oulder has long been known for design and architectural prominence. The diversity and differentiating home styles are as unique as the residents of our great community. As the son of a custom homebuilder, I developed a love for excellence in craftsmanship and home design. Growing up on a lake in the Midwest, my "interior" design preferences were: brown, lots of wood, animal heads, more brown and more wood. I also appreciated stonework.

Most all of the houses on our lake were either renovated original homes from the 1930's and 1940's, or new builds that resembled classic "lake home" style. In the early 2000's, an old house across the lake was scrapped and up goes this white and grey box with windows. The first "modern" design home on Lake Lotawana was being built and I was NOT having it. How dare someone come change the landscape of my beloved lake where our family had laid roots some 70 years prior. I bet that house didn't have a single dead animal on the wall. The homeowner probably doesn't know how to drive a boat, or ski, or sail. My best friend Austin (now brother in law) was attending the architecture program at CU during the construction of Captain Kirk's storage shed. "Dude, that house is siiiiiick!" Austin was obviously ahead of the game at this point. It took me moving to Boulder, but I came around. Now I am a HUGE fan of modern and contemporary design.

RUNNING REALLY CAN KEEP YOU YOUNG, SAYS CU-BOULDER-HUMBOLDT STUDY If you are an active senior who wants to stay younger, keep on running. A new study involving the University of Colorado Boulder and Humboldt State University shows that senior citizens who run several times a week for exercise expend about the same amount of energy walking as a typical 20-year-old. But older people who walk for exercise rather than jog expend about the same amount of energy walking as older, sedentary adults, and expend up to 22 percent more energy walking than the 20-some-

thing crowd. The study, led by Humboldt State Professor Justus Ortega, was published online Nov. 20 in the journal PLOS ONE. “The bottom line is that running keeps you younger, at least in terms of energy efficiency,” says CU-Boulder Associate Professor Rodger Kram of the Department of Integrative Physiology, a co-author on the new study.

DAWSON STUDENTS CHALLENGED TO DESIGN RENEWABLE ENERGY PLAYGROUND; WINNING DESIGN TO BE BUILT ON CAMPUS IN 2015 Dawson School, a K-12 independent school located in Lafayette, Colorado, has initiated The Renewable Energy Playground Design Challenge, giving Dawson students the opportunity to design an interactive play structure that uses solar, wind, and human energy to teach about and generate electricity. The winning design will be built on Dawson’s campus in 2015. Students will be able to interact with the playground to learn about electricity generation. Examples include monitors that measure energy output, special attachments to make the wind and solar components movable, and playground-like structures that allow users to make energy themselves.

Colorado Modern

As HMH Architecture + Interiors celebrates 25 years of dotting the Front Range with distinctive design, partners Harvey Hine and Cherie Goff look into the firm’s future—with a softer edge Article Sandra Henderson

“We sometimes have different ideas, but I think they complement each other.” 18

Boulder Lifestyle | January 2015

“True modern is timeless. It will always be in style.”

H

arvey Hine, AIA, founder and president of HMH Architecture + Interiors, discovered modernism as a young boy in Vienna, Austria, where his family moved from Boston when he was almost eight years old. “My school in Vienna was Bauhaus—white, with glass,” the award-winning architect remembers. “My parents were modernists, and I had the opportunity to see the modern homes of their friends. I really felt connected to this style of design.” Hine returned to the States to earn a Bachelor of Environmental Design from CU and his master’s degree in architecture from Harvard. “When I was in school in the ‘70s and ’80s, modern was not popular. It took me a while to come back to it,” the 58-year old says. “It’s the style I enjoy when I buy something, whether it’s dishes or furniture. It just feels right.” In 1989, Hine—who defines modernism as a lifestyle and the simplicity of form—founded his own architecture firm in Boulder. The iconic Jessor/Menken residence, built in 2001, is perhaps Hine’s most recognizable residential design in town. His clients were avid mountain climbers and wanted a house that integrated their outdoor lifestyle into the architecture, so Hine designed a stair as focal point of the sculptural home, with small punctured windows providing a play of light and shadows on the climb up the rooftop terrace.

