Poblin and the Lakes Gang will help to bring their own distinct identity to the festival in the same great tradition as European festivals or great comic art producing cultures such as Japan. Who better to create the characters than one of the UK’s leading character designers, Jonathan Edwards? He has a fine track record in comics and a whole multitude of creative strings to his bow. Some of the Lakes Gang have been transformed into 4ft high felt creatures thanks to Louise Evans aka Felt Mistress. If you take a stroll or follow the Windows on Comic Art Trail, you’ll find them knee-deep in comics at Beales’ Department Store, Finkle Street... you can follow their trail in the Family Zone (see page 18) or find out more in our exclusive comic created by Jonathan (see page 44). Jonathan and Louise tell you more about their work in a special event on Saturday 18 October (see page 8) and Felt Mistress will be giving one of her acclaimed workshops at the Brewery Arts Centre on Sunday 19 October.

JOOST SWARTE

She Lives is an audacious comic art experiment that has never been attempted before. Woodrow Phoenix has crafted She Lives, a silent comic story set in California in the late 1940s, to be a surprising and absorbing visual and storytelling experience. Joelle Bernard is a French librarian who fell in love with comics when she was just 5 years old and is recognised as a comics’ aficionado. In 2003 she met Nick Abadzis at the Angouleme Festival in France and has been a fan and a friend ever since. Joelle will share her enthusiasm and knowledge of Nick’s work and introduce his latest book (co-authored with David Camus), The Cigar that Fell in Love With a Pipe, a tragic-comic tale of love, heartbreak and tobacco starring Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth.

Joost Swarte is a maestro, a pioneer and a true promoter of comics. From publishing his comics in the first issue of the seminal Raw magazine (by Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly) in 1979, he’s never stood still moving from drawing comics to illustration and graphic art, designing posters, stamps, logos and typefaces, furniture, objects and even buildings. He is the co-founder of the publishing house Oog&Blik, worked on scenarios for the Herge Museum in Belgium and is a regular contributor to The New Yorker. Is That All There Is? his collective comics, was published in 2012 by Fantagraphics. With the expert guidance of Orbital Comics’ Chris Thompson we are pleased to uncover the genius that is Joost Swarte.

Writing for Comics with Jörg Tittel 10.30-11.30am Venue: BAC AR2

Taking a script and creating a finished piece of sequential narrative is about choices. This workshop will work through breaking down a script and illustrate the influence of an artist’s decisions.

Screenwriter, playwright and director Jörg Tittel teamed up with John Aggs to create the graphic novel Ricky Rouse Has A Gun, a satirical action comedy set in a Chinese knockoff theme park and published by SelfMadeHero. Jörg shares what he learned from making the transition to writing for comics. What can comics do that other media can’t? What are the challenges unique to writing in this form? How can writers train themselves to think visually? How does a writer find and work successfully with an illustrator? Jörg will provide invaluable advice on how to plan and execute a writing project and hone your craft.

Oliver East The Homesick Truant’s Cumbrian Yarn 17 October – 19 October 2014

Venues: The Factory, The Brewery Arts Centre & then On Tour Oliver East, one of a new wave of comic creators who take both art and comics in uncharted directions, is the worthy recipient of the first Lakes International Comic Art Festival artist commission in association with The Brewery Arts Centre and the Factory, Kendal.

Oliver East

During the harsh winter of 2014 Oliver East began his most ambitious project to date. East walked over 140 miles in 10 stages from Arnside train station to Carlisle train station keeping as close as possible to the 30 or so stations that form the Cumbrian Coastal Train Line. Intently observing his surroundings but without taking photos or making detailed sketches, East focused on the humdrum incidentals of the landscape and human activity. Later he drew and made comics, one for each stage of the journey. The end results, in dramatic monochrome, present not documentary images but revelatory soundscapes. View 10 giant murals based on the 10 comic books at The Factory.

