July 2015

a progressive and caring council

Community Update Mayor’s column I was recently very fortunate to be included in a delegation that embarked on a trade mission to Shandong Province in China. The mission, led by the SA Premier in conjunction with the Shandong Government, involved up to 200 delegates from South Australian Councils and Government Officials along with businesses, with a focus on economic development collaboration between Shandong and South Australian local governments. I hope that the relationships forged on this trip will start to have some positive valuable outcomes with many potential opportunities for our community into the future – my full report on this trip is now available on our website.

Mayor on trade mission to Shandong Province in China

Local Dairy Investment Conference I attended the South East Dairy Investment Forum in June. The conference, organised by Dairy SA and PIRSA was well attended from across all sections of the Dairy Industry. The theme was to be Investor-Ready with much of the discussion centred around how the industry had faired over the last year or two, and what resilience the farmers and the industry had. Future Chinese investment in dairying, depending on how it’s done, could be good for the region and the long term vision for the industry. Co-investing and retention of family owned farming enterprises was also discussed.

Super Trawler – “Geelong Star” You may have heard about a super trawler which has been given permission to fish in SA Federal Waters from the 3 nautical mile limit out to 200 miles. The “Geelong Star” is the Swedish vessel that the Federal Government has allowed to fish in our waters. This super trawler is a floating factory and has freezers that are capable of holding over 1,000 ton. The ship is supervised by two AFMA officers from the Federal Department of Fisheries who note the bi-catch and marine environmental issues like the killing of dolphins, seals, sea birds, etc. I have phoned the Department to complain about the operation of the vessel in close proximity to our Port and our fishing grounds, citing the potential to upset the ecology of our marine species and the impact it would have on our local fishing industries and amateur fishing. The Department couldn’t tell me details such as what they had caught on their last trip, how close they planned to come to the Grant Council coastline, etc. as this information is commercial in confidence. The catch method is completely different to the SA Bait Fishermen who can release any unwanted mammals alive – catch and release. Several years ago another super trawler was also to be given permission to fish our coasts and through people power the then Government refused their permit. The Geelong Star’s permit allows them to work outside best practice provisions and they aren’t required to abide by any state rules that are imposed on our fishermen. Other states have control over the fishing in the Federal waters out to the 200 mile limit – it’s time SA Government had the same rights so they can also refuse entry for fishing under these circumstances. This issue is one that community and council should take up with the Minister for Fisheries.

Palliative Care Funding Withdrawn Many of you would also be aware of the valuable work our speciallyskilled palliative care workers

district council of grant - DP.indd 1

undertake each day for many of our families dealing with terminally ill patients. We have joined the City Council of Mount Gambier to have the Health Minister, Jack Snelling, return funding to this vital service provided under the guidance of Country Health. This is another issue where both the State and Federal Government blame the budget cuts on one another – it’s time for our politicians to work together to find solutions and fund these vital services. I’m aware that the State Labour Minister is looking at ways to reduce the impact of these cuts on the palliative care service, but in reality this end of life care is paramount to those families facing this terrible time. Support your Councils – write to State and Federal Governments to have the funding reinstated to preserve and enhance this service.

New Infrastructure Projects Our brand new boat ramp facility has been completed and is looking first class! A big thanks must go out to everyone involved for an incredible job. We look forward to hosting the Premier and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure on 9 October to formally open the facility. Another noteworthy project which has been completed recently is the construction of a brand new boardwalk at Brown Bay. This project was completed entirely by volunteers of the South East Christian Surfers Association and really is very impressive infrastructure! What a

Emergency Services Reform Minister Koutsantonis has been driving the reform of the CFS, MFS and SES agenda saying we need to reduce duplication and drive down costs, but at the same time increasing landholders costs for the Emergency Services Levy by making landholders responsible for 90% of the costs and reducing the Government’s budget line. The Services believe there may be some things that could change to save money but the process needs to be all-inclusive, open and transparent. This is another issue that hasn’t gone away – the general public need to be fully aware that without the Emergency Services doing what they do, lives and property will be put at risk. The time has come to be honest and not just rhetoric, for the sake of our volunteers, the services they provide and the life and property they protect.

Co-Investment and Private Funds – Forestry Industry The $27m investment into the timber industry since the forward sale of harvesting rights has meant coinvestment by the industry of over $79m. This has injected life back into the industry and has meant local contractors have been kept busy building and installing the latest technology. I know the mill at Tarpeena owned by Timber Link has benefited by this co-investment arrangement and has spent in excess of $28m on equipment and technology upgrades. The forward sale wasn’t popular, but as we can see the welcome injection of funds into the industry has ensured viability and value adding is occurring in the South East, so the industry is enhanced and retained into the future.

