COVER - A BUSINESS BUILT ON A STRONG FOUNDATION It’s safe to say limestone is in Barrie Bruhn’s blood. “My mother tells me that at two and a half I was cutting stone with a bread knife under the kitchen table – I basically had my own quarry.” It’s a story that makes it easier to understand how Bruhn Limestone has become a fourth generation family business now celebrating 75 years in business. Although semi retired, Barrie is still often at the office, still helping out quarry manager Brenden Bruhn; sales manager Bruce Russel, based in Adelaide, and national marketing manager Andy Carmody, based in Melbourne. Bruhn Limestone has not only seen a lot of changes in the industry over 75 years, it has also been prepared to move

Phone

with those times and its ability to adapt to the changing needs of the industry, and its superior quality product and service has seen it remain an industry leader. “Things have transitioned from when I first started and before me from when the block stone was delivered and cut on site up until where it is now machine cut precisely at the quarry and delivered direct to site,” Barrie said. Bruhn Limestone started when Barrie’s grandfather used to transport large blocks of stone via horse and cart, and then when Barrie’s father Ern Bruhn returned from World War II he started his own business – Ern Bruhn & Son. Barrie entered the business in the 1960s, as a 16 year old, at the same

time the transition from cutting on site to cutting at the quarry became the norm. Back then, the business mainly sold local, with demand so high, every day there would be a demand to cut and deliver more stone.. The business, which Barrie bought as a 21 year old, is now set to complete its 7000th residential project, with the percentage of local work now a small percentage of the business, with 95 percent of all Bruhn stone sold nationally from Adelaide through to the Gold Coast. It is now the stone of choice for high end properties and if Barrie chose to, he could name drop some household names, which have sourced Bruhn limestone to create their latest dream property. As it has

been since the early days, it is the superior quality of product and superior service that has seen Bruhn remain an industry survivor and leader. Owning a quarry with coloured stone has also meant Bruhn could remain in demand. “Every home is cut to order and to colour,” Barrie said. It has always been important to the business to also ensure it had experts in all fields, including a qualified mason. Bruhn also heads to national home shows in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney and forging relationships with industry leaders in design and building has ensured, Bruhn limestone has remained a product in demand. Bruhn Limestone has also focussed on all aspects of the industry, developing state of the art machinery and systems as research and development has been as critical as the bricks and mortar side of the business. It is a testament to their work ethic, given they are averaging three houses a week nationally but still find time to stay ahead of the game. “We have a great local staff,” Barrie said, with about 15 employees on the books. “We have developed a lot of new products. There’s no business I know that survives if it doesn’t innovate.” Bruhn Limestone has 40 years of supply left in the quarry and no one can say they haven’t got everything possible out of the resource. Like so many industries, Bruhn Limestone has developed ways to use every last drop of its resource using the waste at the quarry to make high grade road base and agricultural lime. Given there used to be 14 quarries in this region at one stage, it is a testament to Bruhn that they are still going strong. www.bruhnlimestone.com.au 295 Commercial Street West, Mount Gambier (08) 8721 8000 Email: andy@bruhn.com.au

AT THE CINEMA

INTERNATIONAL OPERA STARS TO GRACE LOCAL STAGE

KUNG FU PANDA 3 - MARCH 24 Continuing his “legendary adventures of awesomeness”, Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to his home.

