The Sugar Sea A touching story that tells the drama of thousands of people who leave their home, facing inhuman journeys, in the search for a better future For Ervin the sea is a friend he uses to play with. But when Ervin looks at the sea he also dreams of leaving Albania to go to Italy, the country where everyone sings and is happy, as he sees on television. So, when the Vlora, “the sugar ship”, is hijacked by over twenty thousand Albanians and sets sail for Puglia, on the 7th August 1991, Ervin leaves, wearing only his swimsuit. For Luca the sea reminds him of missed games of football on the beach and the loneliness of holidays at Torre Canne drawing imaginary friends, waiting for his beloved uncle Antuono. But when Luca looks at the sea he also feels the danger in it… One look was enough to see in each other’s eyes the same desire for freedom that lead two boys on an adventure that lasts just one night, an adventure of hand signals, dust, and stolen doughnuts. As words are not needed to make friends.

“Their eyes […] experience the same mysterious spark of complicity. They are two twelve-year-olds on the run. Ervin is naked, Luca is clothed. Both are terrified. They wanted freedom and they took it: and now what are they going to do with it?”

THE SUGAR SEA • 192 pages hardcover w/jacket cover: OTTAVIA BRUNO

" As suggested by Ottavia Bruno's wonderful cover illustration the two main character are divided by a stretch of blue sea and they mirror each other. [...] The journey on the boat Vlora through the eyes of a child is the most evocative part of the book." Andersen M ario Desiati was born in Puglia, Italy, in 1977. After graduating with a Law degree, he began working for magazines, national daily newspapers, and leading publishers. He writes numerous essays, poems, and novels. The Sugar Sea is his first book for younger readers. His works are published in Germany and the Netherlands.

A sparkling saga from the most beloved Italian fantasy author Sofia knows that nobody adopts a thirteen-year-old. Life in the orphanage is dreary and monotonous, until one day an anthropology professor adopts her and takes her away. He reveals to her that the mole on her forehead is a sign that in her dwells the spirit of the dragon Thuban. Three thousand years ago this powerful creature defeated Nidhoggr, the treacherous wyvern who sought to destroy the Tree of the World and alter the balance of Nature forever. Thuban imprisoned him in the bowls of the Earth, but the seal holding him in has grown weak with time. Feeding on men’s rage and stupidity, and making use of ferocious emissaries, Nidhoggr is on the verge of returning. It’s up to Sofia and the other chosen ones to stop him in the final battle. Sofia, the girl with the dragon spirit, must believe in her gift. omNIBUs eDITIoN • fIrsT TrIloGy • 832 pages

Aria

A series for sturdy and romantic girls, with their feet on pedals and their heart in the clouds There is a place where unreceived letters, lost presents, and unsaid words end up. There are eyes that can read the wind and hearts that can fly. “What rubbish!” Greta would immediately declare. Thirteen years old with a racing bike on hand to speed off on as soon as anyone starts talking about love. Like her classmate Lucia, who seems to think of nothing else, or Emma, who knows everything about. Greta does not believe in love... that is until she meets Anselmo. Seventeen years old, as beautiful as an angel, as mysterious as the packages he delivers around Rome on his bike. To discover his secret, the three girls land at a do-it-yourself bike repair centre where miraculous things happen. Here they discover that Anselmo can read the future. Written in the wind with weaves of light. But when his eyes meet Greta’s, everything disappears. In the darkness of the greatest mystery that is love.

A saga about nature, magic and power

Luce has discovered that she belongs to the ancient lineage of the Lyliums, who lived in communion with nature, and that she has to save the geomantic grid that protects the equilibrium of the Earth. Meanwhile, though, Kendra, the handsome boy she encountered in the Grotto of Whispers, has been kidnapped by the evil Incarnators. Who has betrayed him handing him over to the enemy? In order to find out, Luce must penetrate the secret hideout where Kendra is locked up and she must do it quickly: another geomantic knot is about to vanish, and it’s the one situated on the Giant’s Path along the Northern Irish coast. An old legend tells the tale of a fierce Irish giant who built a footpath in the sea to reach his Scottish enemy. Will Luce accomplish her mission?

