COVER - LOADS OF FAMILY FUN AT THE RAIL The inaugural Limestone Coast Community Festival will be held at the Mount Gambier Rail Lands on Sunday, April 17. Packed full of entertainment and catering for all ages, the festival will be sure to keep you busy all day. Along with the popular kid zone, featuring jumping castle and face painting, the festival is bringing back such old time favourites as three legged races, lime (a twist on the egg) and spoon races, tug of war, sand races and musical chairs, designed to get all the family involved. To keep things running smoothly and limit waiting times and line-ups, there will be registration for all the games from 10:30am, with the games starting at 11am sharp. For the more adventurous, there will be an inflatable boxing ring and boxing gloves to try, as well as sumo suits, with both guaranteed to bring out your fun and competitive side. Throughout the day there will be activities on stage designed for you to sit, have a bite to eat from one of the many food vendors and relax while being entertained and informed, including singing, gardening demonstrations

and a fashion parade. The fashion parade will be convened by the Salvation Army, whose store was recently tragically guttered by fire. They have put together outfits from their warehouse and will have the outfits for sale on the day. Two major events not to be missed, as a competitor or spectator, will be the gumboot races and pie eating contests. The gumboot races will see competitors going head to head through an obstacle course. Before they can tackle the course they will have to retrieve their rubber boots from a pool of slippery water, making it that little bit tougher. Gumboot races will be at 11.20am, 12.20pm, 1.20pm and 2.20pm. There will be separate kids and adult races. Numbers will be limited so get in early with registrations starting from 10:30am. With thanks to Metro Bakery and Cafe, the good, old fashion pie eating contest will be sure to draw a crowd to watch the competitors take up the challenge. On the day, will you be watching, or do you have what it takes to compete and become a pie eating champ? The pie eating will be at 11.45am and 2pm. Again, there are limited spots so register early. Registration opens at 10:30am. If having a laugh at someone else’s expense is more your pace then be sure to head to the Dunk Tank. Some well-known Mount Gambier identities will be put on the ‘hot’ seat. The best part is, it’s you that can have all the fun dunking them. As you move throughout

the rail lands from the stage to family games, activities to stalls or just a leisurely Sunday walk you will be serenaded and entertained by local singers and musicians that will be performing throughout the Rail Lands. If that’s not already enough, wait, there is more, roving entertainment!! The super hero, Balloonman will be making an appearance with his amazing ability to transform any balloon into a work of art. Plus Razi, an amazing and quick paced illusionist, will keep you guessing and your eyes will be confused. Razi (pictured right) has just finished performing at Adelaide’s Fringe Festival and received rave reviews. Whether you want to start the day off at a little slower pace, or by the end you need to relax and take a breather, then there will be a larger range of market stalls, small business and boutique stalls, where you can spend your time browsing. Plus, with thanks to the multicultural community, you will have a chance to see displays, demonstrations and speak to different multicultural groups as they share stories about their lives, journey and cultures. Gala Mustafa, from Gala’s Delights Catering, will have delicious Kurdistan food available for purchase, including pida, stuffed with vegetables or chicken, chicken and vegetable curry with saffron rice, kofta, baklava and vegetable pakora. Mount Gambier is to host the region’s first ever Limestone Coast Community

Festival, which organisers hope will set a benchmark for the region and rival some of the already established festivals across South Australia and Victoria. The Limestone Coast Community Festival is primed to set Mount Gambier alive and showcase the region, with attractions rarely seen in regional areas and entertainment that is highly sought after and recently performed at Adelaide’s biggest festival, the Fringe.