It was a huge coup for Mount Gambier when Christine Judd managed to turn her overseas holiday into a stunning night of entertainment at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre with two world renowned opera singers. And the friendship she forged with Australian born Michelle Buscemi (above right) and Mattia Campetti (above left) has also seen a relationship between the talented duo and this region and they are returning again to a one night only performance, school and public workshops and they are also adding tenor Giancarlo Monsalve to the bill, fresh from a 2015 that saw him performing on the major stages of Europe and the United States. Giancarlo will be heading to Mount Gambier after stints on stage in Memphis and New York. Limestone Coast Opera is the small committee behind this growing concept, which Christine is confident will continue to blossom and develop into a major annual event. The trio, which will be performing arias, duets and other songs, will grace the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage on Saturday, March 19 at 7.30pm, and will be accompanied by accomplished pianist Stefano Teani, who is also a

composer. And while Michelle and Mattia always committed to a return trip this year, the fact the couple is tying the knot in Australia, certainly meant they would definitely be in the country to be able to again wow Limestone Coast audiences and to also hold a series of vocal workshops for this region’s talent. The couple has also enlisted the services of much sought after vocal coach and tenor Gary Nardella, who is based in London, to assist with the training sessions. The workshops being on the preceding Wednesday with 100 school children set to be exposed to an introduction to classical music in sessions that will include history, voice control, opera, singing, in general, and acting. “Gary will be fantastic with the kids, he really makes it fun,” Christine said. “Because of the interest with the schools we have added two days of workshops.” There are also group workshops on the program for local vocal talent to take advantage of having such expertise on our doorstep. There has also been an exciting addition to the concert program with 10 local singers taking to the stage with the world class performers to perform the well known aria Amigos Para Sempre (Friends for Life). “Michelle and Mattia have committed to coming back for the next five years so the future is looking fantastic,” Christine said. “They want to give a helping hand to young people, just like they were given a helping hand.” The duo is running similar programs in Italy. Michelle is originally from Melbourne and has performed on return visits home before, but to get this calibre of soprano, and her talented baritone partner Mattia, is an opportunity rarely presented in a regional centre. Adding Giancarlo to the mix is just icing on the cake. Tickets for the March 19 Mount Gambier performance are available at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre or online at www.helpmanntheatre. com.au

ADVERTORIAL - REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AUSTRALIA LIMESTONE COAST - BIO ECONOMY IN FOCUS

Colin Stucley The Limestone Coast Welcomes Innovators in the Bio Economy. The term ‘bio economy’ is being referenced across the globe, but what does it mean? Why is it important? How can we capitalise on the opportunities within the bio economy in the Limestone Coast region? The bio economy is exciting and in broad terms comprises those parts of the economy that use renewable resources from the land and sea – such as crops, forests, fish and animals - to produce food, materials and energy. For regional areas, it offers the chance to create new value chains between sectors, revitalise rural and coastal areas and disused industrial sites and provide regional growth and jobs. To address these issues, and unearth the full spectrum of bio economy topics, Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast (RDALC), in partnership with The Department of Industry Innovation and Science, Office of Green Industries South Australia and the Limestone Coast Local Government Association (LCLGA) are holding an event bringing together leaders in the bio based sector, with regional business and government organisations.

Peng Su The event will take place on Thursday 31st March, City Hall, Main Corner Mount Gambier from 9.45-3.00. Registrations commence at 9.30am. This is a free event, but numbers are limited so to book your place please contact: Taylah Connolly, Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast on (08)8723 1057 or visit www.rdalimestonecoast.org.au for online registration. Keynote Speakers Colin Stucley • Director – Enecon Colin holds a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering and initially worked within oil and gas and agroindustry sectors for fifteen years before commencing with Enecon. He is a long term elected Board Member of Bio Energy Australia. Enecon are bioenergy consultants, and specialise in the commercialisation and use of innovative technologies. Clients include Alcoa, BHP Billiton, Western Power, Cement Australia, CSIRO, Pacific Hydro and Visy. Peng Su • Research Engineer – Flinders University Centre for Marine Bio Product Development

edit - regional redevelopment australia advertorial_PATHS.indd 1

Steve Brewster Peng’s work as a research engineer is focusing on the extraction of biochemical value from biomass waste streams, primarily in seafood, with clients such as seafood processors, aquaculture, pharmaceuticals, health foods, and supplements, cosmetics, agriculture, water utilities and treatment and waste management. In the Limestone Coast region, his research includes supporting processed seaweed being used in a variety of food and pharmaceutical products and being exported across the globe. Steve Brewster • Electrical Design and Commissioning Engineer – ADI Systems ADI Systems has been working in the biogas industry for over 25 years and has over 200 plants in more than 35 countries. ADI builds projects around waste treatment and waste to energy design. The largest proportion of ADI system’s client base is from the food and beverage industry and primary industries. Steve treats every project as different, and customises solutions by discussing important aspects with potential clients and conducts a thorough investigation prior to offering a