Board Walk at Brown Bay wonderful asset for our community, especially in the summer months and I’m sure many of us will appreciate the benefits of all the hard work.

Adult Education Funding to Affect Future Courses With the demise of the Skills for All program and the budget blowout and overruns we now see budget cuts State and Federally starting to affect course provision plus content and profitability. Courses will now be to some extent employment outcome and driven by industry. Social inclusion and courses for enjoyment will be things of the past. As we see Private RTO’s and TAFE Institutions now fighting not only to service but also be able to meet the changing criteria and shortage of job markets, as well as training needs under these circumstances added to securing funding streams, crisis management tends to rule. The ability for school leavers to go to TAFE to train for a year to give them the opportunity to decide on what they would like to do in the workforce will be limited to the amount of money the individual or their family has to fund their education, or they could build up a HECS debt similar to University courses. This is another situation where mistakes were made in the way Skills for All was allowed to run. Education of our future tradespeople will rely on what we do today. Staff cuts and closing of TAFE Institutes cannot be allowed to continue. Private RTO’s have been around for a long time but ballooned with the introduction of Skills for All. A balance needs to be brought into the equation – contact your Minister to impress on them the need to

address the mistakes and fix it for our next generation.

Coastal Protection Works at Pelican Point Council continues to try to assist landholders that have erected protection works in front of their properties along the coast at Pelican Point. Public meetings have been held to inform those residents that could be affected and to work towards a solution – starting with the first stage of the process in getting design work undertaken. Council has tried to broker a solution to get the matter out of the ERD Court, where a number of residents find themselves after erecting illegal walls. Sea surges during rough weather is impacting not only on these residences but private and Crown land along the coast. The future incursion of sea water on private property will see other landholders trying to protect their properties. Council will continue to try to assist these landowners, which may assist other landholders into the future.

Councillor and Staff Tours Later in the Year We are now working towards reviewing Council’s Strategic Directions for 2015-2019. As a result, Councillors and senior Council staff will be touring various areas within the district in the second half of this year. These will replace the “Township Meetings” that have been held in previous years and are designed to give Councillors and staff the opportunity to not only meet with you, our community, but also to visit and experience the communities that will be affected by the directions and the decision we make into the future. I encourage as many members of our community as possible to get involved in these visits and hope to see many of you on our travels. It’s hard to believe we are halfway through another year already! We’ve been working through many projects here at Council that continue to keep us all very busy. I look forward to continuing my work and tackling the challenges of the second half of 2015 on Council and also on each of the external bodies of which I represent our community.

Waste Management Services Review Council has recently undertaken a review of all waste management services within the district to ensure a high level of service and value for money is achieved for ratepayers. The new waste management arrangements include: • Expanded collection area surrounding Mount Gambier • Council ownership of mobile garbage bins • Partnership with Veolia Environmental Services for the collection of mobile garbage bins Council engaged the services of Orana to assemble the new mobile garbage bins, which have been delivered and are now in use. Properties within the designated collection areas will continue to receive an alternate fortnightly

collection service for general waste and recyclables. Macs Trashpak will supervise Council’s five Waste Transfer Stations at Tarpeena, Port MacDonnell, Carpenter Rocks, Nene Valley and Donovans, as well as the provision and emptying of mini-skips and roll-on/off bins at those sites. Council acknowledges there may be some teething problems initially, but are confident that these will be minimal and beneficial for all in the long run.

Council has undertaken significant capital works over the past few years including major works at Port MacDonnell Marine Facilities, Mount Gambier Airport, and Mount Gambier & Districts Saleyards. Our 2015-16 budget approach should be seen as a consolidating and financially responsible approach to ensure sustainable financial management into the future. The budgeted operating deficit is a one-year snapshot of Council’s progress towards financial sustainability, recognising its long-term objectives of maintaining services to the community through its $200M of infrastructure including roads, sewerage, parks and buildings. Whilst this issue remains a

CEO’s column On 15 June 2015, Council adopted the 2015-16 budget. The final budget and annual business plan can be found on our website at www.dcgrant.sa.gov. au/page.aspx?c=13009&admin=1. In setting the budget for the next financial year, Council was conscious of the impact of the current financial climate on the general public as well as the need to maintain services to the community. On average, rates will go up by 5.0% which will result in the average ratepayer paying an extra $1.28 per week. The average residential rate increase is 4.5%.

