President Wolk

A Message from the President of Castleton State College

Welcome to the 2009-10 Season November 2009 Welcome to another stellar season of Spartan hockey and the inaugural season at our newly refurbished Spartan Arena. We are very proud of this wonderful college and community facility, available not only to our women’s and men’s hockey programs but also to Castleton students and staff and folks throughout the greater Rutland region. I remain especially proud of our students, coaches, athletic administrators, staff members and our volunteer Blue Line Club, all of whom are doing it right. Together, this is one incredible team. Our student athletes have contributed in many impressive ways to the Rutland area, including year-round work as mentors in the schools and as volunteers in the Learn-to-Skate programs, storm cleanup, senior citizen assistance and a myriad of other outstanding community service projects. You have before you a uniquely outstanding group of young men who are highlighted and showcased on these pages, on the ice and in our community. Head Coach Alex Todd has done a spectacular job growing this program, attracting and educating well-rounded gentlemen who know that at Castleton, a non-scholarship Division III college, student comes before athlete. One shining example is what you have in your hands: a program that comes to life through the graphic design and creativity of our players. Our athletes have a much higher overall grade point average, retention rate and graduation rate than the general student population. They volunteer countless hours in the community. Yes, unlike most professional athletes, they are role models. We have invested in them because they deserve it, and because they hold the key to our future. Please join me in enjoying another fantastic season of Spartan hockey. Respectfully yours, David S. Wolk President

2009 - 2010 Castleton Spartans Men’s Hockey

2009-10 Season Preview A look into the 09/10 Castleton Men’s Hockey season son.” The answer to taking that next step lies in a combination of things, according to Todd. “We will be a very good team as long as everyone plays the way that we are capable, and we get production out of our new players. Last season we had four players that combined for 62 fewer points than they did the season prior. If we get those players on track early this year along with 11 new players who represent the most talented freshmen class in my time at Castleton, their development and transition to the college game will determine our success heading into the Such is life in the ECAC East, but Head playoffs.” Coach Alex Todd knows his team has a solid track record in the conference, es- Keys to the returners, and expected to pecially down the stretch. The Spartans play key roles are, Stuart Stefan, Nick Westare a combined 16-2-2 in regular seasons cott and Kirk Bolduc. Stefan is looking games over the past three seasons in the for a return to form, after posting eight month of February, typically playing their best hockey when it matters most. In the ever-turbulent, always unpredictable ECAC East, one thing is a constant; you never know what will happen next. In 2009, the top-three seeds were all upset in the ECAC East Tournament, and the seventh and eighth seeds squared off in the championship round. Castleton knows all-to-well the unpredictability of the league, as the Spartans won eight of their last nine games during the regular season, surging to second in the standings and earning a home quarterfinal game only to lose to eventual champion and seventh seeded Babson.

Coach Todd believes this year’s version has what it takes to parlay that late season success into postseason success, and advance deeper into the ECAC East Tournament and beyond. “We want to maintain our position as a top-three team in the league, and start a new tradition of winning in the postseason.” Said Todd. “Ultimately, the goal is to win the conference championship and continue to advance. For all of our regular season success over the past three seasons, it is time to start performing in the postsea-

honors in each of his final three seasons of play. Lavender, who recently signed a professional contract with the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League (CHL), captained the 08-09 squad, and ended his career with eight goals and 27 assists in 97 games. Lavender joins former Spartan Travis Martell in the professional hockey ranks. Martell, a 2008 graduate of Castleton, was a key contributor to the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern professional Hockey League (SPHL). Martell appeared in 58 games for the Ice Bears last season, scored one goal and passed out 19 assists to help Knoxville earn its secondstraight SPHL title. If Castleton is going to take the next step in the 2009-10 season, look for the returners to play to their potential, the new players to gel quickly, and perhaps a few surprises in the from of some ungoals and seven assists in 08-09. The junior forward earned team rookie of the year honors in 2007-08, ranking fourth in ECAC East rookie scoring with 11 goals and 15 assists. Westcott has been tabbed the team’s captain this season, his fourth as a Spartan defenseman. Westcott has appeared in 64 games through three seasons, and will be looked upon to lead the Spartan defense. Bolduc, another unrelenting hitter, has been selected as the assistant captain. Entering his senior season, Bolduc has played in 77 games, scored 16 goals and dished out 33 assists. Castleton will need to fill voids left by the graduation of 11 seniors from last year’s team, which represented Coach Todd’s first recruiting class. Chief among those that will be missed are Brandon Heck and Jared Lavender. Heck is Castleton’s all-time leader in games played (104) goals (48), assists (73) and points (121). Heck earned ECAC East All-Conference

