COVER Building McDonald’s restaurants in Portland and Mount Gambier are perhaps most well known as employers of local young people but what many underestimate is the career opportunities a job at McDonald’s provides. Two locals who have seen first hand the benefit of a career with McDonald’s are Todd Knight and Alistair Coonan. Portland store manager Todd said that McDonald’s had provided both he and Mount Gambier store manager Alistair with training and skills to allow them to embark on long term careers. “It’s certainly
a career path
something people underestimate about McDonald’s,” Alistair said. “The company has a great reputation as an employer of young people but a lot of people don’t understand the long term career opportunities and the quality of training McDonald’s provides.” He said Todd and he had both completed Advanced Diplomas in Retail Management, as well as a number of other management courses. “For me, one of the most exciting things about my role as store manager is helping others pursue a career they are passionate about and giving the same opportunity that
Todd and I have had at McDonald’s,” Alistair said. “Anyone interested in a long term career in hospitality or retail would certainly be wise to consider a position with Macca’s. The training and development opportunities Todd and I have been given through our time with McDonald’s has given us the confidence to take on and manage a restaurant of our own.” The opening of the new McDonald’s restaurant in Portland has seen the creation of a number of new career opportunities. Todd said a crew position at McDonald’s was not just a ‘job’ but could provide a stepping stone towards a long term career. “We have a number of positions currently available in the Portland restaurant for locals to pursue a career they are passionate about,” he said. “McDonald’s provides unmatched
opportunity for people to learn skills that they can apply throughout their working lives.” Todd previously completed a Degree in Graphic Design and Communication in Melbourne and had his own graphic design business prior to returning to McDonald’s and completing his Advanced Diploma In
Retail Management. “Seeing so many opportunities in McDonald’s daily it was inevitable I would return to McDonald to work.” he said. “I worked at McDonald’s whilst at university.” Nationally, McDonald’s invests more than $40million annually on training crew, managers and corporate
employees, offering nationally accredited traineeships and qualifications. The McDonald’s restaurants in Portland and Mount Gambier are always interested in hearing from locals pursuing casual, part time or full time work. To find out more about a career at McDonald’s visit http:

Advertorial I ODYSSEY VEIN CLINIC
Non-surgical leg vein treatment and cosmetic injectables
Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey established their business Odyssey Vein Clinic to offer non surgical treatment of larger or varicose veins of the legs. They have been established in Mount Gambier for three years now and visit approximately every four weeks “Now Is an ideal time to tackle your leg veins,” said Dr. Nolan. “The weather is cooling down and treatment now allows plenty of time for the veins to heal before next summer.” Dr. Nolan has 14 years experience treating
varicose veins non surgically with a technique called ultra-sound guided sclerotherapy. This technique involves injecting the veins instead of stripping them – it takes about 45 minutes and involves no anaesthetic, surgery, or time off work. “We offer a consult, scan, and treatment all on the same day which minimises travelling time,” Dr Nolan said. “It also means that patients don’t have to travel to Melbourne or Adelaide for treatment.” Odyssey also offers paralysing injections for wrinkles and dermal fillers for facial lines and
folds. “We have had a terrific response to the cosmetic side of the business—the fact that we visit monthly and can see our cosmetic patients at short notice is a big plus,” Dr Nolan said. No GP referral is required. For more information visit www.odysseyveinclinic. com.au or contact Kerryn on 0403 965 548
COLLECTED STUPIDITY Venting by Robbie Tansel I won’t lie to you all. I’m in a foul mood at the moment. I won’t bore you with too many of my troubles but let’s just say that I’m having a lot of trouble finding gypsies interested in buying a painful two year old. Anyway some people make themselves feel better by adopting a positive attitude. Not me though; I prefer to grizzle, whinge and bring everyone else down to my level. Let me start by saying there aren’t many things I despise more than watching someone’s video of the time they went skydiving. I know it’s not something that most of us encounter all that often but it’s a memorably atrocious thing to suffer through. I’m sure that it’s enjoyable for the participant and it’s quite likely I’d enjoy
it myself, but I have no interest in watching you or anyone else do it. I don’t enjoy the bit where they show you strapped to the expert who always looks like he should be strapped into a strait jacket, not a parachute with the responsibility of getting you safely to the ground. I don’t enjoy the bit where I see you sitting in the aeroplane about to jump. I don’t enjoy seeing your cheeks flapping about like a dog with its head out the window as you plummet to the ground. I don’t enjoy you screaming, “Whooooo” as you experience the exhilaration of jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane. I have no interest in your skydiving video. Watching someone else’s skydiving video is like hearing about their dreams. Or