Caroline, and Donovans, the finish will be in Port MacDonnell around 2.30pm. SBS will film the event and it is hoped that the public support the riders. Competitors will race in Mount Gambier on 12 August before travelling to Victoria. concern, Council’s long-term financial plan was aimed at achieving a sustainable position by 2020 and the current budget was actually ahead of previous long term projections. $1.5 million has been allocated for new assets including $424,000 for the completion of the sealing of Myers Road which will finalise a sealed coastal road network from the Victorian Border to the Coorong, with 50% coming from grant funding. $324,000 has been allocated for kerbing and channelling town streets and $358,000 for upgrades to Community Wastewater Management Systems. Other major new initiatives proposed include the implementation of the Port MacDonnell and River and Coastal Masterplans, with $20,000 allocated to each plan to commence implementation.

The Budget will also see all existing services and service standards maintained including all regulatory, economic, development and community services. Council continues to assess our future directions, operating practices, and opportunities to improve our financial performance without compromising services or increasing rates beyond what the community will accept. As reported in my last update, the Department of Planning, Transport and Industry is in the process of undertaking the restoration of the Port MacDonnell Jetty. I am very pleased to report that this project is now well and truly underway and restoration works have begun with an expected completion date of September 2015. Council will retain the timber from the existing jetty decking and will utilise these materials in community projects at Port MacDonnell and Carpenter Rocks as planned. As part of our Masterplanning process for Port MacDonnell, works were undertaken at the Village Green.

The Council’s net financial liabilities, being the most comprehensive measure of indebtedness, is expected to decrease by $1.4M in 2015-16 to approximately $4.3M at 30 June 2016 – this is equivalent to a $3,700 mortgage on a $500,000 house.

Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers • Various cellar doors throughout the Coonawarra/Penola. • July 1 – 30 Cellar Dwellers is all about hidden secrets and rare treasures – it’s the only time of the year the cellar doors dust off their museum wines, back vintages and special release wines to truly indulge the palate. It was a concept more than a decade ago when the vignerons were looking for a hook to increase visitation during the quieter winter months and it’s a concept that has thrived – attracting, particularly, the genuine wine appreciators, to sample some of the region’s best and rarest drops. ROAD FUNDING BOOST FOR SOUTHERN GRAMPIANS Roads in the Southern Grampians Shire are set to benefit from a boost in the Federal Governments Roads to Recovery funding. The Federal Government announced this week that it has topped up Roads to Recovery (R2R) funding in the 15/16 and 16/17 financial years through distribution of $23 billion revenue raised through the fuel excise tax. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Peter Dark said this is a terrific announcement for the shire. “We are really pleased with this funding announcement. council is reliant on external funding to reduce the gap in funding between what we can afford and what is needed and so anything extra we receive is a welcome bonus,” Mayor Dark said. “Without this federal funding, council cannot afford to renew all of its roads when they are due for renewal, let alone fund upgrades to roads to meet current standards and meet changing demands on the network as the freight task in the region increases. This announcement means that our total Roads to Recovery funding for the current funding cycle has increased from 8.5 million to $13 million. It’s an extra $1.2 million this financial year and an extra $3.3 million in 2016/17 which allows us to achieve so much more than we had originally planned for with our local roads infrastructure.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Boycott... by Robbie Tansel I’ve reached that age when I’m often outraged about something. Several times a week I have to fight the urge to write an angry letter to someone or other to

Call us n to a rra now g a FREE e hea ring test

voice my disgust. I’m not sure when I started caring about things but it’s really quite time consuming now. Normally I avoid writing a letter to someone because luckily for me I have a page in Lifestyle1 each week where I can say whatever I want and unload all of my burdens. With that in mind, I thought I should let you all know that I’m boycotting Lorna Jane. If I need any tight fitting pants or tops, I won’t be purchasing them at Lorna Jane. I’m not sure where I will meet that need if it arises but it definitely will not be at Lorna Jane. There, I’ve said it. To be honest I think they’ve been discriminating for years. he number of times I’ve been down there looking for new exercise outfits and I can’t find anything that suits me at all. They’re clearly not catering to people like me very well. For those who’ve missed this story in the news because you don’t follow what’s happening with Lorna Jane as closely as me, there has been controversy due to Lorna Jane only wanting to hire staff who are lean and trim. I hate this sort of discrimination because I think I often receive the same sort of treatment. For instance, I think I have been particularly harshly treated by the AFL. I can only conclude that my absence from an AFL roster is based on discrimination. I’m sure that Gillon McLachlan (if that’s his real name) the CEO of the

