COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT ON TRACK Construction of Portland District Health’s new Primary and Community Health Precinct is entering its next phase as work on the $460,000 project draws to an end. Access to the building will be changed over the next few weeks as the construction work is finalised. Hotel Services Manager Barb James said the new reception area would be completed this week before work starts on the treatment room. “This means we will have to block the entry people have been using,” Ms James said. “People will need to revert to using the original front entrance.” For this week both entrances will be available but from October 12 until the end of the month only the front entrance can be used. The project will integrate allied health, specialist and community consulting services and programs in a newly refurbished building. There will also be more rooms available for visiting specialists. PDH Director of Corporate Services Ros Jones said this would assist the community to more easily access the services they require through a one-stop shop approach. Ms Jones said PDH hoped to keep disruption for patients to a minimum. A new temporary undercover dropoff point has been established near the building during the construction process. Allied and community health services to be co-located will include speech therapy, diabetes education, psychology services, dietitians, drug and alcohol services and cancer support. Some of the services had been relocated from the former community health services building in Otway Street. PDH received Rural Capital Support funding of $463,636 for the project.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY A new plan for refugees.. by Robbie Tansel Like many of you I’m sure, I was affected quite deeply at the images of refugees desperately fleeing Syria into Europe recently. As a father, I was particularly emotional about the image of a young boy who had drowned whilst trying to reach safety by boat.In the past I’ve probably been a bit dubious about many of the refugees. I’ve always wondered why for instance, refugees reach Indonesia, a country where they are safe from the problems of their own country and often share a world view and faith, but then decide to get on a rickety boat to get to Australia. Excuse me if I’m sounding too much like Tony Abbott. I’ve probably reached a point where I simply think these are people just like you or me, who happen to have been born in a volatile part of the world, and someone simply needs to help them. We have the resources and ability to help so it might as well be us. I am conscious of the fact that some of you need a little more convincing still. With this in mind, I’ve come up with some other ways to help you care about the plight of migrants and refugees. With this in mind I’ve tried to appeal to the things you care about. One strategy I have is that we start allowing refugees to enter based on their sporting capabilities. We haven’t done so great in recent Olympic Games. Many of our international sporting teams and competitors are simply not up to

standard. We could improve this with more funding, better training or a greater focus on physical activity in our youth. Or we could set up talent identification camps inside of the world’s refugee camps. You’ve just spent weeks fleeing some evil regime of brutal murderers, walking hundreds of kilometres. You should be in great shape to complete a beep test. Reach a satisfactory level and we should be able to find a visa to get you to Australia. Let’s set up Australian Institute of Sports in the refugee camps of the world. f you’re not that great we’ll palm you off to New Zealand. Imagine how great this will be for the government. When we start bombing a country, not only will we be liberating the people from tyrants/oppression/weapons of mass destruction, they’ll be able to justify it as a way of lifting our medal count at future Olympics. Admittedly this isn’t a foolproof plan. Our most recent Ashes squad included Pakistani refugee Fawad Ahmed and we all know how well that went. Plan two: reality show. I’m not totally sure about a title yet. Who Wants

to Be A Refugee? The Block : Refugee camp tent version. Survivor: They Could Really Die If We Don’t Damn Well Do Something. The Biggest Gainers. We actually feed these poor people and try and make them healthy. Clearly the world is in love with reality television because it’s just about all that is on the box nowadays. For some reason a lot of you actually care about what is happening in the lives of these attention starved fame chasers. No doubt you would start caring about refugees if they were put through a series of entertaining challenges, and then each week we scored them or voted someone out of the camp. But who would we get to host? It would need to be someone who has a bit of time on their hands. They would need to have strong opinions regarding refugees. They’re probably going to need a bit of a tough streak because not all of the refugees are going to win and gain access to Australia. Tony Abbott. Exactly. Picture our former PM, sitting at his office desk Donald Trump style uttering his catchphrase, “Back on the boat!” We’d even start liking Mr Abbott. Wouldn’t we? Now before you start sending your emails to robbietansel@gmail. com refer to the name of my weekly column. It would be nice if we cared about these people just because it’s the right thing to do.