LAUNCH OF NEW TUNA FISHING COMPETITION

AT THE GALLERY

Reel in the biggest tuna catch this season and you could share in thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes, including $10,000 cash in Australia’s biggest tuna fishing competition. Plans are currently being finalised for the inaugural Portland Annual Tuna Fishing competition, a four-weekend event which will test the country’s best recreational fishers from May 14 to June 5 this year. Glenelg Shire CEO Greg Burgoyne said anglers were expected to travel from across the country to lure the winning catch. “Portland has a national profile as the home of Australia’s tuna and this competition will further position our region as a destination for the growing recreational fishing market,” he said. “Whether you are a first-timer or a novice angler, this competition could be won by anyone.” The competition will run over four consecutive weekends - May 14 and 15, May 21 and 22, May 28 and 29 with final weigh-ins June 4 and 5. Entry, which is due to open soon, is $40 per person covering the four weekends of the competition. Weigh-ins will take place each

NARACOORTE EDUCATOR CHINA BOUND Naracoorte High School principal Kym Grant has been selected as one of 14 South Australian Government school leaders to represent the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) in a delegation to China. He is the only Principal representing the South East region. The group, which will depart on April 17 for two weeks, will travel to Shandong, the sister province to South Australia, visiting schools and a University in the capital Jinan. The group will also be visiting other educational facilities in Shanghai and Beijing, as well as meeting with Chinese education officials throughout the journey.“It is a privilege to be selected for this and I look forward to the many professional insights I will gain as a result of sharing with our Chinese counterparts,” Mr Grant

We have had several international students in the past who have contributed significantly to our school and local community and this visit will allow me to gain a greater understanding of how country schools can facilitate an increase in international enrolments.Country schools can provide unique learning experiences for students, something our school and community prides itself on and one that we should actively promote to our Chinese counterparts.” Naracoorte High School will also be exploring possible strategies gained from this delegation to make it an attractive and viable educational option for international students.

AT THE GALLERY Expressions – An Exhibition of Portraits • PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND • Until April 22 This exhibition features a collection of portraits of local identities, famous and infamous. Ron Penrose paints with a palette knife to create textural and lively colourful characters on canvas.

YOUNG CARERS RAISE FUNDS FOR THREATENED SPECIES Friends of Shorebirds South East have received a financial boost from South East CarersSA - Young Carers with a donation of $170 to assist in protecting threatened shorebirds. Last year, the Team Friendship group of young carers from South East CarersSA approached Natural Resources South East wanting to help protect the environment. The team was then introduced to the Friends of Shorebirds South East group, who have a particular interest in helping the vulnerable hooded plover. The hooded plover is a medium-sized sandy-brown plover that lays its eggs in the sand along the beach and in dunes that are susceptible to attacks from foxes and dogs and four wheel drives. Carers SA Young Carer worker Kym Galluccio said thanks to the collaboration, the young carers had the opportunity to learn about the hooded plover, with activities including a fun field trip to Port MacDonnell. “Thanks to Natural Resources South East, the team were able to learn about the Hooded plover, and were inspired to raise money through the sale of arts and crafts, and raising further donations, with the money to go towards protecting the threatened birds,” Ms Gallucio said. “It was a great learning and bonding experience for the team.” Team Friendship is a group of carers between 6 and 25 years of age who have a role in caring for one or more family members. As part of the CarersSA Young Carers program, they are provided with peer support and fun activities to give them a reprieve from their role as carers. Natural Resources South East volunteer coordinator Pete Whiting said that he was impressed with the enthusiasm and fundraising efforts by Team Friendship, and by the connections made between different organisations. “These

kids have a lot of responsibilities at home, caring for someone on top of school work and other commitments, so they often don’t get much of a break,” Mr Whiting said. “For them to choose to use their time to raise money for this cause is just amazing. It has been really good to link local groups of people together who have been able to get to know each other and learn from each other in sharing a common interest in the environment and conservation.” Mr Whiting said the money will be used by the group to go towards helping to protect hjoded plovers in the local area. “The Friends of Shorebirds South East will be able to use this donation to continue the important work they are doing to protect shorebirds, including the Hooded plover, along our coastline.” To register or find out more about the Young Carers network contact the South East CarersSA office on (08)8724 8700.

