COVER Experience Dion Kain has been in the transport industry for more than 25 years and can already stake a claim to running a successful business of his own for the past decade. He started in the industry as part of the family business business in 1986, carting lobster from the ports to the Millicent Safcol factory, and then moving onto carting livestock, wool and general freight until 2002. That was when Dion decided to become an owner/operator of his own business, setting up Kain Transport. “I bought my first truck and

and family values at heart of business

carted logs for the foresty industry, eventually expanding the business and buying more trucks,” Dion said. That has led to an expansion on his customer base with the dairy industry now one of his biggest clients. Agribusiness is, in fact, now the focus of Kain Transport, sourcing and delivering hay products and grain throughout the region. Kain Transport services the Upper and Lower South East and through to South West Victoria, striving to provide an efficient and reliable service, that is also competitively priced. The Kain Transport

team includes Dion, as well as his two long standing drivers, Jeff Taylor and Steve Gibbs. Their experience means Kain Transport can provide a smoothly run operation every time, with a stand by team also at the ready, when assistance is needed. Dion is also actively involved with the community, providing trailers for use in both the Mount Gambier and Millicent Christmas Parades, trailers for seating at the Millicent Show, and he’s even helped local motocross freestyler Josh Burdon with his extreme tricks, lining up a selection of his trucks a few years ago so Josh could perform

a stunt jumping over the impressive obstacles. Family is integral to Dion and their property on the outskirts of Millicent, which doubles as a home and depot, is the family common place, where his sons ride bikes, just as Dion did when he was a youngster and they enjoy participating at race meets on the weekends. As is so often the case, there is at least one woman behind the man in this success story and Dion’s wife, Jan and Linda McRoberts in accounts, keep the Kain Transport office ticking along smoothly. Please call Dion (pictured) today on 0428 854 953 to discuss your stockfeed requirements.

The team at Lifestyle1 would like to wish all their clients and readers a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. The office willl be closed from December 19 until it re-opens on January 6. Phone

January 9 Coonawarra Vignerons Cup - Penola Racecourse - From 9.30am The Coonawarra Vignerons Cup ranks as one of the best of South Australia’s country race meetings with more than 3000 visitors each year heading to the Picturesque Penola Racecourse. It will be the 33rd running of the cup with food and wine as much a part of the action as the fashion and the racing. As the sponsor of the cup, the Coonawarra Vignerons Association hosts around 700 guests in its marquee with Coonawarra wine, wonderful cuisine and plenty of fun and fundraising on offer – the vignerons always support a local cause with money raised from the social event of the season. Frock up for Fashions on the Field, place a bid on the impressive Imperials or a wager in the Calcutta and meet some of the faces behind the iconic Coonawarra wines.

Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier awards a karate scholarship each year through a Mount Gambier High schools scholarship program. This year there were five applications, all from ESL (English as a Second Language) students and were all so worthy that head coach Geoff Rohde offered all five students a scholarship. These recipients are some of the most polite and respectful students that he has had the pleasure to teach and be associated with. “They have all graded within our system and have shown great commitment and capability,” Rohde said. Each student receiving a scholarship gets a year’s membership, a uniform, protective mitts and unlimited training for the year and are graded twice, a package valued at around $1000 per student. One of the five recipietns has since adopted to pursue a dancing scholarship but the remaining four have continued and all show great promise.

AN AMAZING PROPERTY, WITH A LIFESTYLE SECOND TO NONE 3 ACRES Lot 2 Pinkerton Road, Naracoorte SA WOW, WOW & WOW, both inside and out. Nothing has been left to chance. If you love the inside, outside is even better. You will never need to go on holidays again. Offering a fully transformed modern, open living interior with a flexible floor plan. Central kitchen/living/dining area, with a slow combustion wood heater. The kitchen has recently been completed, with brand new appliances, 2 drawer dishwasher and spacious work areas. A separate walk-in pantry has excellent bench & storage space. A second living area has outside access from the carport and an adjoining office/bedroom, also with outside access. Galley style laundry with excellent cupboard space and separate toilet. The main bathroom includes a step-up spa bath. There is also a 3rd living or work area, which would also make a great spot for a library/home office or an additional bedroom. Ducted air conditioning is also in all downstairs rooms. A recent addition is the upstairs main bedroom, bathroom and living area. These rooms are accessed from an internal timber stairwell, but the building is completely separate to the main house. It offers an amazing ambiance, with the shear size of the rooms, decor and views. A balcony runs the length of the building. 16 solar panels have been installed on the northern side of the roof. Outside is an entertainers paradise, with a huge decked all weather entertainment area with pull down blinds, a solar heated

