industry would be where Candice made her mark. She had been doing her own and her friend’s make up for years and so when she left school in 2012, her next step was enrolling to study to be a beauty therapist, which she did the following year, while also working in the industry, to start racking up that all important hands on experience. In 2014, Candice continued working in the industry while completing her Certificate IV and in March 2015 she set up her business at Georgy’s Hair Design, which she still calls home two years later as she celebrates her two year anniversary. Candice uses Clarins for all her skincare treatments, and also Dermalogica, focussing strongly on the quality and natural based products provided by those two leading suppliers. Teeth whitening has also long been a priority treatment offered by the 22 year old – testament to the fact Candice is always looking to find new services to offer her clients, and it is certainly proving popular. The 45 minute treatment, includes a thorough consultation and then a pain-free 20 minute treatment that includes a cold LED light while the treatment does its

work inside a mouthguard. Candice’s teeth whitening service can brighten your teeth up to eight shades lighter in one sitting. The treatment is very beneficial to people with heavily discoloured teeth likely from the build up of stains from consumption of tea, coffee, cola soft drink, tobacco & red wine. The machine and whitening formula have been specially formulated to work in conjunction together to produce the best results. When the gums and teeth are perfectly healthy there will be no side effects from the whitening process. Shinewhitening also works on caps and crowns lightening 2-8 shades lighter. The teeth whitening treatment lasts up to two years when paired with good, personal dental hygiene. You can make your next appointment with Candice by calling the salon on (08)8725 5835. She works Wednesday and Thursday from 9am-9pm and from 9am-2pm on

HOOD SISTERS ARE HEADED TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS “It’s what I’ve been working towards my whole life. I just can’t believe something I’ve trained and trained for is now happening.” But it is happening. Amber Hood, and her young sister Georgia are headed to Florida for the Youth World Championships from July 24. The softballing duo has finally been selected for an official Australian team – the phone call confirming their place in the team coming last Tuesday afternoon. “I couldn’t believe it when they rang,” Amber said. “I didn’t expect it.” Georgia was also shocked but thrilled. “Bloody

amazing,” said Georgia. “Being the youngest person in the squad I wasn’t sure I had a chance.” But the hard work, the hours of individual training and the move to play A Grade softball in Adelaide has paid dividends. “It shows if you do the work, you can achieve your goals,” Amber said. “Mum’s trained us so hard forever and we got told we wouldn’t make it by a few people but we have done it.” It is believed they are the first sisters to make a national softball team in a dream that has been a family affair. Making the Australian team as regionally

based players is also a coup – Georgia is the only regionally based player headed to the world championships, aside from a Rockhampton based girl. “Having mum to know how we should train and the work we needed to do, really helped,” Georgia said. “We have been able to stay in Mount Gambier and still do the right training and get our game to the level it needed to be.” The journey to Florida started at the 2016 national championships when the girls were selected in a 30 player development squad that went on to compete at the 2016 International Friendship Series in Blacktown. Their efforts at that event, combined with continued good form at the 2017 19 & Under national championships then secured their spot in the final line-up for the world championships. Both girls are under no illusions, they might have earned a berth in the green and gold but the real work starts now. “If we thought it was hard before, it will only get harder now,” Amber said. And Georgia, who is currently the second fastest pitcher at Under 19 level in Australia, needs to continue to build her strength in an effort to build that speed even more. The best pitchers in the world are hitting the 110-115kmh mark and Georgia is consistently around the 105kmh mark. “I just have to keep working on my weight training and getting my speed up,” Georgia said. The news comes hot on the heels of what has been a stellar season for both

the Hood sisters and three other South East based softballers – Imogene Walker; Montanna Millard and Mackenzie Millard. Amber and Georgia were both selected in the A Grade Team of the Year in the South Australian Softball League; Georgia was named the Softball SA Junior Athlete of the Year and also the Under 19 South Australian MVP from the national championships. Georgia also finished third in the South Australian Softball League A Grade best & fairest – polling 24 votes, having played only half the season, and finishing