LOCAL Let’s get behind Louise She might have only been singing for just over five years but Mount Gambier’s Louise Adams, is certainly making an impact – not just with fans of the Channel 7 reality show X Factor but with music industry powerbrokers. While the Mount Gambier community has hung on her every word since her audition performance of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good, the music industry really sat up and took notice when Louise headed off to London for the home visits with her now mentor James Blunt. She sang for heavyweight Simon Cowell – a man notoriously difficult to impress – and clearly won him over. Her performance of Dolly Parton’s Jolene made such an impact on the 55-year-old that he declared Louise the winner. “I love her. You’re going to remember her – that voice,” Cowell added. Needless to say Louise progressed to the live show, where she again wowed all four judges with Jefferson Airplane’s Somebody to Love. “That was perfect – don’t change a thing,” Dannii Minogue said. And there’s not much chance she will. The 31 year old is part of what she describes as a, now top 11, that is very grounded. “Everyone is down to earth, very humble,” Louise said. “I think everyone’s trying to make the most of it (the opportunity).” Of course, no matter how

the lawyer by trade impresses the four mentors, who she really needs to keep impressing is the Australian public with the public vote making or breaking these fledgling careers. And just as Mount Gambier got behind dancer Sam Malseed for his successful run into the penultimate show of So You Think You Can Dance, Louise will be hoping her local community gets behind her X Factor journey. To vote for Louise and keep her in the running to win X Factor 2015, call 1902 555 707 or SMS Louise to 191 777.

LOCAL Following in her mother’s footsteps Students from the Margaret Cleves School of Dancing excelled in Adelaide recently, competing against dancers from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. Eight year old Lucy Edwards (pictured right) became the 24th individual champion dancer the school has produced, following in her mother Katie Bell’s footsteps, who is a former Australian Champion. Lucy won the 7-11 years section of the City of Port Adelaide Championship, with team mate Hailee Pearce coming runner up. Sarah Hanel (pictured left), in only her second championship since coming out of retirement, won the 16 Years & Over Championship in a strong section. Sarah was also runner up in the National Premiership. Ebony McDonald was runner up in the 12-13 Years

Championship and also won the 12 Years & Under National Premiership. Both Sarah and Ebony also won the Spirit of Highland Dancing Awards for their respective age groups. Tulle Perryman won the 13 Years & Over Novice Premiership and Abbey Freebairn was the winner of the 12 Years & Under Novice Premiership. Evie Edwards won two gold, one silver and one bronze in the Primary section.

LOCAL Step back in time in Portland For the first time since 2011, Melbourne-based tall ship ‘Enterprize’, an exact replica of the historic ship that brought the first white settlers to Melbourne in 1835, will dock in Portland. Sydney based HMB Endeavour will also visit Portland between 18 March and 25 March 2016, with a huge tourism boost expected for the town over the week. While the Endeavour schedule is yet to be finalised, tours for the Enterprize are already on sale. The ship will be stationed at the new marina from 22 November and will take people on tours until November 30. The fully operational replica of the Enterprize was launched in Melbourne in 1997 and was constructed as close to the original ship as possible. Plans for the project involved painstaking work by naval architects and shipwrights using information gathered from the few paintings and sketches of the original Enterprize and shipping registration details from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Robert Halliday said it was a privilege to have such a carefully constructed replica of history in our waters. “Enterprize was built to give all Victorians the opportunity to experience life on board a nineteenth century sailing ship, Cr Halliday said. “As an historic coastal Port, our community is fascinated with maritime history and this ship complements that interest perfectly.” lifestyle1.net | 22 edit - highland dancing.indd 1

OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month FEATURE Wonderland in Pink returns Last year it was a Winter Wonderland – this year, organisers are keeping the wonderland theme but moving the even from July to October, making it a Wonderland in Pink. It was a major fundraiser for the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group, and while last year, some funds were channelled the way of Breast Cancer Network Australia, this year, the focus will be almost predominantly local. Wonderland in Pink will be held on October 31 from 6.30pm at the Attamurra Golf Club. The $82 a head, three course meal will be catered by St Bees, and there will be live entertainment from Terry Sutherland and Jools. The 2015 guest speaker will be Corrine Bryan, a locally based breast cancer survivor. The auction also returns with a number of impressive items already on the agenda, including an accommodation package for a Robe bed & breakfast and weekend access

The funds raised from the fantastic night out are used for the Helping Hand bags provided by the Breast cancer Awareness Group for local women going through breast cancer. Tickets are available from Active8 Sports & Health Centre or by emailing eventsinpink@gmail.com and numbers are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Last year the event raised more than $12,000 and organisers are hopeful they can top that at this year’s October 31 Wonderland in Pink.

OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month FEATURE Pink bales highlight rural women’s health Australian packaging company Tapex is again releasing a limited run of pink and black netwrap to raise awareness of breast cancer in rural communities. This silage season Jonny and Belinda Lamond from Beljon Pastoral Co in Mount Gambier are turning the countryside pink with pink netwrap in support of the McGrath Foundation. Belinda said they are excited to be supporting the good cause and to help raise awareness of such a pressing issue such as rural women’s health in Australia, and, in particular, breast cancer awareness. Beljon Pastoral Co sees this as a great way to help put money back into a very good cause by purchasing the Tama Pink Netwrap and painting the country side pink. “As we have had family and close friends go through Breast Cancer, supporting the campaign was a decision we did not have to think twice about,” said Belinda. Beljon Pastoral Co currently

runs a small team to help with the contracting in the hay and silage season and on an average year they bale 10,000 round bales. Beljon Pastoral Co has purchased their crop packaging requirements through Wes Flier at Mount Gambier Rural Supplies at 201 Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier. Israeli company Tama, the world leader in netwrap innovation, supply Tapex pink and black striped ‘Edge to Edge’ netwrap in 4500m-long rolls. Tama 4500m Edge to Edge netwrap is the lightest, longest and strongest netwrap on the market. Along with providing a visual reminder that women should be aware of breast cancer prevention, Tapex will donate $18 from the sale of each roll of pink and black netwrap to the McGrath Foundation. The McGrath Foundation raises money to fund McGrath breast care nurses in communities right across Australia and to increase breast awareness in young Australians, particularly young women. OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month FEATURE Supporting the women of Naracoorte The Naracoorte Breast Cancer Support Group has been running since 2000. The group consists of breast cancer survivors and its main purpose is to support local women in Naracoorte and surrounding areas who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The group does this by providing a small amount of financial support after initial diagnosis and social support and information via a group meeting for coffee once a month at Settlers Cafe and talk/meeting every two months at 6pm in the Breakfast Room at the Naracoorte Hotel. OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month FEATURE Australia’s breast care nursing shortage set to grow Australia has a critical gap in breast care nursing services which is set to widen by 38 per cent in the next five years, the McGrath Foundation announced last month. • Australia currently has a shortfall of 79 breast care nurses nationally • By 2020, 47 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day • There will be a shortage of 109 breast care nurses by 2020 – a 38 per cent increase on today’s shortfall Research by Australian Health & Hospital Association (AHHA) and the McGrath Foundation has found increasing breast cancer incidence, a surge of people living with breast cancer, an ageing population and increased patient contacts means the demand for breast care nurses is far outstripping supply. The 10 month study, compiled in the McGrath Foundation’s report Keeping Abreast of Future Need: the Growing Demand for Breast Care Nurses, and released to coincide with the Foundation’s 10th Anniversary, found while there is a shortage of 79 breast care nurses required today, this is projected to grow to a shortage of 109 by 2020. John Boyages, Professor of Breast Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University said, “Although breast cancer mortality rates are decreasing, more people are being diagnosed and living longer with the disease. “Not only do breast care nurses support the patient and their families, they also reduce the burden on the health system by limiting unnecessary admissions to emergency departments and supporting oncologists

