Cellar Dwellers is the very popular annual Coonawarra event that showcases beautiful back vintage, special release and aged wines from a wide range of Coonawarra wine region cellars.“It’s a very special time of the year when Coonawarra winery staff bring out some truly outstanding wines to provide the public with some memorable tasting experiences that only occur in July. That’s why we’ve built this year’s event around the pure pleasure associated with tasting beautiful wines in a sublimely relaxing regional landscape” said Cathy Hughes, Wine Industry Officer for Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated (CGWI). She said everyone from wine lovers and connoisseurs, to visitors and locals alike, should visit Coonawarra anytime during the month of July to taste for themselves why Coonawarra wines are renowned the world over for their outstanding quality, flavour and cellaring abilities. “As the name suggests, Cellar Dwellers is a term that reflects both the exceptional cellaring abilities of our Cabernet Sauvignon wines in particular, as well as the sense of discovery that visitors to the region’s cellar doors will experience. A range of cellar door tastings, special food and wine events and vineyard experiences have been prepared by participating wineries to showcase the breadth and depth of Coonawarra wines, our emerging food destination credentials, with the warmth and hospitality that is so … Coonawarra,” said Ms Hughes. Ms Hughes said the 2015 Cellar Dwellers program has been released, and was packed with nearly 30 unique events including: comparative wine tastings over a 10 year period; museum release wines from very old or selected vineyards; a tour with six winemakers in one day; special food and wine dinners prepared by highly acclaimed local chefs; and even the chance to savour a rare 50 year old tawny port. “We’re also continuing with a walking trail passport that offers one lucky winner to chance to win a VIP pass for two to one of the cities on our National Wine Tasting Roadshow, plus a mixed half dozen of Coonawarra wines, after they’ve visited five participating wineries,” she said. Cellar Dwellers was a concept dreamt up more than a decade ago to invigorate the wine region during the quieter winter months. It’s early and continued success has seen it remain on the Coonawarra calendar along with other landmark events including Cabernet Weekend and Coonawarra After Dark. The Cellar Dwellers program can be viewed at www.coonawarra.org For more information contact individual cellar doors listed in the program or the CGWI at enquiries@ coonawarra.org

LOCAL Celebrating 50 years of broadcasting The tapes will rewind on half a century of memories when staff of South East Telecasters (SES 8) and WIN Television come together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mount Gambier station. The 8-Ball at the Barn Palais on Saturday, March, 19, will be the ultimate staff party, as past and present employees celebrate the golden age of regional television complete with video and photographic highlights unearthed from the extensive station archives. Former newsreader and weather presenter Jeff Sly will act as MC for the formal dinner dance, which has been initiated by a small committee of ex-staffers. “I think the fact that we have all moved on or retired but still want to celebrate this occasion reflects the high regard we felt for our workmates and our time spent there,” said cameraman Rob Tremelling. “The station may have changed considerably in recent years, but the memories endure, and a 50th anniversary needs to be celebrated.” The committee’s biggest job will be trying to track down the station alumni spread across the globe. Darryl ‘Sid’ Hosking, who was a cameraman at the station for 44 years, has been compiling a database of employees, which includes high profile media personalities Sandy Roberts, Peter Meakin and Leith Mulligan, and well-known current Adelaide television reporters Mark Mooney, Peter McDonald, Jack Berketa and Lauren Barker. “We’re really hoping that traditional and social media will both help to spread the word and put us back in touch with those who have moved away or married,” he said adding that a SES 8/WIN TV – 50th Anniversary Reunion page and a Past Employees page have been set up on Facebook. WIN SA manager Jim Kirkup,is among the longserving employees, and said he looks forward to catching up with current and past colleagues. “There has been more than 370 staff working here over the past 50 years, with up to 50

people employed at any one time across a range of departments including sales, news, traffic, production, technical, accounts and administration,” he says. “It will be great to see as many staff as possible at the event.” Former news journalist, Gretel Sneath, said Channel 8 had made an indelible impression on both staff and generations of viewers across the Limestone Coast and Victoria’s Western District. “From the regional news and programs like Cartoon Connection, Woman’s World and At Home, to on-air sports coverage, Christmas parades, junior forecasters, golf days and corporate tents, station staff put a massive effort and skillset into celebrating our community and encouraging public involvement and ownership, and this reunion is a true celebration of that effort,” she said.