only seven votes shy of the winner. The girls played for Seacombe in the Adelaide based State league and finished the season in fourth in A Grade, having lost the 1st semi final to eventual competition runner up Glenelg. But there was silverware for Georgia in the 17 & Under competition, where she was team mates with Imogen and Montanna. The trio was part of the premiership winning Seacombe team that won the title decider 5-1. Montanna patrolled right field; Imogen played third base, while Georgia, who played first base for the majority of the season, took to the mound and pitched. Georgia hit a home run that also scored a team mate in a match Seacombe took control of early and never relinquished it. They scored three runs in the first dig and while the opposition replied with a single run, they never rally threatened to score again, while Seacombe crossed the plate two more times, once, courtesy of Imogen advancing a runner to third with a well placed ground ball. Montanna was also involved in some key plays. Heading into the grand final, Seacombe had only beaten their opponents once but saved their best for last. In a twist of irony, Georgia was not expected to play as she was supposed to be at the final selection camp for the Australian Youth team, but the East Coast’s wild weather saw that event cancelled and she was a late call up and made the most of it. Montanna and Mackenzie were also part of the 15 & Under team that finished runner up in what is being hailed the best grand final seen across all ages in many years at the West Beach Softball SA headquarters. All five girls represented South Australia across a number of age groups in the past 12 months. cont. page 33

NEW TERRITORY FOR DANCE TEACHER Rehearsals are well underway for the eight celebrities taking part in the 2017 Swinging With The Stars – the major annual fundraiser for the Stand Like Stone Foundation. Each week in the lead up to the June 24 gala event, Lifestyle1 will touch base with each celebrity as they look to learn the dances, sew on sequins and raise funds for their chosen charities. This week, we catch up with Mount Gambier High School’s Samara Greer. Samara Greer is the dance teacher at Mount Gambier High School. In her second year at the school, she has invigorated the school’s dance program and at a glance is the most eminently qualified of all the contestants in the 2017 Swinging With The Stars. But Samara’s background is belly dancing and that is not one of the genres, Hype’s Kim Cella is teaching the class of 2017 ahead of the June 24 competition. In fact, despite having dabbled in a number of genres over the journey, ballroom is not one of those so Samara has entered the 2017 event as clueless as anyone. “I was really young when I started belly dancing,” Samara said. “My mum thought it would be a really good idea. I started when I was four or five and lived it and continued it through.” That was 16 years ago and when she moved to Mount Gambier in 2016 for this teaching opportunity, which sees her teaching Year 9-12 dance; Year 8 art & design and Year 10 & 11 media, she brought that expertise with her and has run classes.

parties and even was part of the Rolling Stones Aussie tour but never with judges in wait and a trophy on the line. Samara is raising funds for the Mount Gambier High School Scholarship Fund. She has some major fundraisers, including workshops and performances, on the horizon. Just as her passion for dancing developed at a young age, so did her desire to be a teacher. “I think I’ve always had a bit of a passion for teaching – particularly high school,” Samara said. “I had some really good high school teachers and I wanted to do the same for others.” Samara boasts a double degree from Flinders University – a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts. Samara’s first exposure to the Stand Like Stone Foundation fundraiser was last year when colleague Steven Speck

was part of the celebrity pack. “He did a fantastic job and I was watching in the crowd and thought I want to do this,” Samara said. The challenge for Samara will be dancing with a partner. “I’ve never done that before,” she said. Belly dancing is obviously a solo style and even in her jazz and contemporary work she has never partnered up. “I think people expect that I’ve already done these styles (ballroom) as well but I haven’t and am looking forward to the challenge,” Samara said. It is also the first time Samara has danced competitively. She has done Fringe shows, performed countless times at weddings and anniversary