Your Hearing Centre

AFL would suggest that I haven’t been drafted due to a lack of fitness and talent. Well that’s pretty clearly discrimination Gill (if that’s really your name). I think I deserve an equal opportunity to play in the AFL. I don’t think that’s the reason I’m not in the AFL anyway. I think that would just be their excuse. I think it would be because I wouldn’t want to do all the necessary drugs and supplements. I don’t do the illicit or the performance enhancing drugs (pretty obvious from how poor my performance is). I believe that is an expectation of the players these days. Going back to my boycott I’m thinking of boycotting some other businesses too. The Metro Café is one business at the top of my list. They only let people work there if they wear predominantly black outfits. What about people like me who enjoy wearing a bit of navy blue, or even a splash of colour every now and then? That’s discrimination! All right, I’m probably not going to do that because the food is just too damn good. I especially won’t do it if they send me a voucher in appreciation of my cheap product placement/promo in the previous paragraph. A little bit of advice to anyone who decides to go for a job interview there though: wear black. Some piercings and ink work wouldn’t hurt either. I also feel like I’m being discriminated against by the health system. I think I’d be a great doctor. But apparently, just because I don’t have any educational qualifications, I can’t practice medicine. How is that fair? ADVERTORIAL Time to get planting We have probably reached the coldest part of winter and certainly a shock to the system after a relatively mild and dry season so far. Winter is, of course, the most popular time to be planting dormant ornamental trees, fruit trees and nut trees and any deciduous varieties we dig out of the paddock and sell in their bare rooted form. Many other plants can be planted in this way too, including bush and standards roses, raspberry canes, strawberry runners, asparagus

crowns and spring flowering bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees at Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees are the largest growers and suppliers of trees, fruit and nut, and thousands of roses direct from the paddock to you. This of course means big savings. We pride ourselves in providing top quality trees at the lowest prices and also one of the largest ranges of roses in Australia, and when you couple this

with our mail order service, we can send plants to literally all corners of the country, so you need look no further. We offer daily delivery services to Portland, Port Fairy, Warrnambool and beyond, right throught to Hamilton and Horsham, in Victoria, as well as all coastal ports up to Meningie, Naracoorte, Millicent, Robe, Kingston, Penola, Lucindale, Keith and Bordertown, not of course forgetting Mundulla. Over the past month and a half we have been busy packing our orders and distributing our lovely stock around the region and right across Australia. As the lowest priced rose grower in Australia, you are assured of quality stock and NO over inflated prices. We need to start wrapping up BARE ROOT SALES IN ORDER TO PREPARE FOR SPRING, WHICH I THINK IS GOING TO BE EARLY THIS YEAR. This can only mean one thing - Massive Sale. Yes, that’s right, across all of our fruit trees from dwarfs, including the 2015

new releases of dwarf apricots; Early Moorpark, Tilton and Divinity, as well as the new dwarf plums, Narrabeen the popular yellow fleshed plum in the Japanese plums, that has been around for years as a full sized tree, but now comes in a much more manageable size and can even be grown in a pot. We also have our popular Orchard Starter pack of any four fruit and nut trees for $89.95*. Ornamental trees have a minimum 20% off including all Flemings Trees and massive savings on Lipstick Maples and on monster sized nut trees that are $10 off as well as huge savings on Silver Birch, ornamental pears, Monster Claret Ash, London Plane trees and Golden Elms, (see advert facing page ) right through to our bush roses, including new releases, standards roses from only $23.95, weeping standards roses and so on. Bring your ute, truck, trailer, horse float, whatever and load up with bargains whilst stocks last. Our potted advanced tree section has trees up to 50% off to make way for the new season stock and this includes advanced lilly pilly, pittosporums,

natives and all deciduous trees right up to 150 litre bags. If you cannot get here jump on the website www.gardenarium. com.au or www. limestonecoastroses. com.au or simply ring (08)8723 1325 and we can deliver to you. Citrus trees are also $10 off in a number of grades including double grafted citrus trees, avocadoes, loquats, blueberries are also up to 25% off in the sale. Winter is a good time if you are on a rural block, farm or small acreage to be be planting shelter belts, screening and hedging trees. We have a huge selection from tube stock right through to advanced gum trees, conifer hedging and windbreaks, as well as a huge selection more suited to suburban situations such as photinias, pittosporums, viburnums and lilly pilly hedging all at great prices. Farm tree tubes and firewood tree tubes are also racing out the door so be quick before we run out. Magnolias are bursting in to bloom early this year and we are pleased to finally have three new varietites to offer that are more compact growing than the popular Felix, Black Tulip and Vulcan called Genie, Cleopatra and Cameo, (see website for details) and their velvety buds are about to burst in to flower, so hurry in before they all go. Sale specials run until July 31, unless sold out before hand, so don’t leave it until the last minute as we have already been quite busy with the sale being advertised locally on TV here for about a week. Gardenarium and the Limestone Coast group is located at 167, Bay Road, Mount Gambier, 1.3kms south of the Blue Lake. Calum Haygarth

