clothing. Adding accent pieces like a purse, scarf, pair of shoes, or even a jacket will bring sophistication into your wardrobe. For longer-term wear of these pieces, pair them with neutral materials like denim, leather, and cozy knits. This color family works equally well on men and women.

LONG-TERM:
Investing in high-quality pieces of furniture in Mocha Mousse, like a couch, accent chair, bedding, or even painting a room, will add depth and warmth to any room, offering a sophisticated backdrop to your home. One thing to keep in mind is that gray tones, which have ruled interiors in recent years, are starting to phase out in favor of more inviting and grounded neutrals like Mocha Mousse. This color pairs well with natural materials and finishes, giving spaces a more tactile, organic feel. Another great way to add Mocha Mousse into your home long term is high quality wallcoverings. Adding wallpaper to a room can instantly elevate its aesthetic appeal, transforming a plain space into something rich in character and style. Whether your style is big bold floral patterns or small delicate details, adding wallpaper to your home will bring a level of quality, luxury, and visual depth that paint alone can’t add.

Bobbi Beck Groove Line Retro Wallpaper
Mocha Mousse is an incredibly versatile color whether you’re looking to incorporate it into your fashion, home, or lifestyle.
Mocha Mousse represents a shift toward warmer, more inviting tones. With rose, maroon, and other red undertones making a comeback, we’re seeing a move away from the cool grays that dominated the previous decade. This color has a timeless appeal — neither too bold nor too subtle, it manages to feel both contemporary and classic. Whether in your home decor or your wardrobe, Mocha Mousse adds a refined, welcoming touch that will continue to stand the test of time.

Meet Your Neighbor: HollyCoors& Taylor Smith
MOM AND DAUGHTER TEAM UP TO HELP OTHERS FIND THEIR FAMILY HOME
Mother-daughter real estate team, Holly Coors and Taylor Smith, talk about their deep roots in Colorado, making a home in Douglas County and finding joy in family.
Holly, tell us about your background:
I was born into family with a very recognizable name and product but was grounded with humble roots. I pursued a master’s degree in International Business in order to join the international team at Coors Brewing Co. and participate in the expansion of the company’s offerings outside the U.S. I spent 13 years at Coors and developed deep experience in sales, marketing and international business. In 2018, I became a licensed real estate agent and joined LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. Two years ago, my oldest daughter, Taylor Smith, decided to join me to create a new family business.
“Over the years, we’ve lived in Golden, Applewood, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree. While we’ve moved a lot, I’ve always told my kids that home is where Mom is.”
Coming from a well-known Colorado family, what does “family” mean to you?
I grew up with three siblings, a very busy family, and when we weren’t playing sports, we were playing board games, cards, or could always be found outside on the trampoline. I duplicated this same family “togetherness” with my own family, even as a single mom and only caregiver to my four kiddos. Over the years, we’ve lived in Golden, Applewood, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree. While we’ve moved a lot, I’ve always told my kids that home is where Mom is. I doubled down on making sure my kids had a safe space full of love and laughter, support and plenty of “fur therapy” with our animals. My kids have adopted a core behavior that is so important to me and that is showing up for each other at all times in all situations. Family always comes first! We bring that same approach to our work and treat our clients like family. Our goal is to provide a seamless environment and get to know our clients on a personal level, so we can deliver the results they desire and deserve.
Taylor, what’s it like working with your mom?
I’ve been working with my mom for two years now, after getting my real estate license. I’d always heard my mom talk about working directly with her dad for five years when she was at Coors, and that time spent together led her to see her dad in a new light. She saw what fed his passions, what made him tick. I watched my mom become passionate building her real estate business and decided to join her and create a special bond. We are a good, balanced team. While my mom has the experience, I bring a new perspective and new generational traits, like social media and other ways of engaging with our clients.
What is the best-kept secret in this area?
During the pandemic, we moved to the best-kept secret on our side of town and that is McArthur Ranch. Every lot has acreage, amazing views and abundant wildlife. We are greeted by our five chickens each morning. Our cats roam freely and hunt more than we would like. And our dog MoMo loves her daily walks up the bluffs and all that comes with being in our great outdoors.