Get on board and enjoy Matt Byrne’s nautical hit comedy The Luv Boat. Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell and Member for Barker Tony Pasin have enticed one of the big comedy hits of the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Festival to bring their act to Mount Gambier. “I am delighted that the Luv Boat will set sail for the Blue Lake bringing a taste of the Adelaide Fringe to Mount Gambier” said Mr Bell. “Not everyone is able to travel to Adelaide for the Fringe Festival and I see it as an exciting opportunity to share with the entire community one of the acts from the Festival”. The Luv Boat will take patrons on an unforgettable two hour Off Their Rockers South Seizures Sunset Cruise aboard the S.S. Unthinkable – better known as The Luv Boat. “With many of the acts travelling to Adelaide to attend the Fringe Festival I see it as an opportunity to entice them to perform in our city which may eventually lead to Mount Gambier hosting a mini festival in the future” said Mr Bell. The Luv Boat will set sail from Purplez at 7 Percy

Street, Mount Gambier, on Saturday, April 16, from 7.30pm for an 8pm start. The event doubles as a fundraiser for the Liberal Party with tickets available by emailing mtgambierbranch@gmail. com. Tickets include the show, two drinks (beer & wine) and a supper and cost $55. The Luv Boat will feature Kim York as Butterfly, Marc Clement as Nerfus, Stefanie Rossi as Sammy and Matt Byrne as Captain Obvious. “We play up to 30 different characters on board the S.S. Unthinkable,” Byrne said. “It’s fast, it’s frenetic and its crazy but you’ll split your sides as the Captain and his crew try to keep everybody happy on The Luv Boat and avoid the melting icebergs!”.

The Limestone Coast Red Meat Cluster (LCRMC), in conjunction with business management consultancy ProAdvice, has developed a program to help the region’s red meat producers grow their business profitability. To improve business profitability, producers need to know how their business is performing now, according to program presenter Chris Scheid, of ProAdvice. “The program will help Limestone Coast red meat producers analyse the health of their business as it stands, understand their business profit drivers and identify areas to focus on to improve profitability,” he said. Known as A Better Red Meat Business by Your Design, the program comprises four one-day workshops in Naracoorte between April and July, as well as mentoring from experienced red meat producers who have already made changes to their businesses and improved their profitability. Conventional wisdom says that farm businesses need to increase scale to increase returns, however, recent analysis from LCRMC shows that

management performance and productivity need to lift before chasing scale. Businesses need to ‘earn the right to grow’ before expanding. LCRMC is hosting a FREE, no-obligation breakfast so you can find out more about the program and meet course presenter Chris Scheid of ProAdvice. The breakfast will be held this Friday, 8-9am, at the Naracoorte Hotel (Billy Mac’s breakfast room). For catering numbers, please RSVP to LCRMC project coordinator Ann Aldersey on 0428 854 825 or ann@limestonecoastredmeat.com.au More details about A Better Red Meat Business by Your Design are at: http://limestonecoastredmeat.com. au/news/ The LCRMC is a region-wide project funded through PIRSA’s Premium Food and Wine Co-Innovation Cluster Program. It involves people from all sectors of the red meat value chain, who are working collaboratively in a number of areas to develop a deeper understanding of the region’s red meat industry, build innovation, grow profitability and enhance skills.

FOSTERING INSPIRATION Life Without Barriers’ carers share their story

During a pause from teaching six years ago, Paul and Chris sought to do ‘something else’ to help the community. Being teachers, they were aware of the issues facing disadvantaged children and the idea of fostering captured their imagination. They felt particularly inspired to be therapeutic carers, who give a home to children with high needs, such as children with a disability or those requiring behaviour-related support. The couple spoke to Life Without Barriers, which specialises in providing both regular and high level care to children from five to 17 years, who need short-term, long-term and respite foster care placements. They said they chose to become carers through Life Without Barriers because of the comprehensive training and ongoing support offered, to build their knowledge, skills base and confidence in fostering children. Carers interested in therapeutic care also receive additional training in how to create a therapeutic home environment that helps children overcome the effects of trauma, grief and loss. “You won’t feel like you’ve been left on your own” the couple said: “Our fantastic Supporter of Carers listens to us, helps resolve issues and has a vast knowledge of the fostering system that helps us every step of the way. She’s there for us and we know who to turn to if we need advice.” For Paul and Chris, being a part of a loving foster family is a rich and enlivening experience. Just when they could have been taking more time for themselves, they decided to dedicate their lives to foster children. “It’s hard work at times, but a great life and we’ve been invigorated by the experience.” The couple are united in their belief that a good foster experience gives children a chance to become resilient and feel like they can grow in a safe, secure environment. Their motto is that ‘if you want to be happy, make someone else happy’, so they get as much from the experience as the children they’re helping. Jane Longbottom, SA State Director at Life Without Barriers said: “Paul and Chris epitomise the dedication and commitment of foster carers in our community. It’s a really tough job at times, but with it comes a huge sense of achievement for foster carers, and a child’s life has been changed for the better forever. We are so grateful to all of our carers and the wonderful work they do each and every day.”

