New Museum Exhibit Makes Kid’s Health Fun! When it comes to fun-filled family activities, La Habra is home to one of Orange County’s treasures, the Children’s Museum at La Habra. The Children’s Museum features seven galleries and 14 different hands-on exhibits, including a nature walk and small animal exhibit, a model train village, the Dentzel carousel room, a restored 1942 caboose, several science stations, a dress-up and theatre room, the preschool play park, and the family art center. Young visitors can put on a lab coat and become a doctor, dentist or opthalmologist in the Medical Center, and find out what their bones look like and how do to care for them, what’s inside of their eyes, how to keep their teeth healthy, and why x-rays and health exams are important. They also can shop for fresh foods in the market and cook tasty meals in the kitchen, race bouncy horses around the track, climb rocks and play in the Cardio-Park. Healthy You! Healthy Me! runs through August 25th. The Children’s Museum at La Habra is located at 310 S. Water Wisdom: Ways to Save Our Precious Resource

Indoor Water Use:

Water is essential to our public health, safety, and welfare, and it is a subject that is very much on everyone’s mind due to the current drought situation California residents face and the advent of summer’s hot, dry weather. The drought has not yet impacted La Habra directly; however, the City encourages water conservation to protect its resources and to prepare for possible future impacts on the community. There are many ways La Habrans can save water and money with very little effort. While the bathroom is the site of the most water used inside the home, more water is used outside. On average, approximately 60 percent of household water is used in the garden and for other outdoor use. Here are some ways that each and every one of us can make a big difference in helping to be more water efficient:

• Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. Gallons saved per day: 3 • Shorten your showers by one or two minutes. Gallons saved per day: 5 • Fix leaky faucets. Gallons saved per day: 20 • Wash only full loads of laundry. Gallons saved per month: Up to 50 • Replace your conventional showerhead with a low flow showerhead. Gallons saved: 2.5 gallons per minute

Outdoor Water Use: • Watering lawns is prohibited between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. In addition, watering your lawn before 8 am can reduce evaporation and interference from wind, and misting your lawn for a few minutes at the end of the day with a water efficient spray nozzle will build up humidity. Gallons saved per day: 25 • Water runoff is prohibited. Install low flow sprinkler nozzles, and water no more than 15 minutes per day per station. Because our local clay soil can only absorb so much water, you can also eliminate water runoff by running your sprinklers for half the normal time and running a second cycle at least half an hour later. Gallons saved per day: up to 3.6 gallons per nozzle per day • Washing down hard services is prohibited. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks. Gallons saved each time: 150 • Check your sprinkler system for leaks, overspray, and broken sprinkler heads and make sure your irrigation system is efficient, pressure regulated and consistently up to date with the latest water saving technology. Gallons saved per month: 500 • Replace water inefficient plants with drought tolerant and California friendly varieties. Corn Festival Celebrates 66th Birthday with ’66 Mustang By Kelly Singer Morrow, Miss La Habra 2000

What do corn cobs call their father? “Pop” corn. How is an ear of corn like an army? It has lots of kernels. What has ears but cannot hear? A field of corn. Why isn’t anyone laughing at these jokes? Because they’re too corny. Noticing a theme? This year marks the 66th Annual Corn Festival, hosted by the amazing La Habra Host Lions on August 1st through 3rd. If you have never attended, you are definitely missing out on a great event, and all the proceeds raised help support local non-profit organizations. Let me paint a picture of the weekend you could experience… Imagine after a long work week, Friday finally rolls around. You have no desire to cook or entertain the little ones. You pile the family in the car and head to El Centro-Lions Park (320 E. Erna Ave.). Friendly Lions Club members welcome you with a smile, and your little ones, shaking with excitement, see all the carnival rides and game booths. The smell of fresh cooked corn fills the air. As you walk through the picnic area, the amount of food choices overwhelms you, and you realize that you will have to come back Saturday and Sunday to try all the different treats. Tonight it will be a sandwich, corn, and of course the best funnel cake ever. After your meal, you head to the rides. Eleven o’clock comes too soon, but tomorrow you will be back for more. As the sun rises on Saturday morning, the parade is about to start. Miss La Habra and her Court will be there, along with

La Habra’s finest. The streets are packed with the community cheering on their favorites. After the parade ends, it’s time to head to the park. Both Saturday and Sunday offer a variety of contests. Who has the cutest dog or baby? How much corn can you eat or do you make the best pie? Now comes the most important part — buying some raffle tickets for the opportunity to win a car. You’d sure look good driving a fully restored fire-engine red 1966 Ford Mustang down La Habra Boulevard. Maybe Miss La Habra and her Court will bring you some luck when you purchase the raffle tickets from them. The day continues with more exciting rides, lots of food, and continuous live entertainment. Sunday is the final day until next year. Today is shopping day at the Market Place and more games for the kids. Your arms are full with bags of treasures and prizes from the games, maybe even a goldfish! But the best part is about to happen, the La Habra Host Lions announcing the winner of the car. You stand anxiously waiting as Miss La Habra reaches in and pulls the ticket, is it you? The Lions Club President announces, “and the winner is………”

Families from the neighborhood met with City and Kaboom! Staff in March at Freedom House Church for the Design Day, where they shared ideas about the kind of equipment they would like at the park.