HMH 2.0

Then, in 2004, Cherie Goff, AIA, walked in the door. The determined young architect from Frisco, Colo., liked Hine’s work and was looking for a job after studying architecture at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas at Austin, practicing at a couple of different firms and traveling Europe. She began working at HMH within the week, was promoted to partner four years later, and today Goff is vice president of HMH. The two architects share a deep appreciation for the timelessness and simplicity of design from the 1930s. “Le Corbusier is our big favorite,” Goff says of the iconic SwissFrench architect. “We bow to Corbusier every hour,” her counterpart insinuates, laughing. Hine looks back at his firm’s beginnings with nostalgia. “Architecture was much more experimental 25 years ago,” he says. “Today, it is more retrospective. Mid-century modern is very popular.” However, glancing at her business partner, Goff insists, “I can still see some of that funkiness from 25 years ago in his work.” Goff’s own preference for the simplicity of modern architecture and the clarity of rooms is a souvenir from her time living in Denmark.

“I was impressed with the clean lines and design quality of everyday things,” she reflects. “My inclination has always been towards modern, but it was influential to see the Scandinavian style.” With her passion for sustainability and simplicity, the LEED Green Associate adds her own style to the firm. She calls it “Colorado Modern.” “I bring in more of the warmth and comfort people are searching for here,” the self-described mountain girl says. “I love Colorado, and really just fit in with people here in Boulder.” That love for the outdoors Goff shares with her clients undoubtedly inspires her work. “We want to make sure our homes feel like they are part of the landscape,” she says. “A sense of place is integral to design.” The next 25 years

As the younger partner in the firm, Goff is looking toward the next 25 years of HMH. “Harvey and I share a common core in that we want to make great architecture,” she says. “We sometimes have different ideas, but I think they complement each other.” “That makes it more interesting,” interjects Hine. “When modern is no longer popular, what will happen?” “That’s why it is important to focus on modern not as a style but on the idea of modern,” Cherie replies. “True modern is timeless. It will always be in style.”

Art Legacy Boulder’s SmithKlein Fine Art Gallery Passes the Brush

Article Jordan Lebowitz | Photography Ann Klein

A

fter 30 years of owning and operating Pearl Street’s premier fine art gallery, Deborah Smith-Klein has sold the business to her son, Nathan Klein and his wife Ann Klein. As Nathan and Ann close in on their first year of owning the business, they discuss what’s changed, what hasn’t and everything in between. ART AUTHORITY

Due to the subjective nature of art, a strong reputation is required to instill a level of trust within the community. Not only do the artists themselves need to trust who displays their work, art enthusiasts like to feel connected to the artists and community through the gallery they purchase from. Nathan, like his mother before him, breathes art. “I grew up in the business,” he says. “The gallery was my daycare after school, my job in middle school and high school, my summer job in college. My mom would take me on trips when she would look at art in various cities growing up. I did take art history in college, but my education has really been through osmosis. As a family, it was the discussion at the dinner table. It’s (i.e. art) what I knew growing up, not from learning about it in a classroom necessarily, but from participating in it since I was about 3 1/2 years old. Now, my daughter is down here hanging out. It’s neat to see that come full circle. She’ll be brought up in the art world, just as I was.” Ann, who has a degree in communication design and marketing, rebranded the gallery by implementing a design strategy that

“We try and represent what we feel is the best of each style of art,” reflects the artistry upon which Nathan exhibits art. Both Nathan and Ann say their differing skill sets help elevate the gallery to its full potential. Although Nathan is clearly qualified to direct the gallery as it moves forward, his mother, Deborah, still comes by once a week to work as a consultant. Her love for the gallery makes it hard to stay away. MAKING IT THEIR OWN

“Growing up, my mother always told me to ‘dance quickly’ when it comes to change. Don’t get too attached to an artist or a style. Trends do change in the art world and we have a more contemporary taste.” Unlike many galleries, SmithKlein keeps an eclectic mix of styles, rather than focusing on just abstract, realism, impressionism, et cetera. “We try and represent what we feel is the best of each style of art,” says Klein. The gallery is also trending towards large pieces. Nathan hangs all of the art within the gallery and even helps artists pull canvas at times. The hands-on experience that Klein received growing up has allowed him to take the reins and drive the gallery in a fresh direction. WALK-INS WELCOME

Whether you’re an aspiring artist, serious art enthusiast or simply walking by the gallery on a weekend stroll, the Klein’s want you to come in and say hello. The SmithKlein fine art gallery aims to be a community oriented establishment, open to anyone that appreciates what they offer. Nathan has even given young artists the chance to show him their portfolios for consideration. The SmithKlein Gallery re-hangs their walls every month, meaning they feature 12 shows a year. Visit their website to learn about hosting events (coming soon), consulting services and current pieces being displayed.