beers and local produce hosted by TV comedy sensation Jackson Tozer, who returned home to MC the event. The opening weekend of the tuna fishing competition also hit the ground running, with Hamilton man Tony Jones claiming the heaviest catch with an 18.1kg haul earning a $500 cash prize. The Sunday competition was forced to be cancelled due to high winds and rough seas. Fishing will continue every weekend for the rest of April with anglers vying for more than $12,000 in prize money. Fishing lure expert Peter Pakula from Pakula Tackle Australia will headline this weekend’s festivities hosting a free presentation at the Portland Yacht Club from 5.30pm on Saturday directly after

the day’s weigh-ins. Pakula Lures have won many of the game fishing world’s most prestigious tournaments, including the largest Yellowfin (91 kg) and largest Blue Marlin (297 kg) every caught in Australian waters. The Portland Hooked on Tuna Fest is proudly supported by the Portland Lions Club, Portland Sports Fishing Club and Fisheries Victoria. AUTHOR SET TO TELL HOW HER BOOK BECAME A MOVIE Rosalie Ham, author of the modern Australian classic The Dressmaker, will be appearing at the Glenelg Libraries

later this month for an author event. Ham will present at both the Portland and Casterton libraries on April 22 as

a part of the State Library of Victoria’s High Road to Reading Program. Ham will discuss the process of her debut novel The Dressmaker being turned into a hit film starring Kate Winslet, Judy Davis and Liam Hemsworth. The Dressmaker is a bittersweet, comedy-drama set in 1950s Australia. Protagonist Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) is a beautiful and talented misfit, who after working as a dressmaker in Parisian fashion houses, returns home to her middle-of-nowhere town to right her wrongs. Since writing her first novel, The Dressmaker, Ham has produced two other titles including Summer at Mount Hope and There Should Be More Dancing. Event attendees will also have the chance to hear what upcoming plans she has in store with her writing. Ham currently resides in Melbourne and, when she is not writing, teaches literature. She holds a Bachelor in Education and a Master of Arts in

TO THE BAT CAVE

People keen to experience the mystery and marvel of Australian bats are invited by Natural Resources South East and Friends of Naracoorte Caves to a free Bat Night at the Naracoorte Caves on April 20. Creative Writing. Rosalie Ham will be at the Casterton Library between 10-11am and the Portland Library between 2-3pm. The Portland event will be followed by a screening of the film, giving readers the full book verses film experience. Bookings are essential. To secure your place at either event please contact Glenelg Libraries on (03)5522 2265 or email library@glenelg.vic.gov.au. Above - Renowned author Rosalie Ham will visit Portland and Casterton to discuss the process of her novel, The Dressmaker, being turned into a hit film. Left - A scene from the movie starring Liam Hemsworth & Kate Winslet.

Along with thousands of friendly bats, guests will be entertained and educated by “batgirl” Emmi Scherlies - a bat expert who is conducting research into the critically endangered Southern bentwing bat. Natural Resources South East Bush Management Advisor Abigail Goodman said seeing thousands of bats flying out of Bat Cave is a really special and unique experience. “It will be wonderful to have someone with Emmi’s experience come and share their knowledge,” Dr Goodman said. “It’s a rare opportunity to listen to first-hand experience in scientific research.” Ms Scherlies is researching why the number of bats in the Naracoorte Caves is not increasing, despite many pups being born each year. The Southern bent-wing bat is one of just five mammals on Australia’s critically endangered list; the final classification before extinction. The World Heritage Listed Naracoorte Caves is an extremely important home for the tiny bats, which measure just over 50mm, weigh just 15 grams, and easily fit in the palm of a hand. Bat Night attendees will learn how researchers use thermal cameras and tracking to count bats, why the Naracoorte Caves Bat Caves is crucial for the Southern bent-wing bat, and what is being done to prevent extinction of the species. Numbers are limited, RSVP essential. For further information and to RSVP contact Natural Resources South East on (08)87351177 or email abigail.goodman@sa.gov.au