pool with advanced self cleaning, Balinese BBQ hut, landscaped garden beds, water features and lawn areas, with an automated watering system. Vegetable garden with raised beds, approx 30,000 gallons of rainwater plumbed throughout the house, equipped bore, enclosed cattery, dog runs and shedding. The shedding includes a 18m x 7.5m shed, with truck pit and 10.5m x 5.8m apron, 5m x 3m shed, 3 separate 6m x 9m sheds, 3m x 5m shed with kitchen & s/c wood heating. This property warrants an inspection, as a drive by gives no indication of what lies behind both the front and back doors. The price has been drastically reduced and this property is being sold below replacement cost. LOCAL Dancing After 13 years of treading the boards at Mount Gambier’s MJ Dance Studio, Steph Newton is about to fly solo – heading to Sydney to further her dancing career after being accepted in a one year course at Ev & Bow - a highly regarded contemporary studio. Although she won’t be completely alone with

queen two of her MJ alumni also heading to Sydney, albeit to a different school, and former Mount Gambier and MJ dancer Symiko De Van Der Schueren heading to Ev & Bow, as well. In fact the close friends are in the throes of searching for somewhere to live together as they embark on the next chapter of

competition in seventh place. And Steph hopes to finish her MJ career with her best ever results this January before heading to her intensive course, which sees her in class 8.30-4pm every day with plenty of weekend of night time work. “It’s a course that tried to get us performing and dancing as much as possible so we

their dancing careers side by side. The other two MJ students headed to Sydney are Cooper Terry and Katarina Gajic, who have both been snapped up by Tibor Horvath who talented indentified the duo when here in August for ballet workshops. But for Steph, lyrical and contemporary are her strength and passion and as soon as she returns from her final National Showcase, in January, as an MJ dancer, she is headed straight to Sydney for a January 28 start at Ev & Bow. After her 12 month intensive course, Steph hopes to secure a place in a contemporary dance company or earn a spot as a dancer in musical theatre circles. But for now her focus is still on MJ responsibilities with rehearsals every day from now, through the Christmas period and into January as she prepares her six solos and seven troupe performances. It’s her fifth time to be involved in the premier national dance competition. Last year was her best personal result – finishing inside the top 10 dance rankings at the

do a lot of practical work in the community,” she said. Steph admits the high calibre of quality teachers and choreographers that MJ Dance Studio principal Maria Slape has attracted to the studio has been a real advantage for MJ dancers looking to advance their careers. “It has taught us what to expect at the highest level,

has exposed us to a lot of teachers and a lot of dance styles and basically helps us know what’s what when we look to move away,” she said. “It has extended us and prepared us for the sort of courses and careers we are now going after.” Steph was a late bloomer by MJ standards, only tackling her first solo as an eight

year old but she hasn’t looked back. And while she is about to tackle a dancing career with everything she has, Steph knows it’s a tough industry to break into and to have a long career so her acceptance in a Bachelor of Medical Science is her fall back. “You absolutely want to succeed but I have to be practical and I will defer the science course and then see what happens,” she said. New food vendors, a focus on local entertainers and all the time honoured favourites are what visitors to the 2014 Bayside Festival can expect. The Port MacDonnell hosted event, which turns the foreshore into a hive of activity, runs from 9am to 6pm on January 5. Former Kingston act Lily and The Drum are returning from touring of Victorian and New South Wales to wow the crowd, while the Distractors are a local act also set to take to the foreshore stage, with Radio rounding out the local entertainment bill. There will also be a Jenga drum crew and Captain Glam, of Allendale’s Star Dressing Room, to add spice to the day’s live acts. The pie eating, bungy pull and octopus throw are always crowd pleasers and organisers have ensured these staple events have remained on the day’s calendar of events. The local youngsters will also be vying for Miss, Master and Junior Tiny Tot honours. A family ticket is $15 and adults are $5, ensuring a value for money day that boasts a wonderful market feel as well with the wide variety of stalls, from jewellery to food, from fresh produce to crafts, there is something to captivate the whole family. LOCAL Rookie