looking at photos of their holiday. Or talking to accountants. Or when the Jehovah’s Witness arrive at your door. Or reality television. Or going to a Celine Dion concert. Or triangle solos. Or Volvos. Or ties. Or a beach holiday in Afghanistan. Or interpretive dance. Or rain on your wedding day. Or traffic jams when you’re already late. Or a free ride when you’ve already paid. No wait, that’s ironic isn’t it. Or new taxes. Or 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife. No that’s still ironic isn’t it. Or like reading the Advertiser. Or having a cup of tea without sugar. Anyway, I think you get the point. I don’t want to watch your skydiving video. I hope you had fun. Actually no I don’t. I don’t even care whether you had fun or not. I am a fundamentally selfish person and I don’t care about you or your miserable life. It feels better now that I’ve said it. What made you think we’d

enjoy your skydiving video anyway? Let’s be honest. You can call it skydiving or an extreme sport as much as you want, but at the end of the day it’s just falling. That’s all you’re doing: falling. Not only that, you have to get someone else to help you fall. I’d love to help you fall. I blame those GoPro cameras. I’d quite like one myself to be honest but if it meant I didn’t have to watch falling videos I’d be prepared to see them outlawed. The one exception to my skydiving video disgust would be if you fell, the chute failed to deploy, you plunged to the ground and somehow survived. I’ll watch that. Or if while you were falling a migrating duck thudded into your cranium. Then you might have something. I’m glad I’ve got that all off my chest. If you think I’m selfish and you wish I’d skydive minus a parachute, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

A former colleague, Melissa is no stranger to the Tailor Made Travel client base, working to the same philosophies as the rest of the team and making sure she does everything in her power to plan your perfect holiday. Tailor Made Travel has also become an associate member of the helloworld travel group, which has given them even greater buying power, benefitting clients with great deals

LOCAL Locals The Collins Court Butchers & J W Lamond Contracting 75 Target State qualifying shoot was well attended with 93 shooters competing in the locally sponsored event. Shooters came from across the State to compete and take the opportunity to see the targets in readiness for the State Titles to be
on target for State selction held at Burrungle Park in September. Many of the local shooters competed well and must in contention for selection in the State Teams. Regular State team members Jeremy Kent, Ron Rook and Liam Bottomley produced good scores while State selectors would be keeping a close eye on locals Jamie

Jeremy shot three faultless rounds of 25/25. Others who enjoyed perfect scores of 25/25 were Chris Wright, who also got plenty of practice in Argentina on holiday with Kent, and John Monaghan. LOCAL Food
& wine festival secures headline act
Sydney based chef and food media personality, Miguel Maestre will headline the Fork and Cork program scheduled to be held on the weekend of February 28 and March 1, 2015, in Mount Gambier’s Garden Square. Following the outstanding success and public support for the inaugural event, the organising committee of the Fork and Cork, Mount Gambier Food and Wine Festival have last Friday announced that the event will be held again next year, with Spanish chef Miguel Maestre presenting workshops and assisting with a celebration feast. Chairman Terry Strickland confirmed last Friday that the committee had engaged Miguel Maestre, whose initial Sydney establishment El Toro Loco (The Crazy Bull), set him on a train of successful food industry experiences. Miguel now runs his own business, offering a Personal Chef experience creating bespoke dining experiences for people wanting to entertain at home. “We were overwhelmed by the positive response to our inaugural event and in particular the impact that our celebrity chef Justine Schofield had on those who attended her demonstrations and met her at the dinner,” Mr. Strickland said. “For this reason we
were determined to find another personality who would totally engage with our patrons and having seen Miguel (pictured above) in action, a number of us were very keen to gain his services next year.” Mr. Strickland
indicated that the 2015 event will follow the same basic pattern as the initial event with food and wine exhibitors, wine, craft beer, cider and food workshops. “The significant differences are that we have acted on the feedback provided by
participants to the 2014 event and will run into the twilight on the Saturday evening and will stage a celebration lunch on the Sunday instead of the dinner on the Saturday evening,” Mr. Strickland said.
LOCAL Car
donation helps SEAWL
Carlin & Gazzard has thrown the South East Animal Welfare League a lifeline, providing the animal rescue organisation with a much needed vehicle. The car, which is primarily used to transport adopted pets to the vets for their final check up and delivery, was handed over last Monday by dealer principal Ken Gazzard and sales consultant Wendy Webster. The vehicle will also assist with kitty litter and food pick ups. The league’s cattery is
sadly at capacity at the moment with 18 cats in residence. “We continue to get kittens and sadly there are some kittens that have grown into adults while in our care,” league volunteer Olivia Harrison said. The dog numbers are the lowest they have been in some time with 13 taking refuge at the shelter. “It does ebb and flow a little,” Olivia said. The South East Animal Welfare is always looking for volunteers. “If you can spare a couple of hours we would love
to hear from you,” Olivia said. “It seems to be quite transient as we have a lot of job seekers that come and help and when they find employment, they leave.” The league is open from 9-11am and 4-5pm on weekdays and 9am-12noon on weekends. Anyone interested in assisting the league can contact them on (08)8723 9133. Above - Wendy Webster, Ken Gazzard and SEAWL volunteer Natalie Zwar (in car).