and surgeons in their treatment of patients.” It has been predicted that by 2017 there will be 209,200 women living with a previous breast cancer diagnosis, many of whom will require treatment or posttreatment monitoring and related care – provided by breast care nurses.1 Although overall there is a gap across the nation, the research also highlights key hotspots where breast care nursing services are required. Western Sydney, Nepean Blue Mountains, Northern Adelaide, Eastern Melbourne, South Eastern Melbourne, Northern Sydney and Far North Queensland have been identified as areas of greatest need. “For the past decade the McGrath Foundation has placed breast care nurses in communities across Australia,” McGrath Foundation CEO Petra Buchanan said. “While we are immensely proud of what we have achieved our tenth anniversary provides the opportunity to highlight the future nursing need. Our report Keeping Abreast of Future Need: the Growing Demand for Breast Care Nurses goes beyond compiling the incidence and mortality, it examines the way that breast care nurses deliver care which allows us to better understand the gaps related to the breast cancer workforce and plan for future services. However, this shortage burden is too large for us to carry alone. We must continue to work collaboratively with health services and the government to ensure Australian patients facing breast cancer have access to the best specialised care.” The McGrath Foundation currently has 105 McGrath Breast Cancer Nurses across Australia representing 38 per cent of the national breast care nursing community. Funding these nurses costs $13.3 million per year. “We are focused on creating new breast care nurse positions and supporting more families through increased fundraising, but we will need the support of government, corporations, businesses, and individual donors to make this possible,” Ms Buchanan said. People looking to donate can visit www. mcgrathfoundation. com.au

OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month FEATURE Time honoured fundraiser with a big plan in mind It started as a luncheon more than two decades ago and for the past three years has been a cocktail party – it is the annual fundraiser for the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group. While the function has moved with the times to allow more women who work attend the popular fundraiser, much of the event has stayed the same. It is still hosted by the Commodore on the Park, as it has been since its inception, and it is all about raising awareness of breast cancer and funds for local projects that support local breast cancer patients. For the past few years, the focus of the fundraising has been the Helping Handbags – a collection of vouchers for goods and service just to make life easier for local breast cancer patients. From fuel vouchers to massage offers, the Helping Handbags are about the practical help required as well as some much needed pampering. The 2015 Pink Party is on Friday, October 16, from 7pm, at the Commodore on the Park with a fashion parade, raffles, lucky door prizes and entertainment all on the agenda. Redgum Country is taking to the catwalk for the fashion parade, DJ Dave is providing the entertainment and a wide array of local businesses have donated goods and service

for the raffles and lucky door prizes. The 2015 event is sponsored by Commodore on the Park, Redgum Country, Joys Flowers/ Dzina Stem, DiGiorgio Wines and Exchange Printers. The Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group is not just focussed on the Helping Handbags, though, with the desperate need for a lymphedema machines also on the agenda and the fundraising efforts have that goal closer than ever. Naracoorte has one of the critical machines and the Mount Gambier group has been working overtime to get the machine for Mount Gambier based patients. It has been a priority project for the past two years and the group is confident, the 2015 fundraising and more hard work with the necessary project partners will achieve their goal.

FEATURE Australia’s breast care nursing shortage set to grow Curve Lurve is a national breast health awareness initiative. Designed specifically for young women, its goal is to communicate the importance of breast awareness, and empower young women to care for their bodies and embrace their curves. Developed by the McGrath Foundation, Curve Lurve was inspired by Jane McGrath herself, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer at just 31. At the time, Jane felt that there was a lack of information available that was relevant to young women. So, she became a passionate believer in the need for greater breast awareness for all women regardless of age. Curve Lurve encourages women to be comfortable with their breasts right from the start, and to make caring for them a priority. We want all women to ‘lurve their curves’ for the rest of their lives - and enjoy better health and wellbeing as a result. Breast awareness means getting to know your breasts so you know what’s normal for you and actively taking care of your pair. Once you’re familiar with how your breasts look and feel, you’ll be able to pick up any changes, and generally feel more confident that your pair is in perfect shape. To be breast aware, follow this simple process and remember to repeat each month: • Look - at the shape and appearance of your breasts and nipples in the mirror with your hands by your sides. Raise your arms above your head and have another look.