makes her mark Mild mannered car sales manager by day and hard working power lifter by early morning and night – that is the Yana Sim story. What started as a fitness campaign with Vitality Personal training has ended in an obsession that Yana hopes will yield a national title and Australian squat record. In just her second competition, on the October long weekend in Mildura, Yana lifted 315kg which automatically qualified her for the Australian Nationals, in Melbourne, in April, as part of the Health & Fitness Expo. “I will be going from lifting in front of 500 people to 30,000 people,” Yana said. And yet she is an accidental potential champion. “I honestly started with Rob at Vitality because I wanted to lose some weight,” she said. “We quickly discovered I could lift really heavy weights and he suggested I compete.” So in June this year, Yana entered her first competition and then came the Mildura success. And she has people in high places taking notice. She has enlisted the help of conditioning coach and well respected, international power lifter Tyler Harnett, from Canada. He works out of Adelaide and Yana

sends him videos of every training session she completed for feedback as well as visits to Adelaide for in person training sessions. “Tyler’s amazing – I love him to pieces,” Yana said. He has also helped her set up what is a commercial quality gym set up in her shed. At this stage she is preparing for a January competition in Adelaide and another Mildura event in February ahead of the April nationals. “I am building up to hopefully qualify for the Worlds,” Yana said. That being said, Yana is on a seven day a week

training program that sees her training for about two and a half hours a day – which is no mean feat for the mother of two small boys. Husband Jarrad is a huge support as Yana gets up to train at 4.30am most mornings to get as much in before the boys get up and her day as wife, mother and Carlin & Gazzard sales manager begins. And you can be rest assured, Yana is leaving no stone unturned as she looks to claim a national title and qualify for the world titles. She does Fast Twitch training in Adelaide once a

month – a training method used by a number of AFL clubs and the dual ANZ Championship winning Adelaide Thunderbirds. While Yana’s success seems to have come completely out of the blue, she does believe a career as a sprinter in her younger years might have helped in terms of the power in her legs. cont. opp. page Left & below - Yana Sim during competition in Mildura when she qualified for the nationals.

tempt the tastebuds And she will need to keep working on that as she aims for 160kg to break the Australian squat record. At the Mildura competition in October she lifted 117.5kg but she sees no reason she can’t make up the necessary ground, given how rapidly she has already risen in power lifting ranks. Power lifting is made up of three components – the squat, the bench press and the dead lift. Her 315kg nationals qualifying effort included 117.5 (squat); 62.5kg (bench) and 135kg (dead

lift). And while 12 months into official competition, Yana is focussed on her own campaign she is also hoping to get other locals interested in the sport and is happy to hear from anyone who would like to get involved – let’s face it – Yana has the perfect set up right at her own home. She is also looking for sponsorship to assist in her campaign to reach the pinnacle of her sport. To assist Yana in her quest or to get involved in power lifting yourself call Yana on 0408 844 353.

BLUE LAKE Y ANNUAL SWIM MEET Locals

make a splash

Local swimmers have again dominated the podium at the recent annual Blue Lake Y Swim Meet at Mount Gambier’s Olympic Park Pool. Host club Blue Lake Y was joined by 19 other clubs, including locally based swimmers from Mount Gambier Swim Club, Dolphins (Bordertown); Keith Swim Club, Casterton Swim Club and Hamilton Olympic Swim Club. Mount Gambier Swim Club’s Emily Gazzard was a standout in 2012 and again dominated her age group, winning five of the six events in which she competed, finishing second in the remaining event. She would have added to that tally had she not been unwell and unable to compete on day two. Hamilton’s Todd Dymke was another local standout, competing in the boys 9 & under events – winning four gold. Mont Gambier Swim Club had a superb 2012 and backed it up again in 2013, with 14 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze in individual events as well as two gold and two bronze from relay events. Hamilton Olympic also enjoyed a successful meet with Arielle Dickeson adding four silvers to Todd Dymke’s four gold. Bordertown’s Dolphins also did them proud, leaving the two day meet with a swag of medals that included three gold, two silver and two bronze. The host club won three gold in total, with Ewan Carpenter claiming two and Brayden Walters bringing home the other top award. Blue Lake Y also finished with six silver and 10 bronze and picked up a relay silver. Casterton Swim Club picked up a gold and a bronze, as well as a relay bronze. Keith Swim Club took home two silvers and two bronze medals.