Friday 17 - Sunday 19 October, 10am-6pm. Oliver will be drawing live at The Factory alongside his murals on Saturday 18 October 2pm–10pm and Sunday 19 October 10am-6pm. See the exhibition of Oliver’s work in the Studio at the Brewery Arts Centre. Free talk in the Studio followed by a signing session on Saturday 18 October 10.30am. It’s free but donations are welcome. Even if you haven’t come across East’s comics you may have seen the results of his successful collaboration with Elbow: he designed the record covers for The Seldom Seen Kid and Build a Rocket Boys!

The Great War in Comics

28 September - 6 December 2014

Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival bring together for the first time the work of three internationallyacclaimed artists who have shed new light on this conflict through the medium of comic art.

EVENTS

Charley’s War has been described as ‘the greatest comic strip ever created’ and from 1979 until 1987 formed a unique collaboration between pioneering writer Pat Mills and acclaimed war artist Joe Colquhoun.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

The comic strip rarely flinched from providing a frank portrayal of the horrors of war, with Colquhoun willing to subvert traditional techniques of comics’ illustration by opting for heavy inks, messy backgrounds and stark facial expressions to depict an exceptionally dark atmosphere. Set in the Alpine trench war of 1914-1918, White Death is a powerful story of conflict at a simultaneously personal and national level. Charlie Adlard is best-known as the artist on the record-breaking series The Walking Dead. Yet this early collaboration with writer Robbie Morrison is arguably one of his finest works. Using just charcoal and chalk on gray paper, his drawings convey the fear, horror and desolation of war. Ghosts of Passchendaele, launched in 2014, is the third book of a graphic novel trilogy by Ivan Petrus. Painted in bold, dark, muddy colours, his art powerfully invokes the iconic post-war Passchendaele landscape. Curated by Beth Hughes (Abbot Hall Gallery) & Sharon Tait (LICAF) with thanks to Jane Colquhoun, Moose Harris and John Freeman. Additional thanks to The Flemish Literature Fund and to Titan Books and Delcourt.

The Nuisance of Landscape: Grizedale - The Sequel Join us at Abbot Hall, the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry and Blackwell for an irresistible journey through the twists and turns of Grizedale Arts’ last 15 years, taking in artists Andy Goldsworthy, Marcus Coates, Olaf Breuning, Turner Prize winners Jeremy Deller and Laure Prouvost, and many, many more along the way. This expansive show presents a challenging view of the rural landscape and the conventional ‘romantic’ perceptions of it, featuring reconstructions, artist films, complex installations, original artworks, performance and a wealth of other material that will provoke, confuse, enlighten and entertain.

30

Farmer above the Sea of the City © Grizedale Arts

Across the courtyard, at the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry, Laure Prouvost’s recent Turner Prize winning film installation, Wantee, celebrates her fictional grandfather’s association with artist Kurt Schwitters. A short drive away, at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, Grizedale Arts have created After Ford 151 – Blackwell’s Dark Place, a collision of objects and ideas that presents a politicised history of design, and explores the notion of Arts and Crafts as a resistance movement.

Doug Braithwaite began his professional comics career at the age of 17 working for Marvel UK and 200AD breaking into the American market just two years later. This specially-commissioned exhibition will not only celebrate Doug’s unique contribution to the superhero genre (where he has drawn just about every character both for Marvel and DC comics in titles including: Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, Batman LODK, Green Arrow, Universe-X, Justice, Secret Invasion Thor, Wolverine Origins, and Journey Into Mystery to name but a few) but will also reveal why the other universes he has helped create (Storm Dogs with David Hine (published by Image) and Unity for Valiant Comics) have won him award nominations and great acclaim from critics, peers and fans alike. The Universe Within will explore Doug’s working process, as well as showing the finished artwork, and will underline why he is considered to be a truly “fine” artist both within and beyond the comic art world.

Windows on Comic Art Trail 3 October-24 October 2014 What is it? In 2013, the Lakes International Comic Art Festival ‘Windows on Art Trail’ made an incredible impact, involving both business and locals in the inaugural event with fun displays of comics and comic-related ephemera. This year artists, schools, community groups and local businesses will again collaborate to create this unique art trail displayed in the windows, a brilliant way to explore the town. You will find out more about the businesses, the groups and comic art by following the trail. A very big thank-you to all involved.