• Lurve - your pair. Feel all of your breasts and nipples looking for anything that isn’t normal for you. Feel from your collarbone to below the braline and under your armpit too. • Learn - what is normal for you! Breasts come in all different shapes and sizes, so get to know your normal. See your Doctor if you notice any changes. There is a number of programs on offer via the website www.curvelurve.com.au running through all the info you’ll need about breast awareness, breast cancer, risk factors and more. Although most of the content is geared towards women, there is important info included for men, so it’s all suitable for guys and girls. There is also an Curve Lurve app.

If planning a garden wedding speak to the friendly garden centre staff about seasonal plants and advice on preparing the garden for events such as a wedding or it may be an engagement party or other special functions. Timing is important and if you have 12 months before the wedding it’s a good idea to make note of what is flowering and looking good at the time in order to

plant in readiness for the best display for the big day. McCourts Garden Centre hires out topiaries and selected plants for weddings, as well as pots and pedestals and a large archway. Potted colour can be pre-ordered for instant gardens if gaps need to be filled in garden beds and pots and can be a life saver if prevailing conditions have not been perfect leading up to the big date. McCourts Garden Centre also offers a gift registry service and is well known for their beautiful giftware and gift vouchers which are very popular as wedding gifts. As a destination for wedding clients McCourts Garden Centre has built up some quality contacts such as celebrant Katrina Corman, photographer Louise Agnew, music DJs Shove n Stuff, caterers Gather Food and Wine, and wedding cakes Sally Bateman. Make an appointment to see Margie so that you can discuss your wedding ideas and watch your dreams become reality. With your ideas and her experience the perfect bouquet will be created. Margie has up to date trends at her fingertips and keeps herself informed of the latest fashions. Greenery decorations at wedding receptions are hugely popular and if you are looking

for artificial plants, trees and flowers these can also be organised for sale or hire from McCourts Garden Centre. The ideas are limitless and you can be sure the staff at McCourts Garden Centre will come up with some great ideas to make your day perfect. We want our brides to be relaxed and their experience to be stress free so why not discuss your wedding plans over a delicious coffee and cake at the Courtyard Espresso + Kitchen. Margie has wedding bookings as far ahead as 2017 so be sure and make the call as soon as possible. As a special offer when more than $500 is spent on wedding flowers, Margie will make a special throw away posy for free. Floral arrangements can also be organized

for other functions from anniversaries, engagements, christmas table centre pieces, bouquets for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, sympathy and of course for new arrivals. Whether it’s for 300 or 30, whether it rivals the royal wedding or whether it’s a backyard barbeque, whether you just decided to make it official one morning over breakfast or whether it was the grandest, most romantic proposal of all time, the planning still needs to meticulous. Paying attention to details in the lead up makes for a relaxing day when your wedding day finally arrives and if you have a clear picture in your mind as to what you want try and share the load with close, trusted friends and family so that you’re not too exhausted to enjoy the day when it rolls around. Be sure about

how long you’ll need to save and plan, any special events you’d like to avoid and a realistic time to be away from work and able to take time off in the lead up and aftermath for a honeymoon…

what costs are involved and the most important advice is keep a paperwork trail – it can eliminate confusion about what’s been promised and just how much it’s going to cost. After you’ve said “yes”… • If the proposal came with a ring then make sure it’s insured… • If you’re picking out the ring together after set the ground rules early on budget and do your research… •Decide if you’re going to have an engagement party and set a date. • Planning an engagement party is a nice rehearsal for your event management skills…

