All your garage door needs from a local expert It has been a long journey for Jason and Michelle Sims but well worth it. Like many people who go down the renovation path, things always seem to take so much longer than what you anticipate and that was the case when the Mount Gambier couple took on J & M Door Services. “We thought renovating the premises would take a month and it basically took a year,” Michelle said. “We did it all ourselves and were lucky to have the support and assistance of our families.” They bought the Wireless Road East premises in November last year to house their business that will celebrate two years this coming February. Despite being young in business terms, J & M Door Services has already built a reputation for reliability and honesty and when it comes to your garage door needs you need look no further. With more than a decade of experience in garage door maintenance and installation, the professional J & M Door Services team can assist with the repair, replacement or servicing of your garage door. Customer service is the foundation on which this local business was built, priding themselves on the fact that the guy who measures your door, installs it as well. And while Jason is the man on site to assist with all your garage door needs, Michelle (pictured above) is the first port of call in the office, answering general enquiries and providing quotes and any account queries. J & M Door Services are the only local authorised Gliderol Garage Doors distributor servicing South East South Australia and Western Victoria and with Gliderol offering a wide range of quality continuous sheet curtain roller doors; sectional overhead

garage doors and industrial continuous sheet curtain roller doors, J & M Door Services can cater to both residential and commercial needs. J & M Door Services also has a strong focus on maintenance – an often neglected part of looking after your home and business that can actually save you money in the long run. Your garage door is one of the most heavily-used objects in your home, considering that you probably use it at least a couple of times per day. With that much use, it’s probably to be expected that it will break down occasionally but regular maintenance can save you costly repairs than can run into the thousands. Lack of up-keep combined with exposure to the elements can sometimes cause garage doors to fail prematurely but this can so often be avoided if a good maintenance

plan is put in place to ensure your door operates to its optimum in all weather conditions and J & M Door Services repairs and services all models of manual and automatic doors. They can also assist in handling insurance claims. When it comes to repairs, Jason has it all covered from garage doors stuck open or stuck shut; damaged door panels; damage to tracks, rollers, springs or a malfunctioning garage door opener. So for all your garage door needs call into 40 Wireless Road East today or call (08)8723 2609 or email sales@jmdservices. com.au.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Relevant reality... by Robbie Tansel You may have picked up recently that I’m not that big a fan of reality television. There are many reasons for this ranging from its lack of realism to the fact the people are just so damn annoying. I have decided that I can cope a little bit

Call us n to a rra now g a FREE e hea ring test

better with reality TV when there is some local interest for me. Case in point is the current appearance of Mount Gambier’s own Louise Adams on the X Factor show. I’ve never met her but it’s nice to think that one of our own is making good in the world. Likewise it added some interest having Sam Malseed on So You Think You Can Dance. I vaguely remember someone from Mount Gambier being on the Biggest Loser a number of years ago. I think there might have been another local on the TV show Farmer Wants A Wife too. With this in mind, I’d like to suggest some other locals that all the television production companies might like to get onto their shows so I’d enjoy them a little more. I’d like to start with Masterchef, a show I find particularly annoying…

until they get Chris and Mary from the East Gambier Fish and Chip shop on as contestants. I can just imagine Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan asking, “So what have you prepared for us, Chris and Mary?” “A yiros with garlic sauce, hamburger with the lot, five dollars of chips and two potato cakes with chicken salt,” Chris would answer confidently, before Mary passed them a couple of red frogs to give to their kids. Television magic. After that, we’ll need to find someone to go on Survivor. This one’s a bit tougher. I decided in the end that I’d like to make Survivor a bit more Hunger Games-ish. Let’s make them fight to the death and then get Premier Jay Weatherill entered. Strictly speaking not a local but I’ve got a feeling that plenty of us would look forward to watching. I figure we’re due for another contestant on the Biggest Loser. Looking around the streets I’m sorry to say there are plenty of likely candidates. I also tossed up our local member Mr Pasin who looks like