Sohum Gandhi proposal. ADI systems also provide follow up projects after commissioning, service agreements and troubleshooting in the following years of operation. Sohum Gandhi • General Manager – Energence Sohum has a Bachelor of Engineering from the University Of Victoria, Canada. Since 2004 he has been working with the energy industry in Australia, helping clients across the country evolve their designs and energy systems. Over the past few years, he has increased his involvement in biomass, in an attempt to provide clients with renewable and low cost energy alternatives. In 2015 Sohum received the Chairman’s Award from the PCA (Protected Cropping Australia), a prestigious award based around 10 years of exceptional service to the industry and contribution to the renewable energy space. Energence focus on providing energy solutions to industries such as agriculture, timber, processing and manufacturing.

Method Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan forced. Grease and line base and side of a 20cm (base measurement) cake pan with non stick baking paper. Sift flour into a large bowl. Rub butter into flour using fingertips until fine crumbs form. Make a well at centre. Add milk to well. Use a flat-bladed knife to mix until evenly moistened, adding a little extra milk if needed. Lightly bring dough together with hands and turn out onto clean surface. Knead very gently and briefly until just smooth. Do not over

knead. Transfer dough to a large sheet of non-stick baking paper. Roll out to a 23cm x 30cm rectangle. Spread top of dough with butter, making sure you spread right to the edges. Combine sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle evenly over butter making sure to reach all ends. Using a large knife, cut rectangle of dough lengthwise into 6 equal strips. Loosely roll up one strip of dough and place at centre of prepared pan (you need to roll dough loosely as the batter will puff and rise on baking). Coil the remaining 5 strips of dough around the centre roll, starting each strip at the end of the previous one to make one large rolled cake. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Stand for 5 minutes in pan. Meanwhile, whisk icing sugar, food colouring and boiling water together until smooth. Transfer scroll to a wire rack. Drizzle over icing mixture. Allow icing to set. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.

GELTWOOD FESTIVAL SET TO IMPRESS OUT & ABOUT 150 year Anniversary of the Founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph • March 19 & 20 Join the Penola Sisters as they celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Saturday 19th - Open Air Mass, Light Lunch, Opening and Blessing of Cameron Home Sunday 20th – Opening and Blessing of “The Porch”, Light Lunch. For more information please call (08) 8737 2092 .

What, who or where is a “Geltwood”? In some languages the term “gelt” or “gilt” means money or gold. The story of Geltwood is certainly one that is treasured by the Limestone Coast community. The Geltwood was a three masted iron hull vessel. Built in Scotland, the Geltwood was shipwrecked not far from Rivoli Bay in June 1876 on its maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne. Sadly, of the 31 passengers and crew, there were no survivors. One of the ship’s anchors stands on Cape Buffon Drive at Southend. Another anchor and memorabilia can be viewed at the Millicent National Trust Living History Museum and further artefacts are on display at the Beachport National Trust Museum. Some 138 years later the Geltwood story continues to capture the imagination of people across the region. Today however, the name “Geltwood” represents a different kind of “ship”. The term is now synonymous with craftsmanship and kinship – two important threads in the fabric of life on the Limestone Coast. In honour of the Geltwood Ship, the festival by the same name is a celebration of craftsmanship, community and creativity. The Festival is coordinated

by a group of volunteers with the assistance of the Wattle Range Council and Millicent Business Association. From novice to expert there is a workshop to suit everyone at the Geltwood Festival so head to the website or facebook page for more details about how you can get involved. And the Millicent district, in general, makes sure there is plenty more going on during the festival as well, so take advantage of the other attractions, including the Mega Playground, Millicent Museum, National Parks and other opportunities to see what the Wattle Range region has to offer.

