TO REHUMANIZE CONFERENCE 2018. WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE HERE. Dear friends for life, justice, and peace: I am truly overwhelmed by the sheer joy and excitement that I have had in preparing this phenomenal weekend for you all. I firmly believe that this year’s conference is the best that we have ever put together — and a big part of that is your participation. We have included the voices of experts: academics and activists with lived experience, and grassroots leaders who are making a difference with their communities. After looking at the schedule of the weekend events, I’m sure that you’ll be
saying the same thing we hear every year from our attendees: “I wish I could be in three places at once!” Every breakout session could be worthy of the keynote main stage — but we wanted to present to you as many opportunities as possible to hear about a wide breadth and depth of issues relating to the Consistent Life Ethic. So this weekend, I hope that you will dive in — you will get out of this conference what you put into it! Get ready to get educated, get engaged, and get equipped. Oh, and if you want to bring this event back to your community, make sure to ask us how you can be a conference host!

Ifeoma Anunkor
Caroline Bennett
Rehumanize International Ifeoma Anunkor hails from New York City and previously worked as director of the young adult initiative at the Human Life Review. She serves on the board of Abide Women’s Health Services which works to improve birth outcomes in vulnerable communities. She holds a JD from Columbia University.
Feminists Choosing Life of New York Caroline Bennett is a recent graduate from Cornell University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Policy Analysis and Management, with minors in demography, law and society, prison education, and inequality studies. She is a board member of Feminists Choosing Life of NY, a non-profit organization that promotes pro-life feminism and the consistent life ethic. She is currently a Teach for America corps member, teaching English as a New Language to sixth graders in Buffalo, NY as she pursues her Master’s degree in Urban Education.

Mary Grace Coltharp
Witness to Innocence Kirk is the first American to have been sentenced to death row and later proven innocent and exonerated by DNA evidence. By the time of his release in 1993, he had spent almost nine years in prison, two of them on death row. He now works with WTI and other organizations to prevent executions of innocents and end the use of the death penalty in the U.S.
Rehumanize International Mary Grace Coltharp grew up in a family of five in Maine and northern Virginia, learning Christian values and going to Catholic school, where she was an artsy, academic kid. Having always been a social justice advocate and peace-keeper, Mary Grace really found her passion for the pro-life cause in high school. After graduating, she took a gap year to volunteer with expecting moms, the poor, and the elderly, but now she is ecstatic to be working in the heart of the pro-life and pro-peace movements as an intern for Rehumanize International.
Norm Conti Duquesne University Elsinore-Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice Norman Conti is an Associate Professor of Sociology, specializing in social psychology. Dr. Conti, along with six men serving life sentences at the State Correctional Institution in Pittsburgh, founded the Elsinore-Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice (EBTT), where they created and developed the Police Training Inside-Out. After the prison closed and the incarcerated members were scattered throughout the state, the EBTT was re-established at Duquesne as a weekly conference of community activists and ex-offenders to serve as a communications hub for developing and ongoing programs. Dr. Conti is a Fellow in Duquesne’s Center for Community Engaged Teaching and Research, and is a member of the national steering committee for the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program.

Thad Crouch
Veterans for Peace Veteran peace and justice activist, Thad Crouch, is seen in the 1999 documentary Crossing the Line leading the cadence of a Veterans for Peace march against the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) — where he had previously assisted training as a soldier. Thad served on a Christian Peacemaker Teams delegation to Haiti and lived with his “enemies” for three weeks in a Nicaraguan Sandinista agriculture cooperative. He’s been arrested at the SOA and the Nevada National Security (nuclear test) Site, served on the Pax Christi New Orleans Council, and coordinated the Religion & Labor Network of Austin. As 2016 stand-in Texas Regional Coordinator, he persuaded Pax Christi USA leadership to identify with the Consistent Life Ethic. Thad volunteers with the Consistent Life Network and locally with VFP, Pax Christi, 40 Days for Life, and his church Respect Life Ministry.
Mimi Darragh
Pax Christi Pittsburgh Mimi Darragh has been a member of Pax Christi since 1991. She works for a Catholic parish in Pittsburgh as a social outreach minister.
Dr. Michael Deem
Duquesne University Michael Deem is an Assistant Professor at Duquesne University, holding a joint appointment in the School of Nursing and the Center for Healthcare Ethics. Michael completed a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame in 2015. He then served as the 2015-16 Pediatric Ethics and Genomics Fellow at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Additionally, through the Children’s Mercy Division of Clinical Genetics he accrued over 100 observation hours in genetic counseling at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Midwest Perinatal Associates, and The University of Kansas Cancer Center. He, his wife, and their four children live in the Pittsburgh area.
Sister Barbara Finch
Pax Christi Pittsburgh Sr. Barbara Finch has been a Sister of St. Joseph since 1979. She combines the ministries of Nursing, Church ministry, and a passion for Interfaith work and Justice with the intention of transforming that which divides us. Sr. Barbara has a particular commitment towards Nonviolence.
Catherine Glenn Foster Americans United for Life