he’s been dining out nicely on our taxes in Canberra’s best eateries. I eventually settled on myself though. Let me explain. I recently told you that I’d lost ten kilos in the last twelve months. I managed to put four of them back on in one week. Let me say that again. One year to lose ten kilograms. One week to put four on. “How did you achieve such an impressive feat, Robbie?” I hear you ask. I’ll tell you. I was in Adelaide for a few days of training early in the week. I had all you can eat pizza on the Sunday night. I followed that up with takeaway breakfast the next morning, a takeaway meal for lunch, more takeaway for tea, pancakes for breakfast on the Tuesday, another all you can eat meal on the Tuesday night, more pancakes on the Wednesday morning, some takeaway chips on the drive home from Adelaide that night, another takeaway meal on the Thursday night in Mount Gambier, more pancakes on the Friday morning, takeaway lunch on Friday, and then I had more fatty food at the show on the Saturday, as well as a bag of fairy floss. “Only four kilograms, Robbie?” I hear you enquire and, “Do you have your private health cover paid up ready for when you have your heart attack?” I think a little stint on the Biggest Loser won’t hurt me. To be honest though, I’d still like to see some original new programmes that aren’t “reality based”. To vote for Louise Adams, don’t email me at robbietansel@gmail. com

LOCAL Merino set to celebrate Christmas If you are looking for a fun day out for the whole family with entertainment for everyone at a low cost then the Merino Community Festival is for you. Following four very successful festivals, where more than 500 people passed through the gates each year, the committee is enthusiastically organising a bigger and better 2015 Festival. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, November 28, from 1pm at the Merino Recreation Reserve. The kids entertainment will be a highlight again at a very affordable price. There will be an abundance of activities including Zorb balls, UFO Cars, a dunk tank, bungee run, jumping castles, mobile zoo, merry-go-round and face painting. A highlight this year is the inclusion of a new ride known as Spin Out Thrill Ride which is sure to please the older kids. Once again the Hamilton Motorcycle Club will be holding a race day and non-members are able to pay a day member fee to join in the races and enjoy the picturesque course at Merino. The Quickshear starts at 6pm and from last year’s outstanding number of entrants there’s sure to be more competitors this year that will compete for a substantial amount of prize money. There will be a large variety of market stalls to grab a bargain and lots of food stalls to tempt the taste buds, bar facilities and live music all day by local musicians. The success of the past four Festival’s has allowed the committee to donate more than $8000 to several community, school and sporting groups from

MILLICENT

Merino, Digby, Casterton and Hamilton who were involved in some way in the festival. So entry for $10 per adult and $15 wrist bands for kids, which allows them unlimited access to all kids’ entertainment, you would have to say this is the best value festival in the Western District. You can also check out our website at www.merinocf. weebly.com Any enquiries please email merinocommunityfestival@hotmail.com and like us on Facebook.

LOCAL Sensitive Santa returns to the Mount Gambier Marketplace The Limestone Coast’s largest retail shopping centre is getting ready to roll out the red carpet when Santa Claus comes to town next month, but the big man in red and his reindeers won’t be the only VIP guests. Mount Gambier

Marketplace will be offering Sensitive Santa visits for families with special needs during two exclusive sessions in the lead-up to Christmas. Centre manager Andrew Tye says the doors will be opened out of normal trading hours, in order to avoid long queues, crowds and excessive noise. “Having a photo with Santa can be a difficult thing for families of children facing illness or other challenges, so we are offering them their very own visit away from peak-hour groups, in a wheelchair and pram-friendly environment,” he said. “Some of these children will be meeting Santa for the very first time, and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to give families such a memorable gift this festive season.” The Sensitive Santa sessions will be held for two hours prior to trading on Sunday, December 13, and Sunday, December 20, from 8-10am. The 10 minute visits are free of charge, but booking is essential by contacting centre management during business hours on (08)8724 8798. Mount Gambier’s Gordon Education Centre is among those applauding the Marketplace initiative, with principal Robert Barton describing it as an “excellent idea”. “Some of our students come from quite isolated environments, and this is an opportunity for them to access something a little more mainstream,” he said. “Sensitive Santa was a welcome opportunity for children, their parents, carers and siblings last year, by offering the visits again Mount Gambier Marketplace creates a predictable environment for students, relieving