ADVERTORIAL Truck Yes, its that time of year again. By the time this goes to print we will have received four trucks loads of bare rooted fruit trees and ornamental trees for the start of what is one of the busiest times of the year at Gardenarium and The Limestone Coast Group. In addition we will have the first few thousand roses in from the paddock, to start processing orders for our local and interstate customers. If you have roses ordered with us and have not heard from us this means your order is not yet ready for collection. Do not panic if you have not heard from us as it takes many weeks/months to compile all of the orders, with many cases just waiting for that last elusive one to come in to complete the order! Hundreds of standard roses have been dug a little earlier than normal due to the dry conditions which has helped
loads of dormant, bare rooted roses and trees galore
no end getting the roses dug this year from the fields, so if you haven’t yet thought about these to order, you can just call in and most will be available, bearing in mind more stock is still to come in from suppliers of varieties that we do not grow ourselves. Many of the eagerly awaited 2014 new releases, including the Golden Jubilee rose, Gee Whizz - which is exactly what you will say when you smell the perfume from this amazing variety are in the sales area now, so be quick to avoid missing out on these. The third in the series of roses to commemorate the Black Saturday Bush Fires, Firestar Spirit is also in store, a rich red this time with proceeds to the CFA. Many more of the new varieties will filter in as the weeks
go on, so ordering now is important as we are often completely sold out before we even bring them in from the field/suppliers. If you haven’t already ordered Daniel Morcombe Rose then be quick as we are nearly sold out. This season sees the release of a whole host of new fruit trees, mainly in the dwarf varieties that have become so sought after. With gardens decreasing in size, the fact that dwarf trees bare as much if not more than their full sized counterparts and their use in pots and planters means now there is literally no variety that isn’t available in dwarf. Many people have been waiting for popular varieties of old favourites and this year there are many. The dwarf nectarine Fantasia and ever popular Goldmine will be released as well as dwarf Anzac Peach and Flat Peach Angel in dwarf. Add to this the two blood plums, Satsuma and Mariposa that were in such demand last year many missed out, but be assured we have good stocks for this season as well as Santa Rosa another great Japanese plum. Four new dwarf apples will also be released - Dwarf Golden Delicious, Dwarf Fuji, Dwarf Gala and Dwarf
Granny Smith as well as the wonderfully good for you Monty’s Surprise with the highest amount of antioxidants and flavonoids of any apple in the world - certainly reinforces that an apple a day really does keep the doctor away. The humble Almond hasn’t been left out either with a new dwarf self-pollinating variety too, that is ideal for pots or small gardens. For many, many years we have been asked by customers if such as a thing as a curl leaf free peach or nectarine is available, and, of course, we have had to say “they are probably working on it.” Well, at last we can announce they are here. We had an introductory batch earlier in the season and they walked out the door. The new bare rooted ones will be in by the time this article is read, so hurry in and order one before they all disappear. All of the details for all of the above are on our comprehensive website www.gardenarium.com.au and we have current catalogues in store to help with your choosing. Most of our other fruit trees are also in store now with an Orchard Starter fruit tree pack of any four fruit trees* for $89.95, so a great economical way to kick
off your planting or top up with some fresh new trees. Early bird specials are running now on a huge range of trees and also early orders of ornamental trees will be given and upgrade to a larger sized tree. Early bird specials include the ever popular Acer (maple) Crimson Sentry with its stunning glossy deep purple, almost black leaves in summer and being narrow is ideal for boundary screening in sub urban situations as well as driveways and avenue plantings, these are on special for $36.50. Prunus Oakville Crimson Spire is a variety of flowering plum with purple foliage and pink flowers turning to white. Also a great focal point in a lawn or screening and driveway tree. Mop top catalpas and maples are also on a great special but only in limited numbers so hurry in for those also. The boss has gone mad and put huge reductions on ornamental pears in several varieties, plane trees, golden and claret ash, plus a few others, so order now or come in to grab these great bargains. (see advert facing page). Early bird specials run until June 14, unless sold out prior. The Autumn foliage has hung on the trees well this
autumn due to the lack of wind and mild autumn weather so now is still a great time to look at these in all their glory and benefit from the 25-50% off reductions across all of our Advanced trees. The Liquidambars and Lipstick maples are looking great and we have specials on them from $27-$33 which would have to be the lowest price we have ever been able to offer in all the years we have been in business. The Autumn colours on the Crepe Myrtles, Crab Apples, Chinese Tallow woods is also looking great, so make the most of this lovely rain to do some planting. There are only a few new release ornamental trees for 2014 and the standout would have to
be the new columnar Ornamental pear, that is very similar to and older variety called Capital but instead has more stunning Appleblossom flowers in spring, same narrow growth habit and magnificent Autumn colour. Crab Apple Crimson Knight is a stunning new variety with purple foliage, possibly one of the most stunning purple leafed crab apples and will certainly give the flowering cherries and plums with purple foliage a run for their money. If you haven’t got your head around your bare root requirements for this winter season, now is the time as they are here. Calum Haygarth