LOCAL Scholarship recipients check in The Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® is proud to be a key partner of the Mount Gambier and Districts Tertiary Health Education Grant, which is a program aimed to support and foster local people who need to leave the region in order to undertake university studies in the health sector. Now in its ninth year, the grant is available for use towards supporting tertiary study costs such as travel, accommodation, text books and uniforms. The partnership, developed in conjunction with the two local councils, health sectors and other local businesses, provides these grants to encourage recipients to return to the district after graduation. In 2015 15 students received health education grants of $2000 each to aid their studies. After a busy first semester, the two grant students sponsored by the Mt Gambier & District Community Bank® visited the branch recently. Imogen Hardacre is studying a BA Health Science/ Master of Physiotherapy at Flinders University and Hayley Holder is undertaking a double degree of BA Nursing/Psychological Science (Mental Health Nursing) at Deakin University in Warrnambool. Hayley has long had an interest in mental health work, and has found the grant invaluable with her degree and living on campus expenses. “There have been many extra expenses such as uniforms and nursing equipment for placements, so the grant has been a huge help” she said. Imogen’s love for sport led to her physiotherapy degree, and she has used the grant towards rent expenses and textbooks. Also living on campus, Imogen has found this much more beneficial than having to rent elsewhere. “I’ve met

so many country people there, which has made my first year much easier to settle in.” she said. The Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® provides funding to this grant in addition to the Bank’s own Scholarship program. Branch Manager Tracy Koop said the grant support was part of the branch’s ongoing commitment to building stronger communities. “We’re proud to financially support local students to continue their education, which will not only be a benefit to them but also to the wider community,” she said, “Our young people are our future and their development is critical to this community’s success. Some students may face challenges in their ability to further their education and the program has been designed to give the students an opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Rod Laver : A Memoir Rod Laver Rod Laver’s memoir is the inspiring story of how a diminutive, left-handed, red-headed country boy from Rockhampton became one of Australia’s greatest every sporting champions. In 1962, Rod became the second man to win the Grand Slam in a single calendar year. In 1969 he won it again, becoming the only player ever to win the Grand Slam twice. His book is a wonderfully nostalgic journey into Australia’s sporting past, from the early days of growing up in a Queensland country town in the 1950s, to breaking into the amateur circuit, to the extraordinary highs of Grand Slam victories..

LOCAL Pop-Up bar created a fun space in proposed Town Square The proposed Penola Town Square in Young Street was quickly transformed into a Pop-Up Bar at the start of this month to the delight of visitors and locals. Steve Raidis, from Raidis Estate, said he was really pleased with how the event unfolded, and highlighted that it was a fun, novel event that clearly attracted a large crowd having their first experience of visiting Coonawarra. “Everyone seemed to have a really good time,” he said, “It was a great turn-out and above our expectations.” The event was billed as the first event to kickoff a month of Cellar Dwellers promotions in Coonawarra. “We need to do more of these sorts of events - it was great fun”, said Steve. With virtually all participating wineries having to replenish their wine stocks at some stage during the evening, it was indicative of how popular the event proved to be. Peter Robinson, from DiVine Café, said they

sold out of their Wagyu Beef Chilli and Chicken Korma dishes, and thought the event was worth the effort. “The event was well worth doing and we met a lot of (new) people which was even better”, said Mr Robinson. The novel initiative drew an estimated crowd of more than 100 people, demonstrating how the proposed Town Square space could be utilised for community events. “It has great potential as a community events space: it’s contained, intimate, but very accessible,” said Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated wine industry officer Cathy Hughes. Ms Hughes said that the CGWI was highly appreciative of the support from local retailers who remained open during the event, and to Wattle Range Council staff for their assistance in facilitating the various processes required to stage the event in the space for the first time.