Sid, Luce and Hoon are first-year high school students. Sid is a fencing ace, Luce knows the secrets to winning a boy’s heart, and Hoon is simply a genius. The sudden appearance of a ruthless enemy, bizarre powers rekindled, rivers of tears turning to crystals and a messenger from a distant world cannot be merely coincidental. Sid, Luce and Hoon learn that in ancient times they were the goddesses Artemis, Aphrodite and Athena, who fled from Mount Olympus to escape the wrath of Ares, the god of war. Ares is still after them in order to gain possession of the twelve stones whose divine powers will allow him to unite Olympus and Earth under his savage command.

The Forest School 4 A Very Special Fairground • 48 pages paperback illustrations: SIMONE FRASCA

My chocolate friend • 48 pages paperback illustrations: Francesca Assirelli

What a strange school: it’s got a rabbit’s ears, spots like a giraffe and a bird’s beak! A highly enjoyable book about the first experiences away from family and getting along with classmates. At Forest School there’s a real buzz: today everyone is off to a fairground! The bus fails to set off because it’s broken down. The little cubs burst out crying desperately, but the teacher has an idea: why not make the fairground at school? Guaranteed fun for all!

Michael is a good friend, as good as chocolate! Filippo is happy because he’s got a new neighbour called Michael who comes from Africa. Filippo is convinced that he’s made of chocolate, because the caretaker calls him “my lovely little chocolate” and the local baker always tells him that his cheeks are highly edible. Filippo is crazy about chocolate, but how can he take a nibble of his friend without causing him any pain?

An amusing story that demonstrates how authority can be used positively and the importance of not making superficial judgements about others.

A first step to enjoing the adventure of reading.

Mrs Amaranta, the teacher, appears to have walked straight off the set of a horror film. She looks as though she wants to eat you with those canines sticking out of the corners of her mouth. “Blimey, our teacher’s a vampire!”. To expose her true identity Greta needs proof: for example, how will she respond to garlic or when faced with a glass of tomato juice?

Boys Against Girls • 128 pages paperback illustrations: SUALZO

A book to discover the properties of fruit and vegetables, learn about traditional granny remedies and have a giggle at the same time.

A smart story to introduct the topics of prejudice and gender difference.

It’s been snowing for three days and there is no sign of it stopping. Actually didn’t wise Mr Peppino warn you, or perhaps it was the onions? According to an old belief, onions can predict the weather. Lamberto believes that he also needs a vegetable capable of giving him wise advice in order to sort out the mess that he’s caused with his best friends. Who knows if a friendship fruit exists? Maybe Mr Peppino can lend him a hand!

Zoe’s mother drives a truck, her grandfather threads pearls, and she is a fan of Star Wars! Since Zoe started at his school, Giovanni’s world has been turned upside down. He no longer understands which things are for girls and which are for boys. And yet, the rules are straightforward: a boy should never do girls’ things, talk to girls or share things with them, and the same goes for girls! rights sold to TURKEY (YAPI KREDI)

The friendship between a half-Italian half-Moroccan little boy and the President of the Republic, a perfect introduction to the topics of immigration, citizen rights and respecting the law. Innocenzo is 11. When freedom calls, he can’t resist the temptation to hide in the local park and enjoy the sun in peace. One day he spots an elderly smartly dressed man throwing breadcrumbs to the birds. It’s him, the country’s President of the Republic! It’s such a shame that when Innocenzo tells his schoolmates about his encounter everyone thinks that, as per normal, he’s telling imaginative fibs.

The right to healthy and safe food explained to children. What do you need to make a pizza? Flour, yeast, tomatoes, mozzarella, oil, water. But that’s not where the story ends: to make flour you need wheat, a mill, a miller. For the wheat you need seeds, soil, rain, sun and farmers. All children, or nearly all, have had a go at making pizza dough, but how many have had the chance to think about all the necessary “hidden” ingredients?