NARACOORTE TEENAGER ATTENDS LEADERSHIP CAMP

AT THE CINEMA

Naracoorte High School’s William Harris was one of 24 students selected inSouth Australia to attend the 2016 STAR Group Youth Leadership Camp that was held at the Echunga Police Reserve, situated in the Adelaide Hills. The camp is run by the Blue Light Organisation and the South Australia Police. It gains extra funding support from groups such as Lions clubs across the State. The aim of the camp is to foster and encourage young leaders. It is led by Sotuh Australia’s elite SA STAR FORCE and supported by SA Ambulance Service staff, who attend camp to provide care if need arises. This group of highly qualified personnel mentor each participant to bring out the best in them and to assist them to develop, foster and harness their own leadership style. It is a highly prestigious camp and the process to be accepted was not an easy task. Will was one of 24 Year 12 students selected from the more than 130 students that apply each year. “It was a unique, incredible and rewarding experience,” Will said. “It is 100% the best thing I have ever done in my life. The friendships we have forged in this group of 24 should and will last a life time. The exceptional leaders from SA Star Force can only be applauded for continuing with this program. I cannot thank them enough for giving me this opportunity and experience.” Will, who is also school captain, is also in the limelight as part of the Duke Of Edinburgh program and is heading

It has become the lead public school in South Australia, according to State Manager of the Duke of Edinburgh Program, Glen Christie. The school now boasts more than 50 students being involved in the program with many more students expressing an interest in participating in this internationally recognised award. Coordinator of the program and Principal of Naracoorte High School, Kym Grant, together with co-coordinators, Hillary Trotter, Gemma Files and Nick Lang, are excited by the level of commitment and diligence the students have demonstrated over the past 12 months and are looking forward to providing even more unique and challenging experiences to the students in 2016.

INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER TO HEADLINE BREAKFAST Join United Way Glenelg and Committee for Portland as we welcome Holly Ransom to Portland at their annual Administrative Professional Breakfast Friday, May 6, at 7am Employers from all over Portland & district will have the opportunity to say thank you to the men and women who are the backbones of their businesses: giving their administration staff the chance to be inspired and indulged at this annual breakfast. The breakfast is an extremely popular event that helps support the wider community; all proceeds go towards the work of United Way Glenelg and the programs we in turn provide funding for. Holly Ransom discovered her purpose at the age of just 10. She learnt to “own the word leader” after being put on a leadership program at 15 and finding herself in awe of the students she was working with. Feeling lucky to be there and a little out of her depth, it taught her the valuable contribution she could make -- as long as she stepped up. Still in her mid-twenties, the commerce-law graduate has since gone on to create a consulting business, chair the 2014 Y20 Summit, serve as the world’s youngest Rotary president, was the youngest person to be named in Australia’s ‘100 Most Influential Women’, run a few marathons, and has had a personal chat with President Barack Obama. Holly has been named Young Volunteer of the Year, West Australian of the Year and worked with the Dalai Lama on a peace charter. She has featured on ABC’s ‘Q&A’, Reuters, Bloomberg Asia, Channel 7 News and Channel 10’s ‘The Project’, and is renowned for her commentary on intergenerational economic and social challenges. Tickets are $50 per person, $450 table of 10, $360 table of 8. This breakfast will sell out fast so don’t miss out - BOOK NOW South West Tafe Administrative Professional of the Year Often the person most taken for granted within any workplace is the person doing all the administration, yet they are actually the backbone of any organisation. She or he usually has a finger on the pulse and keeps track of all the minute details that make a business run smoothly. And very often their dedication extends outside their workplace into involvement in some way with the community. To celebrate these unsung heroes, United Way Glenelg in conjunction with South West TAFE call for nominations NOW for the Administrative Professional of the Year. People from Portland and district are encouraged to nominate the person they think deserves recognition for going above and beyond in their role as an Administrative Professional. The award is presented at the annual Administrative Professionals Breakfast. NOMINATIONS CLOSE FRIDAY, APRIL 22.