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - A SAD DAY FOR OUR CIVILISATION... By ROBBIE TANSEL I saw this sticker on something recently. See if you can guess what it was attached to. “This product is manufactured with pride from quality materials. The high gloss surface finish is attractive, easy to clean and sanitary. We recommend that it be cleaned with soap and warm water only and then dried with a soft cloth. The product can be damaged by chemical or abrasive cleaners. If the product is accidently splashed with cleaning chemicals, wipe immediately.” Did you guess a toilet? That’s right, a dunny (I haven’t used that word for so long!) I was at a café in Melbourne and I read this sticker attached to the toilet. Don’t ask me why I was reading a sticker attached to a toilet. I told Donna about it. I said, “You won’t believe what they do in Melbourne. They clean their toilets.” And then I laughed and laughed. At that point she said, “I clean our toilet. I do it at least

once a week.” I won’t lie. I was a bit surprised. I said, “If I had have known that I would have been more careful all these years.” I followed that up with, “I never cleaned the toilet before you moved in.” She then told me she was aware of it and that was why she had a new toilet installed when she moved in. I just thought we needed a new one because mine was a men’s toilet and with her in the house we’d need a unisex one. You live and you learn. This is the point we’ve reached as a society though. We don’t have enough intelligence to work out how to clean a toilet. Toilet manufacturers are now directing us as to how we should clean the products we poo and wee into! Our number ones and twos are fine coming into contact with the porcelain, but if we use bleach we might ruin the finish. Consider also the language the manufacturer used to describe their toilets. They make them with “pride” for starters. I’m going to their toilet factory to watch those satisfied toilet makers walk out at the end of the day with pride on their faces. “We

made some great toilets today, everyone. Great work. I think there’s some people who are really going to enjoy emptying their bowels and bladders into these. Give yourselves a big pat on the back. Remember, you all get to come back tomorrow and do this again!” Cue enthusiastic applause and cheering. As if that’s not enough, they used “quality materials”. In other words they got the good porcelain out. No cheap, crappy porcelain for their customers. They used that pride and quality material to produce an “attractive, glossy surface”. It’s a toilet! To be honest, I’m looking forward to when they bring out the matte finish toilets. I am a bit worried that they haven’t given enough detail as to how to clean the toilet though. Like what soap should we use? I’m guessing it would need to be fancy Dove soap with moisturiser inside. Home brand is sure to be a big no no. And what temperature should the warm water be. Is there a possibility of damage if it’s a degree or two too hot? Is there a brand of soft cloth that should be used? Back up a minute. Surely, even if you’re

ernment will impose a If elected, Troy Bell and a Marshall Liberal Gov

one of those clean freaks who cleans your toilet (weirdo), you don’t then dry it as well? What’s next? A soothing massage? I’m surprised they don’t say, “If the product is accidently splashed with cleaning chemicals, call 000 immediately as this is the type of emergency that this phone number was set up for.” The other question I’m left with, is how carefully are they cleaning the toilet for the sticker to still be looking completely untouched? They’re obviously not cleaning that bit of the toilet at all. Consider the germs and bacteria right there. I guess they were concerned that if they took it off they might forget the cleaning instructions and completely ruin the toilet. Shock! Horror! Anyway, I need to go

LENDING A HELPING HAND WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH It was three years ago when Erin Beggs, newly settled in Mount Gambier, organised the city’s first Share the Dignity drive, and she and the Mount Gambier campaign haven’t looked back. Share the Dignity is a volunteer run organisation that focuses on helping women escaping domestic violence. One of its major campaigns, which run

in both April and August each year, is collection of feminine hygiene products – the least donated goods but the first taken when women seek help from community organisations. The other is in December, when a campaign collecting handbags is run, ensuring the women get a gift at a time of the year when they usually sacrifice their own needs for gifts for children. Erin jumped on board the cause when she was 8 1 5 working casually and had extra 4 3 time on her hands. “Posts about Share 7 9 3 the Dignity kept 7 1 6 4 coming up on my facebook,” Erin said. 6 8 “And I’m a believer 7 that things happen for a reason and I 1 7 9 thought it had to keep appearing 3 2 on my facebook 8 for a reason. I was relatively new to

