MISSION Using a model of theory and practice, LTU’s College of Management prepares our students for opportunities in the global economy through interdisciplinary educational programs that emphasize the business, ethical, social, and technological dimensions of leadership and management.
“All the worthwhile and precious things in life are only obtained through continuous and exacting effort, and their worth is in direct proportion to the effort put forth for their attainment.” Russell E. Lawrence , 1889–1934

From the
DEAN In line with Lawrence Technological University’s commitment to theory and practice, the College of Management is committed to preparing ethical business leaders for the challenges and opportunities of the global economy. The foundation of our business education rests on four pillars: student-centered focus, ethical leadership, urban setting, and interdisciplinary programs. Student-Centered Focus: Our commitment to student-centered education encompasses all aspects of the educational experience, particularly quality teaching, student service, and academic support. Ethical Leadership: Motivated by our commitment to the education of the whole person, intellectually, morally, and socially, we provide a rigorous and integrated business education for ethical and socially responsible leadership. Urban Setting: Located in Southfield, the heart of southeastern Michigan with more than 9,000 businesses and over 100 Fortune 500 companies, our students learn in a dynamic urban community and gain valuable experience that only a major metropolitan area offers. The quality and diversity of the student body, together with our location, provides students with an educational experience that prepares them for an increasingly diverse workplace. Interdisciplinary Programs: As stated by Peter Senge, “good results in a complex system require integrating as many perspectives as possible.” Our business programs are organized to cut across subject-matter lines, bringing together various aspects of the curriculum into meaningful association.
Your long years of study have earned you a coveted degree from Lawrence Technological University. We celebrate your accomplishments and wish you all the best as you prepare to start a new chapter of your life. My hearty congratulations on an honor that does not come easily. Welcome to the alumni family of LTU. Keep up the good work; we are all proud of you. Best regards, Bahman Mirshab Dean, College of Management

Dr. Annette Lerine Steenkamp served in the College of Management as director of the Doctor of Management in Information Technology program, 2002–12, and professor of computer and information systems. Dr. Steenkamp’s focus as director of the Doctor of Management in Information Technology program was to establish a sustainable research agenda based on a sound curriculum. This resulted in a body of doctoral research projects with her dissertation research students in the fields of enterprise architecture, knowledge management, and organization process improvement through information technology enablement. She emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of information technology adoption in the enterprise and the need to work synergistically with knowledge workers in other disciplines. Her teaching philosophy is to create a learning environment that facilitates the exploration of ideas and concepts, applies the theories learned in the classroom to problems found in practice, and cultivates the leadership capabilities of every student. Dr. Steenkamp encouraged students to participate in national and international conferences and co-authored with them many peer-reviewed papers in research journals. She has served on the editorial review boards of a number of publications and continues her role as reviewer for national and international journals. She has consulted with industry on a variety of projects, played a leadership role in a number of professional bodies, and supported global initiatives to improve the education of information technology professionals. She holds the PhD in computer science with a specialization in software engineering, a master’s degree in physics, and a bachelor’s degree with majors in physics and mathematics. Dr. Steenkamp and her husband, Elmar du Plessis, have six children.

A Long and Rich
HISTORY Lawrence Technological University It was a firm belief in the future that motivated Russell E. Lawrence to found a university in 1932 – in the midst of the economic chaos of the Great Depression. While less farsighted individuals made predictions of gloom, Russell Lawrence and his brother, E. George Lawrence (who led Lawrence Tech from 1934 to 1964), turned a dream of preparing students for leadership in the new technical era into reality. For 80 years, Lawrence Tech has continued to prosper and accelerate its growth, hone its educational philosophy of theory and practice, build important community and professional alliances, and forge partnerships with the firms, organizations, and industries who hire Lawrence Tech alumni. Wayne H. Buell, who served as president from 1964 to 1977 and as chair of the board and chief executive officer until 1981, worked to build a firm foundation for the University’s early emergence as a technological leader. Lawrence Tech’s first housing center, the Wayne H. Buell Management Building, the Don Ridler Field House, a major addition to engineering facilities, the return of graduate programs, and the massive growth of computer facilities marked the presidency of Richard E. Marburger, who served as president, 1977–93, and as chair of the Board of Trustees and chief executive officer, 1981–93. Charles M. Chambers became president in 1993. During his presidency, he oversaw the construction of the University Technology and Learning Center, University Housing-North, the A. Alfred Taubman Student Services Center, a redeveloped campus quadrangle, and the Center for Innovative Materials Research; revamping of the computer system; creation of Michigan’s first completely wireless campus; and expanded student services. Lewis N. Walker became president in July 2006 and chancellor in July 2012. He had previously served as provost, executive vice president, and interim president. Under Walker, LTU expanded programs in emerging economic sectors such as robotics, defense, and sustainability, including “fast track” certificate programs to help professionals retool for new careers. He also worked to add leadership studies to all undergraduate curricula. He forged partnerships with universities worldwide and oversaw the reinvigoration of student life and the return of varsity sports to campus.