Café Aion A Neighborhood Café Like No Other Article Jordan Lebowitz | Photography Caroline Treadway

E

xecutive chef, restaurant owner and recent winner of Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen, Dakota Soifer delivers bold flavors and unique cuisine at his neighborhood café. “My parents wanted to be hippies and raise kids,” Soifer says of his rural Maine upbringing. Dakota first began his food-centric life at a very young age. While the word “farm” was never used in Soifer’s description of his childhood home, he was undoubtedly living and working on one. The family grew gardens, pickled, canned and raised livestock such as chickens and goats. Soifer has no institutionalized culinary education, but a few years in school could never replicate the lifetime of knowledge, experience and love he possesses for food.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Before Café Aion opened for business a breakfast joint named Burnt Toast occupied the building. Before Burnt Toast, the space was home to Aion Used Bookstore. People from all walks of life remember the old bookstore crammed full of shelves. “I kept the name to give the Café a place in the neighborhood…because that’s what we are. We don’t use white linens and I love seeing people share food around a table. We’re a neighborhood café,” says Soifer. From CU Boulder alumnus to professors and neighbors that simply live in the area, the community appreciates the namesake as paying homage to the building’s literary past.

"I love seeing people share food around a table. We’re a neighborhood café,” says Soifer.

Elevated Living article Kate Manz | Commentary Cherie Goff & Kate Dixon Photography Joe Hill

Proof that you don’t need to start from scratch to design a dream home, Boulder-based HMH Architecture + Interiors transformed a dark, dated 80s residence in the mountains into a series of connected, lightfilled spaces. Working within the existing exterior walls, the team created an open floor plan that not only provided better flow throughout the home, it also brought in the ample Colorado sunshine, creating a connection between indoors and out. Architect Cherie Goff and Designer Kate Dixon share with us their inspiration and expert advice behind this incredible remodel.

t was important to the family that materials and finishes were chosen with sustainability and durability in mind. With two small children, a baby on the way and a 6-week old puppy, removing the walls between the kitchen, pantry, powder room and work area allowed them to keep an eye on the children while preparing meals. Throughout the home, design details—warm wood, contemporary furniture, local-materials—create the HMH signature Colorado Modern style.

New Year. New You. Making Your World a Better Place, One Decision at a Time Article Jordan Lebowitz

H

ow many New Year’s resolutions have you made? How many have you kept? Is the answer to the first question more than one? Is the answer to the second question zero? Change for self-improvement is a difficult task no matter what self-imposed start date or deadline is involved. Perhaps, the thought of, “I have to do this starting now,” is enough for our own human nature to kick in and disagree, “no I don’t, who are you to tell me what to do?” Often, change only occurs when someone is truly ready, making the struggle to adapt less arduous. People don’t like to be forced into anything. We like to make up our own minds. Everyone should think for themselves, and that’s exactly where change begins…with thought.

DISCIPLINE

NEED SOME HELP? THERES AN APP FOR THAT!

Discipline is not a four-letter word, and even if it were, it certainly doesn’t deserve the negative connotation which engulfs it. Discipline is simply sticking to something. Sticking to something – granted that “something” be positive in nature – is the only way to move forward and reach any kind of accomplishment. While it wouldn’t be true to say that nothing good has ever come without a disciplined approach, it sure does seem that way. No matter what resolution you made this year, simply attack the change(s) one decision at a time. Each decision made in the right direction will hopefully enable more decisions to be made within the confines of your goal. Eventually, the new way of making decisions will take hold of your character and you will become it. You can become healthy! You can become a non-smoker! You can become debt-free! We become what we are by repeating the same thoughts, words and actions over and over again. Making one good decision at a time can become a disciplined way of reprogramming yourself.

