HANLON PARK TO GET NEW CHANGEROOMS Construction is due to begin on Hanlon Park’s new netball change facilities in the coming months following calls for tenders for construction The $290,000 courtside development includes home and opposition change facilities each with two toilets and two showers, umpire change facility, in addition to office space, a first aid area, and storeroom. The building is to be enclosed by a large verandah to provide additional shelter for players and spectators. Tenders are now being called and due to close on 29 September 2016 with construction expected to begin in December. The Portland Football Netball Club received a $100,000 Female Friendly Facilities Grant from the State Government for the project, in addition to a $140,000 Glenelg Shire Council grant. The club has committed $50,000 to the project following tireless fundraising efforts. The Female Friendly grants program is a direct initiative of the Victorian inquiry into Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation, administered by Sport and Recreation Victoria. Glenelg Shire Council CEO Greg

Burgoyne said council’s contribution was in recognition of the importance of promoting and enhancing the participation of females in sport recreation activities and assisted in addressing inequities in provision of facilities and opportunities for females. “The Portland Football Netball Club has up to 250 players, officials and scorers at each home game, in addition to the large number of supporters, he said. “Players have been forced to change in the cramped change rooms in the football club house, which are the former male public toilets. These amenities have no showers and only two toilets, providing little privacy for players. “These new change facilities are modern, spacious and will provide the club’s 12 netball teams with their own place to change after their home games. “Council is proud to support this important development which will further enhance this sporting area, hopefully attracting more finals and events into the future. It is anticipated works will be completed in time for the 2017 Hampden Football Netball League season.

SUSTAINABILITY FUND ESTABLISHED Do you or someone you know have a bright idea to use innovation and creativity to help the environment, push the boundaries and make a difference in the community? The City of Mount Gambier is calling for individuals and groups residing/located within the city who would like to establish small-scale projects that are innovative and create positive environmental, social and economic benefits for the community. Up to $5000 for each application is being offered.

HISTORY MAKERS History was made not once but twice at this year’s Western Border football grand finals with not only the first female boundary umpire earning a gig, but the first female goal umpire also getting a call up on grand final for the first time in the league’s history. Twenty year old Chelsea McKinnon, who only returned to umpiring this year, was the boundary umpire, taking her place in the A Grade final, while 15 year old goal umpire Portia Holdman, adjudicated in the Under 15 title decider and it was actually the day before she turned 15. Chelsea had spent a couple of years boundary umpiring while she was deciding if she wanted to continue playing netball “In the end I did both, Chelsea said. She developed to the point she played A Grade for Hobitz and she had a break from the umpiring but this season, the lure of the football field proved too strong and she returned to running the boundary and working on her skills to the point she secured the A Grade grand final appointment. The South East Football Umpires League trains twice a week and for Chelsea, she used to make the Tuesday night session. “We do running, throw ins and go over some of the rules, Chelsea said. “I do think about umpiring at the next level but I would need to get a lot fitter. There are kids that have gone from here, like Michael Button, to umpire in Adelaide. Chelsea did her first A Grade game ever this season so when she was announced as part of the 2016 A Grade panel she was shocked and excited. “It was pretty exciting, Chelsea said.

“I thought I might get a B Grade game but to get the A Grade was amazing. Focussed on joining the police force, Chelsea is not sure, what next, in terms of her umpiring but working on her fitness works for both pursuits. “I really did enjoy the game on Saturday – it was great to be a part of it, she said. “I would really encourage others who would like to try something a little different, improve their fitness, meet new people or work with others as a team, to give football umpiring a go. You don’t need to be a football player, know all the rules inside out or be the fastest runner to be part of it because being a field, boundary or goal umpire all require different skills and knowledge of the game. And Portia can attest to that. She saw a notice at school looking for football umpires and thought it looked like a fun thing to try. “One of my mates was doing it as well so I decided to give it a go, she said. “I used to be into footy when I was younger and I still like having a kick with my mates. But I’m not huge on running so I decided to give goal umpiring a go. Portia looks to attend at least one training a week and she is determined to keep working on her skills behind