GOLF DAY RAISES MORE THAN $20,000 Golfers and community supporters have helped to raise more than $20,000 for Portland District Health’s planned Women’s and Children’s Health Precinct. Former AFL star Robert `Dipper’ DiPierdomenico was special guest at the PDH charity golf day and dinner on March 4 that attracted strong support from the community. PDH community liaison Carolyn Malseed said it was a great event that raised $20,500. “We had a sold-out group of 104 golfers take part and then 120 people at the dinner,” Ms Malseed said. “There was a wonderful feel to the day and we again received wonderful community support to make it a fund-raising success.” Ms Malseed said the Portland community had rallied behind the day. “We had great support from the community, including those who took part in the golf event, our sponsors and the golf club,” she said. “Everyone had a great time and enjoyed interacting with `Dipper’.” PDH CEO Chris Giles said the new precinct would be a dedicated area for the provision of women’s and children’s healthcare. “PDH really appreciates the support of the community to make this annual golf day such a success,” Ms Giles said. “Not only is a great activity, it helps to raise funds for important services and facilities for our community.” Ms Giles added that she would like to hear ideas from the community for future celebrity guests at the event. People with ideas can contact PDH on pdh@swarh.vic.gov.au The annual charity golf day has now raised $80,000 over the past four years. Money raised at previous events has been used to purchase vital equipment for the emergency department and the redevelopment of various departments including palliative care and cancer units.

CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR 2016 BUSINESS AWARDS The Small Business Victoria Southern Grampians Shire 2016 Business Awards are now open. Now in its 20th year, the awards are firmly established as the premier event in the Southern Grampians Shire business community says Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Manager, Hugh Koch. “Over the past 20 years, the business awards have developed into a highlight on the Southern Grampians Shire’s business calendar with dozens of businesses being recognised each year” Mr Koch said. “The awards are a fantastic way for businesses to receive recognition for their hard work and benchmark themselves against a set of best-practice principles to grow their business”. Entries for the awards are now open and will close on Friday, April 15. Judging will take place in May, with the awards presentation evening set for Friday, June 24, at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre. The post-awards workshop, which provides feedback to entrants, will be held on Tuesday 12 July from 12pm-2pm. Small Business Victoria has assumed the role of major sponsor of the Awards following the departure of long-time sponsor Powercor. The Ace Radio network continues their involvement of 20 years and will be media partners in the event with the Hamilton Spectator.

ST PATRICK’S DAY CONCERT Celebrate St Patricks Day with a performance by Irish songstress Áine Tyrrell at Hamilton Gallery on St Patrick’s Day, the Thursday at 5:30pm. Áine will play a mix of Irish tunes and her own songs alongside Nick Martin on Uilleann pipes, the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. Nick is widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest exponents of the Uilleann pipes, gathering notoriety both in Australia and Ireland. Áine has recently performed alongside Paul Kelly, Shane Howard, Pauline Scanlon, Declan O’Rourke and John Spillane on the national concert tour for Exile, an exclusive line-up of outstanding IrishAustralian artists. In 2014 Áine received Queenscliff Music festivals ‘Emerging Talent 2014’ award. Áine’s music has grown from traditional Irish roots to a global contemporary sound, still cradling the homeland spirit, and dusted with the salt of the West Coast of Ireland. She is a singer-songwriter with a sound transcending convention, at times tribal, at times fragile. The St Patrick’s Day concert will be complemented with a small display of Irish made decorative arts from the Hamilton Gallery Collection. Objects manufactured from such factories including Belleek Pottery and Waterford Crystal, Ireland will couple with the Irish tunes on the evening. The one-time-only concert will be held at Hamilton Gallery on St Patrick’s Day, Thursday 17 March starting at 5:30pm. Tickets are $15 and are available from gallery reception.