Advertorial I DAIRY SA
LOCALS PART OF THE MCG FIELD OF WOMEN
Looking to the future International dairy identity Gary Helou will headline SA’s premier dairy conference this June. In conversation with Steve Spencer from Fresh Agenda, Helou (pictured) will shed light on the Global dairy story of today and how local farms might adapt to be strong in the future. On the back of Murray Goulburns take-over bid of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and their bold moves for capital restructure, the conference will hear how this leader views the future of the nation’s dairy industry and how the industry as a whole can be best equipped to be strong going forward. Mr Helou was selected as a innovative industry leader and champion of change. DairySA chair James Mann said the local organising committee had worked hard to get a thought provoking key topic for this year’s event. “We’ve
come out of one of the toughest year’s yet in dairying,” Mr Mann said. “The committee focused on the fact that most farms want to look forward on how they can continue to build a resilient business into the future.” The DairySA Innovation Day: From Global to Local program includes insights into the Australian dairy industry’s role in the Food Bowl to Asia. Steve Spencer will focus on sharing with the audience the relevance of “Food Bowl” phenomena to the industry and what influence people at farm level can have on contributing to a prosperous industry. Another highlight of the event will be a session and information on the The Scott Milktech Robotic Arm system from New Zealand. The Robotic Arm is a completely automated cupping system that can be retrofitted to existing rotary dairy sheds with minimal disruption. “As usual the
DairySA Innovation Day will have something for everyone with by showcasing a wide range of innovations and topics that sit high on the dairy farming agenda,” Mr mann said. These include milking machine technologies, mastitis research and innovation and herd genomics. The event rounds off with the usual favourites including the Top Paddock post conference light graze and drinks and the Legendairy Dinner hosted by the SA Young Dairy Network. The DairySA Innovation Day: From Global to Local will be held June 18, at The Barn Palais, Mount Gambier.

Gambier Coachlines organised a bus trip on Saturday, May 10, for local people who wanted to support and attend the 2014 field of women at the MCG. The event was an overwhelming experience for many as the MCG took on the shape and colour of the pink lady. Women, men and children wore pink ponchos onto the field to represent the 15,000 people who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The proceeds from the purchase of the poncho packs went directly to the Breast Cancer Network Australia so that they can continue their current role of breast cancer awareness and supporting people on their breast cancer journey. The ocal contingent were honoured to be involved in this moving event on the AFL calendar.