the goals. “It’s heaps of fun and doing the grand final was really fun, Portia said. “I’ve never done a game with so many cars around, and so much cheering and when you signal a goal, there were so many more car horns going off. I am hoping to convince more of my friends to come out and give it a go. The duo also felt that gender wasn’t an issue with players, officials of spectators. “I would encourage other girls to get involved as it can be very rewarding and all the male umpires are encouraging and supportive towards female umpires, Chelsea said. A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF AN AFL DEBUTANTE It’s been a huge 12 months for Mason Redman but one thing’s for sure – it has only strengthened his desire to work hard and develop his career as an AFL footballer. Drafted almost 12 months ago at pick 30, it has all been a bit of a blur. All but two clubs had met, in some form, with the former Millicent footballer prior to the national draft, so while you can never be sure, there was a good chance he would be picked up. “The night before the draft I went out for a couple of drinks with my manager and he kept mentioning Collingwood,” Mason said. “He must’ve mentioned them eight or nine times.” But in the end, Essendon got in first and it was a decision that didn’t surprised Mason and he was looking forward to becoming a Bomber. “I got on really well with their recruiter Merv Keane,” Mason said. “Every time he was in Adelaide he would message me and we would catch up for coffee. “

Mason admits he was still nervous on draft night and before the coverage started, which he watched with his family at his Auntie’s house in Adelaide, where he had been living while playing for Glenelg, he went into his room and was overwhelmed by how his life was potentially about to change. And when his name was read out, things did change, and quickly. He had two days to pack up and say goodbye to his life in Adelaide. “Wow, I was an AFL footballer,” he said. And then just a few months after already uprooting his life from Millicent to Adelaide, Mason was on the move again. None of it was smooth sailing, though. Two months in, 12 of Mason’s Essendon team mates were suspended for 12 months as part of the supplements saga. He admits, having been at the club for such a short time, it probably didn’t impact on the first year recruits, as it did more long standing players. “We’ll never know, but I guess there was a chance I might not have debuted,” Mason said. But debut he did, against Sydney. “I had been playing not too bad in the VFL and the coaches had been telling me I was close,” Mason said. And so the team was announced – in typical Essendon fashion. John Worsfold used to come into the gym where the players were doing a session and read out the team. “You sort of knew if someone was going to be debuting as he (Worsfold) would be followed in by cameras,” Mason

said. The premiership coach has not had a whole lot to do with Mason but that being said, Mason has found the former West Coast Eagles hard man approachable and personable. “His door is always open and he is always happy to talk to you about your game,” Mason said. It is the development coaches at the club that have had the biggest impact on Mason’s first year of AFL. “They are there specifically for the younger players - players in their first to fourth year,” Mason said. Then, of course, there were the main sessions which involved lots of match simulation and working on the game style. “If the press hadn’t worked well, we would work on that, if we were having trouble moving the ball through a press, we would work on that – we just tried to do things as close to match conditions as possible.” Then there were the skills sessions, practising different kinds of kicks, different marking techniques and working on quick hands. Of course, it wasn’t just the player suspensions that disrupted Mason’s preseason but also some injury battles. A patella tendon issue saw him on a reduced training load for running pre-Christmas and the condition only worsened, relegating the debutante to work on the bike, the rowing machine, cross training, boxing and other non-impact work until about the middle of February. “That set me back a fair bit,” Mason said. But when he finally hit the AFL field, he felt like he was able to adapt and didn’t feel out of his depth, having

already played football, for Millicent, and Glenelg, against adults and those bigger bodies, certainly helping the transition. While admitting the game is quicker, it was the noise of the crowd that Mason really noticed. “It is really hard to hear out on the field and it takes a while to get used to,” he said. “You feel like no one can hear you and you can’t hear