Paul Worsman, Life Without Barriers foster carer.

AT THE CINEMA Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice • NOW SHOWING Fearing the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on the man of steel, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman fighting each other, a new threat, Doomsday, is created by Lex Luthor. It’s up to Superman and Batman to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis. Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. While for many he is still an emblem of hope, a growing number of people consider him a threat to humanity, seeking justice for the chaos he has brought to Earth. As far as Bruce Wayne is concerned, Superman is clearly a danger to society. He fears for the future of the world with such a reckless power left ungoverned, and so he dons his mask and cape to right Superman’s wrongs. The rivalry between them is furious, fueled by bitterness and vengeance, and nothing can dissuade them from waging this war. However, a dark new threat arises in the form of a third man: one who has a power greater than either of them to endanger the world and cause total destruction!

FEATURE - YOUTH ON WHEELS About to get your L or P plates? Looking at buying your first car? Are you 15-25 years old or know someone that is? Then don’t miss this event! An essential part of rural living for young people is the ability to maintain and understand their motor vehicle. It is not enough for a young driver to know how to drive a car, but they also need to know what to do if they are caught on the side of a lonely road with little or no phone signal. An opportunity for young people aged between 15 and 25 to learn about tyres and pressures, wheel change procedure, bumper to bumper under vehicle inspection, cooling system/fuel system, fuse box, oil system, electrical system and how to jump start a battery will be held as part of National Youth Week. Supper is included. A free 2.5 hour workshop is being offered by the Barry Maney Group on Thursday, April 14, at 6pm at their Jubilee Highway West Car Service Centre in conjunction with the District Council of Grant. The evening is aimed at acquainting participants with the mechanics of their vehicle, how the vehicle operates and what to do in an emergency situation, irrespective of the make or model they are driving. Registration for the workshop is essential by contacting the District Council of Grant on (08)8738 3000 or email pmcc@dcgrant.sa.gov.au by Friday, April 8. Other National Youth Week 2016 events include a chance for the younger ones to try out wheels of another kind, by competing in the free Slot Car Championship at Port MacDonnell Community Complex on Friday 8th April from 4.30–6.30pm, followed the same night by a Blue Light Disco at the Port MacDonnell Community Hall from 6.30–9pm. This is a drug and alcohol free, lock-in event featuring pizzas, prizes and giveaways as well as great music. The Youth Foodies event, on Friday, April 15, from 4pm, will see young people unleashing their inner Master Chef at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex when they prepare some tasty and healthy meals to enjoy. Numbers are limited for this event, so best to book as soon as possible. Further details can be found on the District Council of Grant’s website www. dcgrant.sa.gov.au/Our Community/Youth, or Facebook page, or by phoning (08)8738 3000.

SOUTHERN LIFE TEASER - ONCE UPON A TIME

SOUTHERN LIFE TEASER - JOE SPICER

When Graham Russell was four years old, his grandfather gave him a model railway – it become one of his most beloved toys, in fact, he still has it and it still works. Little did four year old Graham know, that a cherished childhood memory, when combined with the creativity of an art teacher and a vivid imagination steeped in fantasy, would spawn a unique tourism attraction that has seen visitors from around the world converge on the Penola Fantasy Rail. “For me, this is a hobby, not a business,” Graham said. After 37 years as an art and design teacher, the model railway and all its resident characters now take up all of Graham’s time. “It’s a bit like the Sydney Harbour Bridge,” Graham said. “You start at one end to keep it all maintained and by the time you get to the other end, it’s time to start again.” Graham’s partner, who runs the adjoining tea rooms, concurs, given she is the chief gardener and cleaner for the facility. And, of course, Graham is always planning new features for the ever expanding attraction. The Big Yellow Castle was added in September 2015, complete with a fairy flying school, and there are plans for a House of Horrors, which will house some of Graham’s more gory collectibles and come with a warning for the squeamish and easily frightened. From the lifesize Dracula and Merlin at the entrance to the fantasy railway land – two popular spots for selfies – visitors are swept away in a world filled with an eclectic mix of storybook and movie characters. Merlin is the character that kickstarted the project for Graham, while Count Dracula also has a prominent sector in the railway land. There is also a rock ‘n’ roll, cartoon character and super heroes sectors. The Penola Fantasy Rail not only attracts die hard model railway enthusiasts but also hard core collectors, as the display features some amazing pieces. It was 15 years ago that the idea for this unique tourism attraction was born and Graham has been painting, sculpting and constructing the rich fantasy world ever since,

