Tyrendarra Show 100th Anniversary Saturday 11th February See page 3

COMING EVENTS

100TH ANNIVERSARY TYRENDARRA SHOW COMING UP SOON The small southwestern Victorian town of Tyrendarra is very proud to be holding its 100th anniversary show on February 11. This is a huge achievement for this small farming community, and plans are underway to ensure it is a bumper show! The Tyrendarra Show started as a “festival held by the local Red Cross Society and has developed into the popular, well-respected event it is today. Over the years, events have been added and removed, but the basics remain the same – a wonderful opportunity to showcase the agricultural sector and compete with peers. Perhaps the most important function of a show, such as that at Tyrendarra, is it provides an opportunity for people to catch up on all the news, and the upcoming 100th show will be no exception. Families of current residents and former residents are

coming from far and wide for this very special occasion. For the first time, the show will continue into the evening with several not-to- be-missed attractions. The Wairere Romney Speed Shear 2017 kicks off at 4.30pm. There are open and intermediate events in this event with great prize money. The “shear, scoff & scull novelty event is a very popular part of the Speed Shear. For more information on this contact Butch Down on 0417 596 846. here are limited entries for this event. Eyes will be on the oval around 7pm for the Tyrendarra Obstacle Showcase Under Lights for horses and riders. This event will be a lot of fun. The event will involve one element of the Tyrendarra Stockman’s Challenge - the remainder to be held at the showground the day after the show. The Obstacle Showcase will involve fastest times and execution of the course by horse and rider and will have an Over the Years theme. Again entries will be limited, with entrance fee $20 (total prize money $1000). There will also be a demonstration of whip cracking on the evening of show day. Dean Outram, a local singer/guitar player will provide some great listening music in the evening also. In the evening, around 5pm, there will be another great attraction – a 20th Century fashion parade with a selection of garments held in the Dorothy Nichol Fashion Collection. Dorothy lives in Lismore, Victoria, and since the 1980s has been on a one-woman crusade to document the social history of western

Victoria through gowns worn by the farmers’ wives and townies at special occasions in the early to mid-20th century. Dorothy has journeyed far and wide to hunt down these glorious treasures (including hats, shoes and even the odd safari suit!) where possible documenting the story of each. Take a journey back in time as you watch our local models display these fascinating garments. During the day there will, of course, be lots of attractions & great entertainment. In keeping with our historical theme, Preston’s Historic Punch & Judy puppet show will give three performances during show day. Punch & Judy came to Australia in the 1840s and has continued to entertain young and old audiences ever since. George the Farmer will also be at the 100th Tyrendarra Show (morning only). George the Farmer is Australia’s best-loved farming character. Since he was first launched in July 2014 as an interactive story app, the George the Farmer brand, subsequent products and performances have won national awards. George the Farmer aims to educate Australian children about farming practices and how food and fibre (natural fabrics) are produced. Norm & Elsie’s Art Safari caravan is a mobile art gallery in a vintage caravan, filled with art & artefacts from SouthWest Victoria. “Red vs Blue (from “Made in Natimuk) are bike puppets powered by pedal power (from the crowd) and create much interest. “The Connies will be roaming around the ground –

this is a collective of tram conductors, performers, educators, ecologists & nature lovers who entertain, educate and inform, creating and distributing beautifully crafted collectable swapcards that bring environmental, social, historic & cultural themes to the community. Brandon Kroon will be doing his amazing chainsaw carving throughout the day. All the old favourites will be there – horses, cattle, sheep, art, farm and garden, cut flowers, floral arranging, craft, fancy work, home brew, wool, cookery, photography, historical (theme this year “memorabilia), Junior Show Kids, Show & Shine Utes, vintage machinery and cars, pet and scarecrow competitions, poultry, pigeons, dog high jump, bucking bull, petting nursery, alpaca shearing, face painting and much more!! There will also be a display of the Lighthorse. A day not to be missed! Look at the website www. tyrendarraagriculturalshow.com.au or ring Show Secretary Robyn Nunn on 0427 295 271 for more information.