stress and anxiety that any new situation can cause.” The Mount Gambier Marketplace Sensitive Santa experience is one of the key focuses in a broader campaign of exciting, community-based events and attractions this festive season. “Our theme for this year is ‘Christmas 2015 – Where it’s all about giving!’ and while the Sensitive Santa experience really sums up the warm sense of community that exists in our regional city, we will also be adding to the magic of the season by creating additional events that celebrate the spirit of Christmas and engage as many people as possible,” said Mr Tye. Dates for your calendar • December 12 – 10am-3pm. Santa’s big arrival! Live performances, free giveaways, & gifts from Santa for each child. Live radio broadcast, with $1000 shopping spree winner drawn. • December 12 December 24 - Santa daily from 10am-2pm. •December 13 8-10am - Sensitive Santa. Bookings essential. • December 1 to December 24 -11 am4pm. Community Gift Wrapping - local clubs and sporting groups will receive proceeds from a gold coin gift wrapping service.

LOCAL National record equalled at Anden bonanza by Ian Turner Despite another poor season that was deteriorating daily, the Donnan family received long overdue reward for the quality rams from three breeds they have been consistently presenting at their annual sale each year at Woomelang. In this, their 20th annual sale held last month, one of their Anden White Suffolk rams achieved an equal national White Suffolk record price of $36,000, ensuring that milestone will be long remembered. This price was first achieved in 2005 when the Detpa Grove stud sold a ram for that amount, considered by many as unlikely to be beaten with more top rams being produced in the White Suffolk breed each year. However, with quiet determination, Anden stud principal Andrew Donnan has been strongly focussed on producing sires that can make outstanding contributions to the breed. $28,500 at Adelaide Elite Sale in 2008 was getting towards that high mark, but seemingly travel to Woomelang in the Victorian Mallee was considered too far by many, with last year’s undervalued $7500 top being an example. That was all corrected this year when as many as 25 stud breeders at last recognised the quality on offer, probably sparked by Anden winning both the Interbreed Trade Weight and Export Weight Lamb Production Pair of Rams classes at the recent Adelaide Royal, where assessment for both phenotype and genotype come into play. It was Anden 140298, one of the winning Trade

Weight Pair that caught the eye of many stud breeders, but in particular two bidders who were prepared to go to very high levels to purchase it. An August drop youngster sired by Burwood 110959, the sire that was purchased in partnership with Detpa Grove in 2012 for $21,000, A140298 also had outstanding high accuracy performance figures of 17.42 post weaning weight, -0.84 post weaning fat and 1.97 post weaning eye muscle, culminating in a Carcase Plus index of 214.49 and a Lamb 2020 dollar index of 114.96. While many were in admiration, it quickly became a battle of the two key bidders. Nathan Ditchburn, Golden Hills stud, Kukerin, WA travelled over to the sale with his stud advisor, Mark Edwards and Elders Stud Stock Manager for WA, Tim Spicer, determined to pick up this top stud ram he has been following the progress of for a quite a while. Likewise, Ian Kyle, Ashley Park stud, Bairnsdale saw the ram in Adelaide and felt it would work really well in topping off his now high standard stud flock. Ian’s son Reagan was at the sale and on the phone to his father who had other commitments on the day, and with the pledged support of semen share partners in the Mullinger Park and Seriston studs, dug in for the bidding duel. However it was Nathan Ditchburn who was more determined and won the battle. “I haven’t ever seen a ram that is so well put together, being beautifully balanced, having

a great topline and an exceptional hindquarter and leg set. To support that, his combination of performance figures, especially the high growth and good muscling, made him a ram we just had to have to take us to the next level,” Nathan said. Nathan said the ram, which is a new bloodline for the stud run in conjunction with his wife Julie, will be used in an extensive AI program, plus naturally over about 80 ewes. They also hoped to recoup some of their investment in semen sales. While this was clearly the highlight of the sale, there was also plenty of other bidding action. The line-up of the 21 specially selected Anden White Suffolk rams, 99 White Suffolk flock rams, 27 Viewdale Poll Dorset flock rams and 9 Kerangie Suffolk rams was presented in wonderful order and was commended by Elders auctioneer Ross Milne pre-sale. The performance levels of the Donnan family’s sheep are exceptional as shown by all 21 specially selected White Suffolk rams being over 200 on Carcase Plus index and 81% of the flock rams also at that level. The second top price of $9000 was paid by the Hull family’s Kattata Well stud, Pt Kenny, SA for Anden 140310, a big powerful ram with a Carcase Plus index of 220.57 and was in the winning Export Production Pair in Adelaide as well as winning his individual class. The Hulls also purchased last year’s top priced ram at $7500. His winning pair mate, A140208 opened the sale

