Independent magazine for Local Residents

Dear Reader, I would like to give you a very warm welcome to Leyton Life magazine, to both existing readers and new. As we draw closer towards the end of 2013, and into the magical festive season of Christmas; this issue has been packed with great articles events, stories, recipes and much more to reflect this time of year. C n C page is full of things for the younger ones to make and do, the girls have been working very hard to find great things for their audience. If you have any comments do write or email them over details on the left of this page. The main area of local concentration for this edition is on p9 Eat or Heat, a rather somber subject, but with positive and practical solutions. Therefore please take time to read the article and view their website. If you are fortunate enough not to have to use their services for food, please notify those you may know that are struggling to eat and would benefit. If however you are in a position to make a donation of food then please do. Buy a unique gift from the Craft Fair, win some tickets for Picturehouse Stratford, or a £20 Gift voucher for your favourite supermarket. Please remember to mark all entries correctly as quite a few of you lost out on a prize because you didn’t complete the entry in full. Should you have anything to contribute, or comment on please write in, it is always great to read your observations. Apologies in advance for any errors! Have a great time celebrating your special occasions.

A year after £9bn was spent on the 2012 Olympics; we are still seeing an increase of homelessness, whilst empty buildings from the events are being kept empty under lock and key, till developers can move in.

Eat or Heat - www.eatorheat.org We are an organisation that endeavours to help feed people in these times of austerity. As the economic situation has deteriorated, we have seen more families that say “I can either heat and light the house but can’t feed the family too”.

that is the question?

More disturbing than that is soup kitchens being under the threat of closure. On a more local level Christian kitchen, which has been providing hot meals for 20 years to local residents in need, were being evicted by the council from their Mission Grove site. Reasons given were anti-social behaviour and crime, but these were unfounded according to a Freedom of Information request to the council. For now the Christian kitchen stays put at the Mission Grove site, but the threat is not quite over yet. With energy prices set to increase along with travelling and general food and drink, people are having to cut back more and more in various ways. Having spoken to people ‘you get to the point where you can no longer do any more insulating, double glazing, boiler upgrades, buy cheaper brands because the charges just keep getting higher and higher. In the end it seems like as if you have made the changes for nothing.’ If our politicians do not step in, and re-evaluate their ‘austerity measures’ pull the Bankers in line so that lending to public is not at a ridiculously high interest rate, but within the reasonable rates of the Bank of England then our society will be moving back into Victorian times; where those with money flourished and those without died due to poor health. LIFE IN THIS COUNTRY SHOULDN’T BE “EAT OR HEAT”

SO HOW CAN YOU HELP? We need cans, packets, cartons, crates of food. Not fresh food as we don’t have anywhere to store it. But long life food will be great. Please will you spare something so we can see our fellow citizens live a decent life? We know times are hard, but dig deep please and spare just something to help someone have a decent meal. Food Bank Friday The last Friday of every month, Eat or Heat is asking locals to donate a tin of food to provide emergency support to members of their community. It’s easy to donate. You can deliver to many local pubs, cafes and shops and if you can’t get there on Friday, feel free to pop in with a tin, or a bag of dried goods such as rice or pasta, over the weekend. Jimmy goes to his Father’s house Jimmy was a boy who went to church like some people do, and one day he had a daydream. He could see a beautiful house and the door was open. The inside of the house was amazing, it was colourful and full of light, and some great music was coming out. Then he heard a voice calling him, “Jimmy, I’m your heavenly Dad. There’s a room for you here in my house, if you’d like to come and live with me.” Jimmy thought he would like that, so he walked towards the house, and he noticed a funny thing which was that there was a curtain of water falling across the door, like a waterfall. Anyone walking through the door would get wet. As he got closer he could see that everything inside the house was really clean, sparkling clean, it even looked like it was shining. Everything outside the house looked a bit dusty and he noticed that his clothes and skin were really dirty. Then up popped a market stall next to the path, and a woman behind the stall said, “You’ll need this to get into the Father’s house”, and she held out a badge which said ‘I pray every day’. “You can’t get in there if you’re dirty, look at you” she said. “You need to pray every day and then you’ll be clean enough to get in.” “Oh, no, that’s not true”, said a man, and when Jimmy looked, another market stall had appeared on the other side of the path. “That won’t get you clean”, said the man, “You need to be kind to everyone all the time as well.” And he tried to sell him a different badge. Then up popped another lady, “Why get yourself wet?” she asked. “You don’t need to do that, there’s another door you know, if you come with me and do everything that your mum and dad and teachers tell you, you can get into the house