SELFLESS VOLUNTEERS EARN AUSTRALIA DAY RECOGNITION As it is across all council areas in the Limestone Coast, Naracoorte Lucindale Council had a strong list of contenders

for its Australia Day honours. When it comes to volunteering the resume of Naracoorte Citizen of the Year

Daphne Burford is as diverse as it is impressive. Daphne was honoured for her many years of volunteering with the Naracoorte Historic Vehicle Club, Naracoorte Novita Auxiliary, Naracoorte Red Cross Branch and Naracoorte Branch of Meals on Wheels. Lucindale Citizen of the Year Carol Miller is also one of those community members who rolls up her sleeves for a number of local organisations. Carol was honoured for her years of service through the South Australia Ambulance Service, the school and kindergarten and many community groups in Lucindale. After

more than two decades of pastoral care work, Trevor Barnett picked up a Certificate of Appreciation. Working at Naracoorte High School, Trevor’s contribution to young lives has gone way beyond his role and has extended to parents and families of those needing his help. Naracoorte Young Citizen of the Year was Nicole Mugford, honoured for her work with the district’s youth. Nicole is the Naracoorte Primary School pastoral care worked and coordinates many youth events in Naracoorte, working side by side with the region’s young people in a variety

of circumstances. The Community Event of the Year for Naracoorte was the Resilience Project, led by the Naracoorte High School, and financially supported by local businesses and organisations. It was the first time the Melbourne based Resilience Project headed to the Limestone Coast with a series of workshops for parents, teachers and students focussing on youth mental health. The Resilience Project has developed and facilitated programs for more than 300 schools Australia wide and works with every NRL club and a handful of AFL clubs.

JAYCEE RECOGNISED FOR HEALTH PROMOTION EFFORTS One of Glenelg Shire Council’s kindergartens has received formal recognition for their efforts in promoting sun safety and physical activity as part of a state-wide achievement program. Jaycee Kindergarten, in Portland, recently received two icons as part of the Victorian Government’s Achievement Program, one for Physical Activity and another for Sun Protection. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy, as Jaycee is the first kindergarten in the Glenelg Shire cluster to receive any icons in the Achievement Program. Glenelg Shire Council children’s services manager Janine Johnstone said that this was another accomplishment for Jaycee, and reaffirms to families that they have access to quality care and education services. “This milestone at Jaycee Kindergarten further reinforces

the wonderful children’s programs we have on offer in the Glenelg Shire,” she said. “Families can have the utmost confidence when enrolling their child that they will be educated in

an environment which is committed to health promotion, and has been recognised for these long-standing efforts.” The Achievement Program is a Healthy Together Victoria initiative that aims to encourage healthier lifestyles and prevent lifestyle related diseases. Participating schools, early childhood services and workplaces are guided through a framework of continuous planning, action and review to address eight health priority areas. Once the school, service provider or workplace achieves the benchmarks set for the health priority area, they are eligible to receive an icon. Jaycee Kindergarten was awarded with a Sun Protection icon for their best practice approach to sun safety and a continuous commitment to educating children on the importance on protecting themselves from the sun. They were also recognised with a Physical Activity icon for their efforts in increasing the levels of physical activity offered at the service, and in doing so, the flow on effects to the community.Ms Johnstone expects to see other kindergartens in the Glenelg Shire cluster to soon receive the same formal recognition for their efforts in encouraging healthy lifestyles. “All of our kindergartens are dedicated to health promotion and creating a safe environment for all, so it won’t be long before all of our services have an icon, or multiple icons, affixed to their signs,” she said. Above - Jaycee Kindergarten staff stand with their sign which now features two icons.

ALWAYS WILLING TO LEND A HELPING HAND Alan Balshaw has been helping people all his life. The 2017 Mount Gambier Australia Day Citizen of the Year made

a career out of it and in retirement he continues to give back to the community through volunteering. Born

and bred in Mount Gambier, he did venture out of the region courtesy of some job opportunities but eventually found his way back after he was married – that was almost five decades ago. Alan’s first job out of school was working at Woolworths, an extension of what had been a part time role, working in both the Mount Gambier and Millicent stores. His Woolworths career was punctuated by two years of national service and he also worked in retail, running his own business for a short time. Alan’s volunteering dates back to those early days, when he trained as a St John volunteer. “It was about that time that the ambulance service was going through a big period of change and was looking for more full time staff,” Alan said. “The demand was becoming so great that they couldn’t use volunteers. I was asked if I would like to take up the opportunity and I did.” It led to a lifetime of training and more than two decades in the role. “I did think coming from St John it would be a fairly easy pathway but I soon realised how wrong I was,” Alan said. “I realised what I knew wasn’t much at all.” Rigorous training, given the ever evolving world of medicine and emergency care, was ongoing through his 23 years and he can look back to treatments he used to use that have long been discarded as best practice. “Even within the ambulance service you now have different levels and roles with paramedics, intensive care paramedics and specialist roles. It is great for the public, the care they get from the first