Suitable for anyone with a keen curiosity and sense of humour, this unique emporium offers a miscellaneous and multifarious bazaar of the bizarre and a marvellous mart of the most memorable kind: Viz Unmasked: How a Viz Comic is Made For the last 35 years, Viz has been produced quietly, and on a more or less monthly basis from the comic’s headquarters in the North East of England. In all that time, like Colonel Sanders’ blend of herbs and spices, its method of production has been a closely guarded secret. But all that is about to change. All will be revealed in this fully interactive, stateof-the-art, hands-on animatronic exhibition. How is Britain’s third or fourth funniest comic produced, from conception to final product? Anyone wishing to visit is advised to arrive early as queueing times, to see what is already being billed as ‘The Exhibition of the Century’, are expected to exceed 5 hours..... or possibly 6. Get Surreal with Herr Seele (or Dadada is all he wants to say to you!) All the way from Belgium, making his UK debut, comes Herr Seele co-creator of Belgian iconic half-wit Cowboy Henk for which he and writer Kamagurka won one of the major prizes at the Angouleme Festival in France in 2014. Herr Seele presents the history of their nation, 35 paintings in a style developed by René Magritte, their great predecessor and compatriot. Called La Peinture Vache (painting with the tail of a cow as a brush) it’s painting done quickly, with what baroque artists used to call ‘el furio del pinello’ (the fury of the brush)... it’s fast, it’s furious and it’s absurd ...... She Lives - an audacious comic art experiment that has never been attempted before. Woodrow Phoenix has crafted She Lives, a silent comic story set in California in the late 1940s. In order to make a book as giant as possible he had to bind it himself using the largest paper size available. He took the unprecedented step of actually drawing the story into the bound book itself, so on display is original art work, with all the corrections and marks visible.

Junko Mizuno – Meet Junko Royalty Horror, sex, chainsaws - what’s not to like? Known for her style of powerful imagery, Junko combines cuteness, gore and eroticism in comics, paintings, animations and toys. Junko will be interviewed at the festival as well drawing live here and there’s an exhibition of her wonderfully addictive posters at the Brewery Arts Centre too. On display here is one of her giant Kidrobot Toys, Junko Royalty, but be warned - this is not a toy! Hunt Emerson’s Fez Tai Chi classes: Saturday 9.45am and Sunday 10.15am. A world exclusive! Bring your own Fez if you have one, or try one of our natty selection and spend 15 or 20 minutes loosening up and relaxing while following Mr Emerson’s motivating moves. A Day in the Life of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival Brought to you by Joff Winterhart Joff is an illustrator, film-maker and creator of Days of the Bagnold Summer which was shortlisted for the 2012 Costa Award for Best Novel. He has an extraordinary talent for observing the day-to-day lives of people and places and sharing them in words and pictures with great insight and humour. On Saturday 18 October Joff will be be documenting a “Day In The Life of LICAF” in words and (mostly) pictures picking up its sights, sounds and atmosphere. What do comic professionals eat? Why and how do people queue? What is the posture of the average comic fan? Like a not particularly accurate courtroom artist, or perhaps a quite slow polaroid camera, he will nevertheless present his findings and research in some form and, only a day later in some sort of analogue power point presentation (see page 15)…Ably assisted by ace comics creator Hannah Berry. Thanks to Jonathan Cape and Costa Coffee, Kendal for making this possible and to Hannah Berry and Jamie Barnes for their on the day support. Hungry? Thirsty? As well as satisfying your hunger for comic art we know that a critical part of a good festival is being able to keep your energy levels up by finding the right kind of food, in the right kind of places and, wherever possible, avoiding long queues. We have done our best to recognise this by working in partnership with some of Kendal’s favourite cafés, bars and restaurants. That isn’t to say there isn’t a fine food and drinks offer right across the Town and you’ll find plenty of places to accommodate different tastes and budgets. We highlight here those based at some of our key venues and/or those who have made an extra special effort to celebrate comic art in its various guises helping to make Kendal a comic art town for the weekend.
