AT THE GALLERY

PROMISING VINTAGE IN COONAWARRA

Expressions – An Exhibition of Portraits • PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND• Until April 22 • This exhibition features a collection of portraits of local identities, famous and infamous. Ron Penrose paints with a palette knife to create textural and lively colourful characters on canvas.

Vintage in the Coonawarra wine region is progressing really well, and there is optimism about the overall quality for 2016, according to Allen Jenkins, President of Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated. He said that vintage was “going really well” with the picking of Shiraz grapes completed, and Cabernet Sauvignon close to being all harvested. “The main focus in Coonawarra at the moment is on Cabernet, with most growers working hard to bring the majority of the remaining Cabernet in the next one to two weeks,” said Mr Jenkins. Mr Jenkins added that winemakers are very optimistic about the quality of the fruit, and what this might mean for assessing the 2016 vintage so far. “The Cabernet flavours have been building as they ripen, and the cool autumnal nights – coupled with still functional leaves, are contributing to some lovely varietal fruit character.” He said that the drier conditions, and high grape numbers, have meant that Cabernet berry size is fairly small, yet in the ideal range around 7-10mm. ‘We are seeing (as a consequence of berry size and grape numbers) excellent colour, tannins, and intensity,” said Mr Jenkins. He shared the region’s optimism, but gave a caveat before tabling this year’s vintage report.

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Spiced cauliflour soup 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1 brown onion, coarsely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tablespoon finely grated ginger 1 large green chilli, seeded, finely chopped 2 tablespoons mild curry paste 1 large cauliflower, cut into florets 1 large potato, peeled, coarsely chopped 1 litre (4 cups) Campbell’s Real Stock Chicken or Campbell’s Real Stock Vegetable 250ml PHILADELPHIA Light Cream For Cooking, a cream alternative 6 sprigs curry leaves 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, extra, to shallow fry Pappadums, to serve Method Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until onion softens. Add the curry paste and cook for 1 minute or until aromatic. Add the

cauliflower, potato and chicken stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes or until potato and cauliflower and tender. Remove from heat. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Transfer cauliflower mixture to the jug of a blender and blend until smooth. Return to saucepan. Place over low heat. Add the PHILLY and stir to combine. Cook for 2 minutes or until heated through. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, heat extra oil in a small frying pan over medium heat. Add half the curry leaves and cook for 1 minute or until crisp. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining curry leaves. Ladle soup among serving bowls. Top with curry leaves. Serve immediately with pappadums, if desired.

“People are happy with crop levels, and the fruit quality for all varieties is looking very promising. We just need a continuation of some dry weather to finish the 2016 harvest.” Coonawarra wine region has 5,600 hectares of vineyards of which over 60% are devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% to Shiraz, with Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and other varieties represented in smaller plantings.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS FOR ROYAL LIFESAVING CLUB The Mount Gambier Royal Lifesaving Club has recently returned from a successful South Australian Pool Lifesaving State Championships in Adelaide. The team returned with an impressive 26 medals. The club’s two juniors received ribbons, swam individually and also in relays, whilst the seniors competed in various lifesaving events. Glenelg Shire Business & Tourism Awards • Portland Golf Club, Portland • April 15 • The Glenelg Shire Council is acknowledging and rewarding those businesses and individuals in the Shire who provide excellence in their chosen industry. Log onto glenelg.vic.gov.au

A $14.5 million redevelopment of Casterton’s Edgarley aged care facility is the largest private sector investment in the Glenelg Shire of the past decade, delivering significant economic benefits and job creation to the local community. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander this week congratulated the committee of management who have received a Federal Government capital grant to complete the works, which will consolidate services at the Jackson Street facility. The proposed four-storey design will include 60 residential care beds with connected ensuites – an increase of 17 beds. The layout provides 20 interconnecting single rooms to create 10 double rooms for couples and provides more independent units. The current site, which includes buildings first constructed in the 1930s, features various separated wings, restricting service delivery. Cr Oberlander said council welcomed the redevelopment which would create a modern and purpose built facility, catering for the region’s ageing population. “This is one of the biggest capital investments in our shire in more than 10 years. This project will create an estimated 60 local jobs during construction with opportunities for additional new roles at the facility once the project is complete,” he said. “The redevelopment will provide world class health services under one roof, complimenting the independent aged care living units already available at the site. This project will ensure our ageing population can continue to live in our local community, close to family and friends, well into their final years. I congratulate the vision of the hard working committee of management whose efforts coordinating this project have ensured Federal Government funding has been committed and plans can now be finalised to start construction.” To learn more about the project visit www.edgarleyhomes.com.au .