medics on the scene.” It was Alan’s health that eventually saw him step away from his ambulance service role. “The SA Ambulance Service was great to me during that two years when I was not well. They really looked after me during my treatment and during that whole period they were brilliant with their support,” he said. “And while I had started thinking about retirement,

that time away from the job gave me a chance to really think about my future.” Alan was 60 when his health issues reared their head and in the end, stepping away seemed the best option. “It did make it an easier transition from work to retirement.” Already a volunteer in the ambulance service training sector, working in centres like Penola, Kingston and Robe, Alan was destined to increase his volunteer work and he recently clocked up a decade of service with Vinnies. “Doing something like Vinnies was something I had been thinking about,” Alan said. “I started out doing one or two days a week just lending a hand.” That quickly grew and he currently lends a hand four or five days a week and has held high ranking roles at local, regional and State level. A common theme among volunteers who get unsolicited accolades is the generosity of the Mount Gambier community and Alan shares that admiration. “One of the joys of being involved in the welfare sector is you see all the organisations, like the service clubs and schools, as well as other welfare agencies and the support they provide to the overall welfare needs of the town,” he said. “They way everyone shares resources, they way people are happy to contribute. I don’t think you could find a better place in Australia than Mount Gambier, where people are always willing to help. And I often see people that we’ve helped, digging into their pockets to help meet a local need.” Above - 2017 Australia Day Citizen of the Year (Mount Gambier) Alan Balshaw with Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee.

NUMBER ONE RANKING FOR RISING KARTING TALENT The past two years have shown the karting world that young Mount Gambier based driver Kai Allen, now 11,

has some serious talent. His resume is already impressive as he sets himself for a season where he will face a new

challenge, testing himself by competing in the 16 & Under category despite still being eligible to race in the 12 & Under category – the category in which he emerged as the 2016 Cadet 12 Australian Champion. And it appears one of the sport’s premier publications – Kart Oz Magazine – agrees. The popular karting magazine publishes an annual list of the top 50 karters across all age groups and not only did Kai rate a mention – he was named number one. On the back of his national championship, his award for claiming the most number of pole positions, his second placing in the Rotax National ProTour and his ticket to the 2017 Rok

Cup International Final in Italy this October – the number one ranking proved to be icing on the cake. “It’s exciting and I’m proud of what I have achieved,” Kai said. “It will be great to go to Italy and I am also hoping that I will get to go overseas and do a complete series some time down the track.” Kai admits the secret to racing successfully is concentrating on each lap but also planning ahead. “I just keep trying to do my best and I am really looking forward to racing in a new category this year.” Below - Mount Gambier’s Kai Allen has been named the number one driver in Australian karting.

STRESS, ANXIETY, INSOMNIA, TRAUMATIC MEMORIES, RELATIONSHIP BREAKDOWNS, PHYSICAL PAIN, ADDICTIONS, FEARS, PHOBIAS AND COMPULSIONS…...you can now access a remarkable new technique here in Mount Gambier - it’s called Havening. The treatment uses a combination of pyschosensory techniques and touch to permanently remove these traumas and emotions that have been encoded in the brain. Once removed, they can never come back. This powerful technique is based on Neuroscience and the latest research in this field, to provide the cutting edge in removal of symptoms of stress held in the body and the brain. This method releases the upsetting memory thus the negative effects are removed from the psyche and body. The process carries no known side effects and can be applied to a large variety of conditions. This has been successfully used to treat physical pain, symptoms of stress, anxiety, PTSD, anger, low self esteem, depression, phobias, fears and more. The founder of Havening, a New York Dr and Neuroscientist, Dr Ronald Ruden M.D. Ph.D, has been working with patients in New York

successfully treating emotional and physical suffering using this method over the past 15 years. The Havening Centre- Australia is open for consultations. The Practitioner, Catherine Yates is a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Kinesiologist and Medical Herbalist and has clinics in Mount Gambier, Melbourne and Sydney. ADVERTORIAL - BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT ...PLANT A TREE Happy New Year... and hasn’t it been an interesting one so far. The cool