LOCAL Leader From marching girl to drum major – it’s a leap not many young girls make but Carol Megaw did. It was a family tradition and after 25 years of leading the Mount Gambier City Band – a role she landed almost accidentally – Carol has put away the baton, the Limestone Coast Tattoo her swansong. It ended a 30 year association with the city band and an association with music in the region that dated back to her grandfather Clarrie Brill in 1907 when he joined the Mount Gambier Boys Band as a cornet player. And that’s just the start of the family’s association with musical ensembles – Carol’s brother Paul joined the

of the pack Mount Gambier City Band in 1957 and is still part of the group today, while her father Jim Brill was drum major for 20 years from 1968. The plan was for Carol, who cut her teeth in the Juliet’s Marching Girls Team, winning 11 medals over the journey, to learn the drum major role from her father but his sudden death in 1988 meant the apprenticeship never really began and her father’s dream of moving on to adjudication in State and national competition was also ended before it began. Carols’ mother was also an integral part of the city band as part of the ladies committee and that’s how Carol’s relationship with the band

started and before she knew it she was president. “The ladies committee eventually disbanded though, as people stopped using the hall for functions and the catering jobs were not really coming in,” Carol said. “I just went onto the ‘men’s’ committee and only started thinking about being drum major when my father started talking about giving up the role.” Those plans were hatched in November 1987 but Carol’s dad passed away in January ’88. And even in the late 19080s the city band was not really the domain of females and Carol was overlooked for the position initially. It was an exciting time in the band’s history with a swag

of competitions at State and National level and a number of special events. And it was on the eve of a special event that Carol got her break that ended up a 25 year celebrated career. The young army reservist that had secured the drum major position after her father’s death broke his collarbone in a touch football accident just before the Tall Ships arrived in Portland and the Mount Gambier City Band needed a drum major to guide them through this auspicious occasion – Carol was the ideal candidate and with no experience she took the reins and didn’t let go until this year’s November Limestone Coast Tattoo.

At the next AGM she was officially installed in the role. “Basically I

learnt on the job and just remembering what my father had done,” Carol said. “Watching him for years was as good as any course.” Carol admits to limited musical ability but the drum major has a different skill set. “You need to be able to keep a beat,” Carol said. “I couldn’t even read music when I started.” Carol also had help from a good mate of her father’s who lived in Ararat but would always put Carol through her paces ahead of important competitions. “It’s about deportment and being a leader,” she said. In a way the city band story is a parallel of

many sporting clubs in the region – training up juniors only to see them leave for university. “You would just have the band trained up and marching really well and half of them would head off to university,” Carol said. cont. opp. page. “But what I did love is in the early days in particular it was always a family oriented band – there were fathers and sons, mothers and daughters and at times there were five or six families that made up the entire band.” And she’s here to tell us that while some of the marching manoeuvres look simple, it takes a whole lot of practice. “It does take a lot of time to ensure everyone is dressed correctly, standing with good posture, marching in time and of course, still playing their instrument,”

she said. Perhaps fittingly, Carol is handing over to another female with a family connection – Olivia Harrison – her husband is the current band musical director. Carol knows she will miss the band and predicts that when she attends next year’s Christmas Parade there will be a tinge of sadness – it will be her first behind the blue line in 25 years. “I must admit this year when people I knew were waving and yelling out to me, I had a tear in the eye, just knowing it was my last parade,” she said.