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ANNIVERSARY COUNT The Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo Recovery Team and BirdLife Australia are currently seeking volunteers to assist with the 2016 annual count for the nationally endangered Southeastern Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo. The 2016 count, to be held on Saturday, May 7, marks the 20th year of counting cockies across the South East of South Australia and South West Victoria. “Since 1996, hundreds of volunteers from all parts of the country have helped to locate flocks of Redtails as part of the annual count,” said Bronwyn Perryman, Project Coordinator of the Recovery Program. Participating in the count is easy – all you need is a survey partner/friend or group, binoculars, a love of the outdoors and a vehicle, preferably 4WD. Volunteer groups are then allocated one of around 60 sites in stringybark forest to drive around, stopping at regular intervals to listen out for Red-tails. Survey sites are spread across the range of the cockatoo, from Nelson to the Little Desert in Victoria and from Mount Gambier to Keith in South Australia. “Landholders who have remnant stringybark on their property can also get involved and survey their own patch on the daym” Bronwyn said. “Those interested in participating need no prior bird survey experience, but need to become familiar with what Red-tails look and sound like, as they can often be mistaken for the more common Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo. “You can hear the difference between species by visiting our website at www.

SAVE THE DATE Grampians Grape Escape • Halls Gap Village Oval, Halls Gap April 30 – May 1

redtial.com.au.” A training session for count volunteers is held every year to assist volunteers who haven’t participated previously or would like some more tips on how to locate Red-tails. This year the session will be held in Casterton, starting at 9am on the morning of the count. The most important reason for holding the count each year is to identify the location of large flocks for further monitoring as part of our annual flock counts. Flock counts are undertaken each year to gain an indication of breeding success in previous seasons. This provides our best indication of how the population is faring. Last year counters found a record 1545 Red-tails, comprising 38

sightings. The success of last year’s count was attributed to a large number of pre-count sightings and information received in the weeks leading up to the count. From now on, anyone who sees Red-tails is encouraged to phone in their sighting to freecall 1800 262 062 or via our sightings page on the website. “We need as many sightings as possible over the next month to help maximise the number of birds counted on Saturday 7 May. We want to make sure that volunteers participating in the count are strategically placed in areas where the birds are currently known to be,” said Bronwyn. Following the count, all volunteers are encouraged to attend our celebration marking the 20th year

of counting cockies at our annual Baileys Rocks BBQ and Campout This is very informal and a great way for volunteers to meet up with others taking part on the day. For more information on how to become involved or to register to participate please contact Bronwyn Perryman on 1800 262 062 or email redtail@birdlife.org. au. The SERTBC Recovery Program is managed by BirdLife Australia and is supported by Natural Resources South East, Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority and Wimmera Catchment Management Authority through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

Founded in 1991, the Grampians Grape Escape is regional Victoria’s premier food and wine festival, held during the first weekend of May every year at Halls Gap. Attended by around 8000 people the festival provides a relaxed atmosphere for foodies, families and international tourists to drink and graze their way through the offerings of more than 130 of Western Victoria’s best artisans of wine, fine food and produce. Celebrity chef Miguel Maestre and singing sensation Kate Ceberano are the drawcards for 2016. Log onto grampians grapeescape.com.au

SELL YOUR BRAND TO A BIGGER CUSTOMER BASE Learn how to improve your business marketing by broadening your customer base at a marketing workshop in Heywood later this month. Marketing guru Tim Gentle will share his more than 20-years experience in the field at the Understanding Marketing workshop on Wednesday, April 27, at Heywood’s Glenelg Shire customer service centre. The session will detail strategies for businesses to develop marketing goals that work and ways to effectively measure the outcomes. Mr Gentle (pictured) said understanding marketing was not just about having a website, a Facebook page or placing advertisements in local newspapers. “Marketing is a vital part of establishing and building your business brand. Effective marketing will save you time and money and help you attract and retain a loyal customer base,” he said. Glenelg Shire chief executive officer Greg Burgoyne said the workshop was an opportunity for local businesses, and the tourism sector, to learn more about their customer base, whilst clarifying their unique selling proposition. “Businesses will learn the strategies to realise what makes them stand out from the crowd – what is different in their organisation to a competitor? From here businesses can choose the right marketing activities to build their business opportunities,” he said. “These workshops will assist traders to develop effective marketing action plans to focus their efforts and resources in appropriate areas, such as market research, online activities, and customer service. “Tim Gentle has vast experience in marketing and the digital world and will help businesses to learn how to measure the success of their marketing activities, on a path to achieving their business goals.” The two-hour workshop is $20 per person.

Participants will receive a comprehensive workbook and reference guide, three-page marketing template, valuable networking opportunities with other business operators, and follow-up pack with further resources. The Understanding Marketing workshop is the second of four small business sessions planned for the Glenelg Shire this year.

TRIVIA

PET OF THE WEEK Do you have room in your heart for this special boy? A two-year-old English Staffordshire cross, Jackson has had a very difficult start in life – as seen by his illegally cropped ears. But don’t worry, Jackson hasn’t let that get him down! With his incredibly friendly, happygo-lucky and loving nature, Jackson has completely stolen the hearts of the SEAWL team. Jackson simply adores being smothered is cuddles and kisses and is searching for the perfect owner who he can share all his love with. Jackson is an intelligent young boy who loves to play and knows all his basic commands - he even knows how to shake hands! - but will need further training with walking calmly on a leash. Jackson will need a very special owner, so If you think you can give Jackson a second chance at a safe and loving home, contact the SEAWL on (08)8723 9133 during opening hours or visitwww.seawl.thelimestonecoast.com.au for more information about the adoption process.

