Page 1

Door-to-Door Dear Neighbors, The summer of 2013 is beginning to wind down, but before it comes to a close I want to invite you to our new event, a community concert that will be held on September 8 from 1 pm–5 pm in the Arena Parking Lot on North Main Street.

Letter From The President North Main Street Rocks! ED Renovations Community Liaison Corner

The event is called “North Main Street Rocks,” and is detailed on the back cover of this month’s Door-to-Door issue. Local musical acts from Providence and Rhode Island will perform. The event will also include family activities, food trucks, neighborhood community booths, a “Dunk For Good” tank, and more. I hope you will attend the event with your friends and families. The Miriam Hospital has been part of the North Main Street Advisory Committee since its inception, and this event has been planned in conjunction with merchants and other engaged stakeholders of the neighborhood. As many of you know we have been renovating our Emergency Department since 2012. Renovations are occurring predominately inside the walls of the main building with minimal impact to the community. In keeping with our commitment to maintain community sensitive construction practices, we have limited the use of heavy equipment and external staging as much as possible. In brief, we anticipate that the Emergency Department renovations will be complete by June of 2014. Other construction this summer has included the removal and rebuilding of a new MRI area in the back of the hospital. We anticipate that our new MRI machine will arrive within the next 3–6 weeks. We will notify neighbors living along Highland Avenue of the date of the crane lift for the new MRI. Should you have any questions or concerns about our Emergency Department renovations or other issues, please call The Neighborhood Hotline at (401) 793-4040 or email TMHneighbors@lifespan.org Sincerely,

“Autumn... the year’s last, loveliest smile.” –William Cullen Bryant

Narragansett Bay Commission and Highland Avenue We were notified in early August that Highland Avenue will be closing in segments as The Providence Water Company and Narragansett Bay Commission continue with their work in the neighborhood. As a result of the work on this street, we will need to alter the timing and location of various hospital deliveries. Please know that where possible we will re-route our deliveries to either the Fifth Street or Seventh Street entrances during regular business hours. Larger deliveries needing a loading dock area will be scheduled after the NBC work is completed each day. We anticipate that these altered delivery times may occur slightly outside of our normal operating hours of 7 am–7 pm. During this period of road construction we will try to keep our deliveries between the hours of 7 am–8 pm extending the time by one hour. We will also coordinate the staging of large vehicles off site as much as possible. Please expect some delays along Fifth and Seventh Streets through the end of August as a result of the NBC road construction.

ED Renovations and Crane Notice

On Saturday, August 24, The Miriam Hospital needs to replace an air handling unit on the “A” building, the older part of our main hospital building. We will be utilizing a crane, which will be stationed entirely within our property at the front circle for this project. The project will last for approximately 3–4 hours. We must complete this work on a weekend in order to avoid disruption to critical patient areas. Set up of the crane will begin at 8 am on August 24, weather permitting. We do not anticipate any disruption to the neighborhood while the work is taking place. There may be some road delay as the crane and the support truck travel to the site, but this will be minimal. If you have questions, concerns or comments about this project or any other hospital related issues, please call The Neighborhood Hotline at (401) 793-4040 or email TMHneighbors@lifespan.org.

Recycling fever has take over The Miriam Hospital and its employees.

Community After several months of planning, I am pleased to announce that we have transitioned to single

stream recycling and are engaging our employees to recycle all plastics, papers and cardboards through a new program called “The Recycling Zone.”

This summer we also launched the first ever “Miriam Badge Bucks” promotion aimed at encouraging our employees to shop on Hope Street. Thank you to all the merchants on Hope Street who agreed to participate in the effort. The promotion includes discounts for employees and an end of summer raffle. Supporting our local commercial districts by encouraging our employees to shop local is a key driver of our citizenship efforts. In the weeks to come we will be announcing the timeline for the 2013–2014 Community Investment Grant timeline. Since 2006 we have invested over $337,000 in grant dollars to organizations within the Summit and Mt. Hope Neighborhoods. Grantees are awarded funding for developing programs in the areas of youth education and development for grades 6–12, health and wellness programming, and environmental and community revitalization efforts. During the 2012–2013 grant cycle recipients of the funding included The Mount Hope Neighborhood Association, The Mount Hope Learning Center, Groundwork Providence, Festival Ballet, The Groden Center, and The Hope Street Merchants Association.

I NEEDS YOU! EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

TMH

In 2012 Hurricane Sandy caused a New York City Hospital to evacuate 300 patients when the power failed and back up generators did not provide back up power. On Tuesday, September 10 at 9 am, The Miriam Hospital will engage in a Full Building evacuation Drill. The Emergency Preparedness Committee regularly plans and practices for a wide range of incidents that could affect out continuity of care as a healthcare provider. We will be holding a full building evacuation and need volunteers to come and play the role of a patient. Would you consider spending a few hours to help us prepare? Your time will help us learn the steps needed to save lives in case of an actual building evacuation. If you are interested in learning more about this unique volunteer activity, please call Monica on The Neighborhood Hotline at (401) 793-4040.