11 Most Common New Year’s Resolutions and Apps to Help You Achieve Them:

Conscious Juicing Article Emily O’Brien | Photography Tanya Dueri

J

uicing has been causing quite a stir lately. As I scroll through my social media feeds, I see pictures and recipes for all kinds of mouthwatering drinks. One will energize you while another one helps aid in digestion. Juice today seems so different than the kind I was raised on—the one with added sugar that had an expiration date of months down the road. Wonder Press is a newbie to the Boulder market, having only opened its doors in April of last year. And it is unique in what it offers. The three longtime friends, Robyn Knowlan, Cecily Runge & Brooke Jordan, all witnessed juice bars being opened on the coasts and felt frustrated that Boulder didn’t offer anything close to what they’d experienced. They wondered why a town with such deep foodie roots didn’t have good juice. So they set out to open up shop with the passion that food has the power to transform your life and that the healing force lives in the raw, carefully pressed and unadulterated juice that comes from vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and herbs. Make The Right Concoction

“It’s really about doing juice right & bringing it to Boulder,” states Jordan. "Making the highest quality juice involves important details that we won't compromise on -- 100% organic ingredients, the coldpress method, fresh juice every day, no processing or pasteurizing, low sugar recipes, and serving the juice in a glass bottle," states Co-owner Knowlan. Knowing that not all juice is created equal, they’ve taken the past year to formulate specific juice concoctions to give customers the best in both taste and nutrition. Integrity and values is what helps sets Wonder Press apart. Hospitably Driven Environment

“Juice is just so fun,” says Co-owner Runge. “We wanted a comfortable, fun space for people to gather in,” states Co-owner Jordan. It’s currently a work in progress as they build out a new space to occupy later in the year. They are looking forward to it being conducive to long conversations with friends. Wonder Press’ intent is to have people stop in for a juice date as they would a cocktail or a cup of coffee, only this has a nutritious (and delicious) twist. 54

Boulder Lifestyle | January 2015

Environmentally Conscious

Wonder Press was built sustainably from the ground up. They care about what happens behind-the-scenes of the day-to-day operations. It would be difficult to argue otherwise; the used pulp leftover at the end of the day goes to Mountain Flower Goat Dairy to be consumed for feed. The company takes back the glass bottles it distributes juice in, and sanitizes them for later reuse. “Juice, in addition to really clean eating, can be really healthy,” states Jordan. Juice can give you a mega dose of vitamins and minerals in a short glass. It’s a neat trick to sneaking in additional servings of fruit and vegetables every day. Wonder Press offers pre-bottled juiced that is cold-pressed daily. They also serves nut milks and Wonder Press cleanse packages. Plus they will even 2595 Canyon Blvd. deliver items to your door (or car if Suite 110 the weather is bad). Now how do you Boulder like them apples? 970.618.7632

adelife is one of those special places in Boulder where community happens. But the stimulating mingling of neighbors, shoppers, local artists and creative entrepreneurs isn’t sheer happenstance — it’s carefully cultivated and curated through rotating art shows, live events and performances. When Mae and Daniel Martin Conroy opened Madelife in 2011, the husband and wife who also founded Boulder’s AIM House wanted to create a community hub where people can come to collaborate and nurture their creativity. The 6000-squarefoot space at the corner of 21st and Pearl is at once store, gallery, black-box theater, sound studio and collaborative workspace. Indie-Modern Goods and Local Art

The store/gallery sells indie-modern goods and art from local furniture makers, artisans and designers, as well as Madelife’s own line of products. Vintage pieces, for example a set of Herman Miller Pollock chairs (a staff favorite), and contemporary furniture lines such as Gus Modern round out the collection. “I am constantly surprised how many amazing, creative peo-

ple are making goods here in Boulder and the surrounding towns,” says Leah Brenner, curator and store manager at Madelife. “And having a platform to share this with the community is awesome.” Jewelry, nearly all of it handmade in the region, is a bestseller at the store. What’s more, industrial furniture and goods made from reclaimed materials are making a huge comeback. “People love the idea of bringing back things from the landfill,” says Brenner, who has been with Madelife since day one. An ardent art collector herself, the California transplant particularly relishes curating the rotating works of art in the gallery. “I take pride in knowing who the artists are, what their style is and what makes them unique,” she shares. Creative Accelerator Program

Behind the scenes, Madelife is an incubator and a launchpad for rising local artists and creative entrepreneurs, mostly working in new media. Founded on collaboration and the mentorship of creative and business professionals, the 12-week-long Creative Accelerator Program is designed to help high school graduates explore graphic design, music production, video production and photography before committing to a college degree. But young entrepreneurs and college students, too, can come and learn from accomplished industry partners how to translate talent and creativity into a successful career. “We have people who came through the program and are now out in the community and are graphic designers rather than baristas,” Brenner says.