R

R

proceedings and went for a bargain price of $3500, the happy purchaser being Max Treweek, Lauridale stud, Wakool, NSW. Max later picked up another great value ram in A140034, the highest C+ index ram in this draft at 221.03 for just $4000. Brian and Troy Fisher, Ashmore White Suffolk stud, Wasleys, SA chimed in with two top purchases. They paid $5000 for A140025, by A120041, and then were pushed to $8000 for A140219Tri, sired by the extreme performance sire, A130288. David Pipkorn, Detpa Grove stud, Jeparit and Andrew Frick, Gypsum Hill stud, Padthaway, combined forces to purchase A140293, another A120041 son also for $8000. Peter and Rhonda Malseed, Darlot Park stud, Tyrendarra paid $5500 for A140255, the Adelaide pair mate of the top priced ram, then picked up the last ram in the draft, A140330 for just $2500, both these being sons of Anden 120041, the sire of two thirds of this draft of specially selected rams. Robert and Paula Gray, Gray Glen stud, Gooloogong, NSW

were the volume buyers in this draft with three purchases at $3000, $2500 and $4000, all Anden 120041 sons. John and Anna Hayes, Glenfinnan stud, Young, NSW were the other multiple stud buyers with purchases at $3000 and $5000, also for sons of A120041. The equal record ram was not the only one heading to the far west from this sale. Stacey Bush, purchasing for her and husband Robert’s Rhos Gwyn stud, Mt Barker, WA paid $4000 for A140014, a son of DG120657. In the surprise steal of the day, Keith Ladyman, Kantara stud, Dumbleyoung, WA combined forces with Bruce Buswell, Matilda Downs stud, Mt Barker, WA to purchase A140309 for just $3000. Rated by Andrew Donnan as his best ram of the drop and used in the stud as a ram lamb, it suffered a pre-sale injury but had recovered fully by this sale. Operating on his own, Keith Ladyman also picked up the full brother of the record priced ram A140301 for $2000 and A140289 (by A120041) for $2100 from the flock ram draft in a day of high value purchases for him.

cont. page 28 Above - Pictured after the successful Anden ram sale are Gordon Last, Garvald Vale Partnership, Hamilton, who purchased 5 rams; Andrew and Joel Donnan; and George Grimwade, Kurkurak Pastoral Co, Glenthompson, who purchased 15 rams from the White Suffolk flock ram draft. lifestyle1.net | 24 edit - anden.indd 1

The Stroke Risk Analysis involves a process similar to taking a blood pressure, providing results on arterial elasticity and central heart (aortic) pressures which indicate the risk of cardiac events, such as a stroke. Lifestyle factors are a major risk factor in heart disease, and even just a family history of early cardiac event can be reason enough to be assessed.

Chemist King strive to provide additional assessments of your health, which we offer regularly in-store. As your conditions can develop with age with other lifestyle factors being a major contributor, having your risk assessment done will offer you that peace of mind.

The Bone Density assessment is done through an ultrasound of the heel, determined to be 97% accurate compared to X-Ray (DEXA). This test reveals fracture risk and indicates bone density a measurable factor in osteoporosis. Brochures are available in store which highlight many factors which can erode bone density over time.

Both tests are non-invasive and serve as useful tools to provide your GP with extra information. Early detection is vital in recognising and preventing any possible adverse events.

Osteoporosis test by simple safe ultrasound of the heel gives 97% accuracy.

ON THIS DAY NOVEMBER 21 • 1877 Thomas Edison announces his invention of the phonograph, a machine that can record and play sound. He also invented the motion picture camera and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.