Joe Spicer is a four time Australian Yard Dog Champion. Not bad for a boy who was Melbourne born and bred and did not really call rural Australia home until well into his 20s. It was a trip to a holiday farm in Bairnsdale as an 11 year old that saw Joe first encounter the kelpie breed – a bond that has never been broken and has eventually become a career. Basically 11 year old Joe rescued a litter of kelpies that had their death warrants signed. “They were going to drown the litter in a bucket and I just cried and cried until we were allowed to take them home,” Joe said. “It was from there I developed a love for the breed.” Joe was able to keep one of the five pup litter but suburban Melbourne was no place for a working dog. Fast forward a few years and Joe’s passion for the kelpie returned as he started to really investigate the breed and its role as a working dog. Weekends were spent at his girlfriend’s family’s farm in Rushworth. Joe was a landscape gardener Monday to Friday, running his own gardening business and used the farm as his weekender. “Eventually I tired of that and decided to have a sea change,” he said. “I got sick of working in Melbourne.” By this time Joe had two kelpies – Mate, the kelpie he rescued, and Spud. “Spud was the life of the party,” Joe said. “Everywhere we went he would do tricks, he was highly intelligent, a really outgoing dog. What sparked my interest in the work side was he was so good.”

officially opening its doors in December 2009. “When we started construction, we were also spending as much time as possible going around to collectable shops and buying up anything we thought would work,” Graham said. “There’s a lot of limited edition items and many items you just can’t source anymore.” Just walking around the fantasy rail land is an experience not to be missed but when you add it to the flair for the dramatic from host Graham, as he leads visitors through the display and it is hard not to be caught up in each of the worlds on display. Remove baking tray from freezer, add coconut mixture on top of base layer, using your fingers press out an even layer. Place back in freezer to firm up. To make icing, combine coconut oil, cocoa powder and maple or rice malt syrup and whisk well to combine. Remove baking tray from freezer, pour over icing and spread evenly to complete the slice. Place in freezer to firm up and set for at least an hour. To serve, slice into individual square portions. You can keep slice in freezer in an air tight container and allow to defrost in fridge or at room temperature before serving. Or keep slice in fridge in an airtight container.

NEW RECYCLING BINS SET TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE An estimated 10 tonnes of recycling will be saved from landfill annually as a result of new dual waste and recycling bins installed across the Glenelg Shire. During recent weeks council staff have installed 21 new-look steel bin enclosures, which were constructed locally, in the Portland CBD and townships of Merino and Digby. The dual bins include two separate 240 litre bins for recycling and waste making it double the size of the previous bins. The larger bins will play an important role in reducing public littering and will provide a direct cost saving to ratepayers as it will reduce the number of collection days per week across the shire’s public places, further improving the community’s carbon footprint. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander applauded the public recycling effort which is for the first time being delivered to the shire’s regional townships. “This project is providing greater opportunity for residents and visitors to our shire to recycle and divert the amount of material otherwise sent to landfill,” Cr Oberlander said. “Every plastic bottle or container which can be saved from landfill is a step forward in reducing pollution, stopping the harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases which are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Ten tonnes of recycling will be saved from our local landfill as a result of this project, which will have a significant impact on our local environment well into the future.” The project was jointly supported by Sustainability Victoria. Council will complete waste audits over the next six to 12 months to review the projects benefits.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - FORWARD THINKING ... by Robbie Tansel I think it’s vital that we are looking towards the future. We live in a world that is constantly moving and changing. If you had predicted 20 years ago the way the world has changed, people would have been‌mildly surprised. I’m sure we could have seen some of this coming. It’s not that big of a shock. I think it’s very important that we’re planning for the future. I know the young people love YOLO (you only live once). Many of them use YOLO to justify living with only today in mind. Have fun and do everything you want today because you could be dead tomorrow. While I agree that yes, I could be dead tomorrow, it’s probably more likely that I’m going to be alive for a fair while yet so I need to have plans for the future. In my mind tourism is going to be a key industry for our region in the future and we need to take this into consideration with our plans. I have spent some time thinking about some of the biggest tourist areas in the world and what they have in common. When