• ASAP you need to sit down together and work out an acceptable and REALISTIC budget – this might mean putting in place a savings schedule to make sure you easily cover the anticipated costs as well as hopefully having some money set aside for those unexpected costs that could crop up as the wedding draws closer… • You also need to establish just who is paying for what and what financial involvement the parents were considering so you know exactly

where every cent is coming from... • Get the money chat out of the way early – it can be awkward but you don’t want to be haggling in the lead up to the big day… Map out the big picture and start locking in the crucial elements for the day… • Decide on just what kind of wedding and reception you want and how many guests you want to include… • Locking in a reception venue as early as possible is critical. Try and organise a face to face consultation with a selection of different venues and caterers and ask plenty of questions so you know exactly what

Set a date – factor in what time of the year you’d like to be married,

they’re offering as exactly what it’s going to cost. • Decide on a civil or religious ceremony and a venue for the ceremony and book… • Start getting paperwork together for all the legal requirements of marriage and check with your celebrant or priest just what you need to provide… • Select your wedding party TOGETHER and then approach them about being involved… • You’ll need to start deciding on dresses and suits and by association a colour scheme for the big day – while the guys will probably be easy fixed, you need to be realistic about settling on a colour and style of dress for your bridesmaids, giving you plenty of time for fittings and choice of accessories…This is even more critical if all your bridal party is not located where you live during the planning stages. • If you have a preferred hair stylist and make-up artist for your wedding day then check out their availability as soon as possible and at least temporarily book their services… • Start investigating photographers and/or videographers and lock your preferred option in… cont. page 32

PLANNING YOUR SPECIAL DAY FEATURE What happens after you’ve agreed to officially tie the knot… FROM PAGE 30 • If you have a lot of guests coming from away or are planning a destination wedding, you’ll need to organise Save The Date notification and even check out potential special deals for guests at a particular accommodation facility… • Start contemplating honeymoon destinations, factoring in budget, time you’ll be able to get off work and a location you’ll both enjoy given the time of the year you’ll be travelling. Once again research is the key to getting the best deal… • You don’t have to rush out and buy every bridal magazine on the shelves but keep your eye out for different ideas and keep an ideas folder…

Six months and counting… With most of the big picture elements to the wedding already locked in it’s time to start sweating the finer details of the day… • Book a florist – once again some face to face consultations with a selection of florists and looking at examples of their previous work should help with the final decision…. • Confirm your hair stylist and make up artist and book in any pre-wedding appointments like a tan, facial or manicure as well…You also might like to check if guests from away or close friends would like to use the same stylists and make sure they’re catered for as well… In a way it’s probably the biggest (and most discussed) decision the bride makes and you have to make it NOW – the dress. Whether you’re ordering it, getting it handmade or lucky enough to find one off the rack that fits, you need to tick this job off the to-do list NOW • Plan a girls weekend when you can try on dresses and shoes and get those outfits locked in as well… •Reconfirm ALL your reception details… Select and approach an MC for the reception… • Time to book in the cars or make

whatever transport arrangements you’re going to need.. • Decide on any entertainment for the reception and book it in… • If you’ve decided to have a gift registry you’ll need to select a location/s and start compiling a wishlist… • Book your honeymoon and make sure you organise any visas or passports that might

be needed… • Confirm your photographer/videographer booking details… Tick, tock, tick tock – three months to go • Plan your vows… • If you have to or want to have pre-wedding counselling then now is the time… • If you’ve planned an outdoor ceremony then make sure you have an alternate venue in the case of poor weather… • Lock in the bridesmaids dresses, including shoes and accessories… • Lock in the boys’ suits, including shoes, shirts and ties… • Make sure your mother’s on track with her outfit and your dad’s not just dusting off a suit from the 90s… • Order the rings.. • Order cake…. • Finalist the guest list and send out the invitations (and any relevant gift registry information)… • If you’re putting together any reception decoration, placecards or bomboniere yourself it’s time to start those projects… CONT. PLANNING YOUR SPECIAL DAY FEATURE What happens after you’ve agreed to officially tie the knot…

