Inventory and packing for the move to the new CMS!
We started off the year by color-coding all fiction books by genre. The fiction collection is now arranged by these eight genre categories: Realistic, Sports, Action/Adventure, Mystery/ Suspense, Inspirational, Relationships/Romance, Historical, and Science Fiction/Fantasy. Students love the new arrangement and are able to browse the shelves easily to find great books!
After the success with the new arrangement of the fiction section, we transitioned the nonfiction section from the Dewey Decimal System to a more user friendly system adapted from the Book Industry Standards (BISAC) Model. Nonfiction is now organized in categories that "make more sense" to students.
This year, the students at CMS enjoyed opportunities for gaming in the library. The PTO helped the library to purchase an xBox Kinect to be used in conjunction with the PBIS system. As a reward, students were able to reserve the xBox for their lunch shift. Students also love to hang out with friends in the library before school and during lunch while playing checkers, board games, and working on puzzles.
It is so important that students learn the importance of making smart choices in their digital lives. This year, we began using lessons from the Common Sense Media Curriculum to discuss relevant issues with students. Lesson topics included: Safe Online Talk, Strong Passwords, Personal & Private Information, Digital Life 101, Oversharing on the Internet, Sticky Sites, Copyright & Citing Sources.