LOCAL Merna
the super veteran
Mount Gambier & District RSL Bowling Club stalwart and current division one pennant player Merna Whitehead has been awarded a super veterans badge. Merna joined the club in the 1983=84 season and took on umpiring and coaching in only her second season. Merna
has been involved in catering, promotions, social even planning and game committees and is the region’s publicity officer. It is safe to say there is probably not a job in the Lower South East bowling community that Merna (pictured above) hasn’t undertaken. From planning quiz nights to choreographing the end of season celebrations, from executive roles on the administration committee to a pennant selector, Merna has seen and done it all. She has been an advocate of bowls for the younger generation through roles with SAPSASA competitions and primary school programs. Merna was on the executive of the LSEWBA for four years and served as president and along with Brian Cooper was instrumental in the amalgamation of the Lower South East Bowls Association. It hasn’t all been behind the scenes for Merna – she has been a star out on the greens as well. She has been club singles champion five times, pairs champion seven times; triples titleholder three times and champion of champion triples twice and fours champion six times. Merna has been part of recent country carnival winning fours combinations and finished third in the State pairs.
Advertorial I KEVIN PAISLEY FASHION EYEWEAR
Seven bad habits that are aging your eyes Are you a night owl, fast food lover or sun worshipper? Chances are you’re prematurely aging your eyes - inside and out. Here’s how... Rubbing Your Eyes The skin around your eyes is one of the first areas on your face to show signs of aging. Rubbing your eyes can break tiny blood vessels under the skin’s surface and cause dark circles and puffy eyes, as well as premature crow’s feet and drooping eyelids. Forgetting Your Sunglasses Exposing your eyes to the sun’s harmful UV rays is a guaranteed way to prematurely age and damage your eyes and eyelids. Extended sun exposure leads to: sunburn of the front surface of the eye (photokeratitis); cataracts; macular degeneration; pinguecula and pterygium ; and even cancer of the eyelid. Make sure you wear sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays rays whenever you’re outdoors — even on overcast days. Smoking Smoking harms just about every organ in your body — including your eyes. Research has
linked cigarette smoking to sight-threatening eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration and dry eyes. In fact, smokers are up to four times more likely to go blind, compared with non-smokers. The good news is that quitting smoking, no matter what your age, can reduce your risk of developing a serious eye condition. Eating Poorly Are you eating too much fast food and not enough fruits and vegetables? Then you’re probably not getting the necessary vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids for optimum eye health. A diet rich in leafy greens, colourful fruit and vegetables, and wild-caught fish such as salmon can help prevent or manage many age-related eye diseases. Eye vitamins and other supplements can help fill in nutritional gaps, but eating a healthful diet, exercising daily and watching your waistline are more effective ways to keep your eyes in top shape Not Getting Enough Quality Shut-Eye It’s called beauty sleep for a reason: not enough sleep can accelerate aging, and your eyes often are the first to suffer! In addition to red, bloodshot eyes, lack of sleep also causes dark
circles under the eyes, eye twitching, dry eyes and blurry vision. Not Drinking Enough Water Not getting the recommended eight glasses of water a day and eating a high-sodium diet can cause your body to dehydrate and in turn not produce enough tears to keep your eyes moist and properly nourished. Eye-related symptoms of dehydration include dryness, redness and puffy eyelids. Not Seeing Your Optometrist Regular eye exams can detect vision problems, eye diseases and general health problems before you’re aware problems exist. Routine exams are especially important because certain sightthreatening diseases such as glaucoma often have no warning signs until there is a permanent, irreversible loss of vision. Inform your eye doctor of your family’s eye health history to help determine if you have a high risk for a particular eye disease or condition. If you don’t already, start scheduling regular eye exams for you and your family — it just might add years of healthy vision to your lives
local story A valuable opportunity to speak with the Geotechnical Engineer in charge of the Nuns Beach landslip risk assessment will be provided to the community next week (Thursday 5 June), in the next of a series of risk-mitigating steps being undertaken by Glenelg Shire Council. A marquee will be set up on the Ploughed Field, adjacent to the high-risk area, with A.S. Miner Geotechnical (ASMG) Consultant, Anthony Miner, to give a first-hand explanation and walk-through of the issues associated with this location. Portland experienced heavy and prolonged periods of rainfall during 2013, corresponding with significant landslide activity on the section of coast between Nuns Beach and Anderson Point in Portland. As a result, a number of paths and tracks were impacted and concerns for public safety were expressed. Mayor Cr John Northcott said this opportunity to receive expert opinion and advice about this location was open to everyone, including residents, regular tourists, local business owners and other stakeholders. “Nuns Beach is a popular asset for local residents and visitors to Portland, supporting a range of activities including walking, jogging and beach/ water-based pursuits,” he said. “This area has been of major concern since the rainfall last winter, and users of this area need to realise just how dangerous it is – if not for their own safety, then for the safety of others who may follow their actions.” The community information day follows council’s installation of 19 new signs last week, on both the beach and the cliff top between the Anderson Point Steps and the Ploughed Field. Prior to this, considerable work was done by Council to relocate the fence-line and walking path behind the Portland Bay Holiday Park to ensure walkers weren’t risking their lives on the unstable area. A number of short walking inspections of the Nuns Beach area will be conducted by ASMG next Thursday and people are welcome to attend one of these at the following times: • 10:00 am • 12:00 pm • 2:00 pm Alternatively, Mr Miner will be available for individual consultation or questions throughout the day between 10am and 4pm. Should you wish to attend one of the above sessions or arrange an individual consultation contact Assets and Infrastructure Acting Senior Administration Officer Paige Kliese on 5522 2520 or pklie se@glenelg.vic.gov.au.