FROM PAGE 32 • Book wedding night accommodation and decide if you’re going to have any day after functions with family and/or friends, especially if people have travelled a long way and you’re not leaving on your honeymoon immediately… Don’t turn Bridezilla but there is only six weeks to go… • Lock in all the “extras” for your weddings – people doing readings, ushers, musician.. • File your Notice of Intended Marriage (needs to be done one month and one day before your wedding)… • Confirm all details with reception venue

including guest numbers, menu, beverages and seating plan, if required… • Final fittings – that means EVERYONE… • Get your engagement ring cleaned so it’s looking its best on the big day… • Confirm all details with florist... • Confirm all details with photographer and/ or videographer… • Hair and make-up trials… • Make sure your home insurance will cover the arrival of the gifts… • Make sure you have everything that you need to provide for reception like placecards, centerpieces… The final countdown – last week of your single life

• Wedding rehearsal… • Confirm order of service and print booklets if required... • Pick up rings… • Finalise wedding party gifts… • Confirm florist and cake delivery details… • Re-confirm any entertainment… • Pack for wedding night and honeymoon… The bottom line is enjoy not only the day but everything in the lead up to it. It won’t be stress-free – nothing important ever is. Stick to your budget and your to-do list and planning the day can still be relatively relaxing. Allow others (that you trust) to help – you don’t have to be a one man event coordination machine.

Something to watch • Roman Holiday (1953)

Audrey Hepburn became a star with this film, in which she played Princess Anne, weary of protocol and anxious to have some fun before she is mummified by “affairs of state.” On a diplomatic visit to Rome, Anne escapes her royal retainers and scampers incognito through the Eternal City. She happens to meet American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who, recognizing a hot news story, pretends that he doesn’t recognize her and offers to give her a guided tour of Rome. Naturally, Joe hopes to get an exclusive interview, while his photographer pal Irving (Eddie Albert) attempts to sneak a photo. And just as naturally, Joe falls in love with her. Filmed on location in Rome, Roman Holiday garnered an Academy Award for the 24-year-old Hepburn; another Oscar went to the screenplay.

A single woman who has served as a bridesmaid 27 times wrestles with the prospect of supporting her sister at the altar on number 28, despite having fallen helplessly in love with her sibling’s handsome husband-to-be. Jane (Katherine Heigl) has the kind of altruistic traits that everyone looks for in a friend, yet lately the perennial bridesmaid has begun to feel as if something is missing in her life. Now, as Jane finally comes to terms with her true feelings, her life begins to change in ways she never expected.

PLANNING YOUR SPECIAL DAY FEATURE Don’t let your wedding send you broke... When you want everything to be perfect it can be easy to get carried away and sometimes put thoughts of that all important budget right out of your mind. But you don’t want your fabulous day to see you in debt or cause you undue financial stress. No one’s expecting you to scrimp on one of the most important days of your life but just suggesting you’re a little practical. These seven budget saving tips are just some of many great ideas that can rein in the spending so your bank manager enjoys the day as much as you do. iTunes can be your best friend at a reception. Download all your favourite tunes and a whole lot of guaranteed party starters and save money on a DJ or live band for

your entertainment. It also means you can handpick the music for your reception. Even better, ask a music savvy friend to help and it can be one less thing you have to worry about in the lead-up to the big day. Corsages are something many of us associate with American high school proms but they can be a gorgeous, practical option to having all your attendants having bouquets. Corsages are back in vogue and can look simple and elegant and also free up your bridesmaids’ hands for all those important primping tasks you need them to help you with to make sure you look and feel your best all day. Don’t get carried away when selecting your bridal party – the bigger the number of attendants the more the costs escalate with outfits, gifts, transport and the like. It’s

a tough choice but sometimes the bridal party numbers can spiral out of control. Find other special jobs like readings and usher duties for close friends. In the end, let’s face it, being a guest, with no responsibility, other than to have fun, is the best gig at a wedding anyway. Sharing your day is a privilege – whatever the role. If funds are tight then opt for an intimate affair and don’t get sucked into extending invitations to partners of work colleagues who you’ve never even met. You shouldn’t have to be introduced to people at your own wedding – they should be your most treasured friends and family members. It is your day and if having the reception you’ve always dreamed of means cutting back on numbers then so be it. Serve your wedding cake as dessert – it