listing popular tourist spots I came up with Vietnam, England, Germany, France, Europe and emerging tourist areas like Russia and the former Yugoslavia. I then thought deeply about what they have in common. The common denominator I came up with was wars. They have all been the sites of wildly popular and successful wars. With this new knowledge in mind I think we can predict that Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Palestine and Afghanistan will be the big new tourist destinations in twenty years. We’ll all be enjoying the sites of Kabul, hitting the shops in downtown Baghdad and enjoying family holidays in Damascus. We need to embrace this trend to ensure we are right there with them as a tourist destination in 20 years. We want people to be thinking, “Khartoum is nice this time of the year, and the nightlife in Ramallah is wild and crazy, but you really can’t go past that other former warzone turned tourist hotspot, Mount Gambier. If we’re going to take Mount Gambier in this direction one of the first decisions we’ll need to make is who we’re going to war with. Personally I’d like to win so I think that’s something we really need to factor into the decision making. Initially I was leaning towards a smaller town. Weight of numbers would give us a definite advantage. I think we’d need that weight of numbers because I don’t know if we’ve got the killer instinct that you need in a war. I think you need motivation when fighting in a war. Generally you’re desperate because your people are being oppressed or brutalised, or you are being exploited and people are starving. Remember our motivation is we want to get our name out there as a tourist location. Our motivation is very similar to a Kardashian releasing a sex tape. We’re just

attention seeking. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that weight of numbers would give us an advantage, but if we could conduct guerrilla warfare, striking and then returning to our base in Mount Gambier without them knowing where we are, that would also give us an advantage. For this to work, the people we attack would need to not know where we are. “Who doesn’t know where we are?â€? I thought. Then it popped into my head. The Labor government in Adelaide! They’ve still got no idea where Mount Gambier is. They only realise there’s something here when they can use it to raise revenue for their mismanagement of the State’s finances. And they’ve already sold anything of value‌although I think we should keep a really close eye on Larry the Lobster to make sure they don’t forward sell him. So it’s settled. We will declare war on Adelaide to ensure our tourist hotspot future. I love it when a plan comes together. If you’d like to join Robbie’s 501st regiment, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association opened its 2016 season last Thursday night with a N & J Freight/M.S Hein & Sons Mixed Triples Championship, one week before the commencement of the Mt Gambier Community RSL Pennants. President Andrew Simpson greeted all players and then the association’s patroness Elma Attiwill rolled the first jack before association life member Marie Pedlar rolled the first bowl to officially open the 2016 season. The Mixed Triples Championship followed with 19 team entries, with the team from Post-Tel of Lorraine VanDen Hoogen, Jim Pearson and Craig Pearson defeating the RSL & District team of Kathy Milligan, Bob Milligan and Noel Miller in the first semi final eight shots to five and in the second semi final the Glenburnie team of Marie Pedlar, Kristy Davis and Brad Errock took victory over the rival Glenburnie team of Travis Bourn, Daniel Langdon and Serena Bourn, nine shots to eight. The final was a little one sided with the team of Lorraine VanDen Hoogen, Jim Pearson and Craig Pearson trying there hardest to score a shot but the Glenburnie team of Marie Pedlar, Kristy Davis and Brad Errock were just too classy on the night and claimed the first association championship for the year, the N & J Freight/M.S Hein & Sons Mixed Triples Championship, nine shots to two. In the Consolation Final the combined team of Yahl & Commercial Club members prevailed being Elma Attiwill, Doreen Oakley and John Oakley defeated the hard trying team of Kathy Gray, Milton Chant and Perria Davis, from Glenburnie, to beat them five shots to three.

