Feature Story: New Teaching Exhibit

The Children’s Museum at La Habra recently unveiled its newest permanent exhibit in the Science Station — Clubhouse H20. This innovative hands-on exhibit features a kid-sized kitchen and bathroom area where young visitors and their families can learn how to conserve Earth’s natural resources as Clubhouse a part of their daily routines. H2O Features Play kitchen faucet using light as “water” Talking dishwasher lets you know when to add more dishes Real working toilet Showerhead comparison with real water Information on trash and recycling
Young visitors will have fun loading the dishwasher and listening to the wash cycle, flushing the working toilet and seeing the difference between a low-flow and high-flow shower system. Built by Gizmo Art Production in San Francisco, Clubhouse H20 features a recycling water system
that exemplifies the principles of water, sewer and refuse conservation. Children of all ages will benefit from learning the basic concepts of water conservation and recycling from this excellent educational tool. This exhibit was funded and designed in collaboration with the City of La Habra Utility Authority. A Clubhouse H20 community outreach trunk is being developed for local schools and is sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition to outstanding educational exhibits, the Children’s Museum is available for birthday parties and private events. City News: Latest Achievements

The City of La Habra’s mission is to improve the quality of life in our community. Some recent highlights that contributed to this mission are:
✔ The La Habra Branch Library received funding to stay open on Fridays for two more years; the Old Settlers’ History Museum and Corona Park also received funding for a total of $259,000.
✔ CIF Championship La Habra High School Varsity Football Team recognized with a celebration on the steps of City Hall on January 17th.
✔ Operation Santa provided gifts and food to nearly 800 families with 2,200 children.
✔ Completed the first year of the Pavement Management Program, repairing 50 streets and installing 16,000 feet of new water mains.
✔ Most successful Household Hazardous Waste collection event held in November 2008, with 920 residents disposing of 122 tons of hazardous waste.
✔ Crime rate dropped 10 percent over the same period last year.

Resident in Focus: Esther Cramer
L a Habra’s Loca l Treasu re: E sther Cramer One of La Habra’s most notable citizens is author and historian Esther Cramer. Her family was among the earliest settlers here in the City. Her grandfather moved from the Central Valley to lead a small church in Whittier, and her father relocated from Northern California permanently in 1912, after an earlier visit. Her mother’s family — one brother and seven sisters — came out from Illinois around the same time at the urging of a relative who had settled in La Habra before the turn of the century. They purchased a 20-acre pre-planted citrus grove on what is now Palm Street. Her parents met at the small community church that they both attended and were married in 1914. Esther’s mother and her sister both worked in the packing house, and the story goes that her husband-to-be asked her if she wouldn’t rather be his cook for the rest of his life. She said yes, which, according to Esther was a great thing, because her mother was a wonderful cook. During World War I, Esther’s parents moved to Northern California to work on her grandfather’s farm to earn extra money. When they returned, they purchased five acres of land on North Cypress Street and built a large house. They also bought two more parcels of land to add to their citrus and avocado groves. Esther attended Washington School, which at that time housed kindergarten through eighth grade students. She says that the school had “wonderful, wonderful teachers, especially in English. The children from La Habra always rated highest at Fullerton High School. We started diagramming sentences in
the sixth grade.” It was her third grade teacher, Mrs. Carrie Glazier, who first inspired Esther’s interest in local history. “Mrs. Glazier had dyed red hair and dressed in what now you’d call mod fashion,” Esther said. She told the students about La Habra’s history and how important the City was to Southern California agriculture. “She had her students build dioramas and do a lot of activities that made it fun and interesting.” What was life like growing up in La Habra during her youth? Esther says that it was wonderful. “Because it was during the Depression, we didn’t have toys, so we created our own. We hiked, explored, dug up spiders, dug up what might have been relics. I was a great reader and read everything in the local library. I would take my books up to a hammock I had at one end of the grove and read there. We had so much freedom, unlike kids today. We left in the morning and came home at dinner time. Sometimes, if I was reading a good book and my mother called me for dinner, I didn’t even come.” She and her sister also spent time riding a friend’s horse all over town. After graduating from Fullerton High School, Esther attended Pomona College as a biology major. Because she had always participated in athletics, she was encouraged to minor in physical education. Her first job after graduation was supervising physical education classes for grade school students and middle school girls in Fullerton. While Esther worked, her husband, future football coach Stan, attended University of Southern California’s graduate school. She stopped working after the birth of the first of her three daughters. She and Stan raised their family in the home her family had built in 1916. In November 1959, the house burned down while they were at a football game. The loss of all of her belongings had a big effect on Esther, “My roots were gone, it made me think.” When her youngest daughter was in kindergarten, Esther went back to school to finish her continued >>>>