that way.” Jimmy didn’t know what to do. He remembered hearing that Jesus was the way into the Father’s house, but since he was so dirty, maybe he should clean up first? Just then a little child came running up the path. He was about 3 years old and he was really grubby, but he just kept running past all the market stalls and he ran straight through the waterfall into the house. Wow! ‘What am I waiting for?’ thought Jimmy. ‘He was just as dirty as me and it didn’t stop him from getting through.’ So he ran away from the people trying to sell him things and he ran through the water, and do you know what happened? He knew deep in his heart that all the dirt was washed right off him. When he opened his eyes he was in a beautiful hallway with a bird perched on the banister of the stairs. “Hello”, said the bird, “I’m the Holy Spirit, can I show you around?” “Yes please”, said Jimmy, “but first, tell me about the door and the water.” “Ah, well that’s Jesus”, said the Holy Spirit. “He is the gate, the only way into the house. Those market traders outside have got it all wrong. All you need to do is step through the door. And this is the only door. I know the door the lady was talking about when she said there’s another way in, but that door actually leads into a tunnel which is a maze. Different people have built the walls of it and added to it over many, many years. It’s terrible, sometimes people walk around in there for years, thinking they’re on their way to the Father’s house, but if they find their way out it’s only back through the same door, so they’re still on the outside.” “Anyway, back to the real door! When Jesus died he was what we call a sacrifice, and that means that when anyone accepts his friendship and love they become clean and new.” Jimmy looked down but he got a shock because his hands and clothes and shoes were just as dirty

as before! “I don’t look clean” he said in a quavering voice. “Oh, don’t worry about that”, said the Holy Spirit. “The bits you can see are the least important things. When you become friends with Jesus you get a new heart. Deep, deep down inside you are not just clean, but shining. And as you live here and get to know your heavenly Dad and your big brother Jesus, that new, shining life will grow inside you like a seed, and it will get bigger and bigger until it reaches your skin and the dirt you can see will start to fall off. One day you yourself will shine too!” “Really?” asked Jimmy. He couldn’t imagine that he would be as amazing as everything around him. It was all glowing; the walls, the floor, the stairs, even the coat hooks. “Trust me,” said the Holy Spirit. “Everyone who lives in the Father’s house becomes like the Father. You think these coat hooks are shining, just wait ‘til you see him!” “Let’s go”, said Jimmy, and off they went, down the hall. Article by Helen Stedeford

Diet’s Don’t Work (see advert on page 11) The diet industry is a multi-billion pound industry. These days you can take your pick of a range of diets which promise slim waistlines and lower dress sizes but do they actually work? Have you ever lost weight going on a diet only to put it all back on again and more? This is what we call yo-yo dieting. It’s a vicious circle which is hard to break but it’s time to break that cycle. Please understand that DIETS DON’T WORK!!! Here’s why: 1. They are temporary. You cannot maintain the proposed eating plan because often they suggest you eat below your minimum calorie intake and they restrict certain nutrients the body requires. 2. Binge eating is normal once you come off a diet. This is the body’s way of replenishing what has been restricted during the diet and to defend itself against further bouts of restriction in the future. The binge eating leads to weight gain. 3. Diets don’t work for all. Everyone is physiologically different so what may work for one person may not work for another. 4. Initial weight loss is not fat. When you start to deprive the body of the nutrients it requires you will lose water and lean muscle mass. This looks good on the scales but it is not actually fat you are losing. Lean muscle is harder to replace than fat is. 5. The body goes into starvation mode. The body will always try to defend itself so when you restrict calories it stores food as fat as it doesn’t know when it will eat again. When you do go back to normal eating again, the body will been so used to eating a restricted amount of calories that the excess of calories just gets stored as fat. Hence why you put on more weight after a diet than before. The Diet Check

12

Before embarking on any diet please test it against this checklist first and if you can answer “no” to any question than reject the diet and eat a healthy balanced diet instead. 1. Do they take into consideration individual lifestyles? 2. Do they set long term plans for both diet and activity? 3. Do they include exercise? 4. Do they provide enough energy to meet minimum calorie requirements? 5. Do they include ALL of the food groups? What is the answer? • Eat a balanced diet of roughly 2000 calories for women and 2500 calories for men • Remove processed foods from your diet and eat more plant based whole foods. • Restrict your calorie intake by only 20% which will keep the body from going into starvation mode. • Exercise regularly and be more active. The course is: • Educational and Empowering • Realistic • Guaranteeing Long Term Results if you follow the programme. • Run by a qualified Obesity Specialist and Personal Trainer. You get: • 1-2-1 Assessments (No embarrassing public weigh ins) • Nutritional Advice • Fat Loss Exercise Sessions • The tools you need to be healthy, lose weight and keep it off. No gimmicks!