them – you have to learn to block it out as much as you can.” In his debut season he played as a forward but the midfield and half back are still in the mix, as Mason develops a bigger body, and discussions with coaches suggest he could be a utility. “I have to focus on getting a bigger body in the off season, putting on more weight,” he said. Mason lived with a team mate in 2016 and after a season of just concentrating on footy, he is looking forward to heading to university next year, studying business and health science. “You need things outside of football and friends outside of football and I am looking forward to that,” he said. Mason is due back at the club in November. Dyson Heppell and Brendon Goddard are two players who have already had an impact on Mason, while he is enjoying also learning from the guys that are two or three years ahead of him in their careers.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - HOW TO BUILD A BODY LIKE ROBBIE... By ROBBIE TANSEL As many of you are aware, I started jogging as a form of exercise (and personal torture) about two years ago. Apart from improving my health, my jogging journey started due to making big claims about my ability to run the Blue Lake Fun Run. In 2013 I gave it a go with absolutely no training. Predictably it didn’t go particularly well. I managed to jog about two thirds of the 6.8 kilometres, walked the rest, and was unable to walk for the next fortnight. In 2014 I started jogging three times a week before going to work in the morning. With a couple of months of training under my still quite large belt, I managed to jog the trip up the hill and around the lake without walking in about forty two minutes. Last year I’d maintained my three morning a week jog for over twelve months and again managed to jog the whole way, in about thirty four minutes. With the Blue Lake Fun Run advertisements starting to appear on the television, and these impressive performances behind me, I thought it was probably time to share the secrets of my success with all of you. The Blue Lake Fun Run website has a training plan but I think I can share a more comprehensive plan to get yourself onto the podium. You’re probably just

like me, if you’re fat, unfit, eat poorly, hate exercising and none of that really bothers you. So my training plan may be for you. To begin with, buy yourself some nice new running sneakers and running gear. If you can’t be a serious runner, at least look like a serious runner. If you’re a man and you want to get into lycra gear, please wear something over the top. Noone needs to see that. If you’ve spent money on new gear, you also feel obligated to get some value out of it. You can’t spend all that money and then not go for a run. The next thing you’ll want to think about is where are you going to run? Avoid running up hills. It sucks. Maybe scout the roads and paths where people don’t walk their dogs. Dogs equal dog bombs on the path. It’s not fun going for a run as it is, without having to clean your shoes when you get home. One of the key things I aim for is to find running routes where I will encounter lots of people who are also out exercising. I’m pretty sure that I’m going to have a heart attack one day while out running so I want there to be people around who may be able to keep me alive. With this in mind I try to run past the hospital and doctor clinics while out running. The more skills they have while resuscitating me the better. The next thing you’ll want to do is think about nutrition. You want energy. While training for the Blue Lake Fun Run I like to eat as much chocolate, hot chips, pizza and Kitchener buns as

I can. I then wash it down with a can or two of Pepsi. Running makes you hate yourself and everything about your life so you need to have something to look forward to. You’re exercising so you can eat whatever you want anyway. You really need a routine and a plan with exercising. I exercise at six o’clock in the morning. If I leave it for later in the day, I know that I’ll find reasons not to go. “I should spend time with Donna and Shaquille,” for instance. Or, “There are things I need to do around the house.” Or, “My toenails could really do with a good cut.” At six in the morning I don’t have the creativity to think of excuses. On the other hand, I’m so tired I can’t get out of bed. Donna knows it’s important for me to go exercise so she has come up with a number of ways of getting me out of bed. Sometimes she throws a glass of cold water on me. On other occasions she puts Justin Bieber music on loudly in our bedroom. Some mornings she starts telling me stories about the dreams she has had through the night. Any one of these things make it incredibly difficult for me to want to stay in bed. There’s no guarantee that I’ll go out the door of the house but getting out of bed is a start. As far as I’m concerned, those are the keys to becoming a fitter, healthier you. If I can do it, so can you, or something mildly motivational like that. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you’d like to race me in the Blue Lake Fun Run.