Advertorial I THE HYPNOTIC CENTRE
Weight loss with a difference The Virtual Gastric Band program is a hypnotic program which is conducted over four weekly sessions. In the first session the participant believes they have undergone bariatric surgery to reduce the stomach to the size of a golf ball. This is followed by three further sessions which deal with the psychological triggers to eating. The hypnotherapy is like ‘flicking a switch in the brain’, turning off food cravings and eating only much smaller amounts. It’s not a diet, and there is nothing magical or mystical about hypnotherapy, instead it is a method that enables a person to help themselves. The sessions are conducted on a one to one basis and are personalised for the individual. The four sessions are designed to bring about a permanent change in a person’s eating habits. It creates new habits to get them where they want to be

and to enable them to remain there. The program also includes personalised support CDs. The CDs are designed to reinforce the new messages that will bring about a permanent change in eating behaviour. The progress of the first 350 people who completed all four sessions of the Virtual Gastric Band program has been documented. RESULTS TO DATE Of those 350 people who completed all four 4 sessions of the program, 345 people or 98.5% achieved a positive result. The total combined weight loss at the completion of the program was an impressive 1,680 kilos, and the total number of
centimetres lost was a remarkable 6,150 cm. That equates to an average weight loss of 4.79 kg per person and an average loss of 16cm per person, after just 4 weeks. Of course, these figures are just average figures. Some people lost more than the average and some people lost less than the average. The weight loss journey has commenced for these people and no doubt their weight loss will continue as The Virtual Gastric Band continues to work for them. For more information please call 1300 116 117 or visit www.hypnotic weightloss.com.au.
HYPNOSIS The Virtual Gastric Band
The Virtual Gastric Band is a remarkable weight loss program. We use hypnosis to condition the sub-conscious mind into believing that a band has been placed around the top of the stomach in order to create a small pouch, thus reducing the amount of food one needs in order to feel full. The Virtual Gastric Band is for people who want to lose weight, but don’t want to go through a physical operation. The Virtual Gastric Band is available at a fraction of the cost and has comparable results.
THE VIRTUAL GASTRIC BAND PROGRAM WILL BE RUN IN MOUNT GAMBIER AND IN NARACOORTE JUNE/JULY 2014