Walking & talking for diabetes Portland residents are being encouraged to walk and talk to find out more about one of the region’s most common chronic diseases, diabetes. As part of National Diabetes Week, Active Health Portland and Portland District Health are hosting a walk on Tuesday, July 14, from 2.30pm, followed by an afternoon tea for people to learn about how much sugar and carbohydrates are hidden in snacks and drinks. National Diabetes Week is being held from July 12-18 and this year follows the theme `280 a day’ to recognise the number of people being diagnosed with the condition each day. Portland District Health Credentialled Diabetes Educator Vicki Barbary said the free afternoon tea and group walk aimed to highlight the benefits of exercise and a healthy diet to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and are key to managing glucose levels for those who have diabetes. “Diabetes remains one of our region’s most serious and prolific chronic conditions and more people are being diagnosed all the time, but in many cases people can make lifestyle changes to prevent it,” Ms Barbary said. People taking part in the event are being encouraged to wear blue in support of Diabetes Week. A total of 1.7 million Australians are living with diabetes and a further 280 develop the condition every day. Diabetes is serious and complications include heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. Anyone can develop diabetes- you don’t have to be old or overweight - and managing diabetes is a 24/7 effort. Portland District Health also hopes to form a type 1 support group and will hold an information night on Wednesday, August 5, at 7pm, at PDH training room. People can contact the PDH diabetes team on (03)5521 0653 or email: diabetes.pdh@swarh.vic.gov.au

LOCAL Hospitality training returns Hospitality training is returning to South West TAFE with a new course to have people job-ready by the end of the year. Hospitality courses were curtailed after budget cuts at the start of 2014 but are being revived due to industry demand and in response to high local youth unemployment. The Certificate III in Hospitality will start on August 3 with information sessions on Thursday, July 23, at 2pm and 6pm, at South West TAFE. South West TAFE Director of Tourism and Hospitality, Marcia McCarthy, said the new course would provide practical experience and deliver highly skilled hospitality staff to an industry calling out for help. Ms McCarthy said employers were looking for people with training and knowledge. “A skills-based course is an excellent way to prepare people for the workforce,” she said. “This course is very strongly geared to practical skills that will result in students getting work, including front of house, coffee making, responsible serving of alcohol, customer service, and preparing simple dishes. It’s a great career if you love working with people.” Ms McCarthy said skilled staff shortages were evident across the industry. “This course will support our local tourism and hospitality industry and also help to address our high youth unemployment,” she said. “Hospitality is labor-intensive and relies on skilled people to increase customer satisfaction and increase business performance. The training will also help to increase retention in the hospitality industry.” The Certificate III in Hospitality was previously offered as part of a Certificate IV program that led to a diploma course. Ms McCarthy said the Certificate III had been separated to deliver a course that would have job-ready hospitality workers by the end of the year. “We want students to come out

with qualifications by the end of the year so they can get into the workplace during the busiest time of the year,” she said. The course will be delivered three days per week along with industry-based placement. It can also be the start of a pathway into further training in events or tourism in 2016 and if there is sufficient demand units could blend into potential Certificate IV or Diploma courses in hospitality. South West TAFE is also reducing fees to make the course viable and a good investment for students. The reintroduction of hospitality training at South West TAFE has been welcomed by manager of the Lady Bay Resort and The Pavilion, Jon Watson. “Having spent years in the hospitality industry as an owner and manager of a range of venues I can honestly say that success is driven from the skills of staff,” Mr Watson said. “Having well trained front of house staff has meant our customers are satisfied and ensures return business.” Mr Watson said staff training was something that he paid special attention to. “I encourage anyone looking for employment in the hospitality sector to first look at gaining skills to guarantee their success,” he said

LOCAL Stepping back in time As you wander around Mount Gambier’s CBD you don’t have to take too many steps to find a cafe, coffee shop or somewhere to pick up an espresso. Back in the 1950s, you would have had to head to a capital city, most likely cosmopolitan Melbourne, to enjoy a cappuccino. That was before Jerry and Josephine Simsa moved to town – Jerry bringing with him his European tastes and a passion for culture and GiGi Coffee Lounge was born. It opened its doors in 1959 and was part of the Mount Gambier landscape until 1977. “It was ahead of its time,” Josephine said. “The cafe culture was only just emerging in the capital cities but when we came here Jerry decided to open a cafe and it was a great benefit

Phone

to the whole town and region.” GiGi became a focal point of activity in the town. “It was the place to be in Mount Gambier, it attracted visitors, tourists and artists and theatre people.” It was a time when shows came to town for more extended seasons and Gerry and Josie got to know the cast and crew intimately. The artists were attracted to GiGi because there was no art gallery in town at that time and Jerry was supportive of local artists – he was the first to exhibit the work of the talented Cathleen Edkins. ‘Cathleen same to him and asked if he would hang her paintings,” Josephine said. “He sold very successfully for her, it was a happy partnership.” It is a classic tale of refugee makes good - the flamboyant Czech coming to Australia