Campaign, which is now in its third year. “It has exploded,” she said. “My tiny three bedroom house is full of the donations I’ve collected and to be honest they come in all year round.” The official collection points in Mount Gambier are Australian hearing Services in Percy Street, Bare Necessities Lingerie in Commercial Street West, and the three Mount Gambier based Chemmart pharmacies – in Wehl Street North; Central Shopping Centre in Helen Street and Sturt Street. The campaign is also unique in that despite being a national movement, the Mount Gambier donations stay in Mount Gambier – everything donated goes to helping local women facing domestic violence issues. “I drop off donations to the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service and ac.care,” Erin said. The current campaign looking for donations of feminine hygiene products runs until the end of April. Mount Gambier and I wanted to give back to the community that had really welcomed me. I also have friends and family that have been in domestic violence situations so it all came together.” Erin has been overwhelmed by the response ever since she launched the first Share the Dignity

Since the official opening Mount Gambier’s Rail Lands at the end of 2015, it has been an evolving project and Mount Gambier City Council has continually looked to the community to ascertain just what was needed for the space to continue to be a vibrant community hub. A Rail Land Activation Team has been in place and they have been working with children, seniors, artists, business operators and all sectors of the community to ensure the Rail Lands are a functional community space for everyone. Community and stakeholder engagement officer Ben Kilsby said 100 site visits with a variety of community stakeholders and even more surveys had been done to explore how the Rail Lands can become an even more integral site for Mount Gambier. “That’s how we initially came up with the opening day and the activities that went on then,” Mr Kilsby said. “And then we kept asking the question of what would it take for people to come back here.” Fitness classes, community fundraisers, car displays and markets have all been suggested and the rail lands have hosted them all. It is also through those consultations that the Oatmill Cinema outdoor cinema program was born and enjoyed huge success, as well as local car yards launching vehicles and having drive days at the iconic Mount Gambier site. Another of the frequent suggestions was the need for provision of food and hospitality on a consistent basis – not just special events. “People were saying they wanted to be able to have a coffee and catch up with friends,” Mr Kilsby said. “To be able to sit and enjoy a picnic and have somewhere to get that food close by.” That saw council call for expressions of interest and Shane and Joanne Gabriel were first in line, having been one of the businesses that had been exploring the possibility since the inception of the Rail Lands project and having since