GLENELG LEADS STATE EXPORT BOOM New data has shown Glenelg Shire is leading Victoria’s export boom as the source of almost nine per cent of the state’s international trade. A total of $43 billion worth of goods and services was exported from Victoria last year – the highest in more than four years. More than $3.6 billion of this product was sourced in Glenelg Shire. Bulk goods from the Port of Portland aided the economic boom with more than $2 billion worth of cargo exported in 2015, led by growing timber and mineral sands exports. An additional $1.6 billion worth of gross domestic product was exported from the Glenelg region, dominated by agriculture and manufacturing content. The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed Victoria’s goods exports totalled $11.1 billion in the December quarter – an increase of 3.7 per cent and the highest of all mainland states. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said Portland had a key role to play in the state’s export growth. “It is clear to see that Portland, and the wider Glenelg region, is helping position Victoria as the nation’s export leader, further strengthening our state’s economy and supporting local jobs,” Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said. “To ensure this boom time continues it is paramount that investment is made to fix our broken freight

roads. Currently 95 per cent of products are delivered to the port by road. It these roads fail, so will our port and the thousands of jobs it supports in our community.” A total of 6.46 million tonnes of cargo left Portland’s docks last year with plantation forestry products, mineral sands and aluminium dominating trade. More than 60 per cent of this cargo was delivered to China to support its growing demand for consumer products. Port of Portland CEO Jim Cooper said Portland was the world’s biggest wood chip exporter. He said without road improvements in the near future, the export industry would be “jeopardised”. “Forestry and mineral sands are world scale industries which support thousands of Victorian jobs. We already know what we have to do to fix these roads. There is a plan in place and the State Government just need to get on with it,” Mr Cooper said. Glenelg Shire has identified that all key freight routes leading to the port require immediate works, including the Portland Ring Road, Henty Highway Myamyn to Heywood, Princes Highway Dartmoor to Portland, Portland-Nelson Road, and Casterton-Portland Road.

TENNIS & PENNANT BOWLS GRAND FINALS RESULTS & PHOTOS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, AS WELL AS ALL OTHER WEEKEND SPORT ACTION.

Last yeat, Imogen Walker was idenitifed as a development player when she represented South Australia at the Under 15 national championships and this time round, she was one of the team leaders, having a superb tournament as pitcher, while also spending some time at first base and in the outfield. Imogen (pictured during local finals action earlier this month) was also cool when the pressure was on. Mirroring her form in the local domestic competition, Imogen batted consistently well at the national champoinships and is set to continue to pursue honours at the higher level as she now moves into the Under 17 age group for the 2016/17 representative season. Imogen’s team finished third at the national championships. Jenna Burston, Taylor Wilsmore & Amber Hood to come.