saves on cake boxes and quite frankly it’s preferable to guests trying to store the cake in their handbag. By the time dessert rolls around at a reception, many people have moved away from their table or are already enjoying the dance floor. A slither of cake is all they need to top off the meal. If you cut your cake early in the reception it also allows plenty of time for the venue to cut and plate up the cake. It’s not a hard and fast rule but a cocktail style reception is often a cheaper alternative to the lavish sit down reception option. More and more people are opting for finger food functions and if you make sure you select a diverse and generous menu, it can be a cheaper alternative. A steady stream of food all night can be just as satisfying as a large meal of something you might not really like. It allows for better socializing but always make sure there are some chairs and tables for elderly guests and just so people can give their feet a break. A wedding planner might sound like a luxury but investigate the option – sometimes their contacts and connection with suppliers actually sees the bill considerably cheaper. Good wedding planners have a reliable band of contacts that they often get good deals from because they send so much business their way. It’s an option worth investigating and if you also factor in the reduced stress and workload for you, the cost may well be worth it.

PLANNING YOUR SPECIAL DAY YOU’RE INVITED... There is a vast array of stationery on offer for your wedding day with obviously the invitation not only the most important but also arguably the only essential piece of correspondence – the rest is more negotiable depending on your wedding style, ceremony requirements and personal taste. The invitation is another facet of your wedding that can be as formal or innovative as you like with most couples opting to use the invitation as a sneak peak of what is to come on the big day – it usually sticks closely to the theme of the wedding – modern, classical, traditional, country style etc. There are many ways to create gorgeous signature stationery that says it all and these are the trends taking weddings by storm at the moment.. Colour It’s all about bold colours with weddings at the moment with a tendency to style up the stationery with metallics and sparkles to add a touch of glamour. Tone your colours to complement your overall wedding themes, but don’t worry about exact matches. Orange is an on trend wedding colour right now. It’s vibrant, fun, fresh, warm and beautiful and perfect for all seasons. Pair orange with purple, spring green, lime green, burgundy, aqua, turquoise, white, sky blue, chocolate brown, gold, silver, pewter, lilac, watermelon or fuchsia/hot pink. Brown (also known as chocolate, mocha, latte, cocoa and coffee bean) is the new black. Hot combos are brown and pink, brown and blue, brown and green (chartreuse being a wildly popular shade of green at the moment) and brown and champagne wedding invitations. Classic black and white invitations, of course, never go out of style and if it’s simple and elegant you’re after, it’s still the safest, most stylish option.. Motifs and Graphic Themes Who says your invitation has to be just a bunch of words? Many couples incorporate a graphic motif to match the season, such as a flower for a spring wedding, a shell for a summer wedding or a skeleton leaf for an autumn wedding. Graphics can lend sentiment and character that your invitation would otherwise be missing. For example, if your fiancé proposed on holidays in Bali – use a tropical motif. Crystals & Embellishments An increasing number of brides are adding glamour and pizzazz to their invitations by incorporating embellishments such as Swarovski crystals or rhinestone buckles,

FEATURE Here comes the paperwork... If you change your surname get ready for the paperwork - you’ll need to change your name officially on a number of critical documents. • Driver’s licence & vehicle registration • Electoral roll & pwassport • Bank records – account names, credit card • Any property titles • Your employer’s records • Your will • Medical records • Membership cards for places like the gym, • Insurance policies and other financial video shop, frequent flyer clubs and other records like superannuation accounts and store cards health insurance.

jewelled braids, silk tassles and sashes. Be aware that when you add three dimensional embellishments, you will need gift boxes to house your invitations. Some crystals, depending on size and quantity, can still be sent by snail mail, but you do risk breakage unless the invite is carefully wrapped. Monograms & Logos A cute trend is for couples to create their own wedding logo. Why not create a stylized version of your initials or wedding date, to be used throughout your wedding stationery? You could also use it on your aisle runner, cake, bar, and even projected onto your dance floor. lifestyle1.net | 39 edit - bridal feature.indd 9