supported events at the venue. “We were looking for someone to be a pop up trader and work with council to test how something like this will work and if it should be considered in the longer term,” Mr Kilsby said. Sixteen months on, since that process first got underway, and Shane and Joanne Gabriel have officially launched the Dining Car @ the Rail. Two shipping containers are now calling the station platform home for the next six months as the food & hospitality trial underway. Both council and the new operators needed the set up to be relatively low in investment terms and the containers fit the bill, with one set up for the food preparation and onsite baking of the freshly prepared pastries on offer, with the other housing the light meal menu selection, drinks fridge and all important coffee machine, as its service area. Shane and Joanne were a perfect fit for the trial – they already have a successful mobile coffee business meaning they know how to work on the go, and they have also worked hand in hand with local government – they are the owners of Aero Espresso at the Mount Gambier Airport, where they work with the Grant District Council. “We have been involved right from the start of the Rail Lands and we have been talking to the activation team about what we could do here,” Shane said. And the trial is the first step – Mount Gambier City Council getting the trial it needs to assess any long term hospitality business opportunities at the site and Shane and Joanne getting a chance to explore a new business venture. Aside from the bread for the sandwiches on offer, Shane and Joanne make everything themselves and have a strong commitment to local produce. “We source everything we need locally and if we can’t get it in the Limestone Coast we get it from somewhere in South Australia and if we can’t get it there, we don’t use it,” Shane said. And they are hoping now they are up and running, local suppliers that might have products that would suit the new venture will contact them. Dining Car @ The Rail is all about light meals and easy to eat, delicious gourmet meals. There is a range of cakes and pastries, sandwiches and rolls, salads and, of course, Mahalia coffee. “We are also offering a range of gourmet pies with some great flavour combinations that we are making here on site,” Shane said. Shane and Joanne see the venture not just as a hospitality challenge but tourism as well, which is why the local products are so important to the duo. And that fits in the council’s vision as well. “We want the Rail Lands to be a destination,” Mr Kilsby said. “And we want it to be a destination for visitors and locals.” While the business is barely a week old, Shane and Joanne already have a vision for where it will head over the next six months, including the outdoor furniture for patrons, a barbeque set up between the two containers to offer delicious grill dishes, and a liquor licence, which is also in the works but at least a couple of months away. “We are looking forward to developing this business over the winter months before the spring and summer influx which we fully expect,” Shane said. And during that time they will also be reporting to council. “They have made the commitment to share the strengths and weaknesses of the project,” Mr Kilsby said. One of the strengths already revealed is the quality of local trades. “We used all local trades in getting this set up and Mount Gambier has fantastic tradespeople,” Shane said. Shane and Joanne’s agreement with council sees opening hours set at a minimum of 10am-3pm but they are already touting 9am-4pm operating hours with an extension to that once demand is ascertained and the warmer weather returns. Basketball Mount Gambier staged a successful Junior Grand Final Day to conclude one of the best seasons of junior basketball for some time. Increased numbers of divisions, improved standards in play, and refereeing, were highlights of the action packed day. The large crowds of parents and spectators, who continually encouraged and applauded the efforts of the players added to the positive and fun atmosphere of the grand finals. Members of the organising committee worked hard in preparing for the day and were pleased with its overall success. Preliminary plans are already in place for a similar day to conclude the coming winter season. The day opened with Under 12 grand finals. The Fever Under 12 Girls, coached by Felicity Clayton, was a leading team throughout the season and were too strong for Deanna Nulty’s Spirit, who sorely missed the injured Cara Nulty. Excitement marked the efforts of the Under 12 Boys Blue Division participants, Wolves and Bucks. The scores were close throughout with Theresa Paltridge guiding the Wolves to a 17-12 win. The matches in the Under 12 Boys Gold Division were close during the regulation season and carried into the finals series. Coach Ben Brumby led Celtics to a 3 point win over Magic, 42-39. The Under 14 Boys Blue Division final continued the excitement as Suns snared the result from Blazers in the dying seconds, 33-32. Nick Creedy was Coach of the victorious Suns. The Under 14 Boys Gold Division has produced high standard, close and competitive games this season. The grand final was played between second semifinal winner, Jets, and Knicks coached by Nick Thomas. Knicks’ strong win in the preliminary final set them up for a solid grand final showing, led by Jake Walker and Zac Nulty. Aaron Ramsey and Joel Bryant played very well for Jets but Knicks prevailed, 49-41. Bulldogs Under 16 Boys Division 1 team, coached by Steve Reid, has been the bench mark this season and, after a close encounter in the preliminary final, bounced back to easily account for Roos in the final, 41-24. Bulldogs, under the