in the wake of World War II, arriving in 1952, and settling in Adelaide. That was where he met Mount Gambier local Josephine McDonough, who had been on a cattle station as a governess and was in the State capital on holidays. The couple met at the famous King William Street watering hole, The Australian, “It was a very posh drinks lounge and Jerry was there in a bow tie,” Josephine said. “We got to know each other.” And the rest, as they say, is history. Jerry was like no other man she had met before or Mount Gambier had seen for that matter. He spoke seven languages, was actively promoting artists from behind The Iron Curtain and was a talented musician. He opened GiGi on the corner of Penola Road and Commercial Street where

the current Bank SA resides. Running a cafe in a regional area was not without its challenges. “If anything needed serving or repairing it had to be taken to a capital city,” Josephine said. “I remember getting up at 4am to take the coffee machine to Melbourne. There was a place there that was very kind to us. They would do a service on a Sunday and we drive back and have it in place ready to go on Monday.” The who’s who of Mount Gambier frequented the smoke filled coffee lounge, while the staff were had working Italian migrant women, some of who are still in town today and many who have descendants still living in Mount Gambier. Names like Zaccardo and Ianella are synonymous

with GiGi. Gina Raisin remembers GiGi fondly. ‘It was the most exciting place I had even been to,” she said. It’s why she has helped Riddoch Art Gallery curator Jacqui Porter put the exhibition together. They have recreated the feel of GiGi, through kindly donated and sourced furniture and crockery, as well as the original sign. Art from Jerry’s Eastern European connections is also on display and will go under the hammer as a fundraiser for Ryder Cheshire and Kilbur Domin, its home in Timor Leste. The auction will be a closing event for the GiGI Exhibition on Friday, July 31 where 29 works will be up for sale. Numbers are strictly limited for the auction and tickets are $10 a head. SEABL Pioneers get the job done with blistering opening half at Icehouse A half time at the Icehouse on Friday night, the Castec Rural Supplies Pioneers led the struggling Brisbane Spartans 60-26 and if it wasn’t at quarter time, the match was definitely over by the main break. The Pioneers shared the glory with six players hitting double figures and 11 players with numbers in the rebound column after a second half that was a more even affair as the Pioneers got minutes into all 12 players, as none of its established stars racked up more than 30 minutes. The chance of a lop sided contest turned from probability to reality early in the contest as the Pioneers dominated the opening quarter and when they went on a 11-0 scoring spree in the final three minutes of the opening stanza, the writing was on the wall. In fact, the Spartans wouldn’t have scored at all in that time were it no for a late foul that sent guard Isaih Tueta to the line to secure those late two points for a 28-13 quarter time scoreline. And things just went from bad to worse for the visitors as the Pioneers put the foot down even further in the second quarter as the home crowd enjoyed the high quality clinic. The second quarter highlights reel was led by Damian Johnson, who scored 11 of his 21 points in this quarter, from three point territory to athletic attacking of the basket, as well as punctuating his second quarter scoring frenzy with a crowd pleasing dunk that also pushed the Pioneers lead

beyond 30 points for the first time in the contest. That was with 2:42 to play and when the siren went to signal half time, the lead was 34. The second half saw less intensity and polish on the back of a scrappy third quarter and another high scoring last from both sides with the final margin sitting at 38. Tyrone Lee continued his good form with another all round performance that saw him with five assists, a game high 15 rebounds and 16 points that again had a couple of trademark dunks included for entertainment value for the passionate Icehouse crowd. Brad Hill was the home side’s top scorer with 23 points, adding three steals and seven rebounds to his game statistics, while Spartans’ Tim Coenraad played almost with a lone hand with a game high 30. The Pioneers now host Sandringham, another lowly ranked opponent that are on a long losing streak, giving the Pioneers a chance to extend their winning streak to 14 and allow the staff another opportunity to rotate all players to give more exposure to its bench and also not hammer the bodies of its stars, with five rounds to play. And with a testing run home that includes both home and away clashes against North West Tasmania and match ups with the top two ranked East Conference teams Geelong and Albury Wodonga, the run into the play offs will certainly test the defending champions. CRICKET Young allrounder making his mark Matthew WalmsleyPace was part of North Gambier’s Barber Shield winning 2014/15 cricket team and like many young Australian cricketers he is now living the dream in England, playing cricket in the offseason. The 18 year old is playing for Cropredy in the Cherwell Cricket League, a placement organised by his Mount Gambier High School cricket mentor Tim Dyer. Matt made an impression in his first outing with an unbeaten 99, and followed that up with an impressive 132, also not out, as well as taking 5/19. Matt plays in a mid week T20 competition as well as the weekend matches and Cropredy is on top of the ladder in both competitions. When Matt’s team took on Banbury, he was up against former Australian wicketkeeper batsman Tim Paine and has also met English skipper Alistair Cook (pictured with Matt). Matt also coaches Cropredy’s under 15 team and works with one of the players, who has his own landscaping business. Matt is heading to this week’s 2nd Ashes Test at Lords, with Mr Dyer, who organised the trip, and will travel through Europe on his way home ready for North’s title defence, which will start in October.