AT THE THEATRE Nick Charles – The Acoustic Guitar Spectacular HAMILTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, HAMILTON November 20 The Acoustic Guitar Spectacular features three of Australia’s finest guitarists, singer-songwriters and will be a truly stellar evening with these world renowned musicians. Nick Charles is a class act revered by peers and critics as one of the finest pickers and players in the land. Various guitars and mandolins become one with him as he caresses the great blues classics from the strings. Playing alongside Nick will be Geoff Achison and Paul Wookey - both are consummate entertainers.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear

Frames are not just about fashion While fashion influences most people’s choice of frame, practical matters should be considered. What to look for: • sturdy construction and a good quality finish. A good quality frame will last for years. A poor quality frame will cause annoyance; • well-mounted nosepads that don’t rattle; • Spring-loaded hinges. They allow the frame to flex and help prevent it going out of adjustment. Fitting Your frame’s fit is the most important factor. It doesn’t matter how good a frame looks if you always have to push it back up your nose. A frame must: • be appropriate for your prescription and for your lenses; • be large enough to fit both the distance and near portions of multifocal lenses; • fit the bridge of your nose without slipping. Finished spectacles are heavier than the frame alone. Different frames fit different shaped noses; • not rest on your cheeks. Smile with the frame on - if it rides up, then it’s sitting on your cheeks, not your nose. If you have a strong prescription, choose a frame with smaller lenses. Larger lenses are thicker and heavier. A fine, delicate frame is also not appropriate for these high prescriptions. They have difficulty supporting thicker lenses. If you’re active or wear spectacles while exercising, then a smaller frame may be better to prevent fogging. Metal frames with adjustable nosepads

are often the best solution for a difficultto-fit face. A frame to match your face General rules when choosing a frame: • Frames should not project above your eyebrows. • A frame that sits high on your face produces a ‘surprised’ expression. • A ‘round’ face is better suited to angular frames that are wider than they are deep. Your face will look narrower. • A ‘square’ face is better suited to oval frames. Avoid angular frames. They accentuate angular features. • A ‘heart-shaped’ face (tapering towards the chin) is better suited to rimless or frames with lower outer corners. Avoid wide frames or ‘cats-eye’ styles. • A ‘triangular’ face (broader at the jaw than at the eyeline) needs a strong, dominant frame the same width as the jaw to provide balance. Why are some frames more expensive than others? The cost of frames is partially based on fashion, with ‘designer-labels’ often costing more. Generally price is also related to the quality of the materials use in the construction and the quality of workmanshio that goes into making the frame Metal frames, which require more skilled operations in their production, are generally more expensive. For example, titanium frames are almost indestructible, but cost considerably more than regular metal frames, while frames with high quality gold finishes will also cost more.

LOCAL National record equalled at Anden bonanza by Ian Turner (from page 24) AC & PM McDonald, through Rodwells Edenhope paid $2500 for another ram with the highest C+ index in the entire catalogue at 227.05 out of the flock rams for their stud. The 21 selected White Suffolk rams averaged a wonderful $5905, up $3983 on last year’s undervalued result. Two of the nine Kerangie Suffolk rams were also offered as specially selected stud rams. Steve, Ros, Greg and Selena Funke, Bundara Downs stud, Bordertown, SA purchased K140532 for $3500 for their relatively new Suffolk stud, while Anthony Hurst, Seriston stud, Avenue Range, SA paid just $2000 to secure K140530, a ram used in the stud as a ram lamb. Both were sired by homebred sire Kerangie 120003. In the outstanding White Suffolk flock ram draft, the season affected bidding somewhat with more buyers keeping their bidding in a strict budget range of $600 to $1000. Signals installed for new Portland helipad Portland drivers will soon need to stop for low-flying emergency helicopters at the new helipad which will be officially opened next month. Portland District Health advises that the newly installed flashing red traffic signals in Bentinck Street for the Blue Ribbon Foundation Emergency Helipad are operational. The signals have been tested and commissioned, and the helicopter procedure manual is being finalised which means that in the next couple of weeks the lights are able to be used to stop Bentinck Street traffic while the emergency helicopter hovers across the road to the landing pad on the health service site. An official opening for the Blue Ribbon Foundation Emergency Helipad will be held on site at 11am on December 8. This will be a whole community