The Beachport/Rivoli Bay Lions Club has accepted a donation in appreciation of their assistance and continuing support in the running of the Beachport Triathlon event in the seaside town. The cheque for $1500, portion of the proceeds from the event, was presented to Lions representatives Hayden Mansell and Peter Hill by Wattle Range Council’s Kintore Ward Councillors Peter Dunnicliff and Kevin McGrath. “The Lions have provided volunteer assistance to the event since its establishment” said Wattle Range Council chief executive officer Peter Harriott. “Council have taken on the role of coordinating the event this year and we have found the support of the local Lions invaluable,” he said. “The Lions Club of Beachport do a fantastic job in helping the organisers with key roles at the Beachport Triathlon. Whether it’s marshalling, course set up or just making sure the town is looking at its best the Lions Club have it covered.” Planning is already underway for next year’s event which will be held on Sunday, March 6, and council is looking forward to continued support from volunteers, sponsors and the wider Beachport community.

LOCAL CHEMOTHERAPY SERVICE CLEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY IN PORTLAND Portland District Health has 236 reasons to celebrate the first anniversary of its day stay chemotherapy service. That’s how many rounds of chemotherapy treatments that have been completed in the service’s first year; far outstripping the contracted 91. The first anniversary was marked with a morning tea in the day room at PDH at 10.30am on Thursday, June 25. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the high number of treatments proved the need for the unit. “Demand for the service has far exceeded our expectations, proving how much it was needed in our community,” Ms Giles said. “It has been a terrific addition for local people and saved them a lot of travel and inconvenience during a difficult time in their lives,” she said. Portland District Health Nursing Unit Manager for the Sub Acute Ward, Natalie Herbertson, said patients were appreciative of the local service. “They are extremely grateful for the local service, which makes everything much easier for them,” Ms Herbertson said. “In addition to the 236 treatments, we’ve had 17 flushes to provide accesses for medications so patients don’t have to keep getting injections,” she added. “Previously they would have needed to go to Warrnambool for this service.” The oncologists have also reviewed 46 other inpatients who weren’t having chemotherapy. .

LOCAL Volunteer mentors setting a great example Glenelg Shire Council’s Learner to Probationary (L2P) Driver Program urgently requires new volunteers to help local young people learn to drive. The mentors are volunteers from the community who undertake a selection and training process to fulfil the role as a supervising driver. Mentors develop and maintain a supportive and ongoing relationship with the young person they are matched with by meeting with the learner driver for a minimum of one hour per week. Mentoring provides opportunities to meet new people and to develop new skills as well as providing a much needed community service. For anyone interested in mentor training opportunities please contact: Sharon Bridgewater Program Coordinator L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program Glenelg Shire Council Ph: 03 5522 2172 Mb: 0466 149 341 WHAT THE VOLUNTEERS HAVE TO SAY: Cheryl Ford (pictured with her student, Boi)