After finishing the July 4 & 5 SA Country Football Championships runner-up, the Murray South East team saw six players selected in the SA Country team to play in the City v Country clash next year, including four from the South East. Penola spearhead Adam Merrett (below top right) was named at full forward with his Penola team mate and reigning KNT Medalist Ben McIntyre named as ruck rover. South Gambier midfielder Brett O’Neil made the side on a half back flank, with Kybybolite’s Billy Laurie (pictured above top) not only named on a wing for the SA Country team but was also adjudged the Murray South East player of the championships. The youth in the side showed they will be the future of this team, with the likes of Jack Dawe (above left) and Brad Bryant (above right) part of that brigade along with promising big men Jack Casey and Jak Ryan. The championships also honoured the late Crows coach Phil Walsh (minute’s silence pictured below).

MILLICENT BOWLS The decision by the Millicent Bowling Club’s Tournament Committee to change the club’s Thursday 2-4-2 social to a cosmopolitan format for the off-season has proven a great success. Each week the number of bowlers has been up on previous years and last Thursday was no exception with 50 attending the Mac Landrover 2-4-2. Team selection is done by the committee to try to keep an even playing field and this week was testament to their abilities with 10 of the 12 games played finishing even or with a one point margin. Winning teams were Sarah Ross & Glenn Schapel (29+1), Carlene Godden & Peter Varcoe (29+2), Brian Atkinson & Malcolm Wright (29+2), Wayne Ross & Lyn Scudds (29+6), Rosalie Burdon & Iain Campbell (30+2), Max Richards & Herb Henderson (30+2), Sam Schofield & Carl Schapel (30+2), Robert Atkinson & Terry Barnes (30+3), Dawn Bellman & John Scudds (31+4) and third place went to Frank Weber & Derk Pietersma (31+10). Second place went to Colin Pye & Graham Parsons with a score of 32+15 and the winners were the triples team of Bill Fennell, Dell Parsons & Andre Reinders who finished with 33+11.

Motor MOTOR MERCEDES BENZ WINS TOP DESIGN AWARD Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific has received critical acclaim for the new C-Class and S-Class Coupe, and been recognized by Good Design Australia for outstanding product design and innovation. The Good Design Awards, established in 1958, are regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious and coveted design prizes. “We are delighted to have been recognized for multiple Product Design awards in this year’s Good Design Awards” said Horst von Sanden, Managing Director Mercedes-Benz Cars and Chief Executive Officer, MercedesBenz Australia/Pacific. “Despite outstanding competiton, the judges have identified that our product design is among the best in the world, and we would like to thank them for their fair assessment and expertise.” The Good Design Australia judging panel said that “visually, the new C-Class represents a bold departure from its predecessor. Its design is muscular and full of character, at the same time showcasing its high-tech nature in a purist and exciting way. This combination of emotion and intelligence reflects the essence of the Mercedes-Benz brand.” The MercedesBenz S-Class Coupe was also highly regarded by the judges who said that, “. . . the S-Class Coupe combines design and technology to produce a masterpiece of automotive refinement.

Motorcycle display doubles as cancer fundraiser A double bonus for lovers of motorcycles this weekend with a stunning display at Mount Gambier’s City Hall – not only will some classic, vintage and just plain, mean, machines, be on display but all proceeds from the event will go to the Cancer Council SA. Organised by Tyrone Mustey, the Mount Gambier Moto Classica will run on Saturday from 9am-6pm and Sunday from 10am until 2pm. Entry is $5 for adults and children under 14 are free. “I know of many local people associated with motorcycling, motorcycle racing and club members, that have been effected by various forms of cancer,” Tyrone said. “The idea behind the event was to bring motorcycle enthusiasts together to display classic, vintage and racing machines and raise money for a worthwhile cause.” The Mount Gambier City Council has come on board with the use of the City Hall for the fundraiser, which will see a huge range of pre 1985 motorcycles on display. “The response from clubs, businesses

and the motorcycle community has been very positive and the venue is brilliant,” Tyrone said. “I had spinal surgery last year and while I was in the Flinders Neurosurgery ward I had some personal experience with the effects of cancer on patients in the ward, so I decided to combine my passion for motorcycles with a fund raising event to support Cancer Council SA.”
