AVO… 400 North Walnut Street In November 2011, the La Habra Planning Commission approved an 18-unit, detached singlefamily condominium project known as “AVO.” Paying homage to Rudolph Hass, the famed amateur horticulturist who gave birth to the California avocado industry here in La Habra, AVO boasts two- and three-bedroom floorplans for new and growing families, taking advantage of La Habra’s wide range of retail stores and close

BRIO… 300 South Euclid Street Like AVO, the Brio residential project seeks to capitalize on its ideal location for people who work in either Los Angeles or Orange County. TRI Pointe Homes, the developer of the 91-unit detached single-family project, recently received Planning Commission approval to begin construction of model homes at 300 South Euclid Street, and the project is slated for an early 2013 grand opening. Just across the street from the many recreational amenities at Portola Park, Brio is also ideally situated to take advantage of the cultural opportunities available to La Habrans at the Children’s Museum and the La Habra Depot Theater.

Priced in the low $400,000s to start, Brio will feature homes with three to five bedrooms and between 1,700 and 2,200 square feet of living space. Several energy efficient features are built into the homes, allowing buyers the potential opportunity to save on monthly utility bills. Expands Its La Habra Footprint Once the site of Target, the vacant building at 1000 East Imperial Highway will soon be home to La Habra’s second Walmart. Work on the project is complete, and Walmart held its grand opening on the morning of Friday, October 26th, just in time for the start of the busy holiday shopping season.

Joining the La Habra City Council at the grand opening celebration were representatives from Walmart and the La Habra Area Chamber of Commerce.

The original structure was renovated to include improved parking and more efficient vehicular circulation onto the property from Imperial at the signalized intersection. Additional improvements include a stone veneer along the front façade, giving the building a friendlier appearance, especially the main entrance where a new metal canopy/trellis feature and landscaping accents greet patrons. Mayor Tim Shaw (center) welcomes Walmart Market Manager Carlos Gomez (left) and Walmart VP Regional General Manager Jerry Spencer (right).

We thank Walmart for investing in La Habra, and we welcome them to our community.

Celebrating Success & What’s New in La Habra Keep in Touch with Your Virtual City Hall What do you do if you’re busy and always on the go, yet still want to communicate with City Hall? With the explosion of smartphones and the changes that technology has made in the way we communicate with each other, the way in which you can interact with City Hall has changed as well. To help you answer that question, the City has developed a mobile app that allows residents to conveniently share their concerns or request service from the City. The app, known as “Contact La Habra,” interfaces with and complements the Customer Response Management (CRM) system, also known as “Ask Us” currently available on the City’s homepage (http://lahabracity.com/).

La Habra Police Department Launches “LHPD Tips” Have you witnessed a crime and want to report it to law enforcement? Yes, there is an app for that as well! TIP 411, the service that currently allows La Habrans to anonymously report crime to the La Habra Police Department via text message, has created a new iPhone app called “LHPD Tips.” Simply download the app from the iPhone app store and do your part to help keep La Habra safe. Sorry, LHPD Tips is not yet available for the Android market. As a reminder, text messages are never to be used in place of a call for immediate police assistance. In the event of an emergency, always dial 9-1-1.

Los Angeles County Fire Joins Social Media In order to keep residents better informed about its many activities, safety campaigns, and organizational news, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, La Habra’s contracted fire protection agency, has joined the social media ranks. The Fire Department has launched Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube sites to share stories, photos, and videos of emergency operations and safety preparedness programs. A redesigned Fire Department website has also recently “gone live.” Take a moment to visit these new sites at: Facebook: Twitter: YouTube: Web: E-mail:

Youth Education and Employment The City’s Employment and Training Division, in cooperation with John Muir Charter School, has launched a new program to help local youth complete their high school studies at the Youth Center. The program, which began in October, will offer high school dropouts (ages 16-21) an opportunity to earn a high school diploma while also gaining paid work experience. The academic and work aspects of the program are linked, enabling students to develop “real world” knowledge while earning their diploma. For more information, please contact Al Rodriguez, La Habra’s Manager of Employment and Training, at 562-905-7076.

LA HABRA’S DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT OF THE QUARTER:

Foothill Penstemon The Foothill Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus), also known by other common names such as Bunchleaf Penstemon and Foothill Beardtongue, is a compact perennial native to California. The Foothill Penstemon is a known source of nectar for bees and butterflies and can serve as a host plant for the Checkerspot Butterfly; it is common to see butterfly caterpillars on this plant. It has prolific, intense blooms in spring, with colors ranging from blue to magenta, and purple being most common. It grows well on slopes and can provide a burst of color along border edges and in rock gardens. It tolerates alkaline and clay soil as long as there is adequate drainage and it is not overwatered. Established plants may require watering twice a month during the summer.

The Foothill Penstemon prefers full sun at lower elevations and can grow up to two feet tall with a spread of two feet wide at maturity and is hardy enough to tolerate temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

La Habra Water Division Continues Improvements to Water Infrastructure Grand Opening of the La Bonita Park Well and Pump Station The primary role of the La Habra Water Division is to provide safe water quality and ensure a dependable Mayor Tim Shaw cuts the ribbon as council members watch. water supply at a reasonable cost for residents and businesses. In achievement of these goals, the City held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new La Bonita Park Well and Pump Station on September 17, 2012. The pump station and well can provide up to 8,000 gallon per minute of local groundwater and supply as much as 70% of

the City’s annual water demands, meeting anticipated needs over the next several decades. The water supplied through this facility will allow the City to reduce its purchase of more expensive imported water from Metropolitan Water District (MWD), which should yield millions of dollars in savings for the City’s Water Authority. These savings are expected to help stabilize water rates and provide potential funding for additional capital improvement projects.

Construction of New Water Well Begins at Portola Park Construction of a new well at Portola Park to supply additional water for La Habra has also begun. This new well will pump water 1,200 gallons per minute of water and will supply approximately Booster station at 15 percent of the City’s water La Bonita Park Well. demands and like the La Bonita Well, will further reduce the City’s reliance on MWD water. Construction on the new well began in late August and is expected to be complete by January 2013.

Pet Adoption Tips

The holidays are a popular time for welcoming a new furry friend into your family. There may not be a greater gift for homeless animals than to open your heart and home to them! As they do year-round, La Habra’s shelter service provider, Inland Valley Humane Society, always has an abundance of wonderful companions available for adoption. Whether you are considering a new “friend”, for you or someone else, remember that choosing an animal is a big decision. Instead of bringing home an animal right away, consider putting together and wrapping an “adoption kit” filled with toys, a bed, a leash, a collar, food, treats, and a gift certificate to cover the adoption fees.
