A Note from Manda
This issue marks one year of LPS and it has been a wild ride but a lot of fun and very inspiring too. As most of you know by now LPS was started for a bit of fun to fill in some time between freelance work and I honestly never believed it would become so big, so of course I wasn’t prepared. There had been no plan for it to be an ongoing thing so I didn’t worry about getting help, of course when the October issue got over 1.5million views I was pretty much out of my depth. I couldn’t get the January issue out due to a number of reasons but, and this is why I am lucky, you were all so supportive. The truth is this magazine isn’t about really about scrapbooking, it’s about you. Yes, you - without you sitting down to document your memories, without you sending in your work and patiently waiting while I sort through it all, without your readership, without your support there wouldn’t be a Life.Paper.Scrapbook. So I want to say THANK YOU!!! Your support means the world to me. This issue is PACKED choc-o-block full of scrappy inspiration, a crazy amount. We have new challenge based submissions, a summer/winter gallery for ideas on how to document your recent or upcoming holidays/vacations. Three awesome Featured Designers from around the world, I chat with the fabulous Linda Townes (YouTube scrapbook “hoarder”) and of course inspiration from our Design Team and all of our awesome readers. Linda Townes We have all been there, you see some awesome, scrappy supply on a blog or a YouTube video and you HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!! (Well, I know I have!) Linda Townes has too and she isn’t too proud to admit it. Her video has gone viral among scrappers around the world because we can all relate. Linda had me laughing so much that I wanted to find out a bit more about this funny, fabulous and very honest woman. - Manda Tell us a bit about yourself? I’m original from New York, born and raised, I loved it because it’s a great place to live and learn when you’re young and having fun, but as I got older and started a family I realized that fun was no longer an option so I opted for something different from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, with that in mind I moved to the Carolinas to raise my two girls. It was just what we needed peace and quiet and time to think. Crafting has always been a big part of my life from the first time I held a piece of construction paper in my hands I was hooked, Crafting to me just makes so much sense. You take a piece of paper some string and glue and the finished product has always been amazing to me, I find so much peace and comfort when I’m crafting, so I try to do a little every day. I’ve done a lot of crafting in my time and I love them all knitting, crocheting , cross stitch, latch hook, painting, sewing, quilling, you name it I’ve given it a shot at least once, but my first love is paper crafting, you can make anything from a piece of paper and the right glue! 4
What are your favourite projects to make? My Favorite projects to make are the ones that will be sent to friends and family, the small things like shadow boxes, altered anything, cards, seasonal projects (Christmas, Valentines, Easter) it just makes the time spent making them so worth it. People have loved your “Haul” video probably because they can relate (I know I can!). Were you surprised it went viral in the scrapping community? The video has been on youtube for about 2 years embedded in an episode of Table Scraps (Hoarders) I did a little skit called “What the Heck” when it was done everyone loved it and then it was over. Then one day some of my subbies were asking me to repost the video because they wanted to watch it again. I posted it and didn’t give it a second thought, two days later I checked my channel and Surprised is not the word, I was a little over whelmed, I had to disconnect from all my social media for a few days.
I called my bff Pam and said what have I done? (thanks to Tim Holtz tweeting) that darn Video went Viral she had to talk me through it and when I reconnected and started reading the comments I found that I was not the only scrap-a-holic out there I felt so much better. What is your favourite brand/item? My Favorite brand or item would be, Welllllllll, lets see, I have so many and with the large selection of things I have to choose from it makes it hard to answer, but if I had to choose I would say it would be Wild Orcade Crafts flowers I love those things, I try and find a way to work them into almost every project I’m working on, they are just so pretty. What is your best shopping tip? Best shopping tip: when you’re out shopping, and you see that thing-a-magig that you just have to have in your life, that to die for thing that’s just begging you to take it home. If you have the money right there, pick it up put it on the counter and claim it, pay for it and take it home, because when you walk away to give it
some thought, to weigh the pros and cons Just out of curiosity did you ever of buying verses not buying and you finally make your chunky mini? do make up your mind and turn to retrieve Oh yes I have made many a chunky mini, your thing-a-ma-gig, it is on its way home some of them didn’t make it to youtube with someone else. How sad it is to see because they were for family and friends, your thing-a-ma-gig walking out the door I really enjoy making them because you can put just about anything in them and to someone else’s home knowing that they always turn out good. you’re only one that could make it truly happy? Meet Danielle: I’m Danielle de Konink, a 32 year old single girl from The Netherlands. I live in one of the bigger cities of the country, only a 10 minute bike ride from the beach. I have a full time job as a management assistant at an insurance company and a lot of my spare time is spended on scrapbooking. I also teach classes at my LSS, which is so much fun and I love to inspire others! Besides scrapbooking I love to spend good quality time with my family and friends, read books and a big favorite is traveling. I don’t have kids, but you’ll find my 4 yr old niece and 2 yr old nephew on a lot of my scrapbook pages and I scrap a lot about my travels. Meet Alexandra B: My name is Alexandra Boehnke (nickname Alex). I’m 35 years old and I live with my husband Michael in Frankfurt am Main/Germany. At the end of 2009 I have found my way to scrapbooking via some creative techniques (such as crochet, knitting, sewing, crafts). Scrapbooking has become a part of my life. Meet Shannon: My name is Shannon Morgan. I am a Great Lakes nerd girl inhabiting the South. I am a wife to Karl (who is ah-mazing), Momma Girl to Paddy, Mack, Cinna and Meg, daughter to some great parents and a quirky (good quirks) girl who likes to make her friends smile. I love creating, being caffeinated, reading, cartoons, animals, music and tattoos. I love being able to share creativity with others. aka Penny Lane Tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Monika Pröbster and I live in Germany in a small town near Heidelberg. On the internet, I often call myself “Penny Lane”, the one from the Beatles’ song ;) I’m 28 years old and study Psychology. In my free time you’ll most likely find me scrapping, blogging or taking pictures:) Since last December I’m on the Design-Team of Scrapbook-Werkstatt, a German online shop. I’m a tea-and-coffee drinker. 32
Penny Lane When/how did you get into paper crafting? I started with art journaling and a bit of mixed-media during the winter holidays in 2011/12, a subject which I got to know through books I bought on the internet...Browsing the web looking for inspiration and supplies, this led me to scrapbooking some time later. It was in the summer of 2012 when I fell for the pretty papers, embellishments and possibilities they offered. I started with a smashbook, then making mini-books and layouts, too. Since then I have been totally addicted. How would you describe your style? Hmmm...a pretty difficult question... Partly I would say I’ve found “my style”, partly I am still trying to evolve and experiment a lot. I like pastel colors as well as light, fresh ones...And I love layers and a bit of messiness on layouts. And graphics, watercolour effects, little details, golden sparkles..:) So I would probably describe it as “light-messy-colourful-pastel-freestyle-layered”. Sort of ;) 33

