COVER

New faces take on McDonald’s Mount Gambier As Mount Gambier farewells and thanks an outstanding local businessman in Bernie Knight, we welcome to the area McDonald’s licensees Bryce and Liz Crick. Hailing from Naracoorte, where the couple own and run the town’s McDonald’s, Bryce and Liz are thrilled to join the Mount Gambier community. The parents of two will be splitting their time between the two regional centres and look forward to becoming locals in their own right. In taking over the city’s McDonald’s, the Cricks have praised former licensee Bernie Knight for his generous support of the community over the past 16 years. “Over the years, Bernie has developed strong relationships with community and sporting groups in the local area,” Bryce said. “Liz and I are looking forward to working with these groups to support the valuable work they do within the community.” True McDonald’s success stories, Bryce and Liz both started their careers with McDonald’s at the age of 15 and have worked their way up from crew, to management and now restaurant owners. The couple firmly believe in the employment and training opportunities provided by McDonald’s. “McDonald’s provides an unmatched opportunity for young people to learn skills that can be applied throughout their working lives,” Bryce said. “We are proud to provide employment, training and growth opportunities to our staff and are pleased to now include Mount Gambier locals in this group.” As one of Australia’s biggest employers and trainers of young people,

McDonald’s offers employees a clear path from crew person to restaurant management. With access to extensive training and developmental opportunities, employees will gain skills that have proved to form a solid foundation for a diverse range of careers.

Nationally McDonald’s invests more than $40 million annually on training crew, managers and corporate employees, offering nationally accredited traineeships and qualifications. The Cricks and McDonald’s Mount Gambier are always on the hunt for new staff. To find

SKIN CANCER AWARENESS IN FOCUS

Member for Barker, Tony Pasin, joined Allan Border in Parliament House to promote awareness of melanoma skin checks and to take part in the Pollie Skin Check last week. “A higher risk of skin cancer is a threat Australian’s face every day, but getting a skin check with your local GP is a fast, easy and effective way to reduce that risk,” said Mr Pasin. Former Australian Test Captain Allan Border said he spent a lot of time outside knows it’s not only important to protect your skin from the sun, but also check it for any changes. “Having a terrific Ambassador like Allan Border, who has spent so much of his life playing for Australia in the full glare of Australia’s brutal summer sun is a great way to remind people of the importance of getting checked regularly,” said Mr Pasin. “It took me 5 minutes to get my entire body checked today and have the reassurance this provides. I encourage all Barker residents, but especially those who spend a disproportionate period of their day outside, to get a skin check as soon as they can.”

fter nearly 16 years Anne and Bernie Knight the owners of the McDonald’s Family Restaurant are calling it a day. Bernie and Anne have been a part of the Mt. Gambier community and have successfully grown their Mt. Gambier McDonald’s Store into the largest store in the South Australia market. “Yes, we are the biggest selling store in South Australia and one of the busiest stores in Australia” Bernie offered. “It’s all thanks to the great staff we have and a supportive community” Anne added. A supportive community that has seen the Mt. Gambier store voted the McDonald’s store of the Year in 2012. Just one of many awards that the Mt. Gambier Store has received, with additional awards including the Outstanding Community Award in 2006 and 2009. “It has been a very rewarding time personally for us in Mt. Gambier and both Anne and I have tried to give as much back as possible to the Mt. Gambier people. We currently employ over 160 staff and I guess over 2000 staff over the years” Bernie recalls.

mcdonald's PRINT - FP.indd 1

“You may recall the TV commercial outlining the training program we ran in partnership with schools in Mt. Gambier, just one of the many things we were involved in.” Bernie added. Bernie and Anne have been nominated a number of times for awards and have have always acknowledge Mt. Gambier. “It’s’ the community that makes a business and we are no different here at Mt. Gambier” Anne states. Bernie and Anne will leave Mt. Gambier, but will maintain strong ties with the community as they along with their son Todd will continue to run the Portland, Victoria McDonald’s store and no doubt will be seen often in the Mt. Gambier store with new owners Bryce and Liz Crick. Bryce and Liz whom are the current owners of the Naracoorte McDonald’s Store bring over 37 years of McDonald’s experience between them to the Mt. Gambier McDonalds Store. “It’s business as usual at McDonald’s Mt. Gambier as Bryce and Liz settle in. I’m sure they will love Mt. Gambier as we have”, Anne offered.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s not easy... by Robbie Tansel Some of you might already know this, but being a parent can be quite challenging. The same way that somehow grabbing a couple of rocks off the moon tomorrow is a bit challenging. Impossible is another word for it I think. There are days as