celebration with more details to follow in coming weeks. The signals have been installed to provide for the safe arrival and departure of the emergency helicopter and will only be operational when the helicopter is either inbound or taking off from the PDH Helipad. They are a major traffic control item and must be obeyed by motorists and pedestrians. When operating, motorists can expect delays and detours via Percy Street from Tyers Street or Fern Street could be used as alternatives to Bentinck Street. Portland District Health CEO Chris Giles said it was a major achievement to see the project move closer to fruition, and the whole community needs to be congratulated for making it happen. “This has been a real community driven effort,” Ms Giles said.“We hope the public understands

the need for the traffic signals and will follow the new road rules. The emergency helicopter is a vital service enabling us to safely transfer patients needing life-saving care to tertiary-trauma facilities” Ms. Giles said. The traffic lights will only be activated when the helicopter is entering or departing from PDH. This usually happens about once a month but it could happen at any time night of day. Glenelg Shire Mayor Max Oberlander said the helipad installation on the health service grounds was a fantastic outcome for the community, allowing for the transfer of critically ill patients and maintaining the recreational amenity of the ploughed field. “Our community campaigned tirelessly for this emergency helicopter and it is wonderful to see this project come to fruition,” he said. “Every second is vital when it comes to saving lives and we can all know that this helipad will make a real difference in saving local lives.”

LOCAL Local trainer wins ski challenge Mount Gambier is not a city renowned for its snow-topped mountains, but a local man hasn’t let that stop him from claiming victory in an elite worldwide ski competition. The Concept2 SkiErg 1,000m World Sprints ran from November 6-8, with competitors in all corners of the globe completing the distance and logging their result codes online for verification. The Skierg makes the very physically and mentally demanding Nordic skiing available to everyone, providing a low impact, high aerobic workout. Local trainer Scott Thomas took out the 40-49 age group sprint in a time of 3:00.5 – four seconds clear of his nearest competitor, Jorgen Nilsson of Sweden. This time also placed the 42 year old third overall, behind 32 year old Australian Olympic rower Sam Loch and well known US trainer Dylan Freed, 29. In an added bonus, Mr Thomas’ clients Wendy Gray also placed second in the 40-49 age group category with a time of 3:50.8 and Angela Georgiou in fifth for the 30-39 year olds, in 3:53.7. Winners of each age group will receive custom engraved cow bells, to help ring in the upcoming Northern ski season. Mr Thomas took delivery of his first Concept2 SkiErg two years ago and said it now played a leading role in his daily strength and endurance conditioning program. It is also used heavily by clients training in his Mount Gambier gym, Tough Fit. “I’m not aware of the SkiErg being used by other trainers in the region, but in our gym it’s the punishment of choice,” he said. “We love it because it gets results. But we hate

it too, because when you do it right it hurts like hell. “If you train your mind to become comfortable with feeling uncomfortable, then you can accomplish amazing things. That’s something I practice and preach every single day.” Social media has also opened up new possibilities for Mr Thomas, as he strives to deliver world-class training methods and ideologies to local clients. “Instagram has allowed us to connect with like-minded athletes across the globe,” he said. “We compare scores, techniques programs and ideas. We also offer advice, encouragement and congratulations when it is earned. “And our clients stack up very well. We are lifting big numbers and featuring in the world ski and row rankings. I’m very proud of their hard work.” You can follow Mr Thomas and his training on Instagram @tough_fit. Visit www.concept2.com for SkiErg event results, upcoming challenges and more information.

LOCAL Spin king to headline Coonawarra Cup celebrations Former Australian test cricketer, and now wine presenter, Stuart MacGill was announced as the new guest MC for the 2016 Coonawarra Vignerons Cup marquee, to be hosted by Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated (CGWI).

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Chocolate Christmas cookies 250g butter, softened 3/4 cup (155g) caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 2 cups (300g) plain flour 1/3 cup (35g) Dutch cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 12 small peppermint candy canes, coarsely chopped Chocolate icing 1 1/2 cups (230g) icing sugar mixture 1/4 cup (30g) Dutch cocoa powder 1/4 cup (60ml) boiling water Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 oven trays with baking paper. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter, sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl until pale and creamy. Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda and stir to combine. Roll

tablespoonsful of mixture into balls and place on the lined trays, allowing room for spreading. Use the palm of your hand to gently flatten. Bake in preheated oven, swapping trays halfway through cooking, for 15 minutes or until firm to the touch. Remove from oven and set aside on trays to cool completely. Transfer biscuits on a wire rack over an oven To make the chocolate icing, combine the icing sugar and cocoa in a medium bowl. Add the water and stir to a slightly runny paste. Spread icing over each biscuit and sprinkle with chopped candy canes. Set aside for 30 minutes to set..

