La Habra School: Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders for Success Summer is fast fading into fall, and school start dates are just around the corner. Students will return earlier this year than they have in the past to one of the three school districts that serve the City of La Habra. Fullerton Joint Union High School District (FJUHSD) students (grades 9-12) return on Monday, August 12th; Lowell Joint School District (LJSD) students (grades K-8) will return on Tuesday, August 13th (7th grade students), and Wednesday, August 14th (all other students); and students (grades K-8) in the La Habra City School District (LHCSD) will begin school on Friday, August 16th (6th and 7th grade students), and Monday, August 19th (all other students). Here is a small sample of what is happening within each district.

La Habra City School District — Education For Today, Tomorrow, and Beyond LHCSD continues to evaluate and refine its teaching methods to help students reach their highest potential. Teachers are better equipped to help students gain a full understanding of the world around them and how to become creative, productive citizens through Project-Based Learning. Implementing cutting-edge instructional practices and technology, the district embraces the Common Core State Standards and the “Four C’s” — Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Communication.

LHCSD Middle School Academies at Imperial and Washington Middle Schools continue to enhance their programs, focusing on fine arts, mathematics, science, and technology. While both schools maintain a rigorous curriculum that incorporates technology as part of the learning experience, Imperial Middle School emphasizes the integration of visual and performing arts, while Washington Middle School stresses STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) education. The approval of “Measure O” by the La Habra community in November 2012 will help provide LHCSD with the resources necessary to support its educational mission, broadening student access to technology, as well as more traditional “bricks and mortar” capital improvement projects, such as building upgrades throughout the district and new roofs at school facilities. While these are exciting and sometimes challenging times, LHCSD embraces the task of helping students succeed in the 21st century.

Lowell Joint School District — Where Amazing Things Happen LJSD serves students not only from La Habra, but also the neighboring communities of La Habra Heights and Whittier. During the 2012-13 school year, the district’s schools maintained high API scores and continued to offer advanced curriculum for students, earning state recognition for excellence in education. Elementary schools emphasize STEM education, and before- and after-school programs stress education in the fine arts — art, drama, and music. At Rancho Starbuck Intermediate School, student academic performance earned that school recognition as a 2013 California Distinguished School. Like the elementary schools continued on page 6 >>>

that feed into it, Rancho Starbuck has consistently highperforming art and technology programs, offering honors classes and “Project Lead The Way” STEM curriculum. Its Math and Science Olympiad teams have received superior ratings in interschool competitions, as have the school’s bands, choir, and drum line. Goals for the coming 2013-14 school year include transitioning to the Common Core State Standards and preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century through a rigorous and relevant curriculum, character education, community service, and respect for our national heritage.

Fullerton Joint Union High School District — La Habra and Sonora High Schools Rank Among the Top 5% Nationally In 2013, leading news outlets such as Newsweek, US News & World Report, and the Washington Post ranked La Habra (LHHS) and Sonora (SOHS) High Schools among the best public high schools in California and the nation. Such high rankings are a tribute to the families, students, teachers, and staff members, as well as the LHCSD and LJSD schools that feed into the FJUSD. Students come to high school better prepared to meet high expectations and compete for careers and college admission. As a result of the highly rigorous academic Heritage Humanities Magnet and International Baccalaureate programs, graduates from the class of 2013 at LHHS and SOHS were accepted to some of the most prestigious universities in America, including Stanford, Harvard, Yale, M.I.T., U.S.C., U.C. Berkeley, U.C. Davis, U.C. Irvine, U.C.L.A., U.C. San Diego, U.C. Santa Barbara, Cal. Poly. San Luis Obispo, and the U.S. Military and Naval Academies. While a good barometer of success, academic achievements do not tell the whole story. Both LHHS and SOHS are California Distinguished Schools and have awardwinning programs in agriculture and Future Farmers of America, athletics, career and technical education, visual and performing arts and nationally ranked Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. All three of the City’s school districts are valuable assets to the La Habra community. By working as partners with parents and the community, and by paying close attention to the needs of their students, the districts help our young people to maximize our talents and abilities and grow into responsible adult citizens.

Child Development Programs Provide the Right Start The City of La Habra’s Child Development Division has provided a comprehensive program designed to foster healthy development and school readiness in young children from low-income families since it received its first funding through the California Department of Education in 1974. Initial childcare services included preschool and before and after school care for 23 La Habra children. In 1988, La Habra became the second city in California to provide Head Start services for its residents, beginning with 84 children at a local school district site, with 17 more added after the first year of service.

for 30 infants/toddlers through a home-based care option, as well as adding service for 20 children in a wrap program at the new Child Development building. What began 37 years ago with service to 23 children on a half-day basis has increased to its current number of over 400 children served, thanks to the Division’s dedication to seeking funding so that the children it serves start elementary school with the same knowledge and skills to succeed as all of the children in our local school districts.

In 1994, the Division was able to purchase modular housing for the programs, which increased the program enrollment to 141 children, which then grew to 201 in 2007-2008. Recently, the City received funding through the American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA), which added services

Celebrating Success & What’s New in La Habra Local Developer Beautifies City and Honors Dedicated Public Servant Development projects may come and go, but Tri-Pointe Homes, the developer of the 91-unit residential home project known as Brio, is determined to leave a positive mark on our community. Located at 300 S. Euclid Street, Brio is already creating a buzz among potential home buyers. Construction is well underway, and Tri-Pointe is in the process of selling the first few phases. Adding flair to the project, Tri-Pointe has dedicated a new community park to the City that complements the elegant Spanish-style architecture of the homes. To help ease the flow of traffic on Euclid Street to and from the development, a new traffic light has also been installed. The street, known as Bridenbecker Avenue, is named in memory of former City Manager Brad Bridenbecker, who passed away in 2007. Brad was a dedicated public servant who is missed by his colleagues in the City and

the community he proudly served. Tri-Pointe Homes’ contribution exemplifies the City’s motto of a “caring community”. For more information about Brio, please stop by the on-site office and take a tour.