a parent where if your partner said, “You can get Junior to eat his vegetables or try and solve cancer,” you’d probably answer with, “I guess I better go buy a Bunsen burner and some test tubes then.” There are days where the negotiations to get Junior to put some pants on are more difficult than trying to negotiate a meaningful peace between Israel and Palestine. “If you want to go and dig holes in your underwear on a three degree Mount Gambier rainy Winter day, who am I to argue? What would I know?” There are days where if a genie granted me three wishes and I said I’d like him to give me the ability to get my toddler to follow my instructions, he’d say, “Check the conditions of wish. I can’t grant you superpowers.” I think one of the reasons being a parent is so difficult is because you’re under the mistaken impression that a child is a human. Little known fact – children are actually not humans. They don’t become human until after they finish high school, or even later in some cases. There are many key differences between humans and children. One of the most interesting of these differences is with the sense of hearing. Children have what can only be described as an inconsistent sense of hearing.

Non Surgical Face Lift

Introduction pricE

If you’re telling a child what to do, they never listen. “Put that down.” Can’t hear you. “Don’t put that in there.” Can’t hear you. “It’s time for bed.” Can’t hear you. But mention the word chocolate and they will hear you from two kilometres away. Likewise if there’s something you don’t want them to hear suddenly, they develop superhearing…and an ability to spell. Despite the fact they’re only three years old and don’t know any of the letters of the alphabet. I was wondering recently why parenting seems so hard, but when I look back on my parents and their parenting of me, it didn’t seem that difficult. Think about your own parents. Is it just the mists of time or were they better at it than us. Or were we just better behaved as children. I think there are a few reasons other reasons parenting seemed easier. For starters you didn’t have to parent as much a few decades ago. Essentially your kids were safe. You could push them out the back door, not worry about supervising them at all, then open the door and let them in for tea at night. The world was safer. Either that or parents just couldn’t really be stuffed. These days we’re so worried about paedophiles, terrorists, venomous animals, poisonous toxins and any one of dozens of others of dangers. We are constantly watching every little thing they do, waiting for the chance to run in and save them from danger. Life is also a little more complicated these days, but mainly because that’s how we’ve made it. Think of your Dad back in the day. He didn’t spend a couple of hours surfing the net, watching funny cat videos on Youtube and updating his Facebook account. He read the paper then went, “Bloody hell, it’s 7:30. It’s time to go to bed. It’s bloody late.” If he got through the paper particularly quickly, he might mix things up and spend a little bit of time in his shed. He certainly wasn’t playing his PS4. Adults didn’t play computer Pattern and kit games. Having thought in stock. about it carefully, I came to the conclusion that there is one change that has made being a parent more difficult. Quite simply our parents could hit us and everyone would think they were doing a great job of parenting, not abusing us. In those days people would have considered you a bad parent if you weren’t beating your 1 Anthony Street, children. I’m certainly not Mount Gambier suggesting people should Phone 08 8725 4933 be hitting their children. But boy it’s tempting Fax 08 8723 9733 every now and then to OPEN give them a good shake. AT THE GALLERY On Becoming – Brent Harris • HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON • Until July 19 Painter and printmaker Brent Harris is one of art’s great individualists. Whatever your taste in art, Brent Harris offers a challenge to most viewers with his beautifully crafted work. The prints in this exhibition were gift to the gallery and were produced from 1989 until 2004.

Learning from the best Neville Bonney, author of “What South East Plant is That?”, is running two workshops in the Upper South East to demonstrate how to use his book to identify native vegetation. Mr Bonney is no stranger to the South East of South Australia and over the past 50 years has built a wealth of knowledge concerning native flora. This passion for Australian native plants has led him to spend his life working on a range of topics including seed collecting, propagation, landscaping, revegetation and farm forestry. Mr Bonney has also written on growing wild plants for consumption and works with Aboriginal groups in understanding ethnobotany of Australian native plants. Now in retirement, Mr Bonney has put his life’s work into print. The following workshops will explain how to use “What South East Plant is That?”