I have received legal advice that this week is the perfect time of the year for publishing my annual apology. Their advice suggests that it can serve as a sorry to everyone I’ve upset over the last twelve months, as well as all those I plan on offending over the next year. Isn’t that efficient? Here goes. Sorry to all of our Federal,

I’d also like to apologise to all of the three hundred or so people I beat in the Blue Lake Fun Run a couple of weeks ago. bet you’re all feeling a whole lot of shame at the moment. Sucked in. after gay and lesbian marriage was legalised and then declared null and void by the High Court of Australia. Bigger apologies to those who attended the weddings and will probably have to go through it all again at some point when it’s legalised again. I hate weddings. Sorry to that guy in Millicent the other week who caught himself on fire when he was trying to steal petrol from a car and decided to light a cigarette. I laughed about

it. There’s something entertaining about dumb criminals running around with their pants on fire. I know that I shouldn’t laugh about other people’s misfortune. Sincere apologies to anyone who has watched a reality television program in 2013 under the impression it has some shred of realism. I am sorry that you have wasted hours of your life that you will never get back again. They’ve taken that from you and you really should be suing them. I can’t believe they did that to you. I’m sorry to Homer Simpson. I can’t believe that little attention seeking twerker Miley Cyrus stole your idea

I said you should be banned from ever coaching again, sent to Guantanamo Bay or drawn and quartered. I questioned your hairstyle, your coaching credentials, your taste in clothing and ability to organise an entertaining football trip. I realise I was wrong now. Your hair’s not that bad. Sorry to Jessica Simpson, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Jessica Tandy, Jessica Mauboy, Jennifer Anniston, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Capriati. It seems so tragic that you lovely ladies have had to spend another day on this planet without meeting me. We’ll see if we can sort that out for you this year. Anyway, I think that covers just about everyone. If you think I need to apologise to you and haven’t covered it here, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com and I’ll get back to you with a personal apology. I’ve got some already half written. 12/12 Exhibition PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND

The annual 12/12 exhibition endeavours to celebrate and bring awareness to nature, in particular the natural environment in South West Victoria, creating a visual dialogue around the very broad theme of environmental change. The objectives of this exhibition are to provide a creative, non-commercial and explorative environment, for emerging and mid career artists, from Sydney and the South West, to create innovative work related to the theme. This year’s 12/12 exhibition, curated by Catherine Bailey, will focus on work made out of fibre and textile from artists such as Carmel Wallace, Cherree Densley, Deb Saunders and Kellie Frankland from South West Alternative Medium Project Inc (SWAMP). In addition, two-time winner of the Qantas SOYA Visual Arts Award, and Sony World Photography Awards finalist Joshua Heath, from Sydney, will be exhibiting a video and there will also be some installations and printmaking on display.

and Hayley Blok will be hosting their first Bridal Expo. Sean and Hayley fell in love with these gardens back in 2001 when they exchanged their vows in front of their family and friends, so much so they ended up purchasing the

property five years ago and have added their creative flair and have reintroduced it to the region as Blok Gardens for couples to embark on the beginning of their own love story. Hayley has been a photographer in the region capturing

those priceless wedding moments for the past seven years and during this time she has worked alongside various local businesses from catering to DJs, makeup artists to hair stylists and so many more and both Sean and Hayley decided it was time to showcase those and more suppliers in a one stop shop Bridal Expo where the region’s engaged couples, families and friends could head along and find everything they need in the one stunning location. cont. page 32 Left - Hayley and Sean Blok on their wedding day. action packed event January 3 Tyrendarra Rodeo Tyrendarra Oval, Princes Highway, Tyrendarra. Gates open 4pm. A fabulous evening of raw fun with bucking bulls and horse events, the Tyrendarra Rodeo is the town’s major community fundraiser for the year to raise funds for local projects. In 2014, the Brook Chivell band will provide the entertainment, along with the mechanical bucking bull, side show stalls, and plenty of food and drink on site will keep everyone interested, with after competition entertainment as well. There is camping available. The Tyrendarra Rodeo was established in the mid 90s to enable the completion of the pavilion for the community and sporting clubs. It is in its 18th year

bridal expo 2014 Making your day as local as it is memorable The couple is hopeful it will be a successful and regular event for the future. Having all of those wedding suppliers from as far afield as Coleraine at their gorgeous gardens it also showcases the venue that they have lovingly developed for wedding ceremonies. In 2013 Sean and Hayley have already hosted five wedding ceremonies at Blok Gardens. Sean and Hayley have stated that social media has generated volumes of interest in the up and coming Bridal Expo with the couple posting on Facebook and receiving great response from local businesses. Sean and Hayley promoted the gardens alongside other businesses in the Lakes Resort Bridal Expo in May 2013 and were fortunate to network and have had continual support.