Portola Park Build On June 29th, City staff, non-profit staff, volunteers from the community, and employees of Kaboom! and Foresters joined together to build a new playground at Portola Park. The build day began at 7:00 am and ended at 2:00 pm In between those hours, they shoveled sawdust and gravel, put together and installed equipment, mixed and poured cement, dug holes, planted trees, painted sidewalk designs and decorative tiles and more. The project was coordinated by Kaboom!, a non-profit organization committed to building a playground within walking distance of every child in America, and funded by Foresters, a life insurance organization committed to helping families achieve financial security. Besides saving the City funds and providing a beautiful new playground, the project brought people together who might not otherwise have met, as well as creating a sense of accomplishment, ownership and pride. In addition, studies have shown that when a community is involved in building a park, vandalism and other crimes at the site are less likely to take place.

La Habra Receives a “Let’s Play” Maintenance Grant In another positive collaboration with Kaboom!, the City of La Habra has received notice that it was awarded a $750 grant. The funds will go towards the purchase of wood chip surfacing for Oeste Park. Typically wood chip surfacing for one playground costs approximately $1,500, so this grant will reduce City expenses by half. The grant was awarded on the basis of showing the City’s ability to maintain its play area, as well as demonstrating motivation and high potential for success that Kaboom! looks for in its grantees. Kaboom! and the City already have collaborated on building new playgrounds at Corona Park, Guadalupe Park, and most recently, Portola Park.

Students Are First to Overcome Odds and Earn Diplomas

City Holiday Tree Lighting Monday, December 2nd at 6 p.m.

In October 2012, the City’s Employment and Training division, through a partnership with the John Muir Charter Schools, added a high school diploma completion program to its services at the Orange County Youth Center (OCYC). The program was built around incorporating work experience and education. Participants worked from 10-15 hours a week through the Youth Center’s work experience (WEX) program at various sites, such as Party City, Smart & Final, Dollar Tree and the City of La Habra, while attending school for 20 hours a week. By combining the two components, they gained practical work-based knowledge and were able to integrate these real life experiences into the classroom. And just a short nine months later, eight participants are no longer drop out statistics — they are full-fledged high school graduates! It wasn’t an easy road for each of the graduates, who had to overcome barriers to success, but with some help from the staff at the Youth Center, each of them was able to pass the California High School Exit Exam and earn their diploma. And their success doesn’t stop at a high school diploma — each one of the eight graduates is either entering college in the fall or is in full-time employment. The OCYC offers young people the opportunity to develop career interests, receive academic support, and gain valuable work experience in order to achieve their career/educational goals. Services are available to eligible youth, ages 16-21 years, in north Orange County. For more information, please call 562-905-7076.

LA HABRA’S DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT OF THE QUARTER:

Desert Marigold The Desert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata), which means “Mary’s Gold”, is a member of the aster family of flowering plants and is native to the southwest part of the United States and Mexico. It has a mounding habit of bright, solid yellow blooms with fine hair-like gray foliage and can reach 12 to 18 inches in height. A prolific bloomer, the marigold’s one to two inch flowers grace the plant during the spring and fall months from March through November. It is often seen growing for miles along roads in desert southwest areas, because it thrives in full sun and various poor soil conditions, including gravel, sand, loam or clay. Although it prefers full sun and dry conditions, it will tolerate some partial shade. If watered to frequently, the plant is subject to crown rot (rot affecting the part of a plant at or near the ground level). If conditions are favorable, it will self-sow. Due in part to its ability to live in areas where few flowering plants survive, the Desert Marigold is an important food source for various types of butterflies, making it a good candidate for a butterfly garden. For more information or guidance on suitable plants and trees, please contact the Public Works Department at 562-905-9792 or explore the resources below: 1. www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=BAMU 2. usnativeplants.blogspot.com/2011/04/desert-marigold.html 3. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baileya 4. #9031.400 Wednesday, August 28th Fee: $55 DEPARTS: 9:15 AM............. RETURNS: 4:15 PM

Embark on a docent-guided tour of the famed Marion Davies Guest Beach House, developed in the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies! The original Marion Davies home is now the Annenberg Community House, a famed L.A. landmark. Originally featuring 100-plus rooms and an ornate marble swimming pool, the Beach House was a hot spot when Hearst and Davies entertained luminaries from Hollywood such as Charlie Chaplin, Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable and other stars of the day. The original tile and beautiful moldings give a glimpse into the home’s glamorous past that makes you feel as though you were a guest of Marion Davies herself! Prior to the tour, enjoy time on your own for lunch and shopping at the Santa Monica Place or Third Street Promenade. Later, we will stop at the Santa Monica History Museum to see the interactive Then & Now exhibit and explore how Santa Monica’s landscape has evolved. View newspaper headlines from Santa Monica’s past, and enter a replica of the under-construction middle section of one of Douglas’ aircrafts. Trip fee includes transportation, admission, guided tour, water and driver’s tip.