weather has been great for gardening and has given us plenty of opportunity

to get outside and do some outdoor entertaining. So, too, have we been given the opportunity to look around the garden and see where we can add some much needed shade from that harsh summer sun we have been having and what better a time after all that wonderful rain which has certainly restored the planting spirit, we have been rushed off our feet since reopening after Christmas. We always think to winter to plant trees, especially deciduous trees, but the opportunity is not there to see exactly what part of the garden and home requires shading. I know I have just contemplated planting some more trees on the west side to cut the summer sun on the windows and help cool the rooms on that side. Trees have an amazing ability to be our own air conditioning and studies have shown the cooling effects of lawns and plants in so many ways and trees are amazing at reducing the temperatures and cutting out the harsh rays of the sun. Now is a good time to have a look around and even plant a mature or advanced shade tree. These come in many forms from evergreen, giving all year round shading, to deciduous, where the leaves will drop in winter to give added light. Deciduous trees again, come in many forms, from mop tops, where the size is governed by the grafting and variety, so are good for courtyard shade and smaller spaces right throughout, to lightly foliaged trees, such as silver birch, then to larger, heavily foliaged shade trees such as maples and planes that can give fantastic shading to large and small areas. We currently grow more than 30 varieties of mop top trees at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees. Most of these are in our Summer Shade sale that is running NOW. Remember, too, that many of the older varieties of larger trees you may have been used to are now available in (dwarf) smaller or narrower versions, allowing you to have your old favourites in smaller situations. Shade trees, hedges and especially fruit trees have been selling well since Christmas and now is a good time to plant as there is the whole growing season ahead of us. Look out for our 2017 releases of fruit trees and we have an Orchard Starter special on with any four advanced fruit trees for $145 on our coupon offer (see facing page). Many of our advanced and semi mature trees have been

slashed to half price to make room for more stock coming through. These include Lipstick Maples, Golden Elms, Liquidambars, ash, elm and even half price mop top trees. If you are looking to plant a driveway or avenue of trees we have ½ price on ornamental pears, in both the narrow, upright forms as well as more spreading varieties. So, if you are looking for a bargain and some instant sized trees, now is the time to get in as they are selling fast and we have limited numbers of one metre high plus Pittosporum Silver Sheens for just $19.95, but be quick as the sale has been on for a week now. Citrus, avocadoes, (inc. dwarf ) and even berry fruits can be planted now for crops in late summer and autumn. We have 50% off selected advanced fruit trees already in fruit for that “instant orchard” and more than $35 off miniature peaches and nectarines, in both yellow and white flesh varieties. The newly released dwarf plum varieties have been very sought after for their compact growth but abundance of fruit are now reduced to clear, not many people realise that these new breeds of dwarf tree produce as much fruit as a full sized tree but can be netted more easily and pruned from the ground. All are ideal for pots. Several containers of pots have just arrived at The Pot Shop’s Mount Gambier store, with a huge range of glazed pots in new colours, and antique terracotta in many styles along with stone and Barnacle pots that look as though they have come from under the sea. Terracotta is ever popular and a whole new range at some rather interestingly low prices, at up to 70% off, has just been added to the sale. The mighty strength of the Australian dollar when we purchased has allowed us to sell pots cheaper than five years ago and our outdoor furniture ranges are around $1000 less than last

year. All concrete statues, ornaments and birdbaths, giftware and wall art are reduced to clear with up to 70% off prices, this includes our driftwood from the Philippines and metal oil drum animals, eskies etc. All concrete ware/ lightweight concrete ware, including troughs, large square and round tubs, are included, these are ideal for miniature fruit trees and dwarf citrus varieties, as they can last their entire life without transplanting, especially important with citrus trees, who resent root disturbance and we have minimum 25% off citrus, including double grafted citrus. Gardenarium and The Pot Shop also carries a wide range of solid teak garden furniture which has in the past been out of most peoples price range. With our direct importing we have brought prices right back to less than the flurry of Asian hardwoods that you see looking good in the showroom one minute and warping, cracking and splitting the next. Cast aluminium, which is corrosion free and lightweight, is great for chairs, especially with older people. These are also ideally suited to coastal areas. Our tiled top tables, solid sandstone tiled top tables, pale travertine topped and new for this year is our Majorca 2 range has been a huge hit, and being natural stone has veining of browns through as well which will match in with many colour schemes. We still have one eight seater square table and a few rectangular tables in the Roman range to clear all at fantastic prices, with the 3 metre long banquet table seating 12-14 people, a serious entertainers table,(see website for details) in both stone and aluminium. Grab your truck, trailer or ute and head in to gardenarium & Limestone Coast Advanced Trees now and bag a bargain. By Calum Haygarth