Head Coach

ALEX TODD

49-45-11, 5th Season ~ Rice Lake, WI ~ Union College , ‘01

Coach Alex Todd began his hockey career in Rice Lake, WI where he learned the game and played until his junior year of high school then he left to play his senior season in Dubuque Iowa, in the USHL. After the USHL coach Todd played four years at Union College in the Division I ECAC Hockey League. Upon graduation coach Todd signed a professional contract with the Fresno Falcons in the West Coast Hockey League, (WCHL, now the ECHL). Todd played for the Falcons from 2001-2003. In his rookie campaign Todd picked up where he left off at Union with a stand-out rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors for the Falcons, as well as being voted onto the league’s All-Rookie Team. The ideal end of his rookie season came when he helped Fresno earn the league’s playoff title and were named Taylor Cup Champions. After two more years as a professional one in the WCHL and one year in the CHL, Coach Todd made the decision to hang up his skates, and work on the other side of the bench. Todd’s coaching career began at Utica College in Utica, New York (ECAC West NCAA D-III). After a successful first year in college hockey as a coach, he began working with USA hockey and its summer development programs. To date, Todd has assisted with USA hockey player development camps in the Central States District, and was the camp director for the 2006 Mid America Bantam Camp. Todd has also been involved with the USA Hockey national festivals coaching at each level, the 14’s, 15’s, 16’s and 17’s for the past six years. In the summer of 2005 Todd was named head coach at Castleton, inheriting a team that

13

had gone 0-44 in its two seasons of existence. In Todd’s second season the team continued their improvement with a final record of 17-6-4, getting the school’s first ever national ranking as high as #8 in the country. The 2007-08 team started slow but finished on a program record 10-game unbeaten streak and earned its first ever home playoff game. The 2008-09 season marked the final season of Todd’s first full recruiting class. The Spartans made a successful trip to Germany and Austria for preseason, earning a 3-1 mark overseas. The Spartans finished the year with a 15-9-2 record hosting an ECAC East Quarterfinal game for the second year in a row. Coach Todd’s first four years have been marked by many firsts for Castleton and the Men’s hockey program including a home record of 26-12-3 over the last three years and an overall record of 54-26-8 in the same time. However, the stats that Coach Todd is most proud of are his team’s accomplishments off the ice which include leading the ECAC East in all Academic team selections for the last 3 year (9, 13, and 14 respectively), a team average GPA of 3.35, and having his players raise and donate over $14,000, and countless volunteer hours to local charities in the Castleton and Rutland communities. Heading into the 2009 - 2010 season Coach Todd is looking to improve again, with a large and talented freshmen class ready to take Castleton to the next level and a core of returners, the Spartans will be very competitive in the ECAC East and looking to establish themselves further in league playoffs and maintain their presence on the national stage. Coach Todd lives in Rutland with his wife Ali and their two dogs Bauer and Delaney.

Season ReVIEW

he Castleton Spartans kicked the 2008/09 season in European style. The Spartans traveled to Germany and Austria where they competed in four exhibition games during the October semester break. The Spartans traveled through the Alps, visited Neuschwanstein Castle, and skated their way to a 3-1 tour. However, the early start didn’t prove to be an advantage for Castleton as they stumbled out of the gates to a 1-4 record to start the regular season. But with a quick pre-christmas hot streak, the Spartans found themselves at 4-4 heading into 2009.

C

astleton hovered around the .500 mark during the month of January. It wasn’t until a sound defeat to the Babson Beavers on home ice, sparked a 7-game winning streak. The streak propelled the Spartans into a 2nd place finish in the ECAC East conference standings with a record of 11-5-2, and an overall record of 15-8-2. The Spartans

were one of the hottest teams in the country heading into the playoffs.

With many high expectations of success, the Spartans matched up against the high-flying offense of the Babson Beavers in the first round. Unfortunately it was the Spartan fans who left the Rutland Regional Fieldhouse unhappy as the Beavers took the ECAC East quarter final contest, 4-1, and ended the Spartans season. The Spartans graduated 11 Seniors in 2008/09. This was the base core of the team that made the Castleton Spartans hockey program into what it is today.

Sports Medicine

Whether you’re a top athlete or an active participant, sports-related injuries are an unwelcome fact of life. Returning to peak performance as quickly and safely as possible becomes a critical goal. Sports injury management, rehab and training are a focus at Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic. At both our main campus and our adjunct facility, the Killington Medical Clinic, we design and deliver programs that make use of the most advanced sports medicine techniques in practice today—programs that train the entire body, rather than just treat the injury. Our sports medicine team has an exceptional mix of education and experience in this area of treatment. Through our leading-edge iSPORT program and our association with Rutland Regional Medical Center, the VOC has brought injured, world-class athletes, Olympians and active sports enthusiasts back to top performance. The Spartans Hockey Team Chips in to Help the United Way Wood Warms Program

Wood Warms is a program designed to help low income Vermonters receive a cord of dry wood from wood donated by the state of Vermont. United Way of Rutland County managed the program to process, stack, and distribute the wood. United Way’s partner agency BROC in Rutland County and CVOEO in Addison County took responsibility of distributing and collecting vouchers of those receiving wood. In Rutland County, 63 cords of ready to burn wood will be distributed to needy Vermonters in the month of October. Through the support of volunteers stacking and loading the wood into recipient vehicles, it makes the job a lot easier for those getting wood. United Way would like to thank members of the Castleton State Hockey Team for their support of Wood Warms.