coaching of Phil McBain, scored a narrow win, 27 -22 over Cougars in the first season of the Under 16 Boys Division 2 competition for many years. First year Under 14 player Alyssa Duncan led her side Capitals, to a 39-30 win against Fire, who had moved into the grand final following a narrow second final win. Capitals managed to turn the table on Fire in the final. Panthers, despite missing players, accounted for pre-match favourite, Roos in the Under 16 Girls’ final. Panthers managed to open up an unexpected lead in the second half through effective execution of offence. Leading scorers were Emily Close for Panthers and Sarah Nulty for Roos. Roos Women were clearly the best team in the Junior Women’s competition and showed that form in the final to defeat Cougars 26-12. Winning Coach Liz Noble-Hines commended the players on their approach of having fun and playing with friends. Bulldogs Junior Men showed obvious improvement in the latter weeks of the season under the guidance of Simon Berkefeld and carried this form into the final against Roos to score a narrow 4 point win, 29-25. It was pleasing to see the large crowd of spectators supporting the players and enjoying the close contest. The day finished on an exciting note when Bulldogs Under 18 Men, coached by Matt Berkefeld nudged minor premier Roos out by 2 points, 52-50. Leading scorers for Bulldogs were Todd Reid and Shaun Lock while Brodie Jolley and Caleb Backmann led the way for Roos. The 2017 Winter season begins in the week of Monday, May 1. Under 10, 12 and 14 players and friends are encouraged to register online and club team players are also required to register online with club teams. LOCAL SPORT SOFTBALL STARS MAKING THEIR MARK From page 4 And there must be something in the water in the Limestone Coast because the region has another sister act in Montanna and Mackenzie Millard – that duo also playing their domestic softball in Adelaide in the 2016/17 season with Seacombe as well. Inspired by mum Kelly, Montanna took up softball five and a half years ago and Mackenzie a year later. The girls have slowly honed their skills through State representative action, as well as the shift to playing competitively in Adelaide. Montanna was part of the gold medal winning SAPSASA team at the Pacific Games in 2015 and has been part of Softball SA’s State development teams in the past two years. Mackenzie made her State debut in SAPSASA competition last year and is in the throes of trialling for State selection as we speak as she starts to move up the age groups. Montanna is also US bound this year after successfully applying for a 10 day tour in June, which is being run through Sportslink International and has Softball Australia’s stamp of approval. The experience will be incredible for the rising star’s development as she gains access to national level coaches in the US and a higher level of training and competition. The tour fits perfectly into Montanna’s long term plans of securing a scholarship and playing softball in the United States. “I will get to play in front of college scouts and will learn so much,” Montanna said. Of course as any parent of a regionally based budding sports star will tell you, fulfilling these dreams don’t just take hard work but cash as well, and Montanna has a GoFundMe page set up and can be contacted via her or her mother Kelly’s facebook pages.

There is no doubt the move to playing in Adelaide has paid dividends for the teenagers, who got their start with Demons in the Mount Gambier Softball League. “The decision to play in Adelaide was a hard one but as both of us eally wanted to represent South Australia so we thought we would get known more being seen playing each week,” Montanna said. “The close friendship we had already made at Seacombe help make the decision easier.” Learning from different coaches and adjusting to different styles of umpiring has helped develop the girls’ games. Montanna has been playing mainly catcher and also third base, while Mackenzie has fielded at short stop as well as pitching. “I have learnt that my size and age doesn’t matter and I can match it with the other players,” Mackenzie said. Montanna was part of the Seacombe 17 & under premiership winning team with former Warriors alumni Georgia Hood and Imogen Walker, and Montanna and Mackenzie also played in the runner up Seacombe team in the 15 & under competition. Left - 17 & Under premiership team mates Imogen Walker & Georgia Hood. Below - Mackenzie & Montanna Millard. Mackenzie was part of Seacombe’s 15 & under runner up team, while Montanna was part of that team and the victorious 17 & Under team. She is now US bound for a development tour in June.

QUEENS OF THE GREENS

Millicent Bowling Club’s ladies triples team, having already survived a marathon final to defeat Port MacDonnell, to take the Lower South East title, backed that performance up earlier this month by taking out the Regional Champion of Champions held at the Naracoorte RSL. The team included Merle Stevens, Judy Saint and Dawn Bellman. Above - Club, Association & Regional Triples Champions Dawn Bellman, Merle Stevens & Judy Saint