Catherine Glenn Foster is President & CEO of Americans United for Life. In this role, Foster heads up the nation’s premier pro-life legal team, which pioneers the state-based model legislative strategy and undermines the Supreme Court’s false notion that women cannot succeed in American society without legalized abortion. She serves as President of the Board of Directors for Rockville Women’s Center, as a member of the board for And Then There Were None, and the Christian Legal Society D.C. Metro Chapter, as well as an advisory board member for the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity. Foster earned her J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center, holds an M.A. in French from the University of South Florida, and a B.A. in History and French from Berry College.
Beth Fox
Tiny in stature, big in ambition, Beth Fox’s life is a story worth sharing. Before she even had a name, Beth became a prime target for abortion. Her mother’s pregnancy was risky and doctors advised an abortion to preserve her life. Beth’s poor fetal prognosis led doctors to conclude her quality of life would be so poor that having an abortion would be the “merciful” choice. Though living a life with chronic illness and disability is a battle, Beth is here to share why life is worth living and fighting for. Today, Beth cannot see, walk, or breath on her own; it is through these physical struggles, past doubts of self-value, and the diagnosis of a rare, life-limiting disorder that Beth has developed an active voice aimed to making positive changes. Despite her challenges, Beth lives independently in central Virginia, where she pursues her second Master’s degree and aspires to become a professor and lovingly foster terminally ill children.
Jeannie French
Democrats for Life of America Jeannie French is a board member of Democrats for Life of America (DFLA). French’s whole life philosophy is that “The answer to a crisis pregnancy is to eliminate the Crisis Not the Child.” The founder of the National Women’s Coalition for Life, Jeannie spearheaded a 6 city effort to listen to women who regretted their abortions. Real Choices (Multnomah Press) edited by Frederica Mathewes-Green conveys the findings. Jeannie’s personal experience of carrying a fatally impaired baby to term led to her testimony before the US Senate Judiciary and other state assemblies in support of a ban on partial-birth abortion. French holds a Masters Degree in Health Administration from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
Herb Geraghty Rehumanize International
Herb Geraghty is the Director of Communications of Rehumanize International. With an academic background in rhetoric and politics and a unique position as a politically independent, LGBT, vegan, atheist, anti-abortion feminist, Herb has the ability to break down barriers and reach demographics that are often untapped by the mainstream pro-life movement. Herb has a passion for building bridges and finding common ground with folks across the political spectrum to call everyone to a greater consistency in the fight for human rights.
Kelsey Hazzard Secular Pro-Life
Kelsey Hazzard is the founder and president of Secular Pro-Life, which brings together people of every faith and no faith in defense of the human right to life. She was raised in the (pro-choice) United Methodist church, and is now an atheist. Kelsey is a proud graduate of the University of Miami (B.A. 2009) and the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D. 2012). She has appeared in media outlets from Slate to The Weekly Standard, her writings are regularly reprinted on LifeNews.com and Live Action News, and you might recognize her from the pro-life documentary film 40. In the rare moments that she’s not practicing law or advocating against abortion, she enjoys nature hikes and karaoke.

Chrissy H.
Chrissy is currently working towards finishing her MD as well as her Masters in Bioethics, and is a former Rehumanize International intern from summer 2016. In the long term, she hopes to use her experience as a physician and bioethicist to be an advocate in the medical field and in larger society for the rights and respect of all human beings.