Resident in Focus: Esther Cramer, continued teaching credential. Her first book, a history of La Habra, began as a term paper. “At that time, no one had heard of oral history,” Esther explained. “I went off to interview local pioneer families, and they were all my neighbors and friends.” The book, La Habra: The Pass through the Hills was published in 1969, and won a national award from the American Association for State and Local History. “In all, 1,500 copies of the book were published, 250 keepsake and 1,250 library copies,” Esther said. Within two years, all copies had sold, and people began to pay very high prices to acquire the books. Meanwhile, in 1971, Esther was approached by the Alpha Beta grocery chain, which originated in La Habra, to write its corporate history. Esther left graduate school to take the job, which eventually led to her becoming Vice President of the company. “At that time there were not many women in those positions; there were no other females involved. I came in as an author, then did public relations, taking people on tours through the warehouse and bakery, and eventually started a Department of Consumer Affairs.” Her work for Alpha Beta led to a plethora of opportunities, including serving as Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Council of the Food Marketing Industry in Washington D.C., serving on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Board, and even judging a Pillsbury bake-off contest in New Orleans. Like the first edition of her history of La Habra, the Alpha Beta book has become very rare because it was only published for employees. Due to the scarcity of the first edition of the La Habra book, requests for more copies, and the more economical printing methods of current times, Esther and fellow Old Settler Kent Roberts decided that the book should be re-released in a more affordable format, with sales profits going to support
the Old Settlers Historical Society. While the original book takes La Habra up to 1925, the new edition, published in 2003, brings the city closer to the present. It also was redesigned as a coffee table style book, with more photographs and other illustrations included. It has sold very well. In fact, another descendant of early settlers and a member of the Society, Mel Williams, kept copies in the trunk of his car and would personally deliver a copy to anyone who ordered one from the display case at City Hall and the Community Center. You can probably guess that a dynamo like Esther isn’t resting on her laurels. She is in the process of writing her autobiography, which will be part of the oral history collection at California State University at Fullerton. She writes a twicemonthly column for the La Habra Journal, and is a charter member of the Orange County Historical Commission. She wrote a history of Brea for its centennial in 1989, and most recently helped to establish the Olinda Oil Museum. When asked about how she ended up wearing so many different professional hats during a time when so many women were stay at home parents, she says that she always admired women who took a leadership role. “There were not many jobs for women prior to the war; they either worked as servants or packing oranges or stayed at home and participated in social activities.” Early La Habra resident Mrs. Albert (Lulu) Launer, who was a teacher, great speaker and writer, was a role model for Esther. “She traveled the world with her husband and did so many things. And she was one of the first school teachers. Also, I was always told that I could do anything I wanted. I left for school at 7:00 a.m. and didn’t get home until dinner time, due to being involved in sports. Then it was homework and time for bed. I never was trained to do housekeeping or cooking. And my mother said that was how it should be.”