LOCAL Mark your calendars for third winter fun run Plans are heating up for the third annual Winter Solstice Fun Run, with a steady stream of runners and walkers already registered for the June 21 event in Portland. The event has grown in popularity over the last two years, gaining a strong reputation as a fun and family-friendly event that encourages people of all abilities to be active in winter. Last year’s fun run saw almost 300 runners and walkers participating in the 15k, 9k and 5k courses, dozens of youngsters in the free children’s 1km gallop, raising over $500 for the Relay for Life charity, and bringing many visitors to the town to boost the local economy. Winter Solstice race director,Melissa Francis said the scene was already set for another stellar event, to be held rain, hail or shine at the Ploughed Field in Portland. “This year’s event is sure to be even bigger and better with greater prizes, and a new electronic timing system for all runners and walkers in the 15k, 9k and 5k events. The Portland Runners Club has been very fortunate to receive generous sponsorship and grant funding, and we’ve also had excellent feedback and return registrations from participants in previous events. “We love seeing the faces of people crossing the finish line,

from seasoned runners and walkers who use this as part of their marathon training program to newcomers grinning ear to ear after completing their first event,” said Ms Francis. The winter solstice fun run is aimed at recreational runners and walkers, but there is also an element of competition for the fastest and fittest runners in the region, with the search now on for a new king and queen of the lighthouse in the feature 15k ‘Lighthouse to Lighthouse’ event. Ella Gill and Kristian Mccartney, winners of the 2013 and 2014 15k events, have moved interstate, leaving the course wide open for new champions. “Like last year, our fun run will have a carnival atmosphere at the finish line, with a great team of volunteers cheering participants on along the way. We can’t promise perfect weather or whale sightings from the finish line like last year, but we can ensure a great course with stunning views, and fun and active way to celebrate the shortest day of the year!” Said Ms Francis. Early bird registrations are discounted until June 12 and there are also discounts for family registrations. There will be a free jumping castle, face painting, and treats at the end of the free kids 1km run. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities will be ‘warmly welcomed’ at the June 21 event, with registrations available at www. 5 - 12 Tonne portlandrunnersclub. Glenelg Shire Council has been successful in securing grant funding to undertake a special project linking primary school students and seniors within the community. The Age-Friendly Innovations Grant is funded by the Department of Health & Human Services to enable a small number of Victorian councils to undertake innovative projects around promoting age-friendly communities. Glenelg Libraries submitted the funding application for a project called “Smart Art” late last year and has been successfully chosen as one of five councils to be funded for a project. The program will provide social connection and interaction between primary school-age children and seniors in the community utilising art as the conduit. The children and seniors will

works in pairs and groups to create artworks using devices and digital media applications. The finished works will be the basis for a public art exhibition to showcase the collaborative artworks to parents and family members of the participants as well as the wider community. This pilot project funding of $13,000 is supported by a minor in-kind contribution from council. The Department of Health and Human Services intends to film participants taking part in the project to feature on the Department’s website as an innovative program. The program will bring the children and seniors together at a range of community locations including the art centre, library, senior’s meetings facilities and schools.

Council upgrades its branding and online presence The new Mount Gambier City Council website was officially launched last month. “The website has had some major upgrades, including easier to use features and a more modern look,” said Mount Gambier City Council manager community services and development Barbara Cernovskis. The website is now available on all portable devices, mobile phones and tablets. The redevelopment of the website was due to the ongoing capacity to offer technical support to the council. With increasing limitations of the existing system, a review identified a requirement to upgrade the site to incorporate a new content management system. Some of the new features that the new website includes are the links on the home page. These links are the top trending and most looked at topics. These topics will be changed as the trends change. Since the website has been updated, the council have received a fair amount of feedback saying how much easier the new website is to use. People are enjoying how the site can be viewed from other devices not just a desktop, therefore making the website more popular. The websites views have increased greatly now that it is easier to use and accessible from more devices. The new website is trying to promote Mount Gambier as the place to be and the new design is about liveability and to promote Mount Gambier as a place that people want to be, where people want to live. The new website also includes a new and improved modern look, trying to evolve and promote the city in a way that the old website didn’t do. The photos that are used in the slideshow on the home page and other places throughout the website were taken by a range of different people from around Mount Gambier and others including SATC (South Australian Tourism Commission). With the redevelopment of the website a new logo design has been added as well. The council has had the same logo for three decades so it was decided that it needed an upgrade. It was decided that the logo needed an upgrade because of the limitations that came with the old one. Feedback suggested that that the old logo required a minimum size and application to be legible. The logo needed to be used for such a diverse range of signage, printed material and online media. The evolved brand acknowledges where the council has come from. The design works to modernise key aspects of the original, maintaining focus on the mountains, the colour of the Blue Lake and the green natural environment. The new design is more adaptable. The flexible nature of the brand removes limitations on how and where it can be used effectively.