In making the announcement, Tim Bailey chairperson of the CGWI Cup committee, said he was delighted that Stuart had agreed to join this year’s cup marquee event as the MC. “He’s arguably one of the greatest leg spinners of all time … and we’re really pleased he’s coming to Coonawarra next year, given his passion for wine.,” Tim said. Tim also announced that ticket prices to the Cup marquee remained the same as 2015, there would be several types of auctions occurring on the day, the Fashions on the Fields will be run in-conjunction with Thoroughbred Racing SA, and the Masters Golf Tournament would continue. “We have 12 teams already nominated for the Masters Golf Tournament which is really exciting”, said Tim. The Coonawarra Vignerons Cup launch was held earlier this month at the Penola Racecourse Club rooms, with a crowd of 30 Penola Racing Club and Coonawarra winery personnel attending. Officially launching the 2016 Coonawarra Vignerons Cup, Doug Balnaves was ever enthusiastic about the event. “It’s just a great day out, and I’ve been coming every year for I don’t know how long”, said the Coonawarra wine region patron. Doug said the Coonawarra Cup has been an annual fixture on the SA regional racing events calendar for 33 years. Doug said he, along with fellow Coonawarra stalwarts Bruce Redman, Doug Bowen, Greg Clayfield, Bill and Jim Brand,

and racing identity Leon Osborne, thought it seemed like a good idea in 1982 to start up a race day to attract interstate visitors. “Our first year was quite forgettable really. It was an uncharacteristically hot day, the sandwiches were shriveling before our eyes, and only about 20 people fronted up. But we did get better at it, although sometimes the weather has been a bit unkind to us on a couple of occasions,” said Doug. That would have been in 2011 when it rained so much that race organisers had to cancel the entire meet after race four. Now the cup usually attracts 3000 visitors from across the nation for an eight race program, with each race generally sponsored by one of the local wineries. Speaking about the race meet, local jockey Paul Marks said he’s been riding for 35 years, and really enjoys riding in the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup. “It’s been fantastic to watch it (the race meet) grow. The crowds are huge … the atmosphere is really good, and makes the jockeys really competitive and want to do well,” said Marks. And for race goers keen on partaking in a beautiful food and wine experience at the same time there are general public tickets available to the huge marquee hosted by the CGWI. “That usually attracts about 700 people now. The bubbly is flowing, there’s great food on offer, there’s a lot of interest in the auctions we run … it’s just a great fun day,” said Doug. “I just never imagined it would become as big as it has become.” Public tickets for the 2016 Coonawarra Vignerons Cup marquee are now on sale at www.coonawarra. org for $165 per person. Tickets are also available for teams of four seeking to join in the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup Golf Masters Tournament being held at the Penola Golf course the afternoon before the Cup. Team tickets are $120.

Timber road set to receive a massive makeover Works are due to begin on the region’s busiest timber road in a bid to boost productivity and improve economic efficiencies. Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said the investment of almost $2.5 million of Commonwealth funding in this road infrastructure would ensure the Glenelg region’s timber industry continued to flourish. “Currently the CondahHotspur Road has narrow seal and shoulders that fail under heavy vehicle loads, particularly during the winter months. The Crawford River Bridge is only five metres wide which does not allow for two-way passing for

B-Doubles,” Mr Tehan said.“This project will provide efficient year-round access to the Myamyn wood chip mill and onto the Port of Portland for export. The Federal Government recognises the important economic impact this timber industry is providing to the nation’s economy.” Glenelg Shire Mayor Max Oberlander said the $5.2 million Condah-Hotspur Road project would widen and strengthen 14km of road pavement, significantly improving wood-flow to the Port of Portland.

