Leeds International Orchestral Season 2014/15

Page 1

Welcome to Leeds International Concert Season’s 2014/15 Orchestral Season.

We open the 2014/15 season with an all-Russian programme given by the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra featuring Tchaikovsky’s great Fifth Symphony. From abroad we are also delighted to welcome the St Petersburg Philharmonic conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, the Trondheim Soloists, St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jirˇí Be˘lohlávek and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Leeds Town Hall continues to host visits from some of the finest British orchestras and their Music Directors, including The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder with Viktoria Mullova performing Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto, the BBC Philharmonic and Juanjo Mena, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with Vasily Petrenko. We welcome both the first and second prize winners of the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition. First Prize winner Federico Colli performs Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto with the Orchestra of Opera North in April and Louis Schwizgebel, Second Prize winner, presents Ravel’s Concerto in G with the BBC Philharmonic in May. The City’s two great choral societies continue to play an important role in the season. Leeds Festival Chorus performs a programme of French choral music in November including Fauré’s Requiem and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus presents Orff’s Carmina Burana in March. Both choirs join forces for Beethoven’s Choral Symphony with the Warsaw Philharmonic on 9 May and for a performance of Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with the BBC Philharmonic to bring the season to a close on 30 May 2015. Leeds’ International Orchestral Season continues to be one of the finest orchestral programmes in the country. We look forward to welcoming you to Leeds Town hall during the 2014/15 season. 2

All concerts start at 7.30pm (except 29 November which starts at 7pm)

If I could express the same thing with words as with music, I would, of course, use a verbal expression. Music is something autonomous and much richer. Music begins where the possibilities of language end. That is why I write music. Sibelius 5