Robert Saleem Holbrook is an organizer with the Human Rights Coalition, an organization committed to centering the leadership of people and communities impacted by mass incarceration.
Jennifer Jordan Look Who’s Here! All-Abilities Media
Jennifer Szweda Jordan is executive producer of Look Who’s Here! All-Abilities Media, a project of her media startup Unabridged Press. Through Look Who’s Here! people with disabilities host award-winning professional podcast and video interviews about health and wellness, the arts, and inclusion. Jennifer is a Seton LaSalle alum, writer for U.S. Catholic magazine, and former host of The Allegheny Front environmental radio program on 90.5 WESA.
Annette Lancaster And Then There Were None
Annette went to work for Planned Parenthood of Chapel Hill, NC in September 2015. After a short nine month tenure, she was ready to leave. Her breaking point was not just one specific situation, but a combination of many unsettling truths about the abortion industry and what really takes place behind closed doors. She contacted Abby Johnson’s Ministry, And Then There Were None, in May of 2016 and is now glad to be called a “Quitter”!
Rachel MacNair
Institute for Integrated Social Analysis & Consistent Life Network Rachel MacNair is Director of the Institute for Integrated Social Analysis, research arm of Consistent Life. She graduated from Earlham College with a Bachelor’s in Peace and Conflict Studies, and got her Ph.D. in psychology and sociology from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She is the author of the book Perpetration-Induced Traumatic Stress: the Psychological Consequences of Killing, the college-level textbook The Psychology of Peace: An Introduction, and a book explaining aspects of peace psychology applying to pro-life principles called Achieving Peace in the Abortion War. She’s the blog editor and the editor of the weekly Peace & Life Connections for the Consistent Life Network.

Kelly Matula Rehumanize Pittsburgh
Kelly is the president of Rehumanize Pittsburgh, the local affiliate of Rehumanize International. She will soon be finishing her doctoral degree in Behavioral Decision Research from Carnegie Mellon University; her research focuses on medical decision making. Due to lifelong disabilities and chronic health issues, Kelly is a veteran consumer of healthcare and is very familiar with the negative effects of ableism. Since she was in elementary school, Kelly has worked, in various formal and informal ways, to advocate for people with disabilities and to educate nondisabled people about disability issues. Kelly has also been active in the pro-life cause for well over a decade, with campus pro-life organizations at Princeton University and Carnegie Mellon and now with Rehumanize Pittsburgh.
Aimee Murphy Rehumanize International
Aimee Murphy is the Executive Director and founder of Rehumanize International, the non-partisan, secular human rights organization making waves for the Consistent Life Ethic causeZ. After a personal conversion to the cause against abortion as a teen, she came to support and defend a holistic ethic of nonviolence which carried over to the founding of Life Matters Journal in 2011. Her life’s work is dedicated to infusing all of society with the passion and consistent ethics for all human life through education and discourse — one heart at a time. Aimee currently lives in Pittsburgh, PA with her husband and their dog and whichever friends or family are currently crashing there, too.
Kyle Murphy Rehumanize International
Kyle Murphy is a Law Student at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been active in the pro-life movement since 2003, and active in the Consistent Life Ethic movement since 2011, when his then-fiancee Aimee (Bedoy) Murphy founded Life Matters Journal. Kyle is the current Accounts Manager of Rehumanize International, a position he holds as a volunteer. He also serves as a volunteer in many other capacities for Rehumanize International, including driver, conference logistics, emotional support, and pizza delivery.
Mary O’Callaghan Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture
Mary O’Callaghan received her doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of Notre Dame, specializing in developmental disabilities. She is currently a Public Policy Fellow at the Center for Ethics and Culture at the University of Notre Dame, where she works on ethical issues related to disability. Her public policy work has included testimony before the Indiana State Senate in favor of legislative restrictions on disability-selective abortions as well as testimony before the United Nations. Dr. O’Callaghan is also co-founder of Miriam’s Blessing. Her youngest son, Tommy, has Down syndrome.

Odiraa Okala Rehumanize International
Odiraa Okala is a graduate student in the CERT program at Virginia Commonwealth University. He graduated with a BA in Public Policy and a minor in Public Health in 2016 from the College of William & Mary. Eventually, Odiraa hopes to go to medical school and obtain a joint degree in public health or public policy.
Maria Oswalt Rehumanize International
Maria Oswalt is a artist, activist, and avid tea drinker. She got her start in pro-life work while studying at The University of Alabama, where she earned a Bachelor’s in studio art. Since graduating in 2017, she has worked as a freelance designer, and she spent some time working and living abroad in Ireland. Most recently, she was hired as the Director of Creative Projects for Rehumanize International.
Maria Pane Rehumanize International
Maria Pane is a senior at the University of Pittsburgh double majoring in Fiction Writing and English Literature. Maria established Create | Encounter as a space to merge art and life issues for her summer 2017 internship with Rehumanize International. Now she is the executive editor of Life Matters Journal. When she isn’t reading or adventuring to art museums, you can find her in a coffee shop, knee deep in espresso, writing drafts of her novel and short stories.
Michael Pastorkovich Pax Christi Pittsburgh
Michael Pastorkovich has a degree in philosophy and is a member of Pittsburgh Area Pax Christi and Chair of the Sierra Club Allegheny Group. Now retired, he spent the majority of his working years in the telecommunications industry.
Dr. Anthony Pizon University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Dr. Anthony Pizon received his medical degree from the University of Toledo School of Medicine in 2001. He then completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and his Medical Toxicology Fellowship at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Pizon is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Medical Toxicology at the University of Pittsburgh. He serves as Chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology at UPMC. He is also Medical Director of the West Virginia Poison Center and Assistant Medical Director of the Pittsburgh Poison Center. Yet, most importantly, he is blessed with amazing wife, Caryn, and four wonderful children. “With God, all things are possible.”