Virinder K. Moudgil, Lawrence Tech’s seventh president, assumed office in July 2012. He has had a long career as a professor and university administrator and was an active researcher in the molecular mechanisms of steroid hormone action and the hormonal regulation of breast cancer. He previously served as senior vice president and provost at Oakland University. Lawrence Tech was founded on the principle that every person should have the opportunity for a college education. From the beginning, there were no restrictions on entering students relating to race, sex, color, creed, or national or ethnic origin – only the requirement that students qualify for admission and have the desire to succeed. Working students could earn a baccalaureate degree by attending evening programs, day programs, or a combination of the two – a feature unique in 1932 and still remarkable today. The school, originally called Lawrence Institute of Technology, became Lawrence Technological University in 1989, a name that more clearly describes LTU’s undergraduate and graduate mission. Lawrence Tech was founded as a college of engineering with only a few hundred students and a handful of faculty. Today it offers more than 100 programs in four colleges, with an enrollment of about 4,500 students, among Michigan’s largest independent colleges. In 1950, associate programs were added to Lawrence Tech’s baccalaureate offerings. In 1952, the College of Management was re-established, having been originally established in 1939 as part of an earlier industrial engineering curriculum. The College of Architecture and Design evolved in 1962 from the former architectural engineering department and in 1993 launched a Master of Architecture program. The College of Arts and Sciences was established in 1967. Master’s degree programs started in engineering in 1990 and in Arts and Sciences in 1997. Doctoral programs were launched in 2002. Concurrently, there has been an enormous expansion and improvement of facilities. The University’s first campus was located in Highland Park, in a building leased from Henry Ford adjacent to the huge manufacturing facility where he built the Model T and perfected the moving assembly line. The University acquired acreage in Southfield and in 1955 opened its first building on what had been a General Mills research farm. The campus has since expanded to more than 100 acres and 12 major buildings, as well as the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Affleck House in Bloomfield Hills, which was donated to the University in 1978. In April 2014, ground was broken for a third student residence due to be completed for the Fall 2015 semester, and in September 2014, construction will begin on the first phase of the Taubman Engineering, Life Sciences, and Architecture Complex connecting the Science and Engineering buildings. In 2011, competitive athletics returned to campus with the University’s entry into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The University offers programs at learning centers in southeastern Michigan as well as international programs in Asia, Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East. The College of Management The College of Management evolved from Lawrence Technological University’s degree programs in industrial engineering, which in the 1930s combined technological, business, law, economics, and management subjects to benefit managers and administrators of utilities and manufacturing facilities, largely the operations of Detroit’s automobile companies and their suppliers.

In the aftermath of the Great Depression in 1939, as financial conditions returned more to normal, Lawrence Tech consolidated much of its business and management coursework, transferring it from the College of Engineering to a newly formed College of Business Administration. It inaugurated a new Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA). Several hundred students were pursuing BSBA degrees when the United States entered World War II. Due to the massive swings in enrollment and programs during the war years, the College of Business Administration was disbanded as a separate administrative unit in 1946. Then, as the enrollment grew, thanks to an influx of returning veterans benefiting from the GI Bill, Lawrence Tech reestablished the College of Business Administration as a separate administrative unit in 1952. Throughout this period, Lawrence Tech’s programs in economics and business administration were led by Edwin O. “Doc” Graeffe. Graeffe’s career with the University ended with his death in 1972, and he was succeeded by Professor Leland A. Lahr, who recognized that more and more students were going into banking, retailing, and other business careers. In response, the name of the college was changed to Business and Industrial Management, and a number of specialization tracks were added in areas such as accounting and finance, marketing and distribution, personnel and labor relations, operations management, and business administration. Work on the 105,400-square-foot Wayne H. Buell Management Building began in 1980 and ended in 1982. The partly earth-sheltered building, named for Lawrence Tech’s third president, was designed for energy conservation. The College of Management took its current name in the early 1980s. In 1988, pioneered by the efforts of Srikant Raghavan and Vernon Hoffner, the College of Management launched the Master of Business Administration program, the first Lawrence Tech graduate degree since the World War II era. Rapidly popular, the MBA was the vanguard of dozens of new graduate programs offered by the University in its quest to meet the evolving needs of students and the professions they enter. The Doctor of Management in Information Technology (DMIT) and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) were launched in 2002 and 2004 respectively. Special thanks to Annette Lerine Steenkamp, Patricia Castelli, and Jacqueline Stavros for their leading roles in launching these programs. Today, the college remains more committed than ever to developing and offering programs that best serve the needs of the career student. Lawrence Tech’s College of Management has come a long way – and gone a long way – since its modest beginnings. Not even the University’s founders could have foreseen a College of Management that would offer programs to students throughout southeast Michigan and around the globe. Currently, the College of Management offers the following degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) Master of Business Administration (MBA) Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