A proposed basement carpark has been removed from the final Portland Civic Precinct Master Plan, after Council Officers recommended the change prior to last week’s May Council Meeting. The final Portland Civic Precinct Master Plan was adopted at the meeting, with a total of 10 written submissions, as well as verbal feedback considered in its preparation. It was also decided to retain the Vietnam War Memorial, including plaque and peace garden, in its current location, but with a more significant profile, after external consultants Michael Smith and Associates met with community members during a three day Portland drop-in event in February. The final Plan includes a respectfully designed, purpose built Natural Resource Annexe to the
north-west (rear) of History House, which is envisaged to highlight the coastal environment, geothermal energy, wind energy and the region’s lava flows. It was acknowledged that the Drill Hall with climate control and protection measures would be suitable for the bulk of the Cultural Collection and that the Portland Family History Group would take over the entire internal space within History House when the Cultural Collection was moved. Cr John Northcott said he was confident that the final Plan had taken into account the community’s concerns, while still remaining viable. “We wanted to ensure we gave everyone the opportunity to have a say and held extensive community consultation to provide this chance,” he said. “The draft plans and study report were placed on display at Council’s three Customer Service Centres and the Portland Library from Friday 29 November to Friday 21 February 2014. “They were also accessible from Council’s website and a project bulletin was distributed to all user groups and stakeholders including property owners and residents of the Civic Precinct and surrounding area. “The opportunity was then provided for the community and stakeholders to meet with the consultant team during a three day drop-in event in Portland.” The Portland Civic Precinct Master Plan project has been funded by Regional Development Victoria’s Putting Locals First Program, with a co-contribution from Council’s Grants Budget. It is intended that any outcomes that require an additional budget allocation will be referred to the Council budget process for consideration and external grant opportunities will be fully explored.
ORCHESTRA READY TO LAUNCH SECOND SEASON
LOCAL Portland
The Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra has more than 70 instrumentalists playing in its various sections this year and will present its 2014 program in Naracoorte on June 28 and Mount Gambier on June 29. It includes highly experienced orchestral players (ex Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland Symphony orchestras), professional music teachers, their senior students and talented amateurs. It was formed last year and its first concert at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre resulted in a Mount Gambier City Community Event Of The Year award, an appointment as Orchestra-In-Residence at the Helpmann Theatre for 2014 and a a Country Arts SA commission for a new work for the orchestra’s 2014 season. Conductor Angus Christie, trained in Australia and Vienna before working professionally in Europe, heads a similar orchestra in Hamilton. Composer Dr Chris Waite has written the commissioned work for the specific make-up of the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra and this year orchestra’s program features an expanded program. The 2014 performance schedule includes three highly virtuosic performers in works for soloist and orchestra. Soprano Elspeth Bawden will sing a Handel aria and a music theatre piece, guitarist Mike Walsh will perform a Vivaldi concerto and trumpeter Jordan Mansell will play a Handel suite. The Naracoorte Singers, led by Erika Vickery, will perform two items with full orchestral accompaniment. They are the popular contemporary choral pieces Adiemus and Water Under Snow Is Weary. Composers whose works are included in the 2014 season include Handel, Vivaldi, Rimsky-Korsakov, Sibelius, Vaughan-Williams, Berlioz and Camille Saint-Saens. Tickets for the Naracoorte concert are available at the Naracoorte Visitor Information Centre, while the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre concert tickets can be booked online at the theatre website.
Glenelg Shire Council has been included in one of Australia’s most iconic and popular tourist attractions - the Great Ocean Road - as part of the Great Southern Touring Route tourism initiative. Listed on the Great Southern Touring Route website under the heading ‘12 Apostles and Great Ocean Road’, Portland has been highlighted for its habitation of the endangered Blue Whales, which can be observed off the coast from November to May. While the Great Ocean Road - the world’s largest war memorial and dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I - is formally the stretch of road along the south-eastern coast between Torquay and Allansford, the addition and marketing of Glenelg Shire as part of this tourist location was included in the Great South Coast Regional Growth Plan. It was thought that this initiative would provide opportunity to highlight the breathtaking scenery of the three bays along Portland’s coastal stretch through to the South Australian border as well as support economic and population growth for the region. The Great South Coast Regional Growth Plan covers the municipalities of Corangamite, Glenelg, Moyne, Southern Grampians and Warrnambool and

was completed at the start of 2014 to provide a regional approach to land use planning in the Great South Coast region. It also identifies that infrastructure, services and workforce will be needed to harness the potential and benefits of growth. Glenelg shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said Portland often missed the benefits of the high tourist traffic travelling the official Great Ocean Road due to its location just past the official historic end-point and that this linkage provided a chance to promote the route right through to the SA border. “Tourism routes and infrastructure should extend tourism opportunities throughout the region and link attractions in and beyond the region, including west to Penola/Coonawarra, north to the northern Grampians, and east to Ballarat, Greater Geelong and Melbourne,” he said. “Development should be based primarily around the region’s environmental and cultural heritage assets, with a focus on continued enhancement of centres along the Great Ocean Road and Great Southern Touring Route. “Planning policy should recognise and support the role of tourism in the region’s economic development and diversification, while sustainably managing environmental and heritage assets.” This Great South Coast Regional Growth Plan was prepared through a partnership between the State Government and regional councils, including input by the Colac Otway Shire, which adjoins the Great South Coast region to the east. Its development involved research and identification of growth issues, regional workshops and analysis of information provided by all partners in the process.
LARGE DONATION KICKSTARTS HOSPITAL APPEAL A $10,000 donation has kick-started a local fund-raising appeal for Portland District Health. PDH has launched an end of financial year fund-raising campaign to encourage the local community to support their local hospital. The $10,000 donation by a local person who wished to remain anonymous has been a terrific start to the campaign which will run during June. The person gave the money because of the “wonderful care” received at PDH. “They wanted to give something back to the hospital, which is much appreciated,” PDH CEO Chris Giles said. From the donation PDH has purchased an electric examination bed for the Specialist Centre and a video laryngoscope which is a camera guided intubation particularly for difficult intubations. This piece of equipment is already being used in theatre. This year is the first time PDH has promoted an end of financial year fund-raising campaign. Ms Giles said most hospitals looked to their local community to assist in the purchase of new equipment. “A lot of public hospitals from the Royal Children’s to regional hospitals have big appeals and we have decided to give district residents an opportunity to contribute to PDH,” Ms Giles said. “Medical equipment and technology moves forward at such a pace that it is difficult to keep up. By running a community appeal we are encouraging local residents to consider PDH for donations that can assist in a variety of ways.” All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Donations can be left at main reception or posted to Portland District Health, Bentinck Street, Portland, Vic., 3305 People wishing to support PDH can also contact community engagement officer Carolyn Malseed on (03)5522 1182.