Monica Ruiz Casa San José
Monica Ruiz is the Community Organizer at Casa San José. She has been working with the Latino community for over 15 years. Monica has been a powerful advocate for Latinos on legal, housing, development, and educational issues. She fights for those facing deportation proceedings and launches projects to assist women, youth and high school students. Monica earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh with a concentration in Psychology, and a Master’s degree in Social Work with a focus on Community Organizing and Social Action.
Josie Setzler Witness Against Torture
Josie Setzler is an organizer with Witness Against Torture, a nation-wide community of activists working to close Guantanamo and end torture. She is a nonviolence trainer with Pace e Bene and works in her Ohio community for peace and justice with Pax Christi and several other local groups.

Katie Shaw is a self-advocate for individuals with Down syndrome, a public speaker, and a Board Member of Down Syndrome Indiana. Katie has testified before the Indiana State Senate and is a regular speaker at the Vita Institute at the University of Notre Dame.
Adele Chapline Smith Dinah’s Voice
Adele is the Executive Director and founder of Dinah’s Voice: Sexual Violence Services, a student-focused, survivor-driven organization whose mission is to provide prevention information and consent education to Catholic academic communities, develop resources for survivors as well as improve administrative responses to sexual violence crimes. Her experience as a rape survivor and with other survivors from her college led her to foster an organization and community to help Catholic college campuses be safer places for students and survivors of sexual violence. She is a 2012 graduate of Christendom College and works as a freelance photographer in Rochester, NY.
Ismail Smith-Wade El
Ismail Smith-Wade-El is a researcher, writer, and development professional dedicated to issues of the common good. As a Councilman in the City of Lancaster, it is his privilege to work to create a city that puts people first. Exceptionally passionate for issues around housing, social services, and policing, Ismail recognizes and advocates for human dignity as a priority in all areas of policy and legislation.

Emily Snyder Rehumanize International
Emily was born and raised an enthusiastic Virginian. She is currently a junior at The Catholic University of America, pursuing a bachelors degree in Politics. Emily is a proud former Rehumanize International intern, where she had the opportunity to create CLE outreach materials on various political parties. Since starting college, Emily has worked at a progressive non-profit, on an independent U.S. Senate campaign, and most recently, started interning at a conservative policy think tank on Capitol Hill. Given these diverse experiences, Emily sees no limits to promoting the culture of life in every political ideology. In her free time, Emily is a member of her university’s varsity cross country and track teams, enjoys writing, debating national security ethics, and entertaining her obsession with vanilla iced lattes.
Sara Tang Draw Me In
Sara Tang is a visual artist, illustrator, writer, and creative facilitator whose works often use different poetry forms to express identity experiences. Tang is the founder of the creative collaborations community Sip n’ Sketch Pittsburgh, and a member of the #notwhite collective. She has worked with those who have been affected by cancer and other life experiences in creative therapy excavation workshops. She has studied the arts at the Rhode Island School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and with Immanuel Icons.
Fr. Bernie Tickerhoof Pax Christi Pittsburgh
Fr. Bernie Tickerhoof is a friar of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis. He is currently the Director of Ongoing Formation for his religious community, and is a member of Franciscan Pathways, the community’s retreat ministry. Fr. Bernie offers retreats and spiritual programs in retreat centers, parishes, and religious congregations.
John Whitehead Title or where they’re from
John Whitehead is the president of the Consistent Life Network, an international organization dedicated to promoting a consistent ethic of reverence for life and strengthening the case against each form of socially approved killing by working to end them all. He also serves as deputy editor of and contributor to Life Matters Journal, the magazine of Rehumanize International. John maintains a website on international peace and related issues, Peacemaking for Life (www.peacemakinglife.com). A long-time student of peace, war, and international relations, John received his M.A. from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.