FAMILIAR FACE JOINS 3MP TEAM

3MP is a Millicent owned and operated sheet metal roll forming business, specialising in fences, sheds, outbuildings, verandahs, roofing, guttering and flashing up to eight metres. Heading into its fifth year of operation, owner Stefan Pulmer saw the need to bring in some new blood with fresh eyes but plenty of industry experience. That’s where Mike Reilly came into the picture and the experienced building industry identity is now managing the business. Since the establishment of 3MP in late 2011, with limited financial resources, it has identified market potential which will assist the owners to develop the business into a substantial metal roll forming business, with an established network of customers and a sound reputation for quality products and timely service delivery. Mike is now on board to further develop the fledgling business and he was happy to accept the new challenge in a career that spans more than 30 years in the industry, and includes managing two other successful building industry

businesses along the way. “It is such a good opportunity for me,” Mike said. “I am looking forward to the challenge of helping grow a young business.” Mike has been in the building game since 1985 and has been brought on board to facilitate sales growth and the future direction of 3MP. “They were looking for someone with my experience and knowledge,” he said. “And we would be looking to grow and tap into the amount of builders I have done work with, in the past.” Located in The Snuggery Industrial Park, Princes Hwy, Millicent, 3MP offers a range of fencing products, including traditional post-andrail, including their neighbour friendly, Florence, Heritage, High Low Spear, Palermo, tubular panel designs and flat top designs, as well as fencing solutions for pools and security fences. 3MP also proudly offer verandahs that boast beauty, convenience, and durability. You can arrange for one of the 3MP team to call into your home today by calling (08)8734 4394 or drop in to see Mike at 3MP for all your sheet metal needs.

FOOTBALL Naracoorte teenager earns call up Year 11 Naracoorte High School student Tamika Nash-Hahn is one of 26 students who have been selected to play in the South Australian U18 Women’s Football Competition which will be held in Melbourne, in May, this year. The Port Adelaide Football Club has given its support to Tamika and the Women’s Football team by allowing them to train on Alberton Oval, as well as providing a representative from the Football Club to offer weekly expertise and mentorship. “It is an absolute privilege to work with both Tom Logan and Mark Clayton of the Port Adelaide Football Club. They have worked regularly with me to improve my stoppage and have provided us with invaluable team building skills each week,” Tamika said. Tamika, who plays in the back line, has shown her dedication to the sport by travelling to Adelaide every Sunday for training since November last year. She is no stranger to representing South Australia, having already played in the U18 Youth Girls National AFL Championships in June of last year and U16 Girls Football Competition for South Australia in both 2013 and 2014.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - TIME FOR A CAREER CHANGE... by Robbie Tansel I have been tossing up for a little while now whether it is possibly time for a career change. As some of you will remember I am currently employed at the Department of Births Deaths and Marriages as the person who approves or rejects baby names. Obviously it’s a pretty fulfilling job, knowing that you are making such a difference to the world. On the other hand I’ve been doing it for a while now and I feel I’m getting a bit jaded. I picked it up this week when I let someone name their child Greenlee and someone else call their daughter Frooti. I’ve allowed these children to be set up for a lifetime of disappointment and I’m going to have to live with that. Whilst pondering these thoughts on my morning jog recently my new career came to me, or rather went whizzing past. I’ve decided I want to be a newspaper delivery man. I’m not totally sure that I have the necessary skills to be a newspaper delivery man, because have no doubt, this is a highly skilled

profession. Only the best of the best get to drive around throwing newspapers out of their windows. Consider what you need to be able to do to be successful in this career. You need to be able to drive your car, really quite quickly might I add. Whilst doing that you must throw a newspaper out of your car window, often over the top of the vehicle, and if you’re really good, while the vehicle is still in motion. Apart from the driving and throwing you also need to navigate your way around the streets, getting from house to house as quickly as possible not missing any houses that need their paper delivered and avoiding the need to double back. The skills required to perform this job surely make it one of the most complex professions a person could undertake. Let’s also factor in the fact that the throw can’t just go anywhere. It’s important that it’s really quite an accurate fling. The newspaper receiver doesn’t want to have to search around for their morning newspaper. They don’t want to have to fetch it out of their rosebushes. They don’t want it to be in a puddle in their driveway. They certainly don’t want their cat to receive a newspaper to the noggin. It’s important that the paper will be found in a pretty accessible position. We’re talking about the sort of precision and attention that we don’t even expect from brain surgeons. That’s pressure. Personally I think we should actually be talking about it being an Olympic sport. You can’t tell me

that it doesn’t involve more skill than most Olympic events. It’d definitely be more visually exciting than watching equestrian. I can just imagine a Hyundai Excel tearing through the favelas of Rio de Janeiro distributing papers to the locals. It’s already sounding better than ninety percent of the events at the Olympics. The only concern I have is whether newspaper delivery man is a career with a future. Literacy levels are dropping. More and more people are turning their backs on print and doing all of their reading in a digital format. I just don’t want to go through the appropriate uni course, get my qualification and then not be able to find work. Sure I could become a rally driver or something but it just seems it would be a waste of my new skillset. If you have any knowledge on which uni is offering the best course to make my dream come true, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com