edit - glenelg shire driving program.indd 1

When Cheryl Ford saw an advertisement asking for people to become volunteer mentors with Glenelg Shire Council’s Learner to Probationary (L2P) Driver Program, her first thought was that it seemed like something really worthwhile. More than four years on, she continues to thrive on what she can offer the young people of Portland through the program. “It is a very worthwhile project … I think the licence is a ticket to a brighter future,” she said. “It is hard to get a job without a licence and it is even more difficult to get a licence if there is no car available for you to learn to drive. “I have been fortunate to be able to have a job most of my life, to have access to a car, an education, three meals a day, and a bed to sleep in – but there are many young people, even in Portland, for whom these things do not occur automatically.” As soon as they are able to cope with a longer drive, Cheryl spends at least two hours with her learner each week. “Sometimes we do a longer drive, and it has been up to six hours, with breaks of course,” she said. “As a mentor, it’s important to develop a relationship with the driver, particularly if it is over a long period of time. “Anything they share with me is confidential, and I hope that I have been able to help some of them over some pretty tough times in their lives.” Cheryl is employed as part of Glenelg Shire Art Centre’s Front of house team on a casual basis and in her busy schedule she also finds time to volunteer with the netball association, Loaves and Fishes, NILS, Portland South School, U3A and her church. “I find that everything fits easily if you are interested in what you are doing…sometimes it takes a bit of juggling, but generally it works, and I hope it keeps the cogs turning,” she said. “If you have some time on your hands, patience, and if you are interested and genuinely care about people, give it a go.” lifestyle1.net | 24

Jan Lineker (pictured with her student, Kyra)

L2P Program volunteer mentor Jan Lineker is counting down until the moment she gets to see one of her learner drivers obtain their P Plates. She’s been working with the program for nearly a year and said it was very satisfying working with young people and being able to help them achieve. “When I saw the advertisement for the program, I was already working with young people,” she said. “If you like working with young people, go for it: The L2P Program is very rewarding.” Jan spends two hours helping young people learn to drive each week and fits it in around her part-time work as a school crossing supervisor, which she has been doing since retiring from business last year. And she’s not new to volunteering - she has also been Girl Guide Leader for nearly 27 years, with a variety of roles, is a Justice of the Peace with Portland Library, and has been on various committees over the years, including Scouts, Portland South Primary, Portland special events, Nursing Mothers and Sunday School. Lesley Holmes (pictured with her student, Rhiannon)

For Lesley Holmes, the first thing that comes to mind when she thinks of Glenelg Shire Council’s L2P Program is the friendships she has formed since she began teaching learners to drive in July 2011. A close second, is the great accomplishment both she and her learner feel when a driving test is passed. Previously a volunteer with Portland Cable Tram and Portland District Health, Lesley said she spent up to two hours with the L2P Program each week, depending on her learner driver’s availability. She said the only negative was a miscommunication between the driver and mentor when it came to setting lesson times, but that this was all part of the learning process for a young person.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY I feel like I’ve been to Sweden... by Robbie Tansel I had an unusual experience this week. I spent a couple of days without Donna my partner and our little terror Shaquille. It’s fair to say that leading up to

Healthy choices the focus of kids kitchen program Portland Primary School students are cooking to a new recipe that will have longterm health benefits for their families and the community. United Way Glenelg has funded a new `Kidz in the Kitchen’ program that offers sustainable and healthy cooking classes for students in grades 3-6. The students are also growing vegetables in the community garden and school garden. The classes aim to provide knowledge and practical cooking skills to promote low cost, healthy eating and in the long run decrease obesity and its related health issues and eating disorders. Recipes are also being shared in the school newsletter and on websites and it is planned to collect and publish them in a low cost cookbook. United Way Glenelg funding has been used to renovate the existing school canteen to a kitchen for students to learn, prepare and cook healthy meals from fresh produce. Portland Primary School cooking teacher and Kidz in the Kitchen coordinator Colleen Brown said she was looking forward to working with students to create healthy low-cost meals they can then share with their families. Laminated recipes with information about cost and nutrition are being sent home with students so the family can recreate the meal, Ms Brown added. The program reinforces the Portland SEA Change (Sustainable Eating and Activity Change) program to improve the eating, fitness and lifestyle habits of local people. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Angelino said educating primary school children in the value of preparing and cooking a healthy diet would provide long term health benefits and reduce obesity and other related wellbeing issues. “United Way Glenelg applauds the Portland Primary community for supporting this initiative through the use of volunteers and local resources,” Ms Angelino said. Volunteer parent helpers have been asked to join the program, including those with limited cooking skills who can also benefit from the classes. The menu choices are made in consultation with health promotion team leader at Portland District Health, Lindy Stuchbery. More than 50 students and their families are benefitting from the program. Ms Brown said `Kidz in the Kitchen’ addresses many issues in the community. This project will contribute to better health, improve information about nutrition, and encourage families that rely on take-away food to consider low-cost cooking that is filling and satisfying.”The Kidz in the Kitchen program is expected to run for three years.