LOCAL Portland’s cruise ship season almost here Learn the latest about the pending cruise ship season next week at a public information session. Community members, including the business and tourism industry, are invited to the session on Wednesday 18 November at 6.30pm at the Portland Arts Centre. The next cruise ship, the Pacific Jewel is due to arrive in Portland on Thursday 7 January 2016. This is followed by visits by the Pacific Eden on Wednesday 13 January and Saturday 6 February 2016. Glenelg Shire Mayor Max Oberlander said the information session would provide an opportunity for the community to provide their feedback on the busy tourist season ahead. “We created a wonderful experience for our cruise visitors in 2015 and we are looking forward to making 2016 even better,” Cr Oberlander said. “The Port of Portland received an above average port rating by P&Os cruise ship passengers during the four stopovers in 2015. It’s important we continue to build on this success to ensure Portland is a destination of choice into the future. “This will take an entire community effort to achieve and it is vital we continue to work together to provide the best stopover experience for these thousands of tourists who will arrive over the coming months.” It is estimated each stopover will inject more than $1million worth of business activity to the local economy. Cr Oberlander said a Cruise Ship Working Group, featuring members of the tourism industry, council staff, and community representatives, meet fortnightly to formulate plans for the visit. Keep up to date on all of the Cruise Ship news by downloading The Bridge newsletter from www.glenelg.vic.gov. au/Cruise_Ships_to_ Portland or collect a hard copy from local Visitor Information Centres and Council Customer Information Centres.

MOUNT GAMBIER RAIL LAND OFFICIALLY UNVEILED The weather gods were kind to organisers of the official opening of Mount Gambier’s Rail Land redevelopment with huge crowds attending Sunday’s event that boasted market stalls, vintage & classic cars; musical entertainment, food stalls & plenty of fun family activities.

Bill Kuhl might be 93 years old but age has not wearied him – it might have slowed him down but that’s about it. The accomplished cricketer is a war veteran and while he is reticent to talk about himself, it is not because he doesn’t have a treasure trove of memories to share but because he doesn’t like the fuss. And that’s why when the plan was hatched to have the former South Gambier and Yahl cricketer do the toss at a 2015/16 Barber Shield contest, it became a covert operation and even as Mr Kuhl sat in the car at Frew Park waiting for play to start he had no idea that he wasn’t just there to watch his beloved brown caps but to actually do the toss (pictured above). Organised by Mark Stratford, in an ideal world it would have been a Yahl v South Gambier clash but when that wasn’t possible because of ill health, the East Gambier-Yahl clash was the next best thing. A three time winner of the association batting trophy, Kuhl was an opening batsman, who also plied his trade as a medium pacer and all this, after starting his career as a wicketkeeper – he has literally done it all. Kuhl was introduced to cricket by his uncle Jim McGregor, who was a talented cricketer in the region, and played in a high school competition before heading off to the war for three and a half years. When he returned there was a competition being established with Mount Gambier divided into four zones and he was deemed a South player and the reason he ended up a Yahl legend is a simple one – business. Kuhl took over the Yahl store and when the competition expanded and OB Flat was relinquishing its position, Yahl wanted to establish a club and the rest is history. “The boys asked if I would play for Yahl and I was there every day so it made sense,” Kuhl said. He grew up watching the likes of English great Len Hutton ply their trade and was at the Adelaide Oval to see Norm O’Neill make a century. And while Kuhl might not have worn the baggy green, he was a more than handy regional cricketer, making his Whitty Trophy debut for Mount Gambier as an 18 year old and played almost every one of those representative contests until his retirement. “I did make some good friends through that,” Kuhl said. “When you came up against them it was fair dinkum but after those games or when you were playing for Mount Gambier you were mates.” One thing’s for sure it was a simpler time. “We had batting gloves, a box and a lump of wood in our hands,” he said. And while he marvelled at the size of some of the bats at the weekend’s game, he thought the helmets and other safety aspects made total sense. “We used to play on pitches that were slate with large gaps and coconut matting and the ball used to really fly around,” he said. After watching the opening few overs of the Barber Shield clash, including the start of a fine innings from young gun Jack Gosling, Mr Kuhl headed out to the Yahl ground for an afternoon tea.