Public Works: Recycling Programs
Record Year for Collec tion of House hold Hazardous Waste La Habra’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program completed a noteworthy year with the completion of two HHW events in 2008. Two pilot programs were started this past year, the first being the small quantity generator event for small businesses located in La Habra, and the second being the collection of medical “sharps.” The small quantity generator events attracted 40 businesses and collected 15,000 pounds of HHW. The City’s sharps collection had a successful trial run with over 60 gallons being collected. Attendance for the entire program was 920 residents with 244,000 pounds of HHW. That’s over 122 tons! The proper disposal of HHW at these events helps to keep our environment clean and our community healthy. Residents are invited to check the City’s Web site at www.lahabracity.com for future scheduled events of this type.

Support Green Building Practices: Reuse & Recycle Construction and Demolition Debris The reuse and recycling of construction and demolition debris is considered one of the major components of green building practices. Construction and demolition projects generate large amounts of materials that have value and can be reused and recycled. According to a 2004 California Waste Management Board report, more than 8.7 million tons of construction and demolition debris are put into California landfills every year. This amounts to almost 22 percent of California’s overall waste stream and severely impacts the lifespan of a landfill. Some common construction and demolition materials are lumber, drywall, metals, masonry (brick, concrete, etc.), carpet, plastic, pipe, rocks, dirt, paper, cardboard, or green waste related to land development. Through careful planning, recycling these resources can be more economical than disposal. The disposal costs for taking these materials to the Brea Olinda Landfill tend to be higher than the costs of taking them to a recycling center. There are several recycling centers located in North Orange County. To report an outage, please call Edison at 800-611-1911, or through the Internet at www.sce.com/ContactUs/. There is an option to “Report a Street Light Out,” and it takes just seconds to report the outage. Once the outage is submitted, residents will receive a tracking number so that they can check the status of the repairs anytime. The Southern California Edison Web site also has an Outage Center with information on planned outages, and residents can check the status of an outage by entering the zip code. Shoes on the telephone lines may also be reported to Southern California Edison by telephone or Internet in the same manner. Residents may also report outages to the City of La Habra Public Works Department at 562-905-9792, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please be advised that the Pole Number must accompany the request to the City in order for our staff to report the outage on behalf of a resident. Also, for safety reasons, City crews are not authorized to repair or perform any type of maintenance on electricity lines, including the removal of shoes; this may only be done by Edison crews.

When you shop in La Habra, a portion of the sales tax comes back to the City, providing funding for essential City services such as public safety, park and road maintenance, community development activities, and graffiti abatement. With the passage and implementation of Measure T, the Vital City Services Measure in November 2008, the City will be able to maintain local services that are critical to our quality of life in La Habra. Sales tax is the City’s second largest revenue source. The State of California receives the largest portion of our sales tax — $6.25 per $100. This is a beginning course to introduce and develop drawing skills through demonstrations and examples of master drawings from children’s book illustrations, animation and technical drawing. Course will cover contour, line, structure, perspective, light/shadow, color and modeling form. No class on Monday, May 25th.
Learn the skills necessary to play music and have fun while learning. Class emphasizes chord strumming, reading notes and tablature and playing different styles of music. Students must provide their own instruments (acoustic or electric). We will be making the “Buggy Barn” quilt, which is a unique quilt made from fat quarters. CSS Bingo meets Monday through Friday from 12:45 to 1:50 p.m. The cost of playing is 25 cents per card, with a maximum of six cards. Nine games is the usual number played. If you like bingo, come join the fun! All are welcome to participate. FRIDAY NIGHT BINGO The La Habra Senior Citizens’ Club hosts bingo each Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the La Habra Clubhouse, 200 W. Greenwood. Admission is 50 cents. Donuts and coffee are served. The group also holds potlucks several times a year. All seniors are welcome to participate. “SUNDAYS FUNDAYS” There’s plenty of fun on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., when the Community Center hosts card bingo. Cost is 10 cents per game, except for the last game. CARDS & DOMINOS If you’d like to join a group of card players, there are several to choose from. Canasta players meet 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays, Pinochle players meet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, and bridge players meet on Thursday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. You can play dominos on Fridays at 12:00 noon.