The next step will be the Pre-build Day, which will take place on Thursday, June 12th, 10 am, at the build site, where equipment and tools are prepared for the Build Day. On the Build Day, Saturday, June 14th, 8 am-2 pm, the project will be divided into tasks, and groups of volunteers will complete all phases of each task. In addition to building playground equipment, volunteers will plant landscaping, install signs, build furniture, and paint designs on park paths. Besides saving City funds, these projects are a great tool for bringing people together. Also, when a community is engaged in a common goal, results include a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of good will, a sense of ownership and pride for having contributed, and a reduction in criminal activity and vandalism at the site. All are welcome to volunteer at this event. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ariel Sanchez at 714-798-0773 or visit the website at www.thefreedomhouse.org.

Business Ownership, Is It Right For You? Starting your own business can be an exciting and rewarding experience. It can offer numerous advantages, such as being your own boss, setting your own schedule and making a living doing something you enjoy. But becoming a successful entrepreneur requires thorough La Habra busine ss owners Susa planning, creativity and hard nna and Joe Alio from In tegrity Autom otive. work. Consider whether you have the following characteristics and skills commonly associated with successful entrepreneurs: • Comfortable taking risks: Being your own boss also means you’re the one making tough decisions. Entrepreneurship involves uncertainty. Do you avoid uncertainty in life at all costs? If yes, then entrepreneurship may not be the best fit for you. Do you enjoy the thrill of taking calculated risks? Then read on. • Independent: Entrepreneurs have to make a lot of decisions on their own. If you find you can trust your instincts — and you’re not afraid of rejection every now and then — you could be on your way to being an entrepreneur. • Persuasive: You may have the greatest idea in the world, but if you cannot persuade customers, employees and potential lenders or partners, you may find entrepreneurship to be challenging. If you enjoy public speaking, engage new people with ease, and find you make compelling arguments grounded in facts, it’s likely you’re poised to make your idea succeed. • Able to negotiate: As a small business owner, you will need to negotiate everything from leases to contract terms to rates. Polished negotiation skills will help you save money and keep your business running smoothly. • Creative: Are you able to think of new ideas? Can you imagine new ways to solve problems? Entrepreneurs must be able to think creatively. If you have insights on how to take advantage of new opportunities, entrepreneurship may be a good fit. • Supported by others: Before you start a business, it’s important to have a strong support system in place. You’ll be forced to make many important decisions, especially in the first months of opening your business. If you do not have a support network of people to help you, consider finding a business mentor. A business mentor is someone who is experienced, successful and willing to provide advice and guidance. Schedule an appointment with the La Habra Chamber of Commerce for a free half hour consultation to confidentially discuss your business idea. Reach us at 562-697-1704. Instructor Profiles Kathy Breaux

Masterpieces with Pencils & Pastels Fun Acrylic Painting

HNEWH Art History Children’s art class instructor and award winning artist Kathy Breaux knew art would be her profession before entering grade school. She earned a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at Cal-State Long Beach and went on to complete an M.A. in Painting and Drawing at Cal-State Fullerton. Kathy began teaching art in 1981 and currently teaches art to children at nine community centers, as well as conducting private lessons. She says that she especially enjoys teaching children’s art classes, “because I have a really good rapport with kids.” She discovered this when one of her adult students brought a grandchild to class, and she and the boy immediately connected. Her goal in teaching children’s art is to encourage the participants to develop their creativity, as well as teaching them the creative process. In her own artwork, which has been widely exhibited in Los Angeles and Orange County, Kathy uses mixed media watercolors and wants the work to visually move the viewer on an emotional level and convey the spirituality within us all. Kathy’s classes meet on Fridays, 4:00-5:00 pm at the Community Center. For more information about her classes, please see pages 27-28.

Gary Apodaca

Introduction to Digital Photography

HNEWH Photography Boot Camp Photography instructor Gary Apodaca vividly remembers one of his first photo experiences. The Norwalk native was eight years old and visiting Universal Studios with his family, when he got lost. While looking for them, he began taking photos with his Polaroid camera of things that “looked interesting”. Later, his work on the Gahr High School yearbook gave him access to more experienced photographers, and he learned by asking questions and watching them work. By the time he got to college and took his first photography class, he had a basic background and just needed to learn the technical side. A fellow college student referred him to a local newspaper, where he shot high school sports. He also began apprenticing with wedding photographers, and eventually, with a loan from his aunt, purchased his own equipment and went out on his own. For many years he shot weddings, family portraits and senior portraits. Currently, he does more corporate work. Gary loves teaching photography because of the pleasure it brings his students. “I love giving away what I’ve learned, because it helps people get past barriers to creating art. It’s great when I teach them a few simple things, they have a breakthrough, and they are so happy.” Gary’s class meets at the La Habra Community Center on Monday nights, 7:00-8:30 pm. For more information, see page 36.