my little break I was a little bit excited. To put it into perspective, it’s very rare to have this sort of freedom. We’re the sort of family that spend most of our free time together. As parents we made the decision that we were going to raise our child which would mean that we wouldn’t be palming him off to family members or other child care options very often. I’m not belittling anyone who does put their child into care as many people do need to do this for one reason or another. I’m just saying that it was going to be an extremely rare treat to have some time to myself. It didn’t turn out to be quite as exciting as I was expecting. In fact I came to the conclusion that I might be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. For those who are unaware, Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon where hostages develop empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors. I was expecting pure joy in being by myself, but I missed my captors. Here’s how it went. One thing I was looking forward to was the drive to and from Adelaide. I was going to have nine hours or so to listen to whatever I wanted to on my car’s sound system. No Dorothy the Dinosaur. No Big Red Car. Proper music. I could also stop when it suited me, not when a child was screaming from being forced to sit in a car seat for 30 whole minutes, or for our 17th pee stop. What I found was the quiet was too much. I’ve become accustomed to constant interaction and explaining the minutiae of everything around me all day long. Having a child waffling in my ear all the time distracts me from the voices in my head which are far more destructive. By the time I reached Adelaide I had some time for shopping. This part of the trip really was a bit of a treat. What I found though was that I’ve lost the ability to accurately estimate the time that something will take if I’m without child. With child I know that everything will take infinitely longer. Getting out of the car becomes a 15 minute saga.

Let us take the stress away

I knew how much time I had available to me for shopping before an evening appointment. I knew that I would be able to wander through the shops that interested me much quicker than on shopping trips with Shaquille. These trips normally involve me searching through stores trying to figure out where he has disappeared to now. I had an hour and a half available to me which seemed about right. Twenty minutes later I was done and wondering what I was going to do for the next hour. With Shaquille I could have let him run off and played hide and seek for a while. Tea by myself was another mixed blessing that I’d been looking forward to but didn’t quite live up to the promise. As any parent knows, tea with a toddler involves arguing about what will be eaten, telling them to stop playing with their food, trying to fish peas out of whichever orifice they’ve been inserted into and demands for something other than what has been served. Eating tea without all these issues seemed pretty attractive. That was until I spent an hour sitting in Pizza Hut by myself. Now I love Pizza Hut. o trip to Adelaide is complete without all I can eat at Pizza Hut and with no child irritating me, and no Donna making me eat vegetables, it was going to be brilliant. But there’s something just a little bit sad about eating all you can eat at Pizza Hut by yourself. Literally by myself, by the way. I was the only one in the restaurant for about half an hour with the lovely staff standing around looking at the loser at table four gorging himself on pizza to fill the empty space in his heart. By this stage I was definitely missing my two offsiders and wondering what they’d done to me. Even the good night sleep I’d been anticipating was a let down. A bed all to myself with no reason to get up in the morning. No bad sleeping child arriving in my bed at half past one to scratch his toenails up and down my back and kick me repeatedly. What could go wrong? Well apparently the last three years has changed my internal clock to the point I wake up at six a.m. regardless of what my brain thinks the plan is. As you can see, my period as a prisoner has definitely affected my psyche. I am clearly a shell of the person I used to be, but that’s probably not such a bad thing. Email me at robbietansel@gmail. com if you think you can help me with my issues.