Where do you look for inspiration? As clichée as it may sound, I really think inspiration is all around us. Sometimes just walking around in the countryside or a city and you suddenly get ideas. And when you travel somewhere you get so many new impressions that can lead you to new projects and ideas. More precisely speaking, I like interiors and decorations - in real life and in magazines and these inspire me very much. Moodboards, sketches or colour palettes are great sources, too. Furthermore, I think the world of graphic design is fascinating and very inspiring. And a lot of inspirations comes from my favourite books, series and movies, like Alice in Wonderland, Agatha Christie’s books or more modern stuff ;) Meeting and learning from other scrappers, for example having workshops or cropping with them is also wonderful, because it’s always suprising how differently the same supplies can be used and how different approaches are in general. What makes you happy? Being at the seaside. Spending time with the people I love. Cozy cafés. Photographing. Discovering things. Lovely collections. And creating of course :) Especially when you see an idea that only existed in your mind before, more or less vague, suddenly become a reality in front of you.

Colour Challenge

Sandy Ang Tell us a bit about yourself? I’m a 40-something, paper-based crafter from the sunny, little island of Singapore. I’m a leftie, with the habit of taking regular afternoon naps and a terrible push-over when it comes to giving in to my pet kitty. When/how did you get into paper crafting? When my sister and her family moved to the United States in 2010, I started making cards to send to them on special occasions. It was such a pleasure to indulge my creative side that I soon became hooked on paper crafting making both cards and off-the-page projects like holiday decor items, paper jewellery, gift packaging etc. A couple of years later I had the opportunity to design for a Malaysian retailer of Studio Calico Kits which started me scrapbooking. 84
How would you describe your style? That’s a difficult question for me to answer. My pages are generally designed with an emphasis on placement of lines, convergence of angles and interplay of shapes. I enjoy mixing pattern papers and layering is one of my favourite techniques. Whenever I have the luxury of time, I’ll experiment with interesting typographic effects by making my own titles or printing my journaling in ultra large-size fonts across the page. So I guess if I have to give my style a label it’ll have to be classic contemporary. Where do you look to for inspiration? It comes from all sorts of ordinary, everyday encounters. For example, I’m having my bathroom redone now and while shopping for tiles I came across some mosaic

samples which gave me the idea for a new pattern paper technique: cutting them into geometric pieces and assembling these mock-tesserae pieces onto a preprinted transparency grid to form mosaic blocks. Another example would be when I studied (how often do we look but don’t really see) a colonial school building while waiting for a bus. Its two stories high with a series of semi-circular arches on the ground floor and stain glass windows above. When I got this wood grain and peeled paint papers in a Citrus Twist kit I recreated the memory of that facade, down to replicating the translucent windows with a cut-out, vellum-covered title.

What makes you happy? Being able to take time out of the week to indulge in creative expression is a wonderful privilege. I try to experiment with new ideas and to tackle different design problems so there’s always a sense of challenge and excitement when I embark on a new project. The entire process of scrapbooking from conceptual design to hands-on execution really provides me with enormous satisfaction. 87

Designer Tip: I wanted to take an underwater photo, but my father was not inclined to do so. What I did instead was put the camera, which had a protective covering, underwater while we peered down at it from above water to create a similar effect. I placed the photo behind a piece of transparency and paper pieced a port hole to show the view outside the ship. - Michelle
