Leeds International Orchestral Season 2019/20

Page 1

Leeds Town Hall

Welcome to Leeds International Concert Season’s 2019/20 Orchestral Season

We are delighted to open and close the season with international tours by firm favourites the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Simonov and the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. Making debuts at LICS this season we look forward to visits from the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Swedish Philharmonia with soloist Viktoria Mullova. Eric Lu, winner of the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition, makes a welcome return to the series in February 2020 with the orchestra of Leeds’ Twin City, the Orchestre National de Lille, its first visit since 2000. The UK’s finest orchestras continue to have a major place in the season. Sir Mark Elder conducts The Hallé and James Ehnes in Bruch’s Violin Concerto, whilst Ben Gernon and the BBC Philharmonic give the world premiere of Edward Gregson’s Oboe Concerto, written for the orchestra’s principal oboe Jennifer Galloway.

A Spanish flavour permeates the season as Miloš Karadaglić is soloist in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, in a programme that also presents Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture alongside de Falla’s El amor brujo, and a suite from Bizet’s Carmen. The theme continues in February as Alexandre Bloch conducts Debussy’s Iberia with the Orchestre National de Lille. Leeds’ two great choral societies play an important role in the season. Leeds Philharmonic Chorus is joined by Cambridge University Symphony Chorus to perform Elgar’s The Kingdom and Leeds Festival Chorus presents Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah in March before both choruses join together with a performance of Beethoven’s Mass in C in May. In 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the RLPO presents his Pastoral Symphony and soloist Ning Feng performs the Violin Concerto with the CBSO. Leeds International Orchestral Season continues to be one of the finest orchestral programmes in the country. We look forward to welcoming you to Leeds Town Hall during the 2019/20 season.

All concerts start at 7.30pm

(except 19 October and 21 March which start at 7pm)

It was clear from the start that Prokofiev had a special gift for ballet music which placed him in the big league alongside Tchaikovsky, Ravel and Stravinsky, but it was a gift directed towards satire and social comment rather than romance. FRANK GRANVILLE BARKER