New science course for Deakin Warrnambool A new Bachelor of Science course starting next year at the Deakin University Warrnambool Campus will give students more flexibility to pursue a career in the field. The course will feature two major streams in freshwater biology and fisheries and aquaculture and has been designed to produce graduates that meet the needs of employers. A third major sequence in mathematical modelling is also available for students in the cloud. Students can complete the three-year course in Warrnambool or start or end their study at another campus. The Bachelor of Science course at the Warrnambool Campus will be run alongside the Bachelor of Environmental Science Marine Biology degree which is continuing to build in strength. Degree coordinator Dr Julie Mondon said that the new course was part of Deakin University’s plans to establish a centre of excellence in aquatic disciplines in Warrnambool. “Collectively the triple degree structure enables students to build skills across aquatic disciplines extending from very broad biological applications, to conservation and management, through to wild harvesting and aquaculture,” Dr Mondon said. The new course offers greater flexibility and options for students Students can complete the total course in Warrnambool or do their first year locally and then transfer to another campus to follow another major stream. Alternatively, students could complete their first year of study in Melbourne to Geelong and then transfer to Warrnambool for the freshwater biology and fisheries and aquaculture streams. Senior lecturer in marine biology, Dr Alecia Bellgrove, who will teach units in the new course, said there was already strong interest in the course. “We think there’s demand in the area,” she said. “The feedback from talking to careers teachers is that there’s interest from a number of students. Hopefully it’s opening opportunities for local students and the potential for more students to move to Warrnambool for part or all of their degree.” Dr Bellgrove said the majors reflected the strengths of the campus and what employers are wanting. “We work closely with our industry partners and natural resource stakeholders to build the skills in our graduates that employers are looking for,” she said. Dr Bellgrove expected student numbers to grow over time.

LOCAL Jam & chutney challenge returns The search is back on for the best jams, chutneys, pickles, jellies and sauces for the 2015 Great Victorian Jam and Chutney Challenge. Get tasting those summer fruit jams, peeling that winter citrus and tweaking the sauce recipe, because the GJVCC will again put up one of the biggest cash prizes on offer for preserved goods. Each of the 11 entry categories will have a first prize of $200 cash, and a whopping $1000 cash prize is on offer for the overall best entry of the Challenge. To be held in Hamilton, in the heart of Victoria’s fertile Western District, the Challenge aims to bring out the best preserve makers and encourage the next generation of cooks to learn the skills of jam, chutney and sauce making. The inaugural Challenge held last year attracted more than 100 entries from across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Challenge spokesperson Helen Freeman said the 2015 event would feature an additional category, and a weekend masterclass on how to perfect preserve making. “We knew there would be some fabulous jams, chutneys and sauces out there when we put on the Challenge last year and we were not disappointed, the standard of entries was excellent,” she said. “This year we’ve tweaked the entry classes to give even more opportunity for people to enter.” This year’s challenge will be judged by returning CWA Victoria representative, Janette O’Keefe, and avid promoter of ‘granny skills’, author and cook Rebecca Sullivan of Dirty Girl Kitchen. “Rebecca travels the world promoting ‘granny skills’ just like the Great Victorian Jam and Chutney Challenge is trying to preserve them and pass them on to the next generation by encouraging entries from people of all ages,” Helen said. “Rebecca will bring a wealth of skills to the judging table when it comes to what makes a good preserve. “And we are thrilled to have Janette returning again, she was so impressed by the standard of entries

last year she couldn’t wait to get back on board in 2015.” To ensure entry standards remains high, Janette is offering a weekend masterclass to delve into the nitty gritty of jam and preserve making, ensuring everyone entering knows how marmalades need the pith cooked well, and pickles need just the right amount of vinegar. The GVJCC masterclass will take place on Sunday, July 26, at the Hamilton (Gray Street) Primary School open learning area, 2pm-4pm. Afternoon tea will be provided. Please RSVP to (03)5571 9295. Information on entry classes and terms and conditions for the 2015 Great Victorian Jam and Chutney Challenge are available online at www. greatvictorianjamandchutneychallenge.com.au or from the Hamilton Gray Street Primary School office. The competition is open to entries from across Australia. Winners of the Great Victorian Jam and Chutney Challenge will be announced at the Hamilton (Gray Street) Country Fairy on Saturday, October 24.