to dig deep for children’s charity
Radio 5SE is excited to announce the start of its annual charity initiative, Give Me 5 for Kids, which has raised thousands of dollars for the children’s ward at the Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte and Penola hospitals. This year, Radio 5SE will aim to raise its highest funds ever, which last year contributed to Give Me 5 for Kids incredible national tally of almost $2.5 million. Community members are being urged to listen to Radio 5SE for details on how they can become involved in and support this important cause. Radio 5SE’s involvement in the Give Me 5 for Kids fundraiser is part of parent company Southern Cross Austereo’s (SCA) campaign, which launched in the mid 90s as a simple coin drive. Since then, the campaign has raised more than $12 million nationally, and utilises SCA’s network
of 36 regional radio markets and eight television markets to drive donations. It is rolled out in June each year. Radio 5SE morning breakfast announcer Jason Scheidl said Give Me 5 for Kids was a great fundraiser to raise money for the kids wards of our local hospitals. “All the money we raise is thanks to the generous support of the community and their various fundraising events,” Jason said. “Thanks to their support, Give Me 5 for Kids continues to grow each and every year”. Southern Cross Austereo CEO Rhys Holleran said the essence of what SCA does as a broadcaster was local content, and GM54K is all about local communities. “So it’s a perfect fit for our company,” he said. “Last year, we raised close to 2.5 million dollars, and all of that money went to hospitals in the communities we serve. WELCOME to our CITI. We at Safety Ba6 Training and Development are committed to the ongoing safety and welfare of our client’s personnel and environment. But what about those family members who do not benefit from skills acquired in the workplace. We maintain our first aid skills but often forget family members who care for our loved ones while we are at work. As an integral component of our ongoing commitment to you and value added service we wish to extend a warm welcome to your nominated family member or friend to visit our CITI. For each person who completes an accredited Apply First Aid or Apply Advanced First Aid training course with Safety Ba6 we offer a complimentary *CPR course to one family member or friend to ensure our potentially lifesaving skills are shared. “I gave my CPR session to my son’s footy coach. Great to know he is ready and prepared to provide emergency care.” Ian, Factory employee and father. “I am always ready at work to perform CPR if needed, but always wondered what would happen if my husband needed to help our kids. Safety Ba6 has the solution at their CITI.” Denise, Production Supervisor and mum.

VACC has confirmed Minister for Manufacturing, Ports and Major Projects, David Hodgett, will attend the 2014 VACC Automotive Design Awards, at Deakin Edge, Federation Square. The Minister will present the Awards at the Presentation Ceremony on 26 June and make an address. “I thoroughly enjoyed attending last year’s VACC Automotive Design Awards and look forward to presenting the Awards to the 2014 student entrants,” Minister Hodgett said. “Local vehicle manufacturers may have announced the end of their car production lines in Victoria, but the automotive design industry remains strong. Victoria is Australia’s Centre of Excellence for automotive design with a pool of highly skilled, and well trained, professionals. This Government continues to promote the automotive industry and the VACC Automotive Design Awards is an important opportunity

to promote automotive design as a career,” said Minister Hodgett (pictured above with Premier Dr Denis Napthine). The VACC Automotive Design Awards is open to all secondary and tertiary students in Victoria. Tasked simply with designing a road vehicle, capable of transporting at least one person, students are encouraged to harness their imagination and passion to deliver tomorrow’s transport solutions. 2006 by VACC, the peak automotive industry body in Victoria will this year donate $18,000 total prize money to winning students, universities and schools. “The prize money is significant, but more importantly, the competition provides students with education opportunities to transition from school to university, and ultimately into employment. The Awards night also provides opportunities for students,

parents and teachers to meet professional designers and receive advice and feedback from our Judging Panel, comprising the Heads of Design from Ford, GM Holden and Toyota,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase, said. “We look forward to Minister Hodgett’s participation at our awards night and appreciate the Victorian Government’s ongoing support for the automotive design industry,” Mr Purchase said.