Sean and Hayley have offered to other interested businesses that have missed this Bridal Expo the opportunity to leave business cards on an allocated table on the day. The Bridal Expo will run from 11am-4pm on Sunday, January 12, and entry is a gold coin donation. One of the twists to this Bridal Expo is the buy, swap and sell bridal element where past brides have the opportunity to sell any unwanted items from their special day and provide inspiration to future brides to be. A free competition will be held on the day for couples that are interested in getting married at Blok Gardens in conjuction with the beautiful horse and carriages supplied by Weddings N Things. The winner of this competition will win a heavily discounted package from both

The 2014 Festival will showcase everything Robe has to offer, along with a huge collection of boats, tackle, electronics, 4 wheel drive vehicles, rubber boats, engines, sailing dinghies, a seafood feast, wines, local bee and an art . Dining on Board with The Fisherman is as far as we can ascertain unique to Robe with the skippers of 12 of the cray fishing fleet welcoming 10 guests each on board their boats for a lobster banquet, accompanied by the best wines from our Limestone Coast region. The proceeds from this event are donated by the Fisherman’s Association to a local charity.

Will this be the season?

Mount Gambier sprintcar driver Steve Lines has been there and thereabouts in the past two seasons of World Series Sprintcars and as the 2013/14 series heats up this week with Speedweek. He has finished third (2012/13) and sixth (2011/12) in his previous two attempts but has never entered the high octane series in better form. His season started in Toowoomba with wins on two successive nights, and followed by a win in Murray Bridge, he has then backed that up with a second at Speedway Park, in Adelaide, a win at Avalon (Geelong) and a win at his home track – the Borderline Speedway. Two more wins at Premier Speedway and Geelong saw the Mount Gambier ace sitting on seven wins by mid December. One last run at Premier Speedway in Warrnambool provided his lead in to Speedweek – the intensive five round opening to the

12 round World Series Sprintcar championship. Lines cannot put his finger on exactly why the start to 2013/14 has been so much better than previous seasons but getting the right team around him and having a car that’s performing at a high level and consistently reliable doesn’t hurt either. “And I am older and wiser I guess,” Lines said. “You don’t take the same stupid risks or do the same dumb things you might have when you were starting out, you get a lot smarter about your racing.” Lines believes his association with crew chief Craig Bennett is finally bearing fruit in terms of providing the car in the best possible shape for every event. “Over the years we’ve trialled a lot of things and it is paying off now,” Lines said. “We did have a grand plan but it did take some different twists and turns but we got there finally.” Lines believes he has improved about

40 percent as a driver in the past 12-18 months and Bennett has picked up about 20 percent and that combination has seen the successful start to the season. But one thing that hasn’t changed is Lines’ laid back and pragmatic attitude. “We should be up there again in World Series this year,” Lines said. “But we really do take it as it comes – we’ve got good results at the start of the year and it’s good to get runs on the board but I put no more pressure on myself going into this series as I have the previous two.” Motor racing is not a cheap sport and Lines admits, aside from the prestige, winning the major races is good for the bottom line as well. His close assocaition with backer Brian Hall, of the Western Australian based Halls Motorsports, has been vital in Lines’ rise through the ranks. “Put it this way, it I don’t win big during World Series it won’t be for lack of trying,”

he said. Lines admits he has a better understanding of his opponents as well as he heads into his third WSS series. “You know the guys you have to pass first time because that’s the only shot you’ll get,” he said. “You just know how they drive and where and when to make your move – it’s that experience that is making me drive better

as well I think.” Lines didn’t take the traditional path into sprintcars, moving from junior sedans into street stocks and than sprintcars. In fact he started in motocross out at McNamara Park. “Basically a few mates decided to move to speedway so I just followed,” Lines said. He did win a few State titles on the bike but believes his ability

is definitely better with the cars. The boilermaker won an Australian Street Stock Title and his record in sprintcars stacks up against some of the sport’s most respected drivers. But right now the focus is Speedweek – the frenetic start to the World Series Sprintcars that really sets the stage for the championships race.