‘BE ENTERTAINED AT LIBRARY MARKETS’ The Cave Gardens precinct has been the site of Lakes Rotary Library Markets for the past few years. From October to March [inclusive] they run from 10a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Stalls offer locally made produce including many foodstuffs, craftware, gifts, jewellery, sweets, fruit and vegetables and much more. As an added attraction this season, musical interludes will be provided by the Mt. Gambier City Band and by Scott Maxwell’s Grant High students, Viv Dowling’s singers with Boaz Manser, Mt. Gambier Highland Pipe Band, the Blue Lake Ukelele Band and Inna Tucker’s Refugee band at subsequent markets. Shoppers may peruse the 30 plus stalls, buy a snack or coffee, then recline on the lush lawns while enjoying the performances. This year will be no exception! The inaugural market on October 9th will feature the Mt. Gambier City Band as guest performers to start the season on a high note. lifestyle1.net | 29

RIDING A WAVE OF SUCCESS Kelzie Schipp is currently representing South Australia at the Interschool Equestrian National Championships. The 15 years old has been competing seriously for four years but did start riding as a four year old – a family tradition of horses and riding laying the foundation for her love affair with the sport. “I used to go with mum to shows that she was competing in but I wasn’t

really interested myself,” Kelzie said. “I did other sports but in the end this (equestrian) fitted best.” And it has fitted perfectly as Kelzie becomes immersed in the family’s history, which had one of her mother’s horses, affectionately known as Wombat, part of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Kelzie has three horses at the moment with two younger horses set to be ready for riding next year.

It has been quite the process for Kelzie to earn selection, with five competitions on the calendar and her best two scores then used to make the final team decision. Kelzie is an eventer, meaning she needs to be an allrounder – dressage, cross country and showjumping. She competed at the Naracoorte Horse Trials, with the other four competitions based in Adelaide. The tough part for Kelzie was the late notification of her

selection – the miscommunication seeing her officially told on July 29 that she had made the team, and her entry had to be in by August 1. The selection was not just about Kelzie but also about her horse – it is a horse and rider combination that is selected and that is the horse and rider that has to compete. Westbury Park Chicago is Kelzie’s mount for the nationals – a horse she calls Cecilia. Millicent based equestrian star Kerrie

Bowman has been working with Kelzie, who has been riding every day, honing her skills. She has one dressage lesson and a jumping lesson with Kerrie. Kelzie enjoys all three disciplines but in her own words “lives” for cross country. Competing is certainly in Kelzie’s genes – her mother Nadyne used to compete at two star and three star events. Nadyne has also set up a breeding business and national equestrian star Megan Jones has horses bred by Nadyne. It means Kelzie is basically riding horses that were literally bred by her family and the relationship with Cecilia is a strong bond. “I took her on when she was four months old and I’ve had her ever since,” Kelzie said. “I’ve competed on her since she was four and she’s now seven.” And Kelzie looks set to have horses as part of her life for some time to come. Through school she will be able to do a SACE program set up by Equestrian SA and she is also looking into a Level I Certificate in Instructing.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP FOR TOUGH TIGER When you play 300 A and A Reserve games in the Western Border Netball Association you automatically qualify for life membership – it is reward not just for a long career but a career played for the vast majority at the highest level. And when you examine the playing career alone of the 2016 inductee, it is impressive, spanning two decades since her debut in 1996. She has played in seven premierships at A and A Reserve level, picked up a swag of club and league individual accolades and has represented the association at both junior and senior level, including being part of championships winning teams. As a player she has been described as tenacious and hard working and when you step off the court having been matched up on the defensive style mid courter you know you’ve played a game and earned every possession.

As with most people honoured with life membership of any organisation, it is always about so much more than what happens on the sporting field – a junior coach, a club umpire and a long standing committee member, happy to take on executive roles, Western Border netball’s 2016 inductee is the epitomy of the all round performer – quality and class on and off the court. North Gambier’s Kerry Bilney became the newest life member of the Western Border Netball Association at the 2016 Medal Count and presented the premiership medals to the 15 & Under A premiership winning team as her first act as a life member of the association. Below - The Western Border Netball Association’s newest life member Kerry Bilney (left) presented 2016 15 & Under A best on court Isabelle Turner, from Millicent, her medal.