LOCAL Grampians Peaks Trail journey begins After two years of intensive advocating to both the State and Federal Governments, Southern Grampians Shire Council is extremely pleased to see the completion of stage one of the Grampians Peaks Trail and the launch of the second stage of works. Construction of the Grampians Peaks Trail, which has been fully funded for completion, is now well underway with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews officially opening stage one of the trail at Halls Gap late last month. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr Peter Dark and CEO Richard Perry joined the Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford and Member for Lowan, Emma Kealy in the Grampians for the official opening. Southern Grampians Shire Council CEO Richard Perry said he was very pleased that Council’s program of advocacy had paid off. “This project is the result of strong advocacy. A consistent message and a cooperative approach between Southern Grampians Shire and neighbouring municipalities has been instrumental in getting this project off the ground. Council identified this project as a priority some time ago and the fact that it has been fully funded by both the State and Federal Governments to allow completion end–to-end is a fantastic result for all involved. The completion of the trail will be a great boost for both tourism and employment across our respective regions and it really is wonderful that so many people will now be able to enjoy what is one of the most beautiful locations anywhere in the world,” Mr Perry said. Once complete, the 144 km Grampians Peaks Trail will connect some of the Grampians’ most

Winter 2015

spectacular peaks, from the massive sandstone outcrops around Mt Zero in the north to Mount Sturgeon overlooking the Dunkeld township and the surrounding volcanic plains in the south. The full trail will provide walkers with an adventurous 13 day/12 night walk with hikers’ camps strategically located for overnight stays. The first stage is a one-way three day/two night loop walk from Halls Gap to a new Bugiga campsite, across Mt Rosea to the Borough Huts campground and returning to Halls Gap, covering a total of 33 kilometres. The next stage of the project involves planning to for the entire trail, with works on the North, Central and Southern ends expected to be completed by 2019. The trail is expected to create 225 jobs during and post construction and generate 75,000 visitor nights in the region per year. It is expected to become one to the premier walking tracks anywhere in the world and attract both national and international visitors. Mr Perry said that council has been undertaking planning around how to maximise the opportunities offered to the Southern Grampians Shire by the completion of the Peaks Trail. “Council has allocated funding in its 2015/16 draft budget to create a loop walk that links the Dunkeld town centre to the National Park and the Peaks Trail. We will be working with the State Government and other funding agencies to ensure that the loop walk is constructed, maximising the appeal and accessibility of the Grampians Peaks Trail. Tourism really is a cornerstone of the local economy for Dunkeld and the Greater Hamilton region. We are planning for the loop walk to take advantage of the enormous opportunities for tourism development based around the Grampians. While the loop walk will provide access the national park for hikers, it will also provide locals with a new experience. The opportunity to develop new tourism products and nature based experiences will hopefully drive visitation in the Southern section of the Grampians National Park and Council is obviously very keen for these opportunities to be realised,” Mr Perry said.

LOCAL EVENTS FORUM Event organisers, community groups and business owners across the Greater Hamilton region are invited to attend an Events Development Forum being run by the Southern Grampians Shire Council. The forum, being held at the Royal Mail hotel in Dunkeld on Friday 19 June, aims to assist those in the community who are planning events to deliver “the best events now and into the future”. The program includes a handson learning session facilitated by Patrick Moriarty from ‘Our Community’ on how to write a successful events plan and committee succession planning. Patrick will step attendees through the process of writing their event plan, so attendees are encouraged to bring their event details and ideas along on the day. Patrick will also provide 6 key tips on succession planning for event committee and volunteer groups, to ensure your event continues to grow and to prevent volunteer and committee burn out. The program also includes an interactive workshop from social media expert Mel Stewart where attendees will learn how to successfully promote events using Facebook. Council representative will also be on hand on the day to discuss Council’s community grants program and guide attendees through the funding application process. Tickets for this fantastic opportunity are $33, which includes morning tea and lunch, and can be booked now through the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre. For further information about the events development forum, please contact Council’s Acting Events and Marketing Development Officer Simone Logan on (03)5573 0239.

SBS ONE Knights (New Series) Friday, 8.30pm A fierce warrior-class emerges in medieval Europe around 1000 years ago: the knights. They live brutal lives, glorified by tales of chivalry and courtly love that have le us with a skewed idea of knighthood. In reality, it’s a world of freezing castles and violent ba les, where manners and gallantry are everything.