LOCAL Calves shine a light on dairy careers More than 90 excited students and teachers from the Mount Gambier region were awarded for completing Cows Create Careers – Farm Module, in June. The presentation day recognised seven schools from the region that had completed the program, including Lucindale Area School, Kingston Community School, Allendale East Area School, Grant High School, Millicent High School, Kongorong Primary School and Compton Primary School. Prizes were awarded to the winning schools and to student teams such as, ‘Dejamoo and ‘Amooozing Heifers’. Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a National Centre for Dairy Education program funded by Dairy Australia and industry sponsors. The Cows Create Careers program aims to increase student awareness of Dairy Industry careers in a very hands on way. Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-week-old calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7 and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost. Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module. Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program Manager, Tracy Lloyd,

said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to over 210 schools across Australia with 9,456 students completing the program in 2014. “Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms Lloyd. “By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.” The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave almost 2000 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions. Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives additional support across the state from local companies Rural Bank, SADA Fresh, La Casa Del Formaggio, Devondale Murray Goulburn, ABS Australia, Provico, Total Result Ag Consulting Pty Ltd, South East Vets, District Council of Grant, Genetics Australia and

Laucke Mills, have continued to support the program in the Mt Gambier SA region. “Volunteers play a vital role in encouraging and supporting student career decision making,” Ms Lloyd said. “The program directly benefits from the generous dedication of volunteers who have knowledge of the industry and links to education and employment sectors.” For more information visit http://www.dairyaustralia. com.au/People-and-skills/Education-and-careers/ Secondary-School-Resources/Cows-Create-Careers/ Farm-Module.aspx Dairy Australia is the national services body for the Australian dairy industry. LOCAL Graphic designer dances his way to title

Swinging with the Stars is Stand Like Stone’s exciting annual major fundraising event where local ‘Stars’ partner up with local dancers to wow judges with their newly developed dancing skills and raise money for Stand Like Stone. This year, Ben Hood, one half of the helloFriday duo, and his dance partner, Katherine Miller took out the title, winning the popular event at the end of last month. Winning was just the icing on the cake for Ben and Katherine. It was one of Katherine’s dreams to be a part of Swinging with the Stars, so winning was a great bonus. Ben was also very excited and very chuffed that he had won, saying he definitely

wouldn’t have won if he wasn’t dancing with longtime friend, Katherine. Ben’s road to success was a long one, he recounts the first rehearsals as “really hard”. Quickstep was the first routine learnt and Ben says that it was probably the easiest dance of all. “The jive was the hardest because there’s a lot of lifts in it and a lot of spinning around and waving your arms about that you also have to do in time.” The most enjoyable dance for Ben was undoubtedly the tango, where he got to really get into character and look really serious. As a whole, the group of Stars have raised a collective amount of more than $60,000 with donations still coming

in. “Fundraising was challenging because all the stars are busy in their own right and to organise that was sort of just an extra thing to get done, but at the same time it was for a great cause so it was fine.” Ben’s fundraising involved auctioning off items at the Gold Cup and working with fellow star, David Fox to put on a Friday Night Fever event at the South Aussie where they had raffles. All the Stars showed true sportsmanship and attended each others fundraising events which Ben says was “really good”. Lauren Holmes originally agreed to take part in Swinging with the Stars because she wanted an opportunity to learn the Latin and ballroom dances but fundraising quickly became her priority. Lauren won the People’s Choice award, which is awarded to the Star that raises the largest amount of money for the Stand Like Stone foundation. She was modest in her achievements, thanking her friends and family for the support they provided. “I thank my friends and family for being very supportive even when I had crazy ideas like putting on a dinner auction within three weeks,” she said. Individually, she has raised more than $16,000 through various fundraising events, including a Cadbury Chocolate fundraiser, a movie screening at the Oatmill Cinema for the premiere of Pitch Perfect 2, a shopping and wine tasting bus trip to Robe, a dinner auction at the Absolute, lucky squares and a gate raffle at West Gambier Football Netball Club. “In terms of fundraising the first lesson I learnt was how to ask people for things, and once I learnt that I learnt how willing people are to help and support Stand Like