SUMMER BASKETBALL FLAGS SHARED IN SECBL The premiership count for the summer season of the South East Coast Basketball League stands at Millicent 1, Mount Gambier1, after an outstanding night of basketball at the home of Millicent Magic at te end of last month Millicent women’s teams, Cats and Saints, dominated the competition this season and as a result the Women’s Premiership was Millicent’s before the opening jump ball of the Grand Final. Saints started as pre-match favourites after their impressive second semi-final performance. Cats however kept in touch with Saints with the margin just five points at three quarter time. In the final 10 minutes it was all Saints resulting in a 72-50 win. Leading scorers for Saints were Olivia Fuller 17, Jess Allan and Alana Winter each 14. Alex Walker of Cats scored a game high 25 points, which earned her the MVP of the Grand Final. Accurate shooter Erin Watson scored eight for Cats. One could not have scripted a better conclusion to the Men’s SECBL summer season. The scene was set with Millicent defeating Bulldogs by one point in a cliff hanger second semi-final after the accurate Jed Telfer shot truly from the foul line in the closing seconds. The only difference in the rematch was State Junior Lachie Hunter suited up after being sidelined through injury. The large and vocal crowd was treated to a classic exciting contest as all players were relentless in their desperation to finish winners. There was only a handful of points separating the two sides throughout the game, the biggest margin being six points in the home side’s favour in the early minutes of the third quarter. Quarter by quarter scores were 12-11 and 34-30 Millicent’s way, then 56-53 Bulldogs way at the final break. With one minute on the clock Millicent appeared in control on the back of a four point break. Not to be denied, champion sportsman Simon Berkefeld, in two crucial scores in a match winning second half, set up a one point lead for Bulldogs. At the 25 second mark Millicent missed an opportunity to get back in front, then fouled and sent Hunter to the line where he made one from two to give Bulldogs a win, 70-68.

FOOTBALL - New look competition A new era dawned at the weekend with the newly branded Limestone Coast Football Association hitting the park for this first time in the 2016 season. The name change, most especially the embracing of the label football, was one of the many priorities set out by a post season think tank of the former Western Border Soccer Association, in conjunction with the Football Federation South Australia. Aside from the name change, junior development through the AIA Vitality Mini Roos Program looms as a continuing priority, as well as showcasing the sport with more night games. More than 30 people attended the thinktank that helped form the new association’s modus operandi going forward. The optimism surrounding the new direction of the Limestone Coast Football Association has been tempered by the withdrawal of Gambier City Sharks from the association with a lack of player numbers across all grades impacting the club. But the show does go on and the pre-season Belgiorno Cup kicked off this weekend with Inter hosting Blue Lake, Apollo against Naracoorte Portland displacing their hospitality to visiting Millicent. Centrals was grateful to have the bye given they had round 2 of their FFA match in Adelaide on Saturday.

WARNING ABOUT DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MEDICATION Drivers are being warned about the potential effects of medicines in a new campaign. Limestone Coast Local Government road safety officer Rob Forgan said campaigns to tackle those who drive after taking illegal drugs were being run. “But it is not just illegal drugs which can affect your driving,” he said. “Some medicines may cause drowsiness and impair judgement, increasing the risk of an accident. That is why we are raising awareness of the potential effects of over the counter and prescription medicines on driving ability with this new campaign and I am delighted that pharmacists in the Limestone Coast are helping us to get this message direct to their customers.” Mount Gambier pharmacist Matthew Dixon said it was vital that anyone taking medicine follows the instructions on the safe and proper use of those medications given to them by their doctor and pharmacist. “It is vitally important that people pay particular attention to any warnings given to them by their pharmacist in relation to causing drowsiness or affecting their mental alertness and hence their ability to drive or operate machinery,” he said. If you are concerned about a medicine you have been prescribed by a health professional, do not stop taking the medicine, instead do not drive until you have discussed your concerns with your prescribing health professional or pharmacist.