GOLF Veterans hit the greens for two outings

South East veteran golfers have enjoyed two outings recently, taking advantage of the continued warm weather. Forty golfers made their way to Port MacDonnell at the end of last month and were rewarded with some good scores. Phil “Tigers” Hunter took out First Division with 40 points, from Peter Waters on 39, and Wayne Dunford 37. Second civision was won by Ken Milsop with an amazing 44 points, runners up being decided with a count back on 40, between Trevor Hutchesson and Bryan Coe. Trevor’s round was spectacular for a second nine of 26 points, which should have been more, except he threw out the oars on the last to take only two points. He had hit the pin hard with his second on the 4th hole, missed a 20cm putt, and took a 4 for 4, chipped out on the 6th, 3 for 3, then on the 13th his long shot in was missing the green right, took a 90 deg kick and finished on the green close, 5 for 4, but nearly 4 for 5. The ball rundown went to 34 points. The group then headed to Attamurra earlier this month, with 62 taking part in the annual Ambrose for the Vets sponsored by Davis Golf. A great day out won by a nett 57 from Tony McGregor, Peter Johnstone, Robert Thompson and Ray Thiele, 57.1 was second, from David Douglas, Sam Mainwaring, John Menz, John Millhouse and Graham Sunderland, then third was a 57.5 from Jim Hyland, Herman Vander Heul, Wayne Dunford and Barry Brook. If you didn’t get a 69 gross, you weren’t in the hunt. NTPs were won by John Menz and Brian Amos, who both had really good close ones. Raffle winners were Roger Gulin, Lyndsay Copeman, Bryan Coe,John Kirby, Wayne Dunford and Keith Thrussell. As this was an annual meeting, the best score for the year was Ian Telfer’s 46 points, and there was a magnificent Magnum of Katnook’s Cabernet Sauvignon each given to Wayne Dunford and John Howe for the ultimate shot, a Hole in One scored throughout the year. The next event is at Beachport on March 21.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - WORD TO YOUR MOTHER... by Robbie Tansel

COME ‘N’ TRY

Every year the dictionary adds some new words. This is apparently because new words are being invented. Without any sort of input from me, we therefore end up with words like “selfie”, “lol” or “phablet” being recognised parts of our language. A phablet, by the way, is a smartphone that has ambitions of being a tablet. Yeah, that deserves its own word. I’m bringing this up on the basis that I think we’re getting to the point where we might have too many words. Surely there are only so many words we need. With people less and less smart, we’re making things very difficult for them by adding extra words. They really haven’t mastered the words we currently have, for example somethink. With this in mind, I’d like to suggest we stick with the amount of words we currently have. I understand that people might like to add new words that seem appropriate each year. To keep the number of words constant after these additions, we’ll all have to vote and decide what words to get rid of. I think there are some obvious choices like video and cassette. Clearly no longer necessary. Add to that overhead projector. Australian car manufacturers. Ethical politicians. Sorry. Not technically words. I just got a bit carried away with things that don’t exist anymore. Apart from words that are no longer relevant due to technological advances, I think we have other words we can get rid of. Words like manners, indicator and service are no longer necessary in our 2016 world. I think we could easily get rid of the word yolo. I know yolo (an abbreviation of you only live once) only joined the dictionary a couple of years ago but it’s clearly run its course and we don’t need it. Another word that is not as necessary as it used to be is bewigged. With modern hair transplant technology, who is

wearing a wig anymore? Judges. Do we really need to keep a word that is only relevant to such a small demographic. We can easily just say that they have a wig on. I think we could easily get rid of the words hipster and boyband, but only if we get rid of the concepts that those words relate to. We can agree that would be a good thing, can’t we? I’d also like to suggest that while we’re getting rid of unnecessary words we should probably get rid of some names too. Back in the day, there were only seven names to choose from for naming your baby. I think this was best for everyone. I found choosing a baby name quite stressful because there were just too many to pick from. It took us weeks. If there were only seven, I think we could have sorted that in the ad breaks of NCIS. I’m not good with names either. I can never remember the name of the person that I’ve just met. If I had a one in seven chance of guessing someone’s name, that would help me considerably. Apart from those very valid reasons we could also get rid of stupid names. No more Novalees, Beppos or Zhadens. No more Selebratys, Hayzleys, or Maicols. Lots of Jimmys, Matthews and Robbies. Although I think we know there’s really only one Robbie. Having said all of that, I don’t think it would hurt to add some more curse words to the language. We really don’t have a great range of them and the ones we currently have don’t have the same impact they used to. And “jerp that” I say. I don’t jerpin think we should just let that happen. If you have some words you’d like me to add to the banned list, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com