Stone”. Lauren also found fundraising hard work, but she says that now, seeing the end result, it was worth it. Both Ben and Lauren find it hard to pinpoint one ‘favourite memory’ but they both speak fondly of the friendships formed throughout the entire experience. If Ben had the chance, he would take the opportunity to participate again in a heartbeat, “The whole experience was fantastic and anyone honoured with the opportunity to participate should.” The actual night was also a highlight, with Lauren saying “I haven’t stopped playing the songs from Saturday night”. NETBALL - Champions again

SEABL Pioneers starting to put the foot down The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers have streaked to a 13-2 win loss record with an impressive home court victory over Bendigo on Friday night. The Pioneers won every quarter, taking control of the match halfway through the second quarter and refusing to concede ground from that point on. Damian Johnson, Tom Daly and Tyrone Lee led the way, as all 12 of the Pioneers squad got a taste of the finals like atmosphere. The match started with a very defensive mindset from both sides and it took almost a minute and a half for either team to score. The home side was forced to jack up low percentage perimeter shots early but when they did finally his the scoreboard it was in style – a Tyrone Lee dunk that gave the Icehouse crowd a reason to cheer. The opening quarter remained an arm wrestle as Daly was the go to player for the Pioneers. Skipper Matt Sutton hit a three with 2:24 on the clock, giving the home side a three point buffer, its biggest lead of the quarter, and it was Sutton again, also from beyond the arc, that restored the lead for the home side heading into the first break. The match continued in the same vein early in the second before the Pioneers stepped up the intensity at both ends of the court. The defensive heat was turned up, and at the offensive end, the home side started to run good sets to open up players for solid shots, Daly, Johnson and Burdon

were beneficiaries of those shots and when Burdon hit one of his trademark three pointers, the margin was a then, game high eight points. Every time the Braves threatened to eat into the Pioneers’ lead, there was someone on the floor quick to up the ante and deny the visitors any clear air. Johnson was certainly one getting it done at both ends of the court – blocks and defensive boards, as well as hitting critical mid range jumpers. At the main break, the home side enjoyed a seven point buffer, and they wasted little time taking complete control of the contest in the third - the championship quarter. It was a Johnson dunk that saw the margin stretch to 14 and that was around the margin things stayed for much of the third. When Burdon sunk a two with four minutes to play, the advantage was 18 points, and it looked set to be a complete whitewash but the Braves fought back with an 8-0 run and by the final change it was only a nine point margin with the Braves till well and truly in the hunt. Once again, the Pioneers pushed the Braves’ deficit out to past double figures early in the last and with the vocal home crowd behind them, cruised home to a 14 point victory.

The Western Border 13 & Under team is not only the South Australian Country Champions but now the Victorian titleholders as well, defeating Mornington in the title decider in Melbourne on Sunday, 11-9.

CALISTHENICS Krymzon students set to hit the stage for mid year concert Krymzon Calisthenics is once again holding a midyear concert at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre. Krymzon currently boasts 80 pupils, ranging in age from 2-27, as well as two teachers. They teach a variety of calisthenics disciplines, including rods, free arm, marching, clubs, aesthetics, folk dance, song and dance and a fun review at the end of each concert. Pupils also have the opportunity to learn solo performances. The aim of the midyear concert is for pupils to experience being on stage, “It’s a chance for our fun teams to get more time on stage,” Krymzon Calisthenics’ Leah Fox said. “Our competition teams go away and get plenty of experience on stage but this is a wonderful chance to get the fun students on stage again and

get more of that valuable on stage experience”. Each team does two items in full costume, making the entire concert a full ninety minutes. Krymzon has been putting on midyear concerts for the past four years and each year they’ve been very successful, “The kids love being on stage” Leah said. The concert will be held this Saturday at 2pm and will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children under 17. Leah is urging the community to come and support one of their local dance schools, “We would love everyone to come along and have a look.”
